    First thing why the six inch box. You only need a 10in and a 12in. And why is he wiping the mud off after he put it on? Your hand it's not near as steady as that box.

  • @alexgostevskyh289
    @alexgostevskyh289 5 років тому +3

    As a professional drywaller I use the 10in fatboy box to run the joints and the 12in to get the butt joints on the first coat. And if you use a 10in box u want to make the joints hollow so when you do skim the next coat with the 12in box in comes out super flat. You applying it and wiping afterwards. Your waiting time and money. That's why we have things called sanders!

  • @Bandit-10-4
    @Bandit-10-4 5 років тому +5

    The boxes are designed to be a finishing tool you shouldn't have to run over your joint with a knife and take the crown out of it so that you end up with pin holes in your topping because you're filling with topping instead of skim coating

      Im the only guy i know where i am who wipes behind box (only my twelve box tho) but it absolutely produces a better product, on 8 or 10 i agree, but i go 10 no wipe 12 wipe, and it looks amazing, its just like chasing with the box but i find it faster to wipe and it looks better personally

    He shouldn't have to wipe it down with knife afterward should he?....whole point of using a box is to tape it right and in one pass I thought....his box leaves alot excess mud over side

    • @Maxkil
      @Maxkil  6 років тому +9

      Just gets rid of any air bubbles and flattens it right out. I think it's good to do. I see many people don't think it's needed, but you can see looking down the joint while it's being done how much better it makes it. It also feathers the joint when you change direction. Sometimes you get some debris it you have to run along next to a cut out and can cause it to scratch, wiping after solves all of those woes...

    • @booey539
      @booey539 5 років тому +1

      Do you think air bubbles will show on the finish coat if you don't blade off the second coat? Where you from Adelaide? Adjust your box so it is flat! The composition of base coat is heavier than topcoat, thats why you have to wipe the shit runs around the shits to thick! starts to set... Theres no happy medium.. @@Maxkil

    There's really no need to wipe the flat at all, just clean up your stopping points, you're wiping too much compound out of the recess. Leave in there, that way when you put the final skin coat on you are skimming.. not filling. Very clean work however!

    That’s a good box for no coat off set angles wouldn’t use it for flats though. A typical bevel is just over 2” and that box is 5.5” he has super accurate to fill the bevel properly. Not quite enough mud and he wipes it down to leave even less mud 🤷🏻‍♂️. I don’t get it

  • @wiseacre448
    @wiseacre448 Рік тому

    I can only speak for my tapetech. I use a 7 and a 10. I fill flat with my 7, check with a new knife. If any mud on the knife it’s too much. Use my 10 next and check. When it’s dry it’s flat and smooth, what more is there to say/do? Ready for texture or sanding. My little tip is I run about 400 sheets on the blade and then flip it over and it’s another new blade. Blades don’t perform well it seems after 400 sheets.

    How wide is that box? We usually do our fill coat with a 10" box. Does that get it flat enough? I agree with chasing the box work with a broad knife to fill in the gap along the angles . Gets rid of tape photographing and most lap marks too.

    After you skim over the joints using the box tool what do you do with the rest of the board and reveals? Do you skim the board where it's not close to a joint or a reveal? In UK they tend to skim the entire wall with a brown/red type of plaster.

    • @Maxkil
      @Maxkil  Рік тому

      you just leave it, in Australia only for a level 5 finish you would skim the entire wall. Its needs a good sealer undercoat rolled onto it to blend as well. I get them perfect after paint, but the painter plays a big part in the finish of the drywall. Yeah in the UK some of the thick plaster on walls looks like a complete mess but its a different climate here in Australia.. Hey Martin you should subscribe!
