  • It took me a few tries over the years, but I finally put in the time to beat Secret of Mana. Both times I fell off in the past, the combat just didn't really vibe with me. But once you get really used to it, it clicks. And then I really made my way through the game and saw all the beautiful spots it had to offer. I'm SUPER excited to check out Trials of Mana, because I've heard that game has some stunning pixel art. Even surpassing the art in this game. Which is hard to believe, but I guess I'll see it for my own eyes some day. For now, just watch the video and enjoy Secret of Mana's world.

This game was something else when I played it in the mid 90's. Thanks for this awesome tour.

You can return to Potos via a glitch. Once you have a full party, you can hold up to push into the jerk that blocks your entry and repeatedly switch characters until you pass the guy and can wander around again. You can't leave without the Flammie though.
Edit: This is my first video of yours so wasn't entirely sure what I'd be getting but I enjoyed it. I'm surprised you didn't show off the little face in the water on the overworld reminiscent of the 'face on Mars'

I think Santa in this game is odd because of the “medieval” setting. Santa being in the same realm as castle guards and swords feels out of place

I hope to see Chrono Trigger videos like this. There's infinite cozy spots, my favorite of all being in 600 A.D by the Zenith Bridge prior to its repair. Standing by the broken bridge and looking into the distant landscape is stunning, literally. I'll never forget it with its awe inspiring music.

My favorite castle from this era (and probably any era) is still Dunan Castle from Suikoden 2.
Speaking of which, a tour of North Window/ Dunan Castle would make an *amazing* episode.

Love this video series...exact sorta thing I wished existed, and now it does! And you're doing a great job of it. Also, yes: that is indeed one very bewildering waterfall...you're not the crazy one, IT IS THE WATERFALL ITSELF THAT HAS GONE MAD.

I read in an article many years ago that this game was made with the snes cd add on in mind. Then the thing was canceled so the game was greatly shortened to fit on the cartridge...oh what would have been of this game if the Play Station actually happened

This game's music does a great job when it comes to the atmosphere of each location. This is my favorite of the series. The other mana games all go to far into gimmicky stuff where this one really feels like a journey in a very unique fantasy world. In mana 1 the world feels connected where in the following games each place feels more and more like a game level for some reason.

"It just look like a bunch of slightly big trees bunched together": Isn't what you're seeing here the broken stump of the mana tree, which was destroyed before you got there?

I don't know why your content is so underrated. You put so much effort in making these. It feels like a video with 2-3M views. But sadly that ain't true.
Keep uploading videos like this. And I'm sure one day you'll have millions of views in your vids.

Both Santa and the subway are because the game is set in our real-world present's future, isn't it? That's why there's an Abe Lincoln and Jeopardy reference on the "vee-dee-oh" orb relics in that one temple! (The reference was a little different in Japanese, but apparently it's still meant to remind people of the modern-day world they were playing in...)
By the way, did you know that the moon on that final The End screen can be in different phases? It actually reads a value out of your save file to decide it, but the value that it reads is just the checksum used to check that your save file isn't corrupt, so it winds up being essentially random; some folks think it was meant to be based on something like how quickly you beat the game, but they read the wrong number by mistake.
Anyway, for memorable spaces, for me, it's the face in the ocean. When I was a kid I swore I'd find some amazing secret there if I just figured out what to do. I'd hover around it on Flammie for ages trying to figure it out. Oh well!
As for places that you can actually visit on foot: it feels like a cop-out, but for me it's the hidden passage in the inn in Matango's castle..... just stepping out into the void like that. I couldn't help but wonder what it looked like for the characters while they were doing it. (I guess just a series of dark tunnels, in hindsight, but for some reason as a kid that possibility didn't occur to me...) I also love that it seems to not have any actual purpose. You can just poke around for no reason. Maybe another thing that used to accomplish something, or maybe just a mapmaker having some fun?
If I were to pick something that isn't just a weird little secret, then I guess the lighthouse? Though, maybe that's a weird little secret too, since you never have to go there, I think? Really, there's something just nice about places that aren't important... maybe because they just feel more peaceful. When I was a kid I always wanted games that would let you just hang out and explore without getting threatened all the time. At least these days folks are finally starting to make games like that!

The lighthouse with captain "Pecard" He even has a bald head. I'm sure that was a reference just for the western translation.

My all time favorite game just because of the vast scope and immense beauty it conjured into its world with the pure skill and merit of the artists behind this masterpiece of its time. Some say it was a rushed and unpolished gem. That, too, captures the spirit of the time.

I like the Lofty Mountains palace where they have the relics from the ancient civilization and they reference news clips, Abe Lincoln, and "veedio clips". I thought that was so cool as a kid revealing that Secret of Mana actually takes place in the distant future of our reality!

That said, sorry, but it gets a laugh when you keep emphasizing "ASSthetic" like that. (It's supposed to sound like "es-thetic.")
Though I admit, it's appropriate that a Moon palace would have a beautiful ass-thetic.
