Imo cars are not underpowered, you just have to drive them differently. know when to drop a gear, carry speed through the corner and so on. also these cars are typically smaller and weigh less, which kind of equals out the low power. the low weight also makes it easy going around bends faster than even some sporty big cars.
I'm kinda with @AlanisKing on the "low power cars are fun" thing. My first car was an X1/9, probably 75HP when it was new. The thing is, you don't have to go anywhere special to wring a car like that out - you can drive it flat out without breaking the law.
I'd rather have something like a Miata or an X1/9 that I can use all of its power on a winding back road and still be under the speed limit and the car's limits. I don't understand the point of monster horsepower for the road. Where can you use all that power safely and legally? Give it a little too much gas in the wrong place and it'll be sliding off the road into something that's going to be very expensive to hit. Slow car fast and all that.
We are trying to defend her and give a chance but I think its a bit much to bring up TWO sub 20k cars she rented at an airport like at least bring in something classy like a Chevy Tahoe Performance Edition, that thing looks like ass and smokes ass on the dragstrip.
I've actually driven a Venue. It's quite a good little car, all things considered. It's small, fairly nimble, comfortable even for a fairly large person, and it has a great warranty. It's MILES ahead of the Aveo you compared it to... it fills the same role, but far better. It's not fast, but it's better that a crappy little econobox SHOULD be. If that makes sense.
I respect Alanis for the manual Corolla. It's a lot of fun to drive a cheap manual car you don't give a shit about, rather than needing to be constantly hyper-aware of the possibility of scratching/denting your ultra-rare expensive sports car.
A couple of Alanis picks sound like pining for the days of yore when cars were just simpler/cheaper. I think a lot of people nowadays look back on their bread and butter cars they had in the 80s and 90s, the Cavaliers, the Celicas, the Blazers(s10 model) very fondly. Many had no power, slushy shifters,, what not, but they were fun, and today with all the sound deading and everything has over 300hp but weighs over 2 tons, and all the tech and traction control and what not they're not as 'fun' as that old beater you drove in your 20s, so for that, good picks. :)
As a Corolla owner, I can confirm we have no emotional attachments to a Corolla. I've had 5 years of completely reliable driving and I've been bored every second behind the wheel.

In many jurisdictions the Polaris Slingshot is considered a motorcycle or autocycles, so I find it funny you keep bringing up as a "car" on your car centric channel.
"It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" Eco boxes with a manual are fun, not good cars, just fun cars. This is why the Hyundai Veloster N shocked everyone when it came out, it was way better than anyone thought it would be. It was a cheap car given just enough upgraded parts to make it FUN.
I test drove a venue and genuinely loved it. you're like a richard scarry busytown character puttering around in it. Also, it has to be the cheapest car with lanekeeping assist out there right now.
I Wonder if its the same scenario as with dacia sandero. Drove one couple of years ago, like an old shitbox in a good way. Manual, 1 litre engine goes to 5k rpm in a blink, cars noses shoots up and you go
One of my favorite cars I've ever drove was an 05 buick century. It's not necessarily fast, but it has loads of torque considering the engine, doesn't handle too bad, and is really comfortable and easy to work on and maintain. Plus, it's slow and quiet enough to be able to truly push to its limits and no one will bat an eye. But don't let that fool you, it can break its tires loose on a dry, hot, summer day
The big problem with the SLK55 is the price. They haven't come down to where I think they should be, which is low to mid 20's. They're still fetching $35-45k. And if you haven't found one where the hydraulics for the top haven't been replaced, well, just run away. That's a $5000-6000 repair.
There's also a CLK 55 coupe and a C 55 too... bit rare however. Those are powered by the same engine and the weight is negligible. Plus those don't have the convertible roof to deal with.
@@rgates159 There are only 2 available within 200 miles of my, according to autotrader. A 2009 and 2010, both with 60k'ish miles on them, both have an asking price of $39k and $40k. Maybe the market is different where you live, but I don't live where you live.
Forget about the SLK55 coming down. IF anything they're appreciating because Mercedes cant build them anymore. Where you think they should be is unjustified by the spec.
