    I do agree, I'd rather see the tools in actual use in the hands of a pro then watch reviewers regurgitate the notes on the box while demonstrating the tools light and comfy grip texture. All the while giving it praise in order to ease their guilt over keeping it! Quick and efficient work on that belt sir! Thanks!

      Review "are" ok for initial "should I buy"... if someone is interested in a certain product, but to actually see something being used in a real work scenario, I think that would speak more than a review video. We shall see if someone gets the hint! If they send duplicate products... it would make nice giveaways! OK... now I'm dreaming (about getting duplicates)! LOL

    Thanks for the instructions. Took me 11 hours to do this job but also had to replace the camshaft seal and position sensor. Needed a friend to help me get the new timing belt on. Had to do it 3 times as the first two attempts ended with the belt one or two teeth off of top dead center. Kept moving. Also - the raised edge on the back of the tensioner goes into that freeze plug hole. Took me several attempts to figure that one out. Think I can now do the job again in 6 hours but hope not needed for at least 7 years.

      I could not own my 5 or even 1 diesel VDubs it were not for the kind and knowledgeable folks on UA-cam(tm). I am not joking. The first time I went to the VW dealer the head tech came out in a sparkling white jumpsuit, before informing me that 4 new glow plugs for our 2003 Golf GTI would be $680 US in 2009. Outragus! The straw that broke me was when a defective clutch disc disintegrated, because of faulty rivet slides and the dealer refused to honor our extended warranty. That is when I bought some new tools because I knew a new clutch did not cost $1,800 US. At the time newly designed disc only cost $89 US. So, I paid myself $1,711, canceled my extended warranty and fell in love with how well build these car are.
      As it turns out around 2006 VW ran into some serious financial problems and almost went out of business and to stay afloat the service departments adopted Audi and Porsche's service pricing and techniques (all modern super clean service areas $$$). I guess I should thank that white jumpsuited man because I have been into almost every part of my older diesels and have no fear tearing them down to put them back together again. I did a video after having my water pump go and rip the little TDI's timing belt (I rebuilt the head and that TDI is still on the road today). I recently rebuilt a 11mm ALH diesel injection pump and wow! it is an impressive device. Mostly metal construction that if you disassemble, clean and polish will make it run like new again (18 years later). I try to give back to the community that has save my $$$ and posibly my wife life. She was T-boned by a guy running a light from the passenger side by a Toyota doing 35+MPH (no skid marks) 3 years ago. The 2000 Golf looked as though nothing had happened to the interior, but outside you could see the guy hit and pushed the VW three time. Any other car and who knows. That Golf too is still on the road today. Strong, Safe, Economical, and (if you work on them yourself) affordable.
      Thanks again for all your help. I feel like you're a family friend because of all the one-sided question and answer videos you help me with. I ask a question to the screen and you show me the answer step-by-step.
      TDI Love from Chicago...

      Nice to hear that you took control and are able to maintain & repair what is needed! You have more experience with injection pumps than I do! I have never taken one apart! Good to hear that your wife was left un-injured! People give up too quickly on a car once a problem surfaces... quickly labeling it as a lemon. Any car 6 years or older will start to have issues due to age... but when looked after & maintained, cars can / will last a long time. I have two 26+ year old vehicles that run & look great!
      Thanks again for watching! I try my best in answering questions as best I can or supply factory service information when I have it. If more people thought about what I post & watched the whole thing, rather than complain about camera movement, lighting, lack of commentary etc.... they would understand that I'm actually being quite helpful (over / compared to many other youtube channels) at no cost to them.

    Honstly man I use the husky electric rachet and it’s only 32lbs about 20 down from the top 3/8ths Milwaukee but it’s less than half the cost and really any of them you need to break the bolt free anyways which I do with my Husky,! Other thing I’ve used it almost everyday for something since I’ve had it about 6months and I’ve had to charge it twice. Super impressed and stoked with it plus the pitch of the air rachet is basically the worst for your hearing out of most air tools! I haven’t had to drag a hose out other than tires and that’s awesome! Just a thought your vids are my go to for vw!

I know a great tech when I see one and am glad to give you kudos for your professionalism and skills. You have a very logical approach, are very organized, pay attention to details and use the proper tools as needed. Pointing out the advantages to servicing items such as the camshaft positioning sensor while accessible is good advice as well and I'm sure your customers appreciate your though approach to caring for their cars. Belts can look good (smooth flat surface) but the teeth can let loose... if you don't know how old it is, replace the timing belt, tensioner & water pump. It is cheaper to replace those items, than having to pull the cylinder head to replace bent valves.

    I noticed in this and another of your videos that you drain the coolant at the oil cooler hose instead of the actual stop cock drain port. Is there a reason you prefer to drain from the oil cooler hose?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 років тому +1

      The stop cock at the radiator? That only drains the radiator... not the engine. Draining at the oil cooler doesn't "fully" drain the engine block... but it drains most, whereas at the radiator, only the radiator gets drained (unless the thermostat is fully open, but then you have hot coolant to deal with).

