It's Sunday and I'm 21. There are two things that will forever be burnt into my memory. 1 being the fact I've only ever done a deep clean of my room since I was a kid and the fact it's the day the hook of the week is made
Awesome hook for that bell. I've done the bell and have struggled for an idea for the hanger. Also, your videos are a welcome relief from what is going on around us. Thank you for your craftsmanship and for your contribution to maintaining our sanity!
Love watching John swing a hammer he really gets after it! I had a young man in my shop a couple of weeks ago wanting to Try out blacksmithing so I gave him the long talk on heat and how too work some mild steel into a curly piece And he was immediately wanting softer steel because he was worn out swing the hammer hard enough to mold the hot metal !!! Lol we tried 2 pound hammers 3 pounders and a four pound hammer then he tried the treadle hammer and decided that banging on metal for a living is to much work lol 😂
Pretty cool hook John that you forged from Hot Steel. Love your creativity as always. Nice to see decorative items like this right down to the matching nut and bolt..I'm hooked on Hook of The Week,
Awesome hook Grate bell and both made by very talented Blacksmith . John you should ring the bell every sunday to call the class to hook of the week lessons.cheers.
Nice hook! The bell looks good on it and the drone aerial shot of you and the outside view of the shop? AWESOME! You truly are one of the many masters of earth, wind , fire, and water! The basics of any good smith!
I've been thinking about how to craft rafter hooks to hold the hose for my new propane forge, and now I know! Thanks, as always, for your skill and sharing it with us. Now, how did you know that was my next project????
WOW WHAT A GREAT JOB, that project is awesome John. The sound of the bell is remarkable also. I can actually hear and enjoy it. I would have to hide it when the visitors were around. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred
VERY NICE Work! In my opinion, you should clean up that cylinder so it really smooth and clean and either blacken it or polish it and blue it. What a nice addition to the shop!
I say this every Sunday.....”This is the best hook yet!”.... John, how do you keep outdoing yourself each week? Thanks for sharing your work, ideas, and craftsmanship!!! You are very much appreciated!!!
I just re-watched this video for the second time and noticed the big hole in your shirt. I don't know about you, but I love hand stitching patches onto my ragged smithing clothes.
Need a black finish on the bell to match the hook. Nice job John, makes for a real pretty hanger - would suit my shearing shed to hang the shearer support from.
That’s awesome John! Reminds me when I was little, my mom would ring a bell that was mounted outside by the back doorway to let us know dinner was ready! Lol
Thanks John for e inspiration, i have a bell like the one you made and only had it tied with a piece of rope around a beam , now im going to make a beam hanger similar to your design thanks again for the inspiration.
salut et fraternité, géniale cette video, et merci également pour les autres. faite attention à vous et à toute votre famille avec se qui arrive en ce moment . à bientôt .
If only air cylinders were made out of brass so the bell would actually sound good :p Seriously though this is one of your best hooks in a while imo. It's beautiful and perfectly functional, just like a good object should be.
Neat project I thought you were just going to hook over the joist . That last shot was Sweet now .. Who was flying the drone :} Did you let the boss take over the controls?:}
John, thank you for this rafter hook -- I think I now need to make some. ;) Also, you and some other Blacksmiths on UA-cam have mentioned taking care to not shear a forge weld. Does this mean that forge welds are that inferior to gas or electric welds? Could you go into detail on this in a future video? Take care!
A well done forge weld is as strong as the original material but the only way to know that is through destructive testing. There is almost always a transition zone between fully welded and the area that wasn't meant to be welded that will be more likely to open up under stress. Gas and electric welds will almost always fail when forged due to the dissimilarities between those welds and the parent material, which leaves a forge weld as the preferred method when the work will be forged after welding.
Honestly, I'm a little disappointed that you didn't flare the bottom of the bell... 😥 But if you were going to, do you think you might try to hammer it over a large round form like a large pipe, or would you prefer to make/find a flare form & press it down onto it with something like the fly press or hydraulic press? 🤔

Really sweet project from start to finish. Bell, hook the whole thing. Those square machine nut and bolt just added that final touch of excellence.
Sunday morning hook, coffee an the world seems sane for just a little while!!!

