I still remember the feel in the hall that night. Everything was very mysterious and dark. Remember it was 1973. No Internet. We got our info from magazines like Circus, Hit Parader, Rolling Stone. I was there the 29th, the 3rd night. Amazing show. Still remember Plant's vocal (No Quarter) echoing thru MSG, and Bonham's Gong becoming a ring of fire at the end of Whole Lotta Love. 16 years old getting our minds blown. Good Times.
Glad it did, i wrote this to the sound of Stairway live....so much meaning in these shows right? We are lucky to have discovered the greatest band of the 70s!
Your attention to detail is mind blowing, thank you. I was in my last year of high school when TSRTS came out. My friends and I talked about Dazed, Stairway and Bonham, those were the days.
My pleasure Greg, thank YOU for watching. This soundtrack changes one's life right? My high school buddies were into Linkin Park, i suffered a lot hahahahah
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Changed mine my friend, I don’t believe any band could capture the power and mystery of Dazed and Confused, and then Bonhams finale. Who could match that.
Listening to Led Zeppelin from their first album onward, but becoming a rabid fan after witnessing their live performance at the San Diego Sports Arena on March 10, 1975… I read everything I could get my hands on about the band and practically memorized every solo on TSRTS. Like you, I was absolutely shocked and dismayed that they screwed with the solo in No Quarter. I had that solo isolated on numerous Maxell UDXLII cassette tapes and then later on CDR’s because I think it was his best solo on the double live album. There are other edits Page could’ve done without touching that masterpiece of a guitar solo. In fact, the opening “statement“ to his No Quarter guitar solo is just freaking genius… Why he would cut that out makes no sense at all. Thank you for these wonderful presentations, JCM.
Coming of age in the 1980s I snuck out with friends to watch the midnight movie of TSRTS. Having heard the album a lot I fell in love with SIBLY from the movie which was left off the original double album. I went out and rented TSRTS and hooked up the surround sound (a daunting task in 1984) and taped it for my boombox pleasure.
I did the same exact thing with all of the songs from the film. A few years later used early audio software to create my own playlists with the film audio of all the songs. I made my own CDs as well.
I ran the audio out from our VCR into my stereo and made cassettes of the full audio from the movie. SIBLY was the greatest thing I ever heard at that point and couldn't believe they left it off the soundtrack. I was really upset when the expanded soundtrack came out and they cut out the one bum note in Jimmy's intro solo. For over 20 years I'd been hearing that song warts and all and that's exactly how I want it lol.
I snuck a portable cassette recorder into one of the midnight screenings just to record “Since I’ve Been Loving You” because it hadn’t been released on VHS yet and there was nowhere else to get it. I still have that cassette copy today.
I once had a tape qued up and ready to hit record for probably a year before I finally caught Her Hey What Can I Do? on the radio! Probably around 84 or 85.
Wow! Thank you so much for this! Me and my friends used to go to Midnight showing of TSRTS every weekend in Westwood California. Great times! You have brought me much joy knowing that the album/soundtrack are indeed Led Zeppelin live at their absolutely blistering best! Thank you again!
I like how the bit they cut out of No Quarter is probably the most stunning sequence of music of the seventies. That’s like a pact with the devil in reverse
Another incredible episode JCM.. This is the one I'd been waiting for. I wasn't sure what it was going to reveal. I was so relieved to find, contrary to belief, that there were NO guitar overdubs. Just guitar edits, which is absolutely fine as every note was played live over those 3 nights.... Absolutely agree regards NQ solo - Jimmy's finest ever and probably one of the greatest guitar solos by any guitarist imho. It's eloquent, lyrical and steeped with emotion and with that guitar tone was just absolute perfection and beauty. It should never, never have been edited....
Well, there’s 1 on the old movie mix in Rock N Roll (not to fix anything but to fill out the guitar a bit, maybe for the surround. It was removed for the remix.
David! Thanks for watching! Glad you found out the urban legend of overdubs is simply not true. There is a brief, a milimetric overdub guitar layers in Rock and Roll but it's so minimal i did not include it here. I love Jimmy's tone at MSG 1973, the careful mix of gain yet contour without dry 1975-ing it.
Completely the original Album release version of No Quarter is in my opinion the best guitar solo ever. I don't usually pick favorites of things because there is so much great stuff out there, but that solo is absolutely amazing from start to finish. Dorian Mode at it's finest. I remember playing along with it years ago and they were playing notes that i was wondering how they fit.
Just started this episode going to love it. You know I think Bonham is saying “okay let’s go” instead of “alright.” 😂 His heavy heavy accent. I could be wrong. And BTW that is an incredible sequence - they come charging out and the energy and confidence on stage and in the audience is so high!
