Extending the Life of an Old Roof without Replacing it (2024)

- I needed to prolong the life of the timbers in the roof, so l installed new timbers from the inside. No funds to replace the roof, a cheap solution that might give me a few extra years.

Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening, and more! Hit subscribe if you would like to keep up with my journey, and hit the notification bell to be alerted when we go LIVE where we have a first viewing of the video as it is published with a live chat so I can answer all your questions! See you in Sean's World.
For what it’s worth, I think you should just feel free to mix up the length of your videos but try to keep to a fairly regular routine when possible. Then you can do what works best for you depending on what you are doing and how much time you have. I think most of your regular audience appreciate the work that goes into creating content and just enjoy being able to be with you along the journey 🙂.
I generally enjoy 15-25 minutes. Just because of the time I have to watch. But I generally watch all of them. So whatever works for you. Have a great day!
Please Sean, do what is best for you and best, safe, and sensible in restoring the cottage. Those of us who have followed you for years know you are more than capable and knowledgeable about the issues you face. Every vlog is worth watching!!
20 min is my sweet spot, but I'll watch them however long you make them.
It's just good to see you whenever you publish. Do what works for you.
20 minutes is just great but your projects are worth the following !! Can’t wait to see the future progress of this cottage !!
I don’t think you should worry too much about the length - do what makes sense for the content you’re filming that day. I always like the variety of the projects you do, the gardening, the cottage, the patios. It keeps it interesting. I also really appreciate your other channel with the trips to the old chateaus and other adventures. Always nice to see Sam and her mum coming back from the vid greniers with their treasures.
What is easier for you. After all you are doing all the work. We are sitting back and enjoying, watching.
First to congratulate Sean on educating and entertaining through his photography and editing about restoring an very old structure in France. Thank you😊
Sean, the cottage is going to be beautiful when you finely finish.
An afternoon with Sean always uplifts my spirits
I'll keep watching however long you make them!
Sean, whatever floats your boat is fine with me concerning the length of your videos. The upstairs looks so bright and inviting. The pitter patter of rain hitting the roof will help the occupants fall asleep. The cottage is evolving as you dedicate your focus to each new challenging problem, which you conquer every time. Face it, YOU ARE THE BEST!!!! Hello from Yakima, Washington, USA.
I really like 15 to 20 minute videos but Sean whatever is best for you. I never miss one.
Thanks 👌
Any legnth of videos that you choose is fine with me. The roof is looking really good.
Short & sweet. Keeps 'em wanting for more. Good luck . 😀
I seem to prefer approximately 15-20 minute videos but I just schedule when I watch the longer ones so it doesn't matter to me. I think it's more important that you do what fits the projects you are doing. It's worth watching no matter how long or short it is!
I'll watch your videos no matter, long or short! 😃
Sean I look forward to your videos everyday but in the long run it is up to you and what you feel is best
What a difference it makes to the light upstairs there with those skylight in, so much natural light.
John you keep pumping out those videos and we will keep watching however long they are. I myself thoroughly enjoy watching him and Sam. God bless and stay safe🙏🏻🙏🏻
It's impressive how much light is reflected by that foil wrap.
I like your videos any length any time Sean. Keep up the good work.
Sean, I love to watch you. Such an interesting video today. You're A total wealth of information.
I'm up for any way you want to do the frequency of the posts.
Cheers
It’s good to see how you make do. Thanks for sharing 😊
20 minutes is great Sean we just love watching your videos.
You did a mighty fine job being solo, Sean! Los of interesting information and tips for those doing such work. Whatever video times work for you, Sean. I enjoy watching whenever and wherever you film! Love from Pennsylvania, USA 💕🌷🐻
Sean, have you considered adding a dormer to accommodate headroom at the top of the staircase and giving you more options to solve the issue?
Sean I like about 30mins and enjoy seeing you every 2nd day with Sean’s Universe.
I like it when you get stuck into a project and we can watch begining to end.
Can’t help with the insulation I’m afraid.
I like a shorter video, but will watch what ever you decide to give us!
Great V-Log,and good to see things moving along in the cottage.
Love to see. So happy when you are on. Good work. You do what is good for your back and the temperature. ❤
Super progress! Everything looks great! Thanks for sharing! 🎉❤😊
Sean good to see you upstairs again i watch you guys when ever
I'm a fan of do what you like. Longer with less frequency means we see more progress at a time. Shorter but more often helps fit viewing into our schedules. Sooo, do what you like.
As other's have said - just mix it up Sean - if and when you feel like it. Do not feel pressured or lose yourself in making these videos ❤
Up stairs is looking Great! Well done
I will watch whatever length you put out. I suppose it depends on what you are doing, or if you can split it up into convenient lengths. Happy to watch anything Sean.
Hello mr.Sean .It is such a pleasure watching your vlog's.
Good job! Keep up the good work and the great videos!