@riccochet5329 you have to search nationwide if you want a 09 or 10. They only made about 200 total between those years so its rare for more than a couple to be on sale in the entire country. For comparison, they made over 2000 of the 05s.
Hard watch. The Corolla? You could see Doug rethinking his decision to bring her on. Also her agreeing with cars that she seconds earlier said she haven't spent time around "yea...because its just fun to drive!" Are you just agreeing with dough because its doug? boo
I'm sorry Doug but YOU ARE WRONG about the Venue. I recently rented one and IT IS FUN! Not every car is fun in the same way, but this tiny cross over sure is fun to get about your daily commute and even weekend driving! It is fun just to think about how something so tiny (near kei car spec) and so cheap (under $20k) can be so practical and drive so well! It even has wireless Android Auto/Apple Carl Play!
I have had the pleasure of driving a Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo on the German Autobahn and it is truly fantastic in that context. It has massive power and the acceleration from, for example, 170 to 240 Km/h (105 to 150 mph) is lightning fast and like a super sports car. The comfort is very good, but the driving dynamics are absolutely fantastic. You quickly forget that you are sitting in an electric car. It's so good and you really just sit and smile the whole way through.
Alanis likely drove either the regular Corolla SE or the SE Apex Edition as a press vehicle last year; the Apex is more bare bones in features but has the stiff suspension, so she is correct on that rental aspect but the regular SE is a little better equipped in which it has a moonroof. Either way, Toyota decided to kill the manual transmissions for 2023 on the regular Corollas (obviously not GR)
I hope Doug makes a video exposing that *ALL* electric cars are garbage. They will continue to be garbage until there is a swappable battery standard. Electric cars should be like ICE cars. You pull up to a battery station, swap in the amount of batteries you need for the range you need and drive off in under 5 minutes. If you're only going 50 miles, swap in 50 miles worth of battery and save weight. Have no range anxiety because you can go anywhere and swap in a battery. Save the road, tires, and brakes because you don't overload your car with battery range you won't use.
Nah, I’m actually with Alanis on this one. I own a 2020 Corolla as my daily driver…..and I’m guessing I’m doing even worse than Alanis because mine is an automatic and slow…..BUT, once it’s moving, it actually handles REALLY good, at least for what it is, it doesn’t have any business being as good as it is, and yet it is. As a cheap daily, which doesn’t cause ANY headaches at all….when it comes to fun, you could do waaaay worse than the Corolla. I LOOOOVE MY COROLLA
Best car we ever owned (and still wish we had)?? 1997 Toyota Tercel! 5 speed manual, crank windows and not much else. But you could beat it to within an inch of its life and it just kept going. It was legit fun, primarily because you just knew it wouldn’t (and didn’t) break.
I really value that Doug doesn't get stuck in the automotive echo chamber of most UA-cam channels. Too many car people just shout the same opinions over and over again and it makes being a car person incredibly boring. Thanks Doug!

A lifted Smart Car convertible. I've got a bunch of cars to drive, but this one is my daily driver. So fun and weird as heck. Plus it was an easy and entertaining project.
I actually 100% agree about the Corolla! I had one as a rental (automatic) once when the Merc was in the shop, and it was the most fun I've ever had on the road! It's small and light and handles great; you can really zip around traffic and fly into parking spots!
Alanis shows epic-level knowledge with her Corolla choice. I got a rental of that and it was *so* much better than it had any reason to be. On her advice alone I'd check out that transh Hyundai
I could vouch for manual Corolla it is fun. The clutch engagement is the same way as Doug’s Carrera GT. You have to let off the clutch almost completely before you give it throttle. It doesn’t like to be driven the traditional way it super car like.
I definitely agree with Alanis, slow kind of bad cars with manual transmissions are so much fun. I have a 2003 Toyota Echo with a manual as an extra cheap beater car and despite that car being slow and objectively pretty bad, I have so much fun driving it around
The base model Mini hatch with the 3 cylinder engine. I was surprised on how refined it was for a 3cyl and it handled like a go kart. For driving around town I’d rather have that than a JCW.
