I’ve loved watching you and Winston grow. I have a red tri named Ahsoka we adopted at 6 months from a farm. We got her in prime fear age lol. it was a lot of work to get her not afraid of our stairs or other people around, even small noises I could tell she would pick up on and get overwhelmed by. But we’ve had her almost a year and she’s improved so much and I’m so proud to have her. Aussies are such amazing loyal dogs and I can’t imagine life without her now. Love this channel and always love seeing new videos so I can learn more on how to be a better Aussie parent ❤
Couldn't agree more regarding crate training. It is super important. Blue is a red merle Aussie that loves his crate. We used a thin cotton fabric that covers half of his crate which makes it feel more like a cave/den. Whenever I need to mop the floor or when we just came back from a hike and I need some time to shower and get everything tidy again I say "go to your place" and he goes in, receives a little snack and chills out in there. We've even noticed in the last couple of weeks he'd go in there without us telling him. Whenever he wants to sleep or when there's too much going on (visitors or fireworks) he'll go in there and really enjoy the safety it provides. We also offer him his meals in there and his waterbowl is attached to the inside of the crate. It's just wonderful and I'm so glad we didn't listen to all the critics.
@@fzg590 our first one died of Evans syndrome, a rare blood disorder at 11 years old. We have been so conflated with bad information on how to train a dog, but went back through some of your videos, and it really has just cleared up so much and helped make much more sense

Thank you for the video. We just got an Aussie puppy so I’ve been watching everything on how to keep her happy and healthy. We are currently in the 2-4 month phase so she is a sweet angel 😇 I loved hearing about your experiences with the different phases, they were very insightful and documented some great observations that I will now be on the lookout for throughout the upcoming phases!
I just was gifted a beautiful purebred female Aussie. I named her Chara which means Joy in Greek language. She's 11 weeks old and just a treasure. Your videos are going to be a great instrument to utilize as I walk this path with my new forever friend. Thank you again Winston and family! Blessings to all of you
Great tips, thank you! For the amount of work that must've gone into making this video, you sure deserve more subscribers. The audio is good, and it's all really well scripted and edited.
I just adopted a blue Merle Aussie and I also named him Winston ! He’s almost 9 months and let me tell you I’ve never had a dog like him. I’ve had Border Collies, Black Labs and German Shepherds and while those breeds do have very different personalities, I feel like Australian Shepherds are on a different level!
Your Aussie is so pretty! I have an Aussiedor (Aussie mother and choc lab father) and he has his mother’s ENERGY, he’s 7 months and rarely sleeps. Like on a scale of 1-10, he’s a 15 🤣 I’ve also noticed he took on the Aussie vocal yodeling (good alarm clock at least) He also has a great natural herding instinct, we never really had to teach him to stay near us in the woods or outdoors because he just herds us! I know he can be a lot and frustrates the family, but I love this little flufferboy, I never feel alone now because he demands he goes everywhere with me
We just rescued an 11 week aussie puppy from an awful upbringing. She's a little older and we have to start from zero on training. She's not food motivated which makes it that much harder, and has such a different personality compared to my 6 year old border collie. Hooray to the puppy stage.
I enjoyed this! So i liked and subscribed from two of my accounts haha. We just got Rocky. Its SO complicated because we also have 8, 6, 3.5 and 1.75 year old kids. The older two are totally down with training as a team with us, but the little two make it tough - though they add some desensitization built in I guess. At first, this was REALLY hard for me. I didnt want a dog, but i want a happy wife and kids. He is stealing my heart big time. I hope to do well with him. 9-10 weeks old and zero interest in other dogs (other than his brother who lives with my inlaws) and he seems to never want to wander away from us. He's always by our feet. Just as when we brought home out oldest kid, we just so badly wanted to be good parents - i was inclined to believe that wanting to be and caring enough to to want to be was the majority of the battle, but im not sure its that simple with dogs. Either way I really starting to love this little guy. Hope to raise him well. Thanks for your advice. PS: Looks like your in canada or maybe minisota? i'm in rochester and you have more snow than I do!

I'm getting an 11 week old Aussie in two days and now I'm worried lol. I've got a 2 year old chihuahua cocker spaniel mix and I'm in an apartment (moving to a house with yard in 3 weeks)so I want to make sure everything goes well and smoothly. I'm not the most fit person but I've been working on being more active and I know this dog will make me accountable to being active daily and making sure she's got plenty of exercise. I just hope 11 weeks isn't too old to start training her and I really hope she isn't biting at my other dog trying to herd her.