Great information
Love the comment about being resourceful. That is where we are now in fixing our house. Lumber is sky high again in Kansas usa. We are using the lumber of an old grainben my husband tore down. Hope you get along well
It looks nice and bright upstairs. You have done a great job! Its great how well you've improved the cottage . I like all the videos you've had. Maybe if you have them more often more people would tune in.
Excellent episode! ❤😊🎉👍🥰
Having insulated and drywalled my (previously uninsulated) two-car garage with RockWool, I would highly recommend it, as it's easy to cut and work with and doesn't itch. It also has a very high fire rating, which, in such an old wooden structure may be a valuable asset to have in the next hundred years of the barn's life. Whatever you decide on, I'm sure it's going to turn out great!
I have been impressed by the expanding foam insulation. It has soundproofing qualities and it keeps the heat or cool inside the house like a Yeti cooler. My friend put up a huge metal pole barn here in hot hot Texas, I couldn’t believe how comfortable her house was with no HVAC in summer. They call pole barn houses barnduminiums here.
A 10 minute video a day would be perfect, but do what you think is right. We'll still watch it ! LOL Thanks for sharing. 👍👍
however long you want to film for is fine for me. I will watch them all when I get the chance to do so. Somedays I will binge watch and others just a quickie. lol Have a great day
However long…. However frequent…. We watch it all!
Wherever is the most practical/achievable for you Sean
Thanks Sean great video!! 🎉
Great progress❤
Hi Sean 👋 Love to watch and learn from you ❤. I am adding extra insulation 1" board against my skirting. I'm going to hook it to pressure treated 2x4s to block out the winter winds here in Pennsylvania. And yes, I know that it has to breathe it won't be completely sealed, but it will cut down on the cold wind whipping through the holes in every section of the skirting. I am going to leave cross ventilation on all four sides. Perhaps next year, I'll add 2"" 2x8 foot sections to the last 3 feet by the I beams. Nothing will ever be completely sealed but should make it warmer. Love the fact that you give me some inspiration. It took me a long while to measure and then cut the boards in 2x8 sections. I have never done anything like this, but at least I am trying. It's only 1" foam boards with an r rating of 5. They cost me 30.00 US dollars a sheet. Plus 28, pressure treated 2x4x8's, rebar, and some type of push pin adapters. It is very slow going, but it's getting ready to be put in place. I just wanted to thank you for your inspiration.
I like your longer videos and more often. But that's just me.
Say hi to Sam, take care of yourself. Love and Light to All from Pennsylvania ❤✨️🙌🏼
Good luck
@@Seans_World thank you, Sean
I’ll watch whatever you post.
Lovely how you always 'err' towards preserving. Preserving wonderful character. More short-themed videos so you can concentrate on certain skills.
Sean, I'd say that the shorter/more frequent videos would be preferable to the longer ones. But I'm such a devoted fan that I will watch whatever you post!
Perfect timing and for hitting the like button at 1k
Do what you need to do so it does what you need to do. It's your choice.
Oh Sean that is such a good feeling …the wall work was slow true…but bingo what a positive feeling when your goal is reached!…I always enjoyed the roof and ceiling challenges…
Sean, I would say keep your regular schedule of Sean's World videos twice a week but the length is up to you, from 15 minutes up to 30, you can always add some extra footage of your cat family if there's not enough reno work!
Sean, I have a very similar project in Correze. You give me the heart to continue. Thank you!
I prefer a shorter video of 10-20 mins which means I am more likely to watch, purely due to lack of time. Maybe around 15 mins is a happy medium. xx
From 10 cm or more of snow to freezing rain and even thunder storms. Canadian winters are, if nothing else, unpredictable. We use R22 rock wool for heat retention but also squirrels and mice don't seem to like it much. They would love wool and we don't want them in our walls.
Great progress Mate!
It sure is looking good up there, Sean❤!
15 to 20mins with more regularity works for me the long ones are a bit much imo. Thanks for all the hard work you do.
single, 65 year old woman here and that is what i'm doing to my almost 100 year old home "just prolonging it's life span". the "experts" i've hired since i bought this house 11 years ago have all failed me and this house. i'm now doing the work myself. thanks to you sean, and a couple other channels, i'm succeeding. just "go slow". in a perfect world, more in depth work could be done, but i know i'm doing well enough to prolong the life...better than the "experts" have. (i live in a small town in the US and there really are no good repair people who understand this old house and it's riverbed foundation....they use modern methods that have made things worse) *i prefer shorter, frequent vids
Good on you, yes do your research on old traditional methods and look at similar buildings in your area. Then have a go, good luck 👍
As I usually especially with actual renovation videos prefer longer as we are learning from you as you go along. Travel or shopping videos I don't mind shorter or gardening as I do enjoy them but shorter is easier in that case if that helps. I wouldn't have a clue about insulation I would say cost and eco is the way I would go :) well done Sean
I prefer 10 to 15 minutes but you do what is best for you. 🇨🇦❤️
Cracking job 🤗
I likethe current format for thisvlog.