These 3 shows by far is Zeppelin at thier best! The people in new york were very lucky to be there! The performances were extraordinary with all 4 members at thier best! Incredible improvising and its simply magical! I mean from rock n roll to tsrts into the rain song and no quarter, stairway dazed and confused and whole lotta love absolutely phenomenal every fukin note and the blistering since ive been loving you!!! The most amazing note for note solo in the stairway jam is beyond measure brilliant! Bonham killed it on md and showed why he is considered one of the best ever!!! The 77 shows at the forum in LA were horrible loud and distorted! Nothing close to 73! Page and plant with Michael Lee on drums was filmed in 95 in Irvine ca and those concerts were excellent far better than the 77 disaster! Luxky to have tsrts and page and plant concerts on DVD! And all the studio brilliance, all 10 albums! Each album so different ,so many great songs on each with hot dog being thier worst tune ever released along with down by the seaside! Not bad for 10 albums where 90 percent of their songs are incredible!!! I feel fortunate born in 63 to really be exposed to thier music when I was 10 years old! Zep 4 really kicked my ass, one of the finest rock albums ever!!! Then the release of presence and the masterful physical graffiti! Great time to grow up! Huge fan and appreciation untiĺ I take my last breath!!! Cj Smith LA,CA 90291
I just listened to the bootleg from MSG 29th the 3rd night. The celebration solo sounds like the soundtrack of movie. Jimmy was unbelievable at this point of his playing & tone. I’ve never heard that solo on any other bootleg recordings. That answered a question I had for 40 years!!!
Hey JCM: I just saw ROBERT PLANT and ALISON KRAUSS in Stanford, CA.... ROBERT PLANT.....Robert effin' PLANT!!! It was phenomenal to hear that voice and see the man singing it on stage in the same airspace in real time..... It was beautiful. I just had to brag a little bit to you bro.... What I really wanted to say is thank you for the series. As always give me more information about ever find out by myself and it brings me closer to the band. I really appreciate your work brother.... Fantastic music musicianship..... you sir you can play that guitar unlike many people I've seen. More please. Rock on from Oakland California
My very first concert, memorialised forever. Little did I know that when I later saw and heard TSRTS that I was getting parts of the 28th and 29th as well🤫. Great job as always; LMAO at the Gerber bit.
I listened to the remastered TSRTS over my last couple of runs. As much as I loved the original soundtrack I am glad the reissues have missing tunes such as Celebration Day, Since I've Been Loving You, Misty Mountain Hop, Over The Hills and Far Away, and Heartbreaker. These fit nicely with the original songs on the soundtrack. In my opinion, this is 'Peak Zeppelin' and one of THE greatest live albums ever! Thanks for these episodes Juan. These really take me back and let me re-live Zeppelin in all their early 70's glory 🤩
I remember when a local radio station (96 Rock FM in Atlanta) was playing the soundtrack songs from The Song Remains the Same movie back in 80's and early 90's. Check this out! There was only two Atlanta radio stations that played Led Zeppelin's music: 96 Rock and this Classic Rock station that was also on FM. The oldies stations, on the other hand, hardly played Led Zeppelin. I don't know any oldies station that played Led Zeppelin except for one from SiriusXM; however, someone had to request the DJ to play "Stairway to Heaven." Another thing, 96 Rock played Led Zeppelin's 1980 version of "Train Kept A Rollin" live from Frankfurt, Germany, and that was the best version of that song because it was full of energy and had that early 70's Led Zeppelin sound. Even they played 1971 live concert on BBC from Led Zeppelin, and that was way before Jimmy Page decided to released "Complete BBC Sessions" album in 1997. Lastly, 96 Rock had a weekly Midnight segment for Led Zeppelin called the "Zep Set." and they played Led Zeppelin songs for half an hour. I used to record Led Zeppelin's songs off the radio when I was a kid! 😄
@25:50, an extra AH was removed? Who knew? Oh wait you did. Once I hit puberty there was really only one thing on the planet I cared about and it was Zeppelin and it lasted for years. I'm talking the ONLY albums I listened to and owned was the Led Zeppelin discography up to Coda. I saw them in concert in 1977 at the Oakland Coliseum then I branched out and let the rest of the music in. I know The Song Remains the Same both movie and the soundtrack by heart so I find this extremely interesting and appreciated. 🙈
That "half cocked" wah pedal sound, was and still is, a common way to get that British tone, in conjunction with a Marshall Plexi. Mick Ronson, Micheal Schenker and many others I cant think of right now have had in their trick bag forever. MAN great series you have compiled. Keep it coming!
JCM, the amount of comprehensive research you did is to be commended. Outstanding. I always thought I picked up on most of the cuts and edits, but I could never in a million years put it together like that. I'm not a fan of any of the 2007 edits. And yes, the 2007 NQ solo edit is a travesty. Eye thank yew for everything you do.
Paul thanks so much. Now remember i will post a SCENE by SCENE analysis on Patreon which you will enjoy, an exclusive video that will probably never see the light of day here on UA-cam hehe. Now i need to make more coffee!
Remarkable in every way. A real delight for any true Zeppelinist. I always wondered about that picture of Jimmy in the Album. Of course it seems out of placed. Most likely but not for certain is that it is from 1975 strictly because of the length of Page’s hair. It’s longer and more robust then in 73’. Thank You as always for such a Treasure.😊
Thanks for this great video. A must watch for all fans of this era. As far as Robert's singing: 1973 he was still trying to do an Elvis soul sound. By 1975 it's more of a Mick Jagger sneer.