My dog is 9 months old, and we got him at 7 months. His name is Grizzly, and he’s a mini Aussie. He refuses to take me seriously. He’s loves and trust me for sure! Follows me around and cuddles up with me without instruction. But when it comes to discipline. It’s very funny though that you call it teenage phase.because I always say the same thing! My dog is very reactive to other people and dogs, but negatively. (It’s like a different side of him.) Any tips?
this was a amazing video I just recently got a Australian shepherd he was hit by a car a month ago and he has a broken pelvis so I rescued him been taking care of him since. He's 3 years old and I want to train him and make sure he gets the training he needs since they are intelligent dogs but my question is do I wait until he is completely healed or can I start doing some basic training with him? and is 3 years old too late to train him? thanks!
Hi... I enjoy all your videos with your Aussies. I would like to ask you how you manage the time with work and the training. If you have to go to work for a few hours, what do you do with Winston? Do you take him with you or he stays at home alone while you are working? How long? How he stay occupied while you are not at home? Thanks!
Hi thank you! I work from home so I don't have to worry about that and is a reason why I have an Aussie. I don't recommend people getting an Aussie if they have to go into work. Especially as a puppy because it is unfair to the dog and the owner. They require too much attention. However, if it really is for only 2 or 3 hrs a day and the dog is 6 months, putting them in a crate will be the best option. As for training, like I said I work from home, so I have the time and is again a reason why I am able to have an Aussie. Hope this answers your question! 😊
I disagree. Our Aussie is hoke for 6-8 hours when we're at work and he's never destroyed or had an accident. We invested a lot of time in crate training from when he was 8 weeks old and utilized different toys inside of his crate to keep him comfortable. When we get home he goes outside for a long walk and outdoor play, then inside for mental training games. Aussies are insanely smart and love to please their owners, so working on developing which behaviors you want, plus building their confidence to be home alone is key. Our dog is almost 3 years old now and for the past year he's been left out of his crate 100% of the time. I don't think it's realistic to say that no one who goes into work should have an Aussie. Learn each other and it'll be fine
thank you so mutch for this video. My Ozzy is 9 month now....and we´re in this outburts, barking.....propably fustrated as you said that he cant meet every singel dog.But i feel that its mostly other male´s not feelmale.....why?
I absolutely LOVED this video.. I have a now 4 month old Mini Aussie; we've had her since she was 3 months old.... She has been the biggest challenge, I've ever had... I am fortunate enough to be home and work with her, but it has been difficult when there are times I am wrapped up in work; Potty training has been our worst enemy, I take her outside every 1 hr to 1.5 hours and she pee's multiple times, even poops. However, immediately after or maybe 20-30 minutes in, she's peed/pooped on the floor. I immediately take her out again.. Is there anything you suggest that I can do to help with this, or this just a patience thing?? The previous owners used puppy pads and I am wondering if that is part of her problem.
Hey! I would put her in the crate as soon as you get back in the house. This way you are eliminating the possibility to pee on the floor. I'm not sure if you are crate training but you definitely should. So if you don't have an eye on her or engaging with her, put her in the crate. They don't like to pee/poo where they sleep so it will help teach her bladder control.
@@winstontheaussieshep - I wanted to come back and say THANK YOU for your advice! Potty training has been a HUGE success with your advice! About a 1.5 months after I had messaged you, our sweet girl finally understand the idea of going outside only. When she needs to go, she is AMAZING about alerting us- typically paws at our hands or heads straight for the door. Crate training has been a huge success as well! Next stop, figuring out a way to stop the "reactivity" to everything and certain people or animals.... Any advice on that? haha
I just got an Aussie, she is 9 weeks old. I'm a first time dog owner. We've started training. She plays very rough and bites us a lot. I'm training her to not bite our hands and try to get her to play nice. Do you have any recommendations for harnesses & collars for Aussies? Because mine hates them and I've gotten so many different ones.
not a Aussie owner (yet), but most pups hate harness and collars, my lab HATED them, I recommend just leaving it on with no lead for 10-20 minutes, do this for a couple weeks.
Hello, Winston, I love dogs specially Aussies. I’m thinking of getting one but I live in a very hot climate. Is that ok with them? I’ve never had a dog before
They are double coated dogs, but they were developed in the Westcoast of the US so they can handle hot weather. Their double coat protects them from the sun and the cold so never shave them down.
I am tickled pink I found yall today. Judee is 13 weeks old smart as a whip. I'll utilize thing U teach me. Crate training isn't going well. I think I need extra help.
Crate training can be a pain. I can definitely give you some pointers but it would be better to actually talk it through. I started doing live streams so if you decide to tune in, I can tell you my process there 🙂 I make a community post prior to going live to give everyone a heads up.
Hi All, I am planning to have a Australia Shepherd.I love them so much. I'm living in the UK. Anyone can suggest me a best place to get one. Thanks ❤❤❤
I couldn’t agree more on the “don’t use pee pads” I used those with my dachshund and now anytime I have a rug in the house he thinks he can pee on it 😑
And do they like have any health issues? Because I know that king spaniels have ear infections because of there long ears, and pugs have a hard time breathing because of there squished face.