The stairs are more like a ladder. When you build new ones space the treads closer together so they are easier to climb. For the beam upstairs how about a stile to go up and down. It's amazing how well the building has weathered time considering the timber they had to work with. With the work you are doing you won't have to do it again. Are old beams called fossils? I only watch YT so if I get tired I just pause and come back. Whatever works best for you.
I will always watch what ever the length 🤗👍☕🍰
Love Sue ❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
I don't know much about the quality of the different insulation. I'd say stick with what you're doing. What you can afford you use. As far as the length of videos. I'd say keep doing what you're doing. Short/long. I think content of what you're doing on a given day should dictate how long the video could be. Hope you had a lovely weekend with your houseguests.
I do like long or short videos as long as it fits the content. I can watch plastering drywall but only on a timelapse of 10mins. But I can also watch a 30min video of a concrete slab pour. I would watch the 30min video slab pour, because it implies there is a finished result at the end. I can't say if cliffhanger episodes works or not while in the middle of a project. I think what definitely works is to always make videos you yourself would enjoy watching. Consider creating timelapse compilations of particular projects so viewers can get caught up. Hope anything I said helps. That algorithm sucks.
I was looking at that beam going across the middle, could you build up the floor with a frame roughly the same height and do a raised flooring for that room? May need a smaller step yet on the approaching side to cut the step itself in height, just a thought
Another upside of adding insulation is acoustic damping. i am guessing you maybe get strong storms/winds at times and a good night maybe a nice feature. If this is the case, thicker insulation may be an advantage.
I think in general I like shorter, more frequent, videos but I’m pretty relaxed about it really since you’re the one doing the work. A video a day is lovely but it’s a lot of work for you and sometimes (from other UA-camrs of course!) there can be a bit of padding to fill the time out. On the other hand irregular, super-long videos don’t sustain the momentum. There must be a happy medium in there somewhere 😅 I say suit yourself really, we’re not here because you’re exactly like other channels.
I am paranoid about house fires. I have seen demonstrations of Rock Wool at suppressing fires. I know it’s pricey, but that’s what I would use.
Aloha from Maui!! Sean, I so enjoy watching your videos! I will watch whether shorter or longer. I could watch for hours so I recommend a 24-hour livestream 😂. Really though, I appreciate the work you put into the videos as well as the cottage so please keep it up! Mahalo nui !💕🌺🌈🌸🌴
Hi Sean, do what works best for you, I enjoy your videos very much and look forward to them. I like around 20 minutes. As far as insulation goes, I don’t know anything about it but I do see on other channels rockwool being used the most. ❤
Shorter but more frequent. Maybe 12-15 minutes.
Hi Sean enjoyed your video today will watch long or short videos whatever is best for you ❤❤
It will be warmer for the winter and cooler for summer
I'm not a pro, so please if I stated this wrong please correct me. I was having a problem with which to use myself. Then watched a you tube channel comparing the pink to the rockwool. The pink isn't good in area that can get wet. Both were the same when fire was used on them. But rockwool can cost more if you look at the size in each package. The package cost the same, but the rockwool would only use 60 yard to the pinks 100.
What makes a great video is the content determines the length.
Re cottage upstairs beam on the floor. What if you brought the floor level up to the top of the beam and then insulate the void. I don't know your height, so this may or may not be a good idea.
Not possible
Short videos work as we view them in our lunch break.
I prefer longer. Great job all the same!
Shorter more frequent would be great!
Oh yes sipping coffee!! I’ve had trouble finding you Sean….so maybe others are having the same trouble…it used to show up on utube page…now I have to actually go to my subscription department and see the blue dot showing you are uploaded
Thanks for letting me know, have you hit the notification 🔔 bell ?
hi Sean where do you get the insulation rolls from and how much per roll keep up the good work👍👍
Brico stores cost depends on spec
However you need to publish your videos, Sean, is fine with me... it's your channel & I know you have to jump through a lot of hoops to be successful! Either way, I'll be watching!! Always love your content & appreciate what you do!! Blessings to you & your family!! 🇺🇸
Blessings also
Long format if what you are doing at the moment is interesting and engaging to you, we fans pick up on that. Shorter format if you are not feeling it, are shagged, bushed, want day off, a cup-a, a pint or a snuggle with the misses. Surprise us mate!
Rockwool will keep critters out and can handle moisture
For me length depends on frequency. If you posting daily 15min, twice a week 30min, if its weekly maybe an hour or more depending of what level of content you have to piece together. I'll watch them all either way.
VIDEO LENGTH DOESN'T MATTER. LESS OF THE REPEATED EXPLANATIONS WORKS FOR ME 😊
Sean have fun with the length… I think let the camera roll and use the footage unedited.
I love rockwool.
What did you decide to do about the stairs? I'm trying to figure out dimensions up there by eye but with the camera it's so hard to tell!
Not decided yet
15 min max for people not retired with excess time on their hands.
There is a insulation in germany called „ISUM“ looks almost like yours, but is without the yellowish „wool“. You don‘t have to use so many tape for it.