Very subtle hints there with the Milwaukee images... You're absolutely correct though, not just Milwaukee... all these tools companies send free tools to reviewers but rarely to the people who actually use them day after day. Perhaps you can turn up the volume on the power tools, I don't yet have a perminate ringing in my left ear. Another option is for you to whispering at a lower frequency, so I have to turn up the volume, which will cause my speakers will rupture when you use your power tools.
    Make sure you don't use a "limiter/Modulator" plugin when editing. It would automatically boost the low volume and reduce the extremely loud sounds. This would result in joy while watching your video.

    Must just be me, but I find releasing that engine side of the mounting bracket considerably more awkward than you made it look.

    Is there a factory timing mark on the crank pulley (the toothed crank pulley for TB, not the serp one that gets removed). If not, where should the transmission mark be? Bottom or middle of peephole.
    Finally, if TB jumped 1 tooth would it throw a crank/cam code, or cause significant symptoms? Thanks Thomas!

    • @slipperyslope3912
      @slipperyslope3912 4 роки тому

      Hey Thomas, wasn't removing it! YT was auto deleting it for using the abbreviation of "transmission". Very odd. It's here now!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks, sorry.
      When the cam pulley is at TDC... the TDC mark at the transmission should be visible and at the correct location (marks aligned) as long as the timing belt did not jump or the belt was installed incorrectly last time.
      The crank pulley has a little notch that is at the 12 o'clock position when the crank is at TDC. First, turn the crankshaft until the camshaft gear TDC mark is pointing at the mark on the valve cover. Then look for the TDC mark at the crank pulley or at the flywheel. Send me pictures of the cam gear, the crank gear and the transmission TDC inspection hole, so that I can see what things look like. Click on the fkh161 link in the description and then click on "tool request" to send me the pictures.

      @@EXOVCDS Thanks so much. I'll try to get pic in next few weeks but I think I'm ok based on your response.
      I did the belt, but left all covers off to wash engine to ensure new waterpump not leaking. I got misfires after the wash (with CEL) which went away after 30mins. No cam/crank codes, misfire only. I think this was from the infamous aging coil issue, not the coincidental belt change.
      What confused me is my crank SERP pulley mark is off, but I removed it during install, so doesn't necessarily mean my timing is off.
      I marked the crank TIMING pulley (toothed one), like a bozo on the inside of the tooth, so my mark wore off from the belt. I understand my mistakes for next time now.
      Power curve seems weird at rare times, but based on your response and the car function I think it's ok. Thanks for your expertise Thomas!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 роки тому +1

      Misfires after engine washing means that there are some "weak/ compromised / old age" ignition components. If spark plug wires & coil are more than 8 years old, it's a good time to start planning for new parts.
      Serpentine belt (belt for Alternator, AC & power steering) has no bearing on engine timing. You can run the engine with the serpentine belt off. Marking the timing belt with a marker & matching marks on the timing gears is OK for initial installation, but the marks on the belt will not line up after the engine / crankshaft is rotated 2 turns (to recheck TDC alignment). This is due to the length of the belt / number of teeth... the marks will line up again with the marks on the gears, but it will take several more rotations. This can be confusing for people and that's why I don't recommend marking the timing belt / relying on other marks, aside from the factory TDC marks.

    Have you done one on the water pumps on the newer common rail diesel engine. They have a sieve over the impeller that is operated on and off by a soilnoid to stop water circulation and speed up warming up of engine. They stick closed and engine overheat quickly. Timing of engine locking is still pinned but has centre bolt on a taper on cam and fuel pump.

      You can check your "camshaft position sensor" with a voltmeter to see if it is producing a signal. Here is a video on how to check it on a 2.0L (1.8T will be the same / similar, the sensor is in a different location but also close to the timing belt cover):

      Yea I bought the car from a friend with a timing belt that had broke so you already know that the valves got bent so I bought a new head and installed it got it all together and got that code. Car runs but has a slit spit or puff that u can hear. I replaced all plugs crank sensor cam sensor water pump timing belt I mean everything. Now I'm at a dead end other the replacing the wiring harness or following wired to see if ones broken. I also ordered a new pcv valve and elbow bc I have some blow back threw the valve cover and from what I found it can be bc of a bad pcv system. Anything u can recommend will help a lot

    How much too replace the water pump

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 роки тому +2

      To do a water pump, the timing belt has to be removed... you might as well do a timing belt service at the same time (including the tensioner and cam / crank seals if the seals are leaking). Depending on where you are (country / state) labor rate will be different from shop to shop. You are better off phoning a local business in "your" area, to get a quote estimate. Estimate means an "initial" idea of cost... as you don't know if the vehicle needs anything else until stuff is taken apart (like the seals). If the belt is not that old, it can be reused... but if it got contaminated by coolant, the life of the belt is compromised. Go to this website and type your postal code in the search field... to find a reputable shop in your area.