The cut on "No Quarter" is the best thing Zep cut. It's my favorite jam. Bonham-Page-JPJ are playing almost independently when Jimmy is playing rhythm, but they're so together and tight. The solo is my favorite live one, and I can only listen to the uncut version... It wasn't until 15 years ago where I finally heard the album version of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", but I didn't consider a different version from "The Echoes of Pink Floyd" box set, and discovered that being Pink Floyd's worst cut -- the best part of the guitar solo - the harmonizer -- it's too great.
Hi Jose, I remember buying a special issue of the British magazine *Q* at a Barnes & Noble bookstore at one of my local shopping malls in the early 2000s. The issue was ENTIRELY devoted to Led Zeppelin. This Special Edition went into great detail about the aesthetics, artists, artwork, concepts, colour printing and processing techniques, and obscure, secret and esoteric meanings of the artwork on (and in) each and every Led Zeppelin album cover. It also included factual, historical and other technical information. Up until that point in time, no other magazine ever offered this amount of overwhelming and tremendously detailed knowledge and enlightenment. Though the music was assessed, critiqued and discussed to a fair degree, the album cover artwork was the main feature. I learned so much (then-new-to-me) information about my favourite albums! The section that covered *THE SOUNDTRACK FROM THE FILM THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME* said: [and I’m paraphrasing here] - Due to his brilliance, credit and praise must be given to Eddie Kramer - for his engineering expertise and reputation for capturing the very best electric guitar sounds on tape. [This next quote is verbatim]: ‘The sound is so clean, you can wipe a baby’s behind with it.’ LOL! 🎸🥁🎹🎤🧼🫧🚿🎚🎛🎚🔊🎶👶🏼
Wow just a few seconds into Rock and Roll and I distinctly remember Bonzo shouting "okay let's GO".... and not "alright let's go"!. Fascinating! I also remember back in the early 80's buying the double live vinyl album and compared to the film,Robert's voice sounded far richer and deeper on vinyl. Granted, TV sets weren't as great back in the 80's (maybe ours had been thrown in the pool 😂) but it was noticeable! And also, for the first part of Jimmy's rock and roll solo, I distinctly remember him using a volume pedal to increase the volume for a couple of notes. Now I can't find it, my original VHS tape broke years ago! You Sir are worthy of a PhD yourself ❤. Later today I am joining 999 fellow musicians to perform some Linkin Park songs so this is a great way to ease into the day. I thank you. You might be thinking 1,000 musicians? Check out "Rocking 1,000" here on UA-cam. Nervous but excited! Thanks dear Friend. I will be in touch, I am really enthusiastic about a potential music collaboration with you, you're my Hero ❤
Great series of the best live album by the best band. They were at their peek. Jimmy owned every other rock guitarist those nights. Everything was magic. Thanks for your excellent work.
Went by so fast, but I swore I almost heard Bonzo play the same fill in his solo on the tympani, that sounds like the beginning fill to Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag. Then again, I hear all sorts of weird things when I hear them in other places. And even more strangely when they seem to have years between them. I never owned the new remaster. But that's crazy he chopped the solo out. But I'm sure I would have also been the same in the wtf department. And i so want that Atlantic pressing of Physical Graffiti. Just looks so wrong and cool looking. Thanks for another awesome video. Think I will throw on the dvd now.
Listening to this one really brings back my teenage years as Led Zeppelin was my gateway to so... much great music from the 70s and some 60s music as well. The three amigos in a 1980 GMC van with smoke and a cassette deck that never had a break.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories The van was a 1980 GMC, but the year was 1983 in grade 9. Nevertheless, it was a great time listening to 70s classics, and the 80s music was just beginning. Our fave was In though the out Door on cassette.
Ooohhhh boy. (Just starting the video) this is going to be good. Ive been deconstructing these shows with the help of the Garden Tapes site, so this is right up my alley. Cant wait!!
Inspired by this series, I went back and listened to the entire original album the past few days - twice. I was literally moved to tears at points. There's nothing else I can say about it. That's how important to me it was (and is).
I would practise Jimmy Page Guitar dance moves with this album(over and over again ) with a tennis racquet as a 16 year in old in one's bedroom back in 87 !
Hello Jose from L.A. Awesome job as usual. I am a fan of the original 1976 pressing as it was my first Zep LP I bought. I remember buying it at Tower on Sunset. Could not get enough of it. I am looking for the Argentine press in Spanish looks awesome. Best wishes!!!
I’m absolutely floored at how you find all this information. Fantastic!!!! I’m still curious about the solo on Celebration day unless I missed it. No Quarter solo cut is a shame as that solo is mind blowing. The cuts from different nights in the same song simply 🤯👏👏👏👏👏👏
Man! Thank God for all your good work hopefully opening the ears and minds of a generation that is accepting AI produced tracks as real music,,yes technically music,,but lacking soul and pain. Keep the great and needed work up!!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Cheers! Your videos are truly masterful, insightful, educational and just plain fun to watch. I watched your YES TORMATO video and loved it. I love that album and the "orphan" albums - the funky ones. Gems they are!
Orphan albums yes. They deserve light and while we DON'T have to like them i believe the context always tells a story worth revisiting. Hope you enjoy the rest of the stuff here :)
Didn't mention that I love that main promotional poster. Such good balance, contrast, and elements. The song translations are hilarious! I speak quite a bit of Spanish.
