KC has said that after the depressed mood following the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the deaths of rock icons Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and the energy crisis that he felt people needed to have some fun. This group was created for that purpose. He succeeded.

That's exactly the time period,after73 or 74 when these songs were released from miami(sunshine).friends of mine went to school wit him, also known as sparkt.she said in school when they were partying there behinds off.he was always home. .evidently producing this great music. I see a sly stone influence from that era.

Think about absolutely no social media, no internet, no cellphones and growing up in the late 70’s and 80’s. What did we do? We went roller skating to KC and The Sunshine band! It was a great time to grow up! We also played “foxes & hounds on long summer nights. We knew we had to quit when one of the fathers would whistle so sharp that it could wake the dead. If you weren’t home in 5 minutes you knew there’d be trouble!

Guys, I saw KC & The Sunshine Band a few years ago when KC was 70 and he was still bringing the energy. He had put on a little weight and he joked that they almost had to rename the band KFC & The Sunshine Band. It was an excellent show though. He's still got it!

Kc and the sunshine band were most prominent on the charts between 1975 and 1980. The two main men were Harry Wayne casey and Rick finch (the bassist) They were a miami based funk band who got labelled as a disco band but they were to the 70's what Gloria Estefan and the miami sound machine as well as kool and the gang were to the 80's!

K C & Sunshine were played at all the Disco Dance Clubs in the 70's. Light, fun to get down and dance to. Get down tonight, was a good dance song, was fun, last time couples actually got dressed up to go out and dance in the clubs. Was a real nice break to uplift after the tense times of 70's after the bad politics and ending war in Viet Nam, brought out the deep, somber songs of the war.
    Things were changing politically,
and socially at this time. Some music lovers hated Disco music, but it was a much needed relief in mid 70's after doom and gloom of US War involvement, which created protest songs, folk music, Disco, Motown Soul, R&B, and the changing Rock n Roll genres. Disco was just light, sexy, fun to dance to, and the Clubs were at their peaks with Disco music you could move to, and forget about working all week.

I was very young when they were popular so I didn't get into it as much as some people on here. But it was part of the backdrop of the world I grew up in. Their music was everywhere. I remember when I was 7 and "That's The Way I Like It' came on the radio I was so embarrassed because it was a "dirty song" in my then perception. I would blush beet red.
But KC&TSB were so accepted by mainstream audiences that I remember there was actually a toy set of them with figures, instruments, and a stage and maybe a van (can't remember now.)
My parents not only didn't listen to them, but they didn't let me watch tv other than PBS and the few times our radio was turned on at all it was set to the classical music station. So I only got exposed to these pop culture references when I was with babysitters or over at the neighbor's.

I liked KC and the Sunshine Band. I have nothing against them. Respect and affection. However let's get some priorities straight 1st, the Robsquad has never reacted to Sly and the Family Stone, the godfather of funk and disco! What gives? KC is vanilla Ovaltine by comparison. Sly, when he was on and str8, could rip the rafters off the hall. I saw them 1st in college on a double bill with The Beachboys. One group tried to outperform the other that night and the stadium reverberated for weeks. Sly is historically important. Here they are on ABC's In Concert.

Why stop there!!! Where's Kool and the Gang? LOL. The incredible machine that had a boatload of top tens with some of the funkiest hits ever recorded. Savor this! It's a Celebration.
      ua-cam.com/video/3GwjfUFyY6M/v-deo.html
How about The Isley Brothers! Another significant and iconic group. Who's That Lady. Exquisite!
      ua-cam.com/video/BW8-BRnbV-Q/v-deo.html
Or LTD performing Back in Love Again featuring one of the most powerful voices in funk, Jeffrey Osbourne, along with it's dancing horn section! OMG.
Here is the ultimate disco song performed by the powerhouse group, The Trammps. This song would just kill the floor at Studio 54 or any other disco, anywhere for that matter. Disco Inferno.
      ua-cam.com/video/u5lSeYd_riw/v-deo.html
Or the incredible group Chic. The greatest travesty in the Rock Hall history. Nominated 11 times and still not inducted. ( they individually inducted Niles rogers for his career) . they were hot.
      Here is Le Freak. ua-cam.com/video/4-Vz6tNfV1Y/v-deo.html
I could go on, I am omitting many. I purposely focused on groups that played their own instruments. So I left out great performers like Tavares, The Spinners, the Sylvers, Shalamar, DeBarge and Switch. Tonight I just had a hankering for something more than Ovaltine.

KC and the Sunshine Band blended rock, pop, jazz, funk, soul! The horns, the tambourine, the percussion, drums & keyboard & the rest!
They did Please Don't Go-a ballad too. That's apart from all the greats that others are listing for ya!
    They were fab!

Boogie shoes is a must. We use to dance at the club with the mirror ball and the color lights going on and strobe lights such fun times.

With the release of the self-titled second album KC and the Sunshine Band in 1975 came the group's first major U.S. hit with "Get Down Tonight".[3] It topped the R&B chart in April and hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August.[3] "That's the Way (I Like It)" also became a number one hit[1] in November 1975 and the group did well at the 1976 Grammy Awards. The 1976 album Part 3 yielded two number one singles: "I'm Your Boogie Man"[1] and "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty".[1] Another hit, "Keep It Comin' Love", peaked at number two.

This was a fun period in music history for adults. I was very young but I remember everybody including my parents were constantly having parties pretty much every weekend, and this music was constantly being played on huge record players blairing all night long. The neighbors must have hated us.

They play for the back row people who love to see body movements and beaming smiles. Every paying audience member got a great deal for dough it cost.

In the 1950s, there was a Blues music artist named Joe Hill Louis. He was a "one-man-band", who played music on the streets, and also played some night club concerts. He played the drums, harmonica, and electric guitar. He was so good, he got recording contracts with a number of record labels. Tragically, Joe Hill Louis died in 1957 of tetanus, that he contracted when a cut on his thumb, that he sustained while working his day job as a handyman, got infected. He was 35 years old. Here is a link to his 1952 song, "When I Am Gone", which he recorded for Checker Records (a subsidiary of Chess Records): ua-cam.com/video/8P79_n2YpZY/v-deo.html

I understand Casey, (KC) was persuaded to perform again by one of the ladies that were his backup singers. She brought him and an amazing band back and going for many years now. If you ever get the chance to see them live please get somebody to watch the kids and go!