Manual Corolla for the win. I want a woman like Alanis. I had a 91 Corolla base model with manual and loved it. I also had an 02 Hyundai Accent manual and did a 360 on a dirt road with it because I decided I wanted to be a rally driver that day. I paid 700 bucks for both of those cars. The thing about electric cars everyone seems to forget is the government law that requires all of these electrics to be able to be shut down on a federal level, remotely! Electric isn't a bad concept it's just terrible in how it's being carried out. No thanks.

Smart ForTwo. Especially the 2016-2020-ish "453" model. 5 speed manual, 3-cylinder turbo..... about the same horsepower as the Hyundai Venue. Love mine.
the R63 AMG Minivan is more fun than you might think too. It's a 500-horsepower that AMG made into a Minivan designed to shuttle kids to school it's insane. It's also one of the rarest Mercedes models to come out in recent years
I 100% agree with the Manual Corolla, even 2014-2018 models. Everything thinks Corolla, eww boring. However, with a manual it's extremely fun. You don't have to worry about anything. I have a 2017 with 274k miles. I had to change the brakes pads twice, the water pump, and the alternator, which took 2 hours for the water pump and about an hour for the alternator and brakes. That is literally it. I still have to look at my tach to see if the car is on because it idles so smooth.

Oh absolutely! That's why they remain cool to drive!
Yeah but then she would have to be in France and nobody wants that. Not even the French.
@@fritzkuhne2055My old '98 Fiesta had 73 bhp but weighed under a tonne. Was great fun to chuck about and you learnt not to use the brakes.
@@looper451what are on about? France is a great country.. you clearly never left the US in your life..
Slow car fast and all that.
one of the most fun cars I've ever owned was a 95 Nissan 200SX SE-R with a manual... It could barely climb up a hill but god was it an experience
We are trying to defend her and give a chance but I think its a bit much to bring up TWO sub 20k cars she rented at an airport like at least bring in something classy like a Chevy Tahoe Performance Edition, that thing looks like ass and smokes ass on the dragstrip.
slowcarfast ftw!
Driving a slow car fast is sooooooooooooo much fun.
Yeah, I’ve got a manual one with the 1.0 turbo that makes around 120hp. It’s a really practical car and the build quality for the price is great.
I got one as a rental once and hated it lol.
The back and forth Sunday videos have become my favorite thing lately, well done Doug and crew!
I respect Alanis for the manual Corolla. It's a lot of fun to drive a cheap manual car you don't give a shit about, rather than needing to be constantly hyper-aware of the possibility of scratching/denting your ultra-rare expensive sports car.
We all know a rental (spec) car is the funniest thing in the world
A couple of Alanis picks sound like pining for the days of yore when cars were just simpler/cheaper. :)
If you get your first car by God make it fun so you keep your love for cars forever!
I love these videos with Alanis. She's so fun and you two have great chemistry on camera. Please more of these videos
Mr Kilian Nintendo?
As a Corolla owner, I can confirm we have no emotional attachments to a Corolla.
I've had 5 years of completely reliable driving and I've been bored every second behind the wheel.
Doug is the kind of guy that wears Denim shorts while driving a Hyundai Venue Denim.
do they make denim cargo pants?
Congratulations @somebody9785 for using a dead meme to make a stupid comment, all for the applause of a few of your fellow morons. Not original. Not humorous. Make millions happy, keep your inane comments to yourself and save your minuscule intellect for your career as a septic tank cleaner.
In many jurisdictions the Polaris Slingshot is considered a motorcycle or autocycles, so I find it funny you keep bringing up as a "car" on your car centric channel.
I'm not a Porsche person but they make really great cookie jars
It have been told that Beverly Hills is a big market for cookie jars
Do more of these. I laughed so hard at the "rental spec Corolla"
U should try and make these types of videos for affordable cars because not Everyone can afford most of these cars
They won't be affordable for long then 😅
He used too. But just like hover tyler they got more money to play it. And went away from their roots
It's almost like good cars are expensive lol.
@@reptilez13good things cost a premium? Get the f out… 😮😮
Some people can’t afford any car so maybe he should just start making videos about hot wheels.