Fantastc !! Love the comparison of the cuts. I do not have any bootlegs from these nights and this makes me want to seek them out. I never trade in the OG CD of TSRTS so I am glad to have it since there were changes. I say this every time but just awesome work Jose !! Thank you for the time and work you do in your content !!!
Many live albums were cobbled together from multiple shows. The Song Remains The Same is still my favorite live Zeppelin album. Even Delicate Sound of Thunder had multiple edits. Money had on the original album four edits about 2 minutes cut (Tim Renwick’s guitar solo after Guy Pratt’s bass solo, David Gilmour’s guitar and Scott Page’s sax dual solos, half of Richard Wright’s keyboard solo and half of Jon Carin’s organ solo was excised) and on the remaster there was six cuts the aforementioned and Guy’s bass solo was and the female acapella section was removed and placed into the reggae section. The original Comfortably Numb was shorter by 2 minutes but mostly restored sans part of Gilmour’s delayed whammy bar execution was trimmed. Queen Rock Montreal was a combination of the two Montreal performances and even some songs were from both nights. Brian May’s guitar solo was mostly from night one with a section of night two added. Night two had Freddie wearing shorts for the encore while Night One had him in jeans the whole encore with Jailhouse Rock done in a proto-thrash version. Another phenomenal live album released in 1976 was J Geils Band Blow Your Face Out. In fact was recorded in my state’s home capital of Boston in November 1975 (two months before I was born in January 1976). 1976 was a great year for Rock and Roll albums and I am biased as I was born 24 days into 1976 and a week after Frampton Comes Alive was released and that was all live except for part of the first verse of Something’s Happening, the rhythm guitar on Show Me the Way and the piano on I Wanna Go to the Sun which were fixed at Electric Lady Studios but the solos, drums, talkbox, bass guitar and rest of the vocals, guitars and other keyboards were all live. I got crucified by KISS fans when I stand by my statement that PULSE, The Song Remains the Same, Seconds Out, Exit…Stage Left and Live After Death are my Five Favorite Live Albums.
I saw Queen's Montreal film on IMAX, was bored halfway through for some reason, can you believe that? Interesting you mentioned J Geils Band, been getting into their live material lately, what a great band. The rhythm guitar on Show me the way was overdubbed? no way!!!!!! Your choice of live albums is SUPERB man!
Hi José! After you started this series about TSRTS, I reread “Light & Shade: conversations with Jimmy Page” by Brad Tolinski, an excellent book, curious, fun and interesting. Jimmy talks about the movie, and the “patches” that were inserted (I always wondered about Jones’ weird wig and why Jimmy has long or short hair in several scenes)… I haven’t rewatched the movie yet, I was waiting for your insights on it, I’m sure many things will become clearer after this, your research is valuable. And every time I see a pic of Jimmy with his daughter Scarlet, or Scarlet herself now an adult, I remember that he said he took the little one to see the movie, and in the hermit scene, everyone was silent and all you could hear was the child’s voice shouting “it’s not daddy! it’s not daddy!” 😂 thanks again for the great episode, take care, see ya! 👍😊
Hello Marcia! That's a great book i've heard. Tolinski is a Zepp fan so it's a guaranteed read. Once you see the movie past these episodes yeah, there's new dimensions to discover indeed. That's so cool that Scartlet shouted that hehehehe. poor kid, she was probably freaking out! Stay safe and hope you have a great week!
Thanks again José! The No Quarter question, why they did it on the 2007 release? It is important to notice that also in the Movie there was this cut. So the soundtrack audio was now the same as in the movie. Also the end of the guitarsolo is different now. But the did not do the same with The Rainsong. In the movie there is also a cut in the beginning of the rock part, but they did not change it on the 2007 version. The question remains why? Also why did they do it in the movie? We have to ask Jimmy, that he allowed to cut away one of the best guitar work he has done! Hopefully this will be fixed in the new version of The Song Remains the Same we can have in 2024! Here you have a version of No Quarter which I made of the different nights: ua-cam.com/video/tFZy4ot2O2g/v-deo.html
I heard, that for LZ to get permission to release and remaster the songs for the 2007 release, that the filmmaker or someone, requires that the music on the CD, match the music in the movie. At least us fans finally got the music on CD that we deserved to have in 1976... SIBLY OTHAFA HB etc
ANyone else notice the question asked to the Train conductor before No Quarter? It's gone completely on the latest Blue Ray, but it's still audible on the 99 DVD. I miss that, and I don't get why they do stuff like that.
Exceptional as predicted! I’ve learned so much watching your series. I’ve decided No Quarter IS my favorite after watching your production. Hadn’t you pointed out the cut of jimmy’s solo in the 2007 release, I might’ve never picked up on it. It’s a damn shame! Thanks for your productions.
I miss the whistle from someone in the crowd during Stairway after Robert says: "and my spirit is crying for leaving." It was edited out in later remasters. Fans of the group who grew up listening to the original soundtrack from back in the day became so used to hearing it that years later during Live Aid and the 1988 Atlantic Records reunions you can hear someone in the crowd whistle because it became so engrained in our minds that it should still be in there. When I hear newer remasters and it's gone, it sounds like something is missing.