I was victimized by my friend who got an Aussie. You won’t get addicted to humans ……but you will change your life to have one of these dogs. The first hit is free.
It’s funny how a reason trains 1 or two dogs, and they are making videos as the dog whisperer…Hahaha, I have owned several Aussies, both male and female( Cuz yes, there’s only 2 freaking genders!!!) and I have made plenty of mistakes. But one thing is the same, they are dogs, not robots and they all have personalities each there own. My current is a 8 yr old female who is also my Sevice animal as I am a disabled Veteran with one leg. You want a challenge, lose a leg, then retrain your Aussie to be a service animal. She’s the best dog ever…most of the time. 😂
Lol I mean if there hasn't been any accidents you should be fine. Based off of my experience at 8 weeks old Winston was a peeing machine. They say your puppy can hold their bladder an additional hour for every month so 3 months = 3 hrs. But I still recommend taking them pee before putting them in the crate and after taking them out.
Are you a dog trainer lol? This is great advice. Hit the nail on the head for everything, though I personally think teaching your dog to play is not focused on enough. It's crucial to brain development and there's so many benefits... Then you even mentioned you got a trainer for your reactivity!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Perfect 🤌
Thank you!! And thank you for the feedback. I'm actually not a trainer, but funny enough I signed up for an internship with my trainer to actually become one (I haven't officially shared this news yet) 😝

Any advice on that? haha
How’d you get past the nipping at the feet? When I try to show him what he’s doing is wrong he just gets even more hyper.
I'm a first time aussie owner too. How's it going for you today
Is your dog a standard or mini Australian Shepherd? Lovely video, thank you!
Thank you! He's a standard
He looks so similar to my puppy who is almost 9 months ❤
Hello, Winston, I love dogs specially Aussies. I’m thinking of getting one but I live in a very hot climate. Is that ok with them? I’ve never had a dog before
They are double coated dogs, but they were developed in the Westcoast of the US so they can handle hot weather. Their double coat protects them from the sun and the cold so never shave them down.
I live in Arizona and my mini Aussie does fine. Just monitor the dog's time outside so that they don't suffer heat exhaustion.
Should I get one or a border collie help me😢
Only you can answer that haha 😝
Do you mind sharing where you got him he's so beautiful
I have one his name is dart!
I have a 6 month old Mini Aussie , He is beautiful, His name is " Snickers , Brown , Tan , White ❤
Are they easy to train?
Generally yes but they will definitely try to outsmart you
Hi All, I am planning to have a Australia Shepherd.I love them so much. I'm living in the UK. Anyone can suggest me a best place to get one. Thanks ❤❤❤
How do I teach my puppy to have a off switch I will be getting a 5 month old Aussie black tri puppy
It's a lot to get into over a message but if you haven't already start with crate training and teaching a place command
You have to take them outside every hour to pee? What if people work or are in school??
How did you get your dog to not attack your cat?
I made a video on that 😊 ua-cam.com/video/ccFEl5WWZ5c/v-deo.html
It looks like you guys have a cat too? How did you introduce your Aussie to him or her?
We have 3 😅 here you go hope this helps ! ua-cam.com/video/ccFEl5WWZ5c/v-deo.html
I have some questions I wanted to ask you. Is there anyway I can contact you?
A family friend has to give away her aussie. She's arouund 14 months and I've never had a dog before!!
I couldn’t agree more on the “don’t use pee pads” I used those with my dachshund and now anytime I have a rug in the house he thinks he can pee on it 😑
❤
And do they like have any health issues? Because I know that king spaniels have ear infections because of there long ears, and pugs have a hard time breathing because of there squished face.
They are generally healthy dog
Hip dysplasia can be common in older Aussies
Omg I feed judee by hand too..
I was victimized by my friend who got an Aussie. You won’t get addicted to humans ……but you will change your life to have one of these dogs. The first hit is free.
I can't find a treat he likes as a puppy, he will turn 3 months 3/24
Your dog is so.big
Why are you wearing gloves?
Umm every time I take my dog for a walk he drinks water agian… sould I take him out agian Lol
No he’s probably reactive because of genetics tbh
No. It's not the same as being a parent.
Anthropomorphizing your animals is weird, inappropriate, and not the best way to care for them. We need to de-normalize this.
Why the glove? Micheal Jackson the dog trainer.
I don't want to touch the raw food with my hand lol
I’m in love 🐕
Are you a dog trainer lol?
This is great advice. Hit the nail on the head for everything, though I personally think teaching your dog to play is not focused on enough. It's crucial to brain development and there's so many benefits...
Then you even mentioned you got a trainer for your reactivity!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Perfect 🤌
Thank you!! And thank you for the feedback. I'm actually not a trainer, but funny enough I signed up for an internship with my trainer to actually become one (I haven't officially shared this news yet) 😝
@@winstontheaussieshep oh man that's great news!!!! Welcome to the club 😁