"It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" Eco boxes with a manual are fun, not good cars, just fun cars. This is why the Hyundai Veloster N shocked everyone when it came out, it was way better than anyone thought it would be. It was a cheap car given just enough upgraded parts to make it FUN.
love that the timestamp for the Lambo Urus is "Audi Uris"
They got me
Cool Easter egg! I wouldn't have noticed since I don't usually check the timestamps.
I would love a manual Corolla as a rental. It would absolute be the fastest car…IN THE WORLD! 😂
It was blue when you set off
I test drove a venue and genuinely loved it. you're like a richard scarry busytown character puttering around in it.
But don't let that fool you, it can break its tires loose on a dry, hot, summer day
My nomination... ANY. HONDA. CIVIC. EVER. For real. Any single one of them from any generation for the past 50 years. All fun.
How about a base 2010 with a torque converter
This is now my favourite Dougs video. Thank you!
I appreciate Alanis because she's a ray of sunny chaos. Manual Corolla is the correct answer
This is not true at all. 30k is the top of the market for SLK55s unless you want a P30 which are super rare anyway so good luck finding one.
Once she said the Urus you could see doug deciding this is the last sunday garage video
Alanis bringing the chaos to this video
Hard watch. The Corolla? You could see Doug rethinking his decision to bring her on. Also her agreeing with cars that she seconds earlier said she haven't spent time around "yea...because its just fun to drive!" Are you just agreeing with dough because its doug? boo
Lol. You two are like husband and wife arguing on which car they should buy next. 😄
Definitely agree with the Corolla. We might just be starved for lightweight though. Adding lightness helps steering and handling so much!
I still miss my '94 Tercel, regret trading it in 15 years ago!
I really value that Doug doesn't get stuck in the automotive echo chamber of most UA-cam channels. Too many car people just shout the same opinions over and over again and it makes being a car person incredibly boring. Thanks Doug!
He actually likes cars. Most automotive youtubers dont like cars, they like flashy expensive items, that's why most of them also do watches and you see them with expensive clothing.

What makes it reliable also makes it boring. Unless it's a GR Corolla.

Manual corolla, I'd a drive it like you stole it car. So much fun becUse it would cost nothing to fix. My friend had an old manual neon and I would drive it every chance I had because I would beat it to death and throw it into corners and it was terrific fun and lower speedster a porsche or higher end car.
manual corolla deserves a review. i actually agree, is a lot more fun than is looks.
Especially in the SE and Apex trims
My girlfriend has a 2012 Yaris manuel. The ride sucks but it's surprisingly zippy. Not a bad car for around town.
I have to agree with the base model, manual transmission corolla, sometimes having something with less power and less options is fun to throw around and use to its fullest extent. Plus it’s a Toyota it can take whatever you throw at it
Y'all, you don't have to say "yes, yes, uh huh" constantly while the other talks.
The manual Corolla will outlast any of these other cars😂
Doug after meeting Alanis: OK hell with it... *ahem* THIS is the Hyundai Venue!
The Kia EV6 GT is often taken to task for the 200-mile range, but it wasn't mentioned that most Taycans have the same range.
Alanis shows epic-level knowledge with her Corolla choice. I got a rental of that and it was *so* much better than it had any reason to be. On her advice alone I'd check out that transh Hyundai
Good video. Love that she’s from Texas! Represent! Still waiting for the video where Doug interviews himself, Pitch Meeting style!
Doug: ^Buys Porsche Supercar^
Also Doug: ^Uses Supercar to hold cookies^
I love Doug :-)
I could vouch for manual Corolla it is fun. The clutch engagement is the same way as Doug’s Carrera GT. You have to let off the clutch almost completely before you give it throttle. It doesn’t like to be driven the traditional way it super car like.
I definitely agree with Alanis, slow kind of bad cars with manual transmissions are so much fun. I have a 2003 Toyota Echo with a manual as an extra cheap beater car and despite that car being slow and objectively pretty bad, I have so much fun driving it around
we really don't care this is about you and your Corolla
The base model Mini hatch with the 3 cylinder engine. I was surprised on how refined it was for a 3cyl and it handled like a go kart. For driving around town I’d rather have that than a JCW.