That's right, i forgot about that whistle. Remasters tend to polish everything so it can be released as new product. The 1980s reunions were awesome, despite it's flaws, i love em'! Thankfully we can revisit the originals!
Born in '69 so i missed out on Zeppelin's heyday but around '79/80 i cut my Zeppelin teeth on the original '76 release when i discovered my stepdads record collection. He also had Physical Graffiti. Next thing i know im becoming a Led freak, buying all the albums, wall to wall nearly all Zeppelin posters, tapestries, bought buttons, books, bootlegs, you name it. At one point had all albums on vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and several 8-tracks. As far as TSRTS, Overall i like the original release best, its solid and not choppy sounding, but i often listen to the more current versions for the better sound.
@@youtoo2233 similar story - born in 70. The first record I had was Led Zeppelin IV in 1977. It set a real high bar. I remember it made me feel like I was in the presence of something supernatural. Then an older brother said okay you like that, check out the White Album and Who’s Next. That’s how one grows up with rock as their religion.
Thank you very much for your production. Very special sentiment that resonates deeply with my past, present and indeed the future! (Did you hear Jimmy say those words on his 88 tour? Philly perhaps……)

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I certainly meant no offense. Forgive me. I thought AFTER someone had watched the whole video, they might want to revisit specific songs...its only an index, not meant to detract from your stellar information and commentary. Also, not unlike "The Garden Tapes" site where one could "jump" to the details of any song they wish. Again, please, no offense was meant nor implied.
Tremendous work again JCM. Some of the detail is astounding. Hats off to you. I absolutely love that heavy riff that Page plays followed by that ascending blues before Plant sings "Now listen" in the version of The Rain Song. One of my favourite moments from the live album.
Thank you very much Robt5339! That riff oh yes, it's similar to the rhythm work he does on Celebration Day right on the C hord on the chorus. Fantastic!
Bravo! The most comprehensive look anyone will get on the movie and beyond. On the remaster front: listening in headphones is all I need to decide the original sounds better. Just listen to Jones’ bass! On the No Quarter cut: maybe Jimmy just didn’t care? He probably thinks he has played better in other shows! Looking forward to what is next from JCM studios. Do you ever take a break???
Matt that's a great question, i don't take breaks cause i just remind myself of the old corporate job that let me go back in June 2023 lol. That and traffic....keeps me well motivated! Thank YOU very much for watching these.
Almost 4,000 views so far and it's not even up 24 hours yet. This 4 part series was very well done. I have one idea for a future deep dive, maybe a look into the two last Zep shows in the US, the day on the green and the whole backstage assault, arrests, ets. Yes it's a story we all know but would be interesting to see if there's anything additional you could find out from any other sources.
Paul i like the idea of a two part series on Oakland 1977. I read the articled by LedZepNews and he even got contacted by a private party to Stop his research. The political and money theories behind the incident are clear to me but legally i wouldn"t risk myself sharing my thoughts. Now as a Concert and Time/Place i can certainly provide a retrospective. The other alternative Paul is of course go Deep and Share this video as a Patreon exclusive and maybe this is the way to do it! 4800 views at the moment is good but ironically lower than Episode 1 and 2 which did better. Its usually happens on Episodes that have a lot of Audio Snippets it seems :)
I loved that original package. I was a little kid and loved that picture of Page by the drum riser but didn’t understand why there was a riser because I hadn’t seen one in the film. Are you sure that thumbnail of Bonham isn’t from Shepperton? It looks like the Black Dog close ups.
In addition to being a Led Zep and a Genesis fan, I’m also a fan of the Grateful Dead. If you ever consider a doc on the Grateful Dead, I would love it.
Oh man i couldn't do that because the Dead is one classic rock area i know NOTHING about. I of course have heard a couple of their 700 million boots hehe, but i am puzzled always because they have so much music. You'd have to give me a roadmap. Europe 72 is a very good album!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Yeah I got familiar with them in my late 30’s when Sirius started the Grateful Dead channel in 2007. I learned a lot from that. They recorded many of their shows themselves which is why many bootlegs are soundboards. They play them on that Sirius channel. The audience recordings are circulated bc of the crowd reaction sounds. They are all now online in places like Internet Archive. Jerry Garcia is one of my favorite guitarists and singers bc he was a student of all musical styles. His guitar tone is so pitch perfect. A master melodic improvisational player.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Oh you want a roadmap starting point? I got you. Start with their album “American Beauty.” Came out in 1970 or so. This happens to be one of my favorite albums of all time. It was a departure from the 60’s psychedelia. This album is roots country-flavored (at times) rock. The tunes are catchy, the vocals and harmonies resonate with your soul, the lyrics are at times poignant (largely by lyricist Robert Hunter). Highlights include “Box of Rain,” “Candyman” and “Brokedown Palace.” However, the entire album is a masterpiece of American rock.
The way Page shifts between rhythm and lead is incredible. He does the work of two and even three guitarists at times. It's no wonder playing live so much took its toll. The complexity and virtuosity of his work is unmatched by anyone.
