- A soldier plays a war-game with children.
GAMECHANGER is used with permission from Christian van Duuren. Learn more at christianvanduuren.nl.
Thirty-year-old soldier Max is on his way to another tour of duty when he notices two local children playing a game of war with toy guns. He gets caught up in their game, playing alongside the kids as they venture into the woods surrounding their neighborhood.
But as Max loses his grip on his reality, the game of pretend suddenly feels altogether too real -- and the two young boys lose their innocence.
Director Christian van Duuren has crafted a powerful exploration of the effects that warfare has on the psyche, combining excellent camerawork and finely calibrated performances to delve deep into one man's brief descent into darkness.
The film begins on a light enough note, as a grown man joins a game played by two young boys. It seems innocent, though small moments of dissonance offer some sense of underlying unease. But as the film progresses, it transitions into something altogether taut, dark and tense, and the tonal shift is absolutely seamless.
The hand-held camera seems edgier and more nervous, and the superlative sound design captures the memories haunting Max effectively, evoking the harshness of the battlefield in the middle of a quiet, tranquil wooded area.
The performances are subtle and excellent all around, and both adult and children find perfectly specific moments to communicate their fear -- and the realization that this game is not just child's play anymore, but something much darker and complicated.
GAMECHANGER is a haunting and tense portrayal of the very human cost of warfare, whose images and emotional moments will linger with viewers well after viewing -- much like the invisible scars than many in the military struggle with, long after their battlefield days are over. - Фільми й анімація

Ah, een Putin joke.
Not particularly funny but that's the nature of the beast.
My dad was a WWII vet. They didn't have "PTSD" issues, they had "shell shock" and "war frights" and "flashbacks", and they got no help at all.
"Have a drink, it'll calm your nerves".
PTSD is the same thing, and now we understand that...and still don't do what is needed to help them. It's criminal.
@Melchior Magni yeah they had shell shock but they didn't know that about that they just thought you were a coward back then and you will be faced by a firing squad it was a terrible thing what they had to go through
In WWII they had battle fatigue. Because war makes you tired. It was WWI with the shell shock, but that suggests explosions and concussion, which would be violent and possibly depress recruitment.
Later, somebody noticed that battle fatigue has battle in it, with lots of dirt and guns and blood. So they changed the codeword to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This suggests that serving in the military is like a bad day at work. Eventually they changed that to PTSD, because stress is unpleasant.
Tomorrow they'll call it unicorn kisses.
@Melchior Magni - Shell shock isn't the same thing as PTSD. You are correct. Shell shock was neurological and a physical response to actual shells going off in the trenches at close range. PTSD is mental.
@@RobMacKendrick - that is incorrect. Look up information *before* posting, especially on serious topics where you may be interacting with those who have PTSD.

The main cause for veteran suicide that I have seen, has been the feeling of a lack of belonging - and being treated like you're a broken thing because you served.
In addition to being fed a line of bollocks about your skills being readily transitioned, and desirable to civilan employers. Which is generally cockamamy for enlisted men. Even having a trade is somewhat irrelevant given the scope of work is often completely different. Worse for infantryman, where your essential options, initially, in the the civilian world are security, labouring or attempting to put another uniform, like firemen or cop. Strangely enough, those other uniformed services are often looking more for civilian types than ex servicemen.

I, like thousands of others, can relate to this man. Combat has very strange and profound effects on all those involved. I deployed to Afghanistan twice, and among other things, it caused me to be a much more compassionate person. I avoid everything to do with violence, I don't hunt anymore, or kill ANYTHING, not a deer, snake, mouse, or even flies, nothing! However, if my life or the lives of my family were ever put in danger I certainly would react with extreme violence, but I pray that I can live the rest of my life in peace. I often think about what the world would be like if we all could love and have compassion for one another. It would be a wonderful world indeed.
