The first time I saw this episode, I thought the song was dubbed. But nope, that was 100% Katherine Jenkins singing. God, she has such a gorgeous voice.
She practically dubbed herself on-screen, but she's an accomplished soprano singer, and it's her singing the song. She's really great, live as well. Every time I watch this episode, I'm mesmerised by the song and how well it suits the atmosphere of the episode's conclusion. They seem to have combined at least two separate recordings (or edits) of it, so that it would better fit in with the visuals and timings.
I remember watching Doctor Who Confidential and she said that she made sure she was actually singing the song as she said she felt it was more authentic than traditional lip syncing as you get all the facial movements that you would have if you were singing live!
Rest In peace to the legendary SIR Micheal gambon this episode was phenomenal and his character was great and I highly doubt a doctor who Christmas episode will be as special and impactful as this one
So beautiful, for so many reasons. Abigail's voice is lovely and moving. And not only did the Doctor save the crew on the ship, but as Abigail sang, she placed her hand on Kazran's cheek, which is a gentle and loving contast to the sharp pang of a slap from his father. And while he remembered another life where he was called "heartless": with Abigail, he hears a loving woman sing to him "when you are here, music is all around".
"Then, go on Doctor. Go on. Show me the future.." "I AM showing you the future"... still get chills at this episode. Never thought A Christmas Carol would work in a show like Doctor who. Thanks for uploading.
Abigail’s song is such a beautiful song to listen to! Katherine Jenkins was a perfect fit for the role of Abigail too! Her voice was absolutely magical in this moment!
When you're alone, silence is all you see When you're alone, silence is all you'll be Give me your hand and come to me When you are here, music is all around When you are near, music is all around Open your eyes, don't make a sound Let in the shadow, let in the shadow Let in the light of your bright shadow Let in the shadow, let in the shadow Let in the light of your bright shadow Merry Christmas, one and all 🎄
One of the best episodes ever. To me, it's a huge homage to human mythology and archetypes. I get emotional from this episode every time. It's ripe with so much existential and spiritual meaning.
Probably for the same reason I have issues with the whole Matt Smith era (nothing against Matt Smith himself, he's amazing.) The time travel logic just gets convoluted to the point where it makes no sense, even in the context of the episode. It's a problem with all the Doctor Who I've seen, but especially prevalent in Matt Smith's seasons. The time travel logic is just never consistent, and everything is explained away because "timey wimey." I still loved Matt Smith's seasons though, and this episode is good, just confusing.
The Doctor rewrote Casaran's past, stealing his actual past from him. He traumatized Casaran's younger self to inflict a moment of self-realization on his older self, basically putting a child in harm's way (he had no way of knowing Casaran would stop before actually striking his younger self). I can absolutely understand why people might not like this episode: it shows the Doctor essentially toying with a being who has no way to fight back against him, and shows how terrifying a time traveler can be if he decides you're someone to whom he needs to teach a lesson. It turns out with a sort of bittersweet happy ending, but it shows a potentially dark and horrifying aspect of the Doctor.
@@woodrobin Your point of Kazran not hitting the boy is baseless, it showed earlier in the episode he was traumatized by his father hitting him. The Doctor noticed this and knew he wouldn't inflict the same pain. I don't believe the doctor was putting him in harms way and knew what he was doing.
How amazing is Michael Gambon’s acting in this scene? All the confusion, pain and hope etched on to his face while never saying a word. Perfect. And the song always makes me cry a bit.
@@EternalPayne I preferred RTD all around, but some of Moffat's individual episodes were fantastic, even if his best were during the RTD era (Empty Child two parter, Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, and Silence in the Library two parter). Besides, Moffat and RTD are both fantastic in comparison to Chibnall.
Watching this again after hearing of the sad passing of the wonderful Michael Gambon. I remember he talked about how moved he was by listening to Katherine Jenkins singing live ❤
This to me makes me feel Doctor Who. It doesn’t matter whether its season 1 or season 11, there’s always magic that you can’t quite understand, kinda like the song. I’m not as bothered that there is no Christmas special, as the New Years special is a day after my birthday.
The BBC has been putting out a number of these clips recently. The truly sad thing is that there isn’t a single moment from the entire Season 11 that could hold a candle to any of them. What a shame.
I read somewhere that Katherine Jenkins didn't want to record the song in a sound-booth. The cleared out all but essential cast members and camera operators, and she sang it live on the set. The results are beautiful. I cry every time.
Watched this episode on Christmas day for the first time since it aired in 2010 and it felt completely new again. This moment made me cry, such a beautiful Christmas special.
In my 20's my father lost his battle with cancer in 2012. I can never watch this episode without crying. Sometimes it takes events to happen in your life before you understand the real meaning and beauty in things.
The idea of snow at Christmas comes from Dickens's novels, because his early life was during the end of an era in England's climate known as the Little Ice Age.❄️
When you're alone, silence is all you'll know. When you're alone, silence is all you'll know. Let in the noise and let it grow. When you're alone, silence is all you see. When you're alone, silence is all you'll be Give me your hand and come to me. When you are here, music is all around. When you are near, music is all around. Open your eyes, don't make a sound. One of my favorite Christmas episodes of Dr Who and also holds my favorite quote about Christmas. "People get together to celebrate being....Half way out of the dark."
This is by and far my favourite Christmas special for the Doctor and definitely 1 of my top 5 all-time favourite episodes of the new series - This song brings a tear to my eye every time I watch/listen to it
I was 10 at my grandmother's house when I saw this, and thus began my Dr Who obsession - now 11 years later I can still see the beauty clear as crystal

Abigail's song is truly beautiful and so breathtaking, even as it resonates with the atmosphere!
so true