The pic of Jimmy w raised right arm next to the drum riser is Olympia Sta., Detroit ‘75. It is during Black Dog - at the end of the famous riff and at the beginning of any given verse by Robert, Jimmy would strike this pose, all the while depressing an open A chord, which makes perfect sense. There’s a bit of 8mm footage from this Detroit concert and it includes Black Dog and we see Jimmy strike this pose. Neal Preston could’ve very well been in the photographer pit at this gig because he tagged along with Zeppelin in early ‘75. Check out that footage and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Now, I’ve known for years that the “Soundtrack release” was a giant puzzle of parts and later put together by Page. It’s nice though to see/hear JCM’s disassembly then reassembly of it all right before my eyes. Back in the eighties and nineties we didn’t have UA-cam remember. We had Maxell cassette tapes and turntables. All live releases need cleaning up in a studio but when it comes to Zeppelin and its founder and clever guitarist, nothing was easy. Everything had to be top standard! Thank you Jose for this analysis.
L.B i am all over the pics you sent, i think OLYMPIA 1975 is the clear winner here. What doesn't add up is the black shirt he seems to be wearing, it looks like a fabric surface rather than his chest.
Stumbled across the Garden Tapes years ago Insane detail, Page would overdub like one or two notes or just a short phrase here or there, probably covering bum notes Great work
Fantastic summary to an incredible series Jose, you’re research is impeccable. Filled in many gaps for me. I mentioned Shepperton to Jimmy via his web site many years ago. He has never tried to cover up the sessions. I wonder if he still has the recordings they made? I don’t think it was all mimed? Roberts vocals were a big issue as you’ve picked up on. At Electric Magic in 1971 at Wembley the sound was awful, my mate was in attendance. For me TSRTS is missing the acoustic set, a crucial part of what Zeppelin were about. Bron Yr Stomp was one of the highlights at Earls Court. The film missed the essence of Zeppelin for me. I saw it at Tottenham Court Road the week of the premiere loved it but felt it was a shadow of how good they really were in 1975. Hats off to you JCM, love the content 👍✌️🎶
Thanks JCM. This whole series was fantastic. One small edit that always stood out to me was on Stairway, not sure if you addressed it, sorry if I missed it. On the original, when Robert goes into his “Ooohh baby baby baby darlin” ad lib, it always sounded like there were two voices overlapping each other for a brief moment. When I was younger I thought it might have been an echo or an artifact of the acoustics in MSG. This anomaly is not present in the remaster however, so I’m guessing that what I hear on the 1976 version it due to some splicing in another vocal from another night. But it was always the part that jumped out at me all these years. It doesn’t in any way detract from the song though, and added to the mystique of the album. The original 1976 TSRTS album is probably the most important album in my personal musical development. If I had only one album to have on a desert island, this would be it.
Hey Bob thanks so much for watching. I know exactly the overdub that you mean, somehow i missed but i will feature this on my Patreon scene by scene analysis. It was definitely a studio punch-in because like you said, sounds like two Robert Plants going at it. I agree, the live soundtrack is an essential album, what a TREASURE!
"Dazed & Confused" on the 2007 vinyl is actually a little shorter than any other version. Because the song is split over 2 sides, the fade out & fade back in actually repeats itself slightly, but there's certain bits that are different. On 2007 CD, it's 29:18. The 2007 vinyl, over 2 sides, is 27:54 combined.... 19:57 & 8:57 added together.
Back in the late seventies I rented The song remains the same on betamax and I had two machines so I transferred it over to VHS. The version you see now is different from the original version that came out in slightly different ways.
Agreed! Thing is, copyright wise, the new remasters add in to the catalogue, meaning, not compete with the first time around as new copyright can only happen if the new release is different.
I don't think one can go without sleep for 5 days! (Even with ahem...stimulants) it would drive you literally insane. Seriously, look up sleep deprivation studies. It's supposed to be the worst trip ever! He probably means he barely slept during those 5 days! Psychosis can occur after 3 or even 2 days. I just can't see not sleeping for that length of time and then going out and performing at madison square garden.... with led zeppelin.... for a film and a soundtrack??!!
That no quarter solo from the 1976 release really puzzled me when i first heard it as i had first heard the 2007 cut version and loved it I didnt know really what to make of the full solo, i liked it but it made the rest of it feel unfamiliar Then one evening a few years later my mates and i were enjoying a few grams of magic mushrooms and i queued up the 1976 version of no quarter We were smoking and we had some fairy lights strewn about That solo made me feel like i really knew jimmy on a deep level Funny thing abiut music
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when the 2007 remaster didn't include the same Celebration Day guitar solo as the 1976 original release. Not that it's bad, but I think it's better.
The "light and shade" picture of Page spreading his legs and holding up the Les Paul looks like 75 due to the length of Pages hair and the faint outline of Bonzos drum riser?
After further review. Looks like Page is wearing the necklace that is thick and jewelry style. That necklace was only worn a few times during the 75 tour.
I remember at the time Plant and Page haggling over vocal edits, Plant pretty much wanted all of his ad libs including "Does anyone remember laughter?" from Stairway. Page adamantly refused but did agree to a few "Push,Push,Push and a few others to be edited out.