@Doug DeMuro, Don't disrespect the modern Toyota Corolla 6 speed!! I own one and they're fun. Not everyone can afford a Porsche! Lol.
I think along with the Macan, you can insert Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV as far as most fun driving experience in an SUV.
I was thinking the same thing 😅
Manual Corolla for the win. I want a woman like Alanis. I had a 91 Corolla base model with manual and loved it. I also had an 02 Hyundai Accent manual and did a 360 on a dirt road with it because I decided I wanted to be a rally driver that day. I paid 700 bucks for both of those cars. The most fun cars are low horsepower cheap cars that you do stupid stuff in
P.S. reading these comments and I see people siding with Alanis lol Doug was wrong about that and the porches he put on his list
I love that Doug has made his money and can now just do whatever he wants on UA-cam and not really care. Love the variety that has come from that and helps make it more real and funny.
This is like the perfect juxtaposition between rich east coast snooty car enthusiast and the car enthusiast who just likes throwing around shitboxes lmao
If the Venue is fun, then the 1986 Yugo must be fantastic!
14:00 I'm sorry Doug that's too much, Alanis has completely lost my respect.
18:40 Edit: Okay I changed my mind, I gave her my respect back just so I could take it back again. Alanis, why?
I'm with @AlanisKing on this one. Econoboxes can be a blast
I have a rental Venue while my vette is in the shop, and I love it.
The two manual normie cars I agree with. My family has a manual 2020 Versa and it is, who would've ever guessed, incredibly fun to drive.
The thing about electric cars everyone seems to forget is the government law that requires all of these electrics to be able to be shut down on a federal level, remotely! Electric isn't a bad concept it's just terrible in how it's being carried out. No thanks.
My first car was a 1990 Corolla… I loved that car! It wasn’t fast, but it was fun to see how far I could push it!
I agree! For me, it's always been more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slowly.
Doug you might want to just switch Alanis’s controversial cars video with this one because damn.
Another New Zealand t-shirt !!! love it Mr Doug
::reviews Polaris Slingshot::
Alanis: And I have another one along those same lines…
Me: Lady, if you say Ariel Atom I’m deleting my UA-cam app.
Alanis: …the Lamborghini Urus.
Me: Same line?! Those lines aren’t even parallel!
A Porsche Macan with a sports exhaust sounds amazing.
Smart ForTwo. Especially the 2016-2020-ish "453" model. 5 speed manual, 3-cylinder turbo..... about the same horsepower as the Hyundai Venue. Love mine.
Thanks to Cars&Bids for bringing all these great videos ❤👏👏
The Taycan is the best styled Porsche currently available.
Bringing friends in was a great idea. It's more interesting to listen to Doug discussing things rather than just describing car gimmicks.
the R63 AMG Minivan is more fun than you might think too. It's a 500-horsepower that AMG made into a Minivan designed to shuttle kids to school it's insane. It's also one of the rarest Mercedes models to come out in recent years
Doug is the type of guy to love his S-Cargo but pick on Alanis about her manual Denim Venue.
Wow, what an obvious comment, and one repeated by a few hundred of the lowest IQ viewers on this channel in each video.
10:38 If you put a Lamborghini Urus badge on the RSQ8 most people would not question it.
That's the problem with the Urus.
I want an az1, my only fear is someone in a lifted booster seat truck won't see me
Get a dune buggy flag.
"Please don't eat in my Porsche CGT"
"Understandable, absolutely"
"You can eat *on* my car though"
"Wait what?"
You can tell they both get excited about a car when they start talking over each other
I 100% agree with the Manual Corolla, even 2014-2018 models.
Doug needs to give us his Porsche cookie recipe
German chocolate
Alanis is the best thing to happen to these Sunday opinion videos. she hasn't missed!
that was so much fun to watch. please do a part 2 to this
Of course the rental spec Corolla is fun. Clarkson himself said the best car to drive is the one you don’t own.
Doug, didn't you start as a Porsche employee? You absolutely are a Porsche person. Own it!
