I still have my one which was bought from whsmiths in staines. I found it in the cupboard again today and it works a treat. It must be about 40 years old.
had this game as a kid.it has a glitch if you shoot the ufo on the far right and keep shooting it doesnt move .after score 99 it starts putting up codes in the score box
Stumbled upon this video and boy what childhood memories it brought back - especially in the intro when you pan in to the toy cars. There is a small dune-buggy looking one at the 5 second mark that has a red and blue trim. Had the identical one as a kid and would love to find one like it again. If you could tell me any details about it, that would be awesome!
They're Mattel Zowees, given away free in sets of 4 by BP garages in the UK in 1972. The only place I know of where you can get them is ebay. Prices vary wildly depending on condition, but they aren't ultra rare, so you should be able to find them.
I had a whole slew of portable LED games when I was a kid. Yeah, they were simple, but I loved playing them. If I couldn't have an arcade machine, that was the closest thing I could have. Although, you can imagine how I almost fell out of my chair when I discovered MAME.
+BlackburnBigdragon I had a couple of LED games, and then got an Atari, and that was me done with handhelds until theGBA. My first mame experience was on the Amiga, but when mame became possible on handhelds... oh boy :D
Believe it or not, I started collecting handheld game emulators. I have emulations for so many of the old LED handheld games. It's not the same thing but I can play them. I used to have the old Tomy "Tron". It was my favorite. It was the first handheld that had multiple screens. I was actually able to play "Tron" again (Of course my father sold my at a tag sale LONG ago). If you can ever get your hands on Tomy Tron. Get it! It's worth it.
Have you found the cheat on this game? When I was young I used to play this under the bed sheets. Try to aim for the mother ship in the corner and keep pressing the fire button for maximum score as it keeps spawning in the same place.
+Steve Benway (Retro Gaming Collector) Not this one, but over electronic games in general...so many hours...so much fun...so very simple...aw no I'm gonna cry now...
When I saw the thumbnail I said to myself, I had one of those, but I think I am thinking of the same one you were i.e. it had more aliens on the screen. I think the case was slightly different too. More than likely there must have been a later version.
I had this one when i was a kid. No sure where it went, but I really liked this one (a lot more than Nintendo's Game & Watch or the stuff Mattel made earlier). 8 quid seems somewhat expensive, but might be worth if, if you have some nostalgic memory of it (like I do) and it certainly beats every Tiger handheld.
+Frank Schneider There are actually some decent Tiger handhelds like Mega Man 3 or Pinball. I'll admit, you can't play any in the dark and the ear-shocking sound is much less than those VFD games, but they were great before the Game Boy or gave you a false sense of satiety when you didn't own or couldn't own their big brother counterparts.
there's a glitch in it if you shoot the UFO in the right hand corner most of the time it will stay there and you will be able to shoot at it with ease I did the glitch and got 125 points
It is a bit poor for what the game is. Surely they could have put the entire row on there of the invaders. They probably run out of LED's to make the rest of the line up it's so lazy but if it's later 70s - very earlier 80s I forgive it I guess.
+Daniel Cordell Early LED games like this were all quite limited to begin with. It was only later that they became more impressive. I dno't know if there are any videos of the Battlestar Galactica handheld on UA-cam, but that was pitifully basic.
+Steve Benway (Retro Gaming Collector) lol. Yes. I got it for Christmas one year. That was good Christmas though. After we had opened everything, my parents dragged out a big box containing an Atari 2600. The Bandai didn't get a look in.

Amazing how far along things have come since the 80s.

This is a whole site full of handheld remakes.

I played the crap out of this game...my mom bought it for me from the Sears Roebuck catalog...thanks for the memories.
Like this game, even I like the Entex Space Invader a bit more. Having Space Invaders always with you was a great thing back then.
+VectrexRoli I was watching your Entex Space Invader video just an hour or so ago. It's definitely a better game :)

+RaspCast I'd heard there was a cheat, but hadn't yet bothered to find out what it was. I'll have to try that :)
Sounds like the batteries are low. The sound pitch lowers when you have low batteries.
My inner child is going mental right now
+GameplayJenny You had one of these?
+Steve Benway (Retro Gaming Collector) Not this one, but over electronic games in general...so many hours...so much fun...so very simple...aw no I'm gonna cry now...
Wish I Still Had Mine,
1980 was a Cool Year ...
When I saw the thumbnail I said to myself, I had one of those, but I think I am thinking of the same one you were i.e. it had more aliens on the screen. I think the case was slightly different too. More than likely there must have been a later version.
Do you still have Astro Wars? That's probably my favorite.
+9ElevenGamer Sadly not. It died many years ago.
I still have my one of these from my childhood and it still works!
When you get past 99, the score goes a bit mental ;-)
That machine really needs a cleaning.

I had one!
This is cute, and I like this, a lot! I should look and see if I can get one'a these, sometime…
its like astro wars but only one colour.
+aly nicholls Similar in some ways, but a lot more limited in terms of gameplay and "graphics"
Arse-tro Wars!
+Mat Howlett lol! :D

Thanks for the tip. You learn something every day :)
+Steve Benway (Retro Gaming Collector) it might be left :-)

Here's how to do the glitch: ua-cam.com/video/UaxCNLT5imc/v-deo.html
Wow. I actually had one of those back in the 80s.
It was a pile of crap :)
+Banshun Hehehe. Now don't mice your words. Say what you *really* mean ;)
Yeah... it's not great.
+Steve Benway (Retro Gaming Collector) lol. Yes. I got it for Christmas one year. That was good Christmas though. After we had opened everything, my parents dragged out a big box containing an Atari 2600. The Bandai didn't get a look in.
Oh hell yeah. Sod little handhelds when you've got an Atari :D