To this day, Robert hasn't explained what PUSH means, where did it come from! hahah. I had a classmate in highschool that one day at a music jam session started to moan...out of NOWHERE. We all looked at him like WTF. Then we found out he heard his folks have xxx on a weekly basis and that kinda traumatized him! lol
uz preslo 50rokov od iconickych vystupeni v madison square garden, rok 1973 bol pre led zeppelin velmi uspesnim rokom.v tom roku boli vyhlaseny za najlepsiu rockovu skupinu na svete.
Good Times.
Awesome work 🤘🤘🤘 we appreciate you the hours that goes into these episodes
Dude, your outtro epilogue gave me chills. Hardcore Zeppelin fan I am indeed, reporting for duty
Glad it did, i wrote this to the sound of Stairway live....so much meaning in these shows right? We are lucky to have discovered the greatest band of the 70s!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-StoriesNow I had to listen again. Masterful
Absolutely freakin phenomenal work on this Jose. Brilliant work - TY. Ernie
Thanks so much Ernie, now it's time to listen to the album in its entirety!
You're very welcome Bryan!
Another outstanding documentary, my friend! Thank you so very much!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank YOU for watching!
i like the bootleg ... its like being at the show .... thanks JCM !!! . ... they should release every bit of filmed footage.....
Where can i find the bootleg? What day was it from?
Just started this episode going to love it. You know I think Bonham is saying “okay let’s go” instead of “alright.” 😂 His heavy heavy accent. I could be wrong. And BTW that is an incredible sequence - they come charging out and the energy and confidence on stage and in the audience is so high!
The energy in that building was incredible....what a time and space!

Again... Great Job!!! I discovered the webpage The Graden Tapes years ago. Amazing work from Edwards. Again thank you.
Edwards is INSANE, what a thesis !!!! Thanks for watching!
In the 80's I hooked my cassette deck up to my VHS player and recorded the audio of the movie, played the cassette in my car for years.

My very first concert, memorialised forever. Little did I know that when I later saw and heard TSRTS that I was getting parts of the 28th and 29th as well🤫. Great job as always; LMAO at the Gerber bit.
I have the 1976 vinyl, 1987 CD, 2007 CD & 4LP Box Set.
Celebration Day is on the original release
@@Argonautica8 Right. Celebration Day was on the original LP soundtrack, but not in the movie. Sorry for the confusion 😃
Glad you shouted out The Garden Tapes. I remember discovering the site around 2001!
Great work with this series (and channel) JCM!
Eddie Edwards deserves so much praise, i hope i get to meet him one day Peter. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for the next episode!
Jose, well done on this phenomenal project. Your commitment and attention to detail are second to none, thank you for all your work!
Many thanks! Now it's time to listen to the album and watch the movie in full to know where everything comes from hehe!
This is phenomenal, its greatness, quality and power is admirable I loved what a great story Led Zeppelin forever. Thank you.🎸😍😍
Thank YOU for watching!
Thank you. Seriously. Thank you. This installment of the documentary solidifies my view: Jimmy is, without question and unequivocally, the GOAT
He is and this rubs many classic rock fans the wrong way, people just have to accept it lol. Glad we do!
Love the content brother..keep going..don’t stop..it’s very interesting…💥✌️🙏☘️☘️✅
I'm gonna keep on rockin' , but first coffee! Thanks for watching!
@@Artist1974CH Agree about the Elvis sound. I loved that vibe. I also loved what he eventually got to around the time of ITTOD and the 79 shows.
Yes, the Half Wah Wah sound, it's killer. I found about this by accident while playing! Thanks for watching Louis!
Another great episode JCM! Jimmy needs to release all 3 shows in full! One of my holy grails.
All 3 shows, THE ULTIMATE GARDEN! Thanks for watching!
It does look 1975 but Page is wearing that black shirt, really confuses me haha. Thank YOU Paradox for watching!
Amazing! Thank you!
Hi Jose,
I remember buying a special issue of the British magazine *Q* at a Barnes & Noble bookstore at one of my local shopping malls in the early 2000s.
A 1000 jam gig, that's awesome. Best of luck brother! I still think it's Alright Let's Go hehehe. Thanks for watching!
Love the mashups at the beginning. Would love a recording of just those.
The extras on the double disc DVD release are Criterion-worthy.
Another Great Job Jose-Much Thanx Man !!!
Thank you Ian!
Great amount of details!!! Fascinating as always!! Keep rocking JCM
Thank you my fellow ZEPPHEAD!
Great series of the best live album by the best band. They were at their peek. Jimmy owned every other rock guitarist those nights. Everything was magic. Thanks for your excellent work.
Thank you very much for watching! Jimmy owned them all in 1973, agree!
Wow. Live chat over ? Great vid
Another phenomenonal series of videos. Thank you so much.
Thanks for watching John! Getting ready for the new destination!
Celebration day is so grooving cool. Im always trying to cop the bass line exactly.
Listening to this one really brings back my teenage years as Led Zeppelin was my gateway to so... much great music from the 70s and some 60s music as well.
The three amigos in a 1980 GMC van with smoke and a cassette deck that never had a break.
Three amigos in 1980, wow, that sounds like a fun trip. Wish my buddies listened to this album when i was in college, nobody listened to Zepp lol!
