I apologise if this was not your intention, or if you don't appreciate this kind of analysis on your songs, but this song heavily reminds me of our experience with DID/OSDD - especially mine as the host who knows barely anything. Even down to the songs name - a "System Error." This is going to be very long, so I apologise if it's hard to read due to formatting. I would also like to note it is *not* my intent to directly compare DID systems with viruses, but phrasing is awkward and so if it seems that way I apologise.
Parts in specific that remind us of this and why:
"so could you tell me why // they're popping up? // there are so many // that my screen is stuck!" - The singer seems confused as to why the 'errors' or viruses - in this analysis, alters - are popping up. Perhaps they've never heard of DID before, or have but don't believe they could have it due to not remembering trauma and believing they do not have any. Who they're talking to could vary from a therapist to a friend to another system, but the theme of this part is denial. It could even tie into the part beforehand, talking about all the precautions they took, perhaps talking about the good things they remember as a way to deflect any bad that occurred?
And of course "there are so many that my screen is stuck!" The screen in question could be the bodies eyes, or control of the front. The more alters there are the more complicated it gets, especially if you're just discovering the system and everything's hitting you at once.
"losing files by the minute!" - Files in this context could be memories, because amnesia is a huge part of DID.
"DATA CORRUPTION. // PLEASE RESTART." - How DID forms is debated, but following the structural dissociation model, the 'data' mentioned could be the 'fusing' of personality states as a child. Because this data is 'corrupted,' the 'system' forms - causing more 'errors.'
"everything is speeding up and // i can't fight back!" - Ah, my old friend, dissociation. Sometimes time passes and you don't intend it to. Nothing is *literally* speeding up, but sometimes dissociation warps your sense of time and reality. It can be hard to simply 'break out' of it, or in this case, fight back.
Also this line reminds me of the whir of a laptop when overheating. Not related to the analysis, just a fun note.
"DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS AN INTERNAL FLAW" - DID is a lot more internal than people believe. Even when we finally started suspecting 'hey wait a minute' we stayed in our denial bubble for months because... surely people would have noticed differences, right? Or at least, 'I' would have.
Yeah. Doesn't work like that, Alf from the past.
"caught in the mess of my internal disbelief // can't believe i didn't see it before // searching through my archives looking for the very cause // cannot find it, it seems that I have lost" - This ties into the last line of, once you finally rip the bandaid off and realise that 'yep, systemhood likely' and finally look at all the symptoms/alters you've been repressing or just not noticed for years... you wonder *how* you didn't notice. And then, looping back to the start of the analysis, you start to wonder *why.*
Why are there so many? When did any of them form? *Why* did any of them form? Why don't you remember? All these questions flood your mind, and you try to go poking until another alter inevitably stops you... or you find out the truth, and realise why you don't.
"take over my personality! // make me someone else" - This is pretty on the nose and self-explanatory. Basically just the mood of 'someone switch with me, I'm done, I can't handle this today.'
"could you teach me? // HOW TO HOW TO HOW TO BE // A SYSTEM ERR0R // so that I can be free" - This goes back to the idea that the person is talking to a therapist, or someone who can help them manage their symptoms. Living with DID can be wonderful, but can also be deeply distressing and a good support network is helpful - unfortunately, due to it being formed via trauma, there's a very unlikely chance the person will have access to this until at least adulthood.
Basically, the song reads to me as a newly-discovered system host trying to talk with a therapist (could be a dissociation specific one, could be a general one) about their symptoms, whilst also dealing with denial.
Or maybe I'm projecting because the song is a bop. Either way.
I read this SOOO intently oh my god. That was such an amazing analysis !!! My friend has DID and this song was inspired by them plus other ND struggles!! ITS BASICALLY A ND MESS…NT could never understand. But yeah, i love love love when people dig deep into the roots of my songs, means so much to me!! UPDATE ON THIS BECAUSE I FIND IT EXTREMELY FUNNY. We are now diagnosed with DID. Our “schizophrenia” was not schizophrenia, it was in fact DID. Thought it’d be funny to let you know because so many of my songs have DID coded lyrics and themes and I had NO idea until recent.
