If there is probable cause to believe that a vessel represents the proceeds of illegal or corrupt activities, then the authorities should be transparent about the evidence within a reasonable time period.

    • @JackBooth1206

You’re correct. The UK government have acknowledged that the detention of this vessel is not as a result of any anti money laundering nor spurious economic activity. The owners business activities have been gone through with a fine tooth comb, and the FCO have declined no fewer than 11 requests from the former minister of transport, to place this owner on the sanctions list, citing “no lawful justification to do so”.

I believe in a working civil society everyone should be treated equally within the laws of the jurisdiction they are in. I also think that everyone should be able to defend themselves against any accusations in a reasonable amount of time. The UK Government needs to present evidence and give this owner a chance to defend themselves in court.

On 15 June 1215 King Edward of England signed The Great Charter of Freedoms...better known as the Magna Carta. "Could be" Russian owned, "might be" owned by a Russian, doesn't seem in the spirit of that historic document.
As governments everywhere take away more and more individual liberties and freedoms, think back to what people fought for nearly a thousand years ago.

No, the taxpayer will be. As I understand the legal system, first the owner would need to get the court to agree the yacht was seized unlawfully and should be released. Then the owner can sue for the cost of that detention. This would probably include damages, depreciation, wages, services, and potentially loss of charter revenues. As it's a superyacht, this would get expensive and Grant Shapps won't be billed.

The UK citizens should get behind releasing this yacht because the owner will successfully sue for financial damages and tax payers will be on the hook for the extensive bills.

The owner of this yacht has been very easy to find, from day 1. Ownership is not in question and has not been for over a year now, neither is source of wealth a question. Neither is his total lack of connection to Putin, or any other politician. He isn’t ex military, he isn’t former KGB, he isn’t even a billionaire. The ONLY grounds for continuing the detention are that he is “connected to Russia” - by way of living there.

It is impossible to be a billionaire in Russia without connections to Putin's government.
I agree that UK gov should justify their actions, but to claim he's not politically connected is simply absurd.

Billionaire, true. But there are plenty of millionaires who are self made in Russia

Well said. I believe anyone who has managed to accrue enough money to spend it buying super yachts is necessarily a crook/amoral and I'm all for arresting their toys/status symbols. They shouldn't exist on the same planet as a child growing up in poverty.

So the billionaire gets his yacht cared for by the UK Gov. for two years? Not sure who is playing who here. With shell companies ownership can be disguised. The UK may have a very good idea of what is going on before having proof. What billionaire Russian was allowed to be created without the aid of the Russian Govt? They are created and destroyed by its needs and whims, IMO.

    • @YachtReport
      @YachtReport  11 місяців тому

the yacht is not 'being looked after' He still pays the bills for the crew, power, expenses etc. They are just preventing the vessel from leaving.
In every other case, the person has been sanctioned when they have evidence they are helping the Russian regime.

UK has 12 000 military personnel illegally occupying Iraq and sending weapons to help the Ethnic Cleansing of Gaza. Does that mean the world can detain any British owner of a vessel?

You do not "imprison" yachts, you "detain" them.

This detention UK & US are doing along with other countries may make these governments feel strong and righteous but what has this done to the Super Yacht industry and the hundreds if not thousands of in house workers and subcontractors. This is what should also be your focus.