That was a lot of work to ring that bell, but I loved every minute!

This, sir, is one of my favorite videos from you. Very nicely done.
Nice, welding, scrolling, shaping 👍 totally hooked up :) you'll need to ding it for the start of class. Great job John
Indeed. After a half-century or so of beating on metal, "sometimes you just get lucky". lol.
John, this two part project is my favorite so far. Love it. Good job.
Never seen that much of the outside of your shop, very cool hook of the week sir, liked the bell too!!! Keep up the good work!
One of your "best yet" John! You really cover a lot of little details in your running dialog. What a great final shot!
This is the first time i have seen a rafter hook, and I believe I can find multiple uses for them! That bell really has some resonance, doesn't it?
It does, I doubt I will ring it often
I've been thinking about how to craft rafter hooks to hold the hose for my new propane forge, and now I know! Thanks, as always, for your skill and sharing it with us. Now, how did you know that was my next project????
I wish those foundry gloves weren't so expensive cause they are the best
This one was perfect for Sunday afternoon! Thank you sir!
A very appropriate hook nicely done.
Great hook, I believe I enjoyed watching you make this hook more than all of the others. Thank you for sharing your great skills with us.

I just re-watched this video for the second time and noticed the big hole in your shirt. I don't know about you, but I love hand stitching patches onto my ragged smithing clothes.
And there it was! Maybe not on or in your little cabin but on your shop. That was spot on! Great. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Very nice John! This might be my favorite project. Amazing.
Your work is true inspiration.
Need a black finish on the bell to match the hook. Nice job John, makes for a real pretty hanger - would suit my shearing shed to hang the shearer support from.
That's kinda how I make rasp spurs
Neat design, and what an attractive shape! I can see this one as a design element in a project. :)
That’s awesome John! Reminds me when I was little, my mom would ring a bell that was mounted outside by the back doorway to let us know dinner was ready! Lol

Another great video...the bell and rafter hook are awesome!
Duluth Trading Company should sponsor you. Fire hose pants (I love mine) with a Duluth BBQ long sleeve. Sending good vibes that they do. 😁
I asked them once, but they didn't seem interested
Oh my freaking goodness that is so pretty
Thanks John for e inspiration, i have a bell like the one you made and only had it tied with a piece of rope around a beam , now im going to make a beam hanger similar to your design thanks again for the inspiration.
No touchmark? Something for the art historians of the future to argue about.

You can always tell a guy who has pushed some metal around with a hammer
That’s great hook

The Meta Wedge Keeper on the Sledge Hammer Head is falling out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's beefy and beautiful
awesome hook and very interesting to watch :) thats the way how spurs are made? thanks for sharing your knowledge with us :)
** Now I like that .I wonder if it would sound as good using a 5lb lp gas tank ? **
Bear Good luck with that last one, though it may work to remind her to bring you the list also. Lol
I would like you to polish the bell, make it shine man like your work.
very nice!
nice hook
Put the bell outside house, the wife can let you know when you’re meals are ready, just a thought
Cool man
Nice hanger/hook! I think you missed the opportunity to do a "subscribe and click the **clang**" at the end of the video 😁
Neat project I thought you were just going to hook over the joist . That last shot was Sweet now .. Who was flying the drone :} Did you let the boss take over the controls?:}
I was using the Mavic Air. It has GPS stabilization, so I can just park it where I want it and it stay there. Sort of like a really tall tripod.
John, thank you for this rafter hook -- I think I now need to make some. ;)

Georges hook, did you drill and flush rivet on the forge welded hook side?
There are no rivets used. One forge weld and one bolt to hold it to the rafter
Could you please tell me what psi you put your forge at for welding? Thanks.
I run about 25 psi. But every burner design and forge set up will be different
