This reminds me of the good ole days, when i used to hang and finish... the only this different is i used pan and knives, but i actually think this is faster.... i also had the bazooka and boxes, its odd that i didnt use hawk and trowel for finishing drywall because i could plaster too....now i just watch videos of the the work at 71 yrs of age....good job guys.
Nothing in the world like getting a full spread with a hawk n trowel countless generations have used those tools something about that is what makes a true plasterer love what he does
I love these videos. I appreciate the videos when other guys walk you through the process, but it is amazing to see a well-oiled machine on the job, at a construction site. When you get some skill mudding, you think, “Hey, I’m pretty good.” After watching these guys, “Uh, no I’m not.”
I work with drywall in Brazil, and what I have more difficulty is the treatment of joints, I smooth the mass and never look good in a coat, you are really fast and amazing, the finish is perfect! I need to learn more from you!
Interesting how you use your forehand to apply from the bottom. I've always used backhand. Been taping 25 years and I can tell you guys are very good with the tools!
Really need to get a hawk and trowel and spend the time getting used to it. I do just fine with my pan and knives but it seems you can really put a lot of mud on in a hurry and more efficiently with a hawk and trowel. Always wanted to try them out but after watching your video I'm definitely going and getting a set tomorrow. Thanks for the push guys. Just added something for me to be excited about again at work. After 25 years of using a pan and knives I'm making a switch. That's exciting to me. Guess I'm not switching. Just going to run bead, butt joints and flats with it. Wait till I'm better before trying to skim any walls out with it but that's what I'm most excited about using it for. Getting rid of the roller setup for skimming. Anyways again, thanks for the push. I get too excited sometimes. Lol!
Did you try it? I have been using knife and pan for about a year, and I finally made the switch to hawk and trowel. It was a mess. It is a lot more difficult than these guys make it look. On the rare occasion I get a good run, I do like the “bulldoze” effect of the trowel over the knife. But I lost patience and converted to a knife and hawk. I’ll keep practicing.
Finally a guy on YT wit some serious skills. Check how he hasnt drop.a single plaster on the floor. His wrist is so.flexible...damnnn thats what I call a professionalist
Thanks for sharing this video, I hope I become as good as you guys some day, I’ve been doing drywall for 6 months now an these videos help me a lot thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills.

I use Hawk Trowel and broadknives. Tried a pan once, a merican let me try , was ok but I will stick with Hawke, Hard to break 27 year habit. Good to see the workcover approved milk crates still around!
What’s crazy is I’ve never used hawk on bead but love it on the ceiling. I believe this old dog needs to up his game. They have given me something to learn. Wrist gets very sore these days coating usually use box on bead but Cat man was definitely on his game. Hawk doesn’t keep up with big boy boxes but it’s definitely lighter using hawk and trowel it’s definitely better on ceilings with hardly any end blade spills. If you’re open to learning to be efficient I would say you can always learn something new.
Im a very old plasterer. This guy is pretty handy with a hawk and trowel. But no doubt he is showing off a bit for the camera. lol Anyway a good finisher could no doubt show off as well by using a traditional blade type tool.
Holding it that way, in my own experience at least, feels more stable and consistent. Nowhere near that level but still, it made sense to me seeing you holding it that way.
Much respect! I would love to see the consistency of mud you guys use before you start these videos. Would be nice to know how the mud should look consistency wise for every step of the process you guys make videos on! Definitely my favorite mudding how to channel!
5:46 I'm a Union Drywall finisher in Kansas City, that looks extremely good, I don't know why we don't use Hawk and Trowels. Really don't think the best Finisher I know could finish that doorway as fast as him with a pan and knife.
I could never understand why use a pan instead of a hawk. But there was one reason I heard. That sometimes when the mud consistency after running a taper for example is so wet that it will fall off the trowel too easy.
Maxkil that makes sense actually that’s a good point ...... sometimes on a bad day my nickname is “magpie” cause I drop shit everywhere if put to much on the hawk while taping 😂
Great drywall work but does Australia not have any building code for air seal or insulation? 8:04 no sealing around bottom of window or pipe penetration. Not to mention the drywall gap while a time saver for the drywall hangers and finishers is a huge issue for building a tight house.
taylor vooght not for stand alone houses. If it is a dwelling connected directly to other properties then yes a partition wall has to be installed between the properties and fire and sound insulation on top fire and sound board and has to be installed with fire resistant silicone used behind the skirting and has to be boarded to the ceiling tight and taped tight. But in standard house just lightweight board is used which has no fire rating different climates require different codes. This house was yet to be wrapped and bricked/boarded on the outside hence why you can see light coming through those gaps. it gets sealed from the outside. Cornice is being used hence why there's a gap between the wall and ceiling because a plasterboard cove cornice gets installed over the top. Hope that helps clarify how must residential homes are done in Queensland. If the house needs to be fire rated then there's also no use of glue as you can see the limited screws on the walls is because stud adhesive is the code here unless it's in a water resistant or fire resistant part of the house. or if the walls are being filed completely then only fasteners are used for the those walls and no glue.
It is because they are going to put up cornice. There is no need for the wall and ceiling to join together perfect when it will be covered with 90mm cornice.
