One of the happiest years of my young life in Toronto. I recognize almost all of these locations. Nice shot of Jane Jacobs at Buthurst St. station, my gateway to Markham Street which has now been erased from the city's memory.
Thanks very much for video of my hometown, Toronto!❤ I lived there from 1966 to 2005, and was 10 in 1971. The sights, cars, and the girls 💓 Shared on Facebook with public Ps I wish the motorcycle sound could be edited out, takes away from my enjoyment of video
Jane Jacobs @ 1:15 "American-Canadian journalist, author, theorist, and activist who influenced urban studies, sociology, and economics" Wikipedia I believe Jacobs lived a few blocks East of Bathurst TTC Station.
Hard to imagine that most of these people would be 80 years old or more now. Many are probably dead and gone. Soemday people will be watching vidoe from 2025 and thinking the same.
I really enjoyed this footage. It's fascinating to see those streets as they were in the 1970s. I wasn’t born yet in 1971, and my parents weren’t even in Toronto at the time. It’s understandable that traffic was much lighter back then compared to today. What struck me most is how much new infrastructure we’ve built over the past 50 years (IMHO, not enough), especially given that the population has more than doubled if not more.
Jane Jacobs was my regular bank customer back in the late 80s early 90s. She and her husband were nice folks. And on another note, this clip shows how slim people were compared to now. Where did we go wrong?!? So many today look like they should be in a Dove ad. Not healthy at all.
Ok. How many have you recognized the great Jane Jacobs!!?? A great lady who tried to protect Toronto from all the goddam condominiums and greed. She was an author and activist, highly knowledgeable about urban studies.
Today I learned that you could lease a clour t.v for 19.99 a month in 1971. I'm not sure if that's a good deal or not but I can guarantee that television weighed at least 100 pounds. 0:26
Wow, no one protesting foreign problems, nobody using the sidewalk as an outdoor lavatory, no homeless encampments, no drug addict screaming in the middle of the road. Place has gone so far downhill it needs to be studied as an example of what not to do.
The winters were harder colder and more snow but driving less congested able to get through Toronto on 401 without stopping! Today in Ontario 2024 you have buffoons like Doug Ford a former drug seller, serial liar as Premier.
Back when you could get on a bus and not have to listen to someone blasting annoying music or talking loud on their cellphone. People had more common sense and manners back then. 🙂
Those were the days my friend. We thought they'd never end.
Miss good old days and looks very peaceful
My family came to Toronto in 1971. I was so little but grew up in the 70s, so many memories of that simpler time!
The cars the clothes and ferry going to the island just makes me smile. Born in the sixties so I lived it and made it thru.

Yes! The year I was born. I always love looking at the cars from any time period. Great video.
Amazing footage of Toronto from a lifetime ago! The camera guy certainly had a eye for pretty girls!

The good old days when life was simpler, safer, and more fun.

The year I moved to Toronto
I was there. Canada was great before the change in demographics and the destruction of our Indigenous and European cultures.
❤ Great Video 👈 🎥👀🤠🇨🇦
I love those cars.
I was just a baby when this was filmed, this seems like forever ago. Anyone got a time machine? I want my old Toronto back.

GO Transit picked you up at home?!? Wow!
A more civilized time.
That's Jane Jacobs in the chopper.
Jane Jacobs, famous American writer who lived in TO 1:15.
Did you spot the late great urban scholar Jane Jacobs shopping at Honest Ed’s?
The highways were empty and people weren't overweight

Lived it in 1971. Toronto was and still is a Great City!
Only four years since they'd won the Stanley Cup.

You're aware 71 in Toronto was full of protests and chaos? Vietnam, civil rights, etc. Of all the years to choose - 71 was wild.
Post-Goin’ Down the Road
Beautiful years…we were married the year before…it’ll be 55 years happily married this year; I’d start over again in a second!
Strange to how little Centre Island has changed.
the year my grandparents came to canada from guyana
A time before The Great Tattooed Smartphone Zombie Invasion.
I wasn't alive on this yet. You guys got it good compare to our generation now. Too much garbage and people has lost love to one another :(
why do we keep hearing a evolutions 1340 cc Harley all the time lmao
Summertime 1971, I was born that August.
Jane Jacobs?
Who’s the grey haired lady?
WOW!! I would love to marry that sweetheart @ 0:56 of this video!!!!
Some of those land yachts are half a block long 😂😂

A.i has advanced.
Everyone is slim & trim
Wow...and it's still a dump.
Back when it was civilized.
You're calling 71 - the year of mass protests and chaos civilized?