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories The van was a 1980 GMC, but the year was 1983 in grade 9. Nevertheless, it was a great time listening to 70s classics, and the 80s music was just beginning. Our fave was In though the out Door on cassette.
Hell yeah ITTOD rocks. I have 59 copies of the album as of today lol
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories cheers 🍻 👏. Keep the music alive, my friend.
I did the same but with a guitar
@@sweetlou2597 That's great but dazed and confused live on this would have been hard note for note.
Thanks for tuning in William! Like you i am on the hunt for that Argentinian pressing, it's pricey!
29th end solo on cd is beyond contemporary/subsequent guitar heroes of era, pure musicality-

Hope you enjoy the rest of the stuff here :)
wow, thank you for reminding me about what got cut in the remastered edition. the solo from "no quarter" gone? BOO!!!!
Yeah what a cut right!!
Here you have a version of No Quarter which I made of the different nights:
ua-cam.com/video/tFZy4ot2O2g/v-deo.html
I heard, that for LZ to get permission to release and remaster the songs for the 2007 release, that the filmmaker or someone, requires that the music on the CD, match the music in the movie.
At least us fans finally got the music on CD that we deserved to have in 1976...
SIBLY
OTHAFA
HB
etc
Yes, I have heard that too, but again, they didn t do that with The Rain Song, in the movie there is a cut in the beginning of the rock part
ANyone else notice the question asked to the Train conductor before No Quarter? It's gone completely on the latest Blue Ray, but it's still audible on the 99 DVD. I miss that, and I don't get why they do stuff like that.
GREAT JOB! AWESOME RESEARCH!
Glad you enjoyed it Steve! Stay tuned for the Patreon only video coming up!
YES!!! You Mentioned: 'My Concert': 06 Feb, 1975!!!
We can battle A.I as long as we keep humanity communicating to each other!
You got it man! Thank YOU for watching. It's been crazy here at the studio!
Great work as always. I especially enjoyed the audio comparisons - fascinating.
Thank you very much!
I was at Live Aid, Jose....so I will never forget it, for all its flaws! Ernie
You're very welcome! Jimmy was in high spirits in 1988 for sure!

Thanks brother
Any time Rob, Thank you for watching!
well done.
This is why average cover bands are terrified of playing Zeppelin material. Page was a GENIUS!
Did you see the Detroit 75 footage?
Yes i did! Definitely matches the vibe from the photograph. Why am i seeing a shirt on Jimmy? Lol
The greatest rock band ever to walk the earth.
DAMN RIGHT! Thanks for watching!
Stumbled across the Garden Tapes years ago
Insane detail, Page would overdub like one or two notes or just a short phrase here or there, probably covering bum notes
Great work
Eddie Edwards deserves to be in the album's credits hehe. Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Thank you Arthur! This will get me an espresso today!
Great job man!
Thanks for the visit! Led Zeppelin was at the top of their game in 1973!
The 2007 vinyl, over 2 sides,
is 27:54 combined....
19:57 & 8:57 added together.
Guess i screwed up my research :) Thanks for watching man!
Back in the late seventies I rented The song remains the same on betamax and I had two machines so I transferred it over to VHS. The version you see now is different from the original version that came out in slightly different ways.
I bet it's been altered throughout time, wish i could get a scan from a betamax copy. Thanks for watching!
What i really wish they would do is do the original '76 release in the 2007/2018 sound.
Agreed! Thing is, copyright wise, the new remasters add in to the catalogue, meaning, not compete with the first time around as new copyright can only happen if the new release is different.
My song remains the same vhs tape looked much different.
There's several versions, all of them with cool looking covers. Thank you very much for tuning in!
That no quarter solo from the 1976 release really puzzled me when i first heard it as i had first heard the 2007 cut version and loved it
I didnt know really what to make of the full solo, i liked it but it made the rest of it feel unfamiliar
Then one evening a few years later my mates and i were enjoying a few grams of magic mushrooms and i queued up the 1976 version of no quarter
We were smoking and we had some fairy lights strewn about
That solo made me feel like i really knew jimmy on a deep level
Funny thing abiut music
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when the 2007 remaster didn't include the same Celebration Day guitar solo as the 1976 original release. Not that it's bad, but I think it's better.
The reason he cut the solo is no one believed it could be that good, so must have been over dubbed. It is the performance of a God.
Maybe he wanted to take revenge at bootleggers haha!
26:22 original mic drop that set the precedent for all to come.
Absolutely Matt! Thanks for watching!
The "light and shade" picture of Page spreading his legs and holding up the Les Paul looks like 75 due to the length of Pages hair and the faint outline of Bonzos drum riser?
His hair was longer at shepperton studios. If you pay close attention to a few quick cuts in the film you can notice a difference between the length.
After further review. Looks like Page is wearing the necklace that is thick and jewelry style. That necklace was only worn a few times during the 75 tour.
“No Quarter” should have been issued as a companion disc single with no edits. The price? Yep, you guessed it: a quarter. . . 25 cents.
Then we found out he heard his folks have xxx on a weekly basis and that kinda traumatized him! lol
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I think you can figure out what " Push" means🤣🤣
Even though Push is self-explanatory it does not make sense from Robert's POV you know? He is the one pushing hahahahah
