Back when the Royal York Hotel was proudly proclaimed to be the tallest building in the British Empire. It is dwarfed today. Also, Toronto was a safe city. A person could walk around the city at any time of the day or night in relative safety.
Great footage. Thanks. Looking south from city hall many of those building are still there. And some torn down. Looking north from city hall, the vast majority in the immediate vicinity are gone. Love the look at 1:07 of the Ford Hotel, and also the empty Canada Life south garden before Campbell House was moved there. And, of course, the Ex in its pre-1985 splendour. The CNE was great until the 1985 season when it started being whittled down to the little that remains today. I worked there in 1984 and upon my return in 1985, was saddened to see how much of it didn't return. But I get it, it was transitioning from a true comprehensive exhibition of products, services, foods, technology, agriculture and livestock into a parking lot midway and a racetrack.
In 65 I was a little kid that lived on Ward's Island. I would wonder to myself. 'I live in Canada, what's that place?' As i looked across the water at the city.
1:40 This is some very early of the Canadian flag. The flag became the official flag on 15 Feb 1965, and this footage takes place 6 months later at the end of August.
OK, someone is not explaining what has been done here... this HAS to be 16 or 35mm film footage that has been cleaned up and stabilized with AI, with the frame rate increased to make it look like HD video... because HD video was NOT a thing back in 1965. Heck, using standard def NTSC video outdoors was barely a thing back then except for sports!! That said, using ai to upconvert old film footage is a fantastic way to bring the past to life, making things instantly relatable.
The picture quality is amazing for 1966.
That's motion picture film for you. The digital movie cameras took until the 2010s to match it.
I was born in Dec. 64 and I love seeing footage of what Toronto was like when I was born, this is probably the best quality footage I've seen.
0:00 - 0:16 What rush hour used to look like. Take me back! 🙏
i was 14 years old in 1966 and i love nostalgia...thank you for the upload....the video was very clear....
The Toronto I once loved. Amazing footage!

Cars are actually moving
Absolute chads at 0:45. No fall-arrest harnesses, no high vis, not so much as a t shirt.
Wow. So clear and sharp. This looks like it could have been filmed yesterday.
Great footage. Thanks.

Worked there in the summer of 1981 and it was great. Really loved the old original “exhibition” concept of the Ex.
Fantastic footage and amazing quality. Wow!
sooo cool to see this. nicely cleaned up video as well!
So much grass! I love it!
More of this please ❤ I love archive video of Toronto😊
After the flag was changed...
Cool. I wonder where everyone was running to at the end?
Probably CNE footage.
In 65 I was a little kid that lived on Ward's Island. I would wonder to myself.
'I live in Canada, what's that place?' As i looked across the water at the city.
Wow! I wasn't quite that young, but I remember that stuff as new still. Where's Doc Brown with that Delorean darn it.
Wow, almost like drone footage! Wonder what the people were running from in the last few seconds? A lot of litter on the CNE grounds. Awesome!!
That little clip at the end made the video feel more 21 century. We’re always having to prepare to run while in public spaces. 😐
2:11 I think there was an incident causing people to run like this at the CNE.
It's so clear !!!
Not 1 gun shot is fired!
Stunning restoration. Where's the space needle? 😛😂 j/k we love the CN Tower 🍁
CN Tower came 9 years later in 1973 :)
Nice footage from a drone of the day, also known as a helicopter 😂
I was in Toronto back in 1966. Is there any more footage from that year? That video footage was so clear. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.
August 1965
I think it's at least 1967. The new Canadian Maple leaf flag wasn't incorporated until that year. But what awesome aerial footage!
Great vid! Great year too! :)
Looks like a much nicer place to live

1:15 God, I almost pass out just WATCHING that.
It's incredible what film restoration can do
And not a safety belt in sight lol
lol ppl simply died in traffic accidents or on the job. NBD. Enjoy your lead chip cereal and asbestos caused cancer :)
Thanks for not putting music over top.

Nice drone cam. /s
I thought this was drone footage.
is this video ai enhanced or just colourized?
neither
Colour film was a thing in the 60s, you realize.
Amazing footage of what the Indians built for this country! If you zoom in close enough you'll be able to see them working at the Tim Hortons.
wow! the pollution when they panned back from the City Hall -- crazy!!
This has to be August 1965 or 64.
In an era when the Maple Leafs will skate at the Gardens to win the Stanley Cup one last time and never again.
16mm film?
So Gardiner is the same as 60 years ago. No increase in capacity. And people wonder why the gridlock.
I was 2 in 66.
I was -2 at the time of this film.
I don't care what anybody says, Brutalism was the best style of architecture ever.
Feels like it's imaginary now.
Canada at its finest. Never again will it be so great.
Less traffic
was there a shooting at the end?
This is Toronto in 1965. Somebody probably heard the Beatles were playing the CNE Bandshell or something. lol
Sounds like a Harley; 1:35-1:50.
All men doing the high and dangerous work? Where’s the women? They should be up there getting paid the same
What was that ,, color video in 66 noooo , Color film? colorize B/W Film? colorize video
Colour film was a little over 60 years old when this footage was taken. 😉
no one cared for the camera/helicopter
the easy days
