I thought Nomadland was just alright but I do think Zhao's win in director was deserving. Her vision and execution of it was so distinct and unique that even if the final product wasn't exceptional, the effort behind it was. Still am not a fan of McDormand's win-her work was good, but nothing spectacular; felt like she was on autopilot for the whole movie-or the movie's triumph in BP. Would've gone Mulligan or Kirby for Actress and Minari, Sound of Metal, or The Father in BP. The rest of the above-the-line wins are, in my opinion, at least solid; a few were exceptional like Hopkins for Actor and Yuh-jung Youn for Supp. Actress
Love Nomadland! That was my favorite movie of 2020! I was rooting for it ever since it was announced and have always thought it was gonna be a contender for Best Picture and so glad it did. It was poignant and moving and I still rewatch it and aged well for me especially Frances McDormand as Fern. She was subtle and she moved me, especially in the quietest moments. I was secretly hoping she'd win. And I literally shouted when her name was announced. Deserved for me. I saw Minari, The Sound of Metal and The Father too, and those were fire too!
Honestly one of the best Acting wins ever; Sure, I preferred Boseman/Ahmed for Actor and Davis for Actress, but boyh winners were still amazing and make up a stellar lineup. I 100% agree with Nomadland's Directure/Picture wins, it was my favorite movie of 2020 and, technically, my fave for 2021 (idk why ppl don't acknowledge it technically got its release in January). My second choices were Sound of Metal for Picture and Lee Isaac Chung for Director, but it's a solid gap between my second choices and the actual winner. That being said, solid nominees for both, the only one's I'd have kicked out were Mank for Picture/Director and Trial for Picture. Even then, I like Trial, it's just not a movie I found especially groundbreaking and paired with Mank felt like the safest choices of the night.
I also think so (not to diminish her great performance). That’s why I think she wasn’t nominated this year for The Tragedy of Macbeth, and I think if she had been campaigned in supporting she probably would’ve gotten in.
My personal choices: Picture: Promising Young Woman Director: Thomas Vinterberg Actor: Hopkins Actress: Mulligan Original screenplay: Promising Adapted Screenplay: The Father Supporting actor: Kaluuya Supporting actress: Bakalova Score: Soul Song: Io Si Cinematography: Mank Costume: Emma Production: Mank Editing: The Father Visual effects: Tenet Sound: Sound of Metal Animated Short: If anything happens Animated feature: Soul Documentary: The Mole Agent Documentary Short: Love Song for Latasha Live action Short: Letter Room International: Another Round Makeup: Ma Rainey's
I preferred Ahmed. He gave the best performance of the year of any category. Yes to supporting actor and actress. Supporting actress wasn’t all that close to me . The Academy got it right. Same for director. I am more conflicted with best picture. Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal are the ones I haven’t stopped thinking about. Best actress ? I don’t have a preference Actor: Ahmed Supporting Actor Daniel Kaluuya Supporting Actress Youn- Yuh jung Director Chloe Zhao
Completely understand why Nomadland and McDormand won, I would probably have gone for Sound of Metal or Promising Young Woman for Picture and definitely Mulligan for Actress but I think all the above the line wins were deserved last year (very unlikely to be the case this year). I loved Ahmed in Sound of Metal, agree that he deserved more but when you're up against Hopkins the Powerhouse it's a reward just to be nominated. Last year's acting nomination line ups are sooo much better than this year's it's not even funny.
Carey still gave my favorite performance of last year, I rank her over Hopkins in The Father, which I know I'm gonna get shit for but fuck it, I don't give a shit. Also Rip Soul, that really deserved a Best Picture nom. Also I'm Thinking of Ending Things. But hey, Judas and Sound of Metal AND The Father all getting nominated is based as fuck, so I'm not complaining.
The 3 female categories at the golden globes were weird, andra day in USvsBH for drama, rosamund pike in I care a lot for comedy, and Jodie foster in the Mauritanian for supporting?
David Fincher really should have won Directing. Ik, Mank was overlooked by soooo many people, but Fincher's direction made the movie soo fucking perfect in every single shot!!!
Oscars 2021 was awful with a bad opening ceremony and why Best Picture category is not last? Why Best Actor last? But I am so happy for winners except Song, Cinematography and Documentary Feature
@@dariussalepetru6770 As someone that loves Cinematography, I can understand how every shot in Nomadland was done. I still literally cannot figure out how some shots in Mank were done. That was a proper "professionals voting for their profession" example
Simply put, no. No one talks about Nomadland and Chloe Zhao almost immediately snuffed out any hype she had as a new director with the release of Eternals. I genuinely think it is a potentially worse winner than Green Book. Would have given it to Judas and the Black Messiah or Mank personally. The Father or Promising Young Woman would have even been better. Minari and others could have even won over it.
Personally I think green book is a more problematic win than nomadland considering the subject matter and how Don Shirley’s family feels about it. That being said they both are really really REALLY boring wins that were nominated alongside muuuuuch better movies both years. You’re totally right, I haven’t heard a peep about nomadland since the oscars, at least the acting is entertaining in green book. AT LEAST.
Nomadland was the most critically acclaimed movie of the bunch with the highest score. So even if you didn't like it, objectively you can't say that it was a "wrong" choice. Nobody is talking about Trial 7 and Promising Young Woman anymore.
I wish that Viola Davis or Andra Day would had won the Oscar no offense to Frances but I do think that if Viola Davis would had been nominated in the supporting actress category and she could have won the Oscar. I think that Regina King could been nominated for best director for one night in Miami. I hope this year's Oscars is better than last year
I would’ve given best actress to either viola Davis or Andra day, best actor goes to Chadwick Boseman and best supporting actress goes to Maria Bakalova and best picture is judas ofc
Frances plays Frances in everything she does. Boseman did not deserve a win and he was only there because of his death. Award him for a body of work? His body of work is not all the flash. it's meh at best. Award him cause we want a marvel actor to win? Voters didn't fall for the twitter narrative.
@@masterofswagger8572 coming into that night Hopkins hasn't won in 3 Decades until that night, sometimes you got to understand that not everyone was happy with that decision
@@nathantucker8489 Not really and that's not fair, award the Best Actor because of the performance on screen not because of his passing. This is a competition award show, not a funeral. Chadwick was good but Hopkins' performance was 10 times superior than him. I've always been confused this year. This Was the covid year presentation in deep lockdown but the films were made mostly long before that. Hence, Why are these a bit of the worst films ever released to 'win' awards??? Almost all of these movies were Far from great so what gives? Connected to covid or just imo Bad Year???
Nomadland was the middest of MID. Honestly didn’t deserve any of its wins. Like it’s just an average movie at absolute best. Mcdormand was pretty good but when you have viola Davis and mulligan RIGHT THERE, it’s so disappointing. Still happy Vinterberg got in over Sorkin though. Makes up for it just a bit.

It'd be great if the academy released the voting number after the ceremony, just to see who came up second or which races were close or not.
For me, the father was the best, then sound of metal, but nomadland was a fine winner.
Congrats Nomadland. Thanks Frances McDormand a true legend

The best moment of this video is when he subtly goes "my son Alan Kim" and keeps going without missing a beat lol
Frances McDormand won best actress because every time she gets nominated in that category she wins
No, she won best actress because she’s the best actress alive today and gave the best performance of that year.
I also think so (not to diminish her great performance). That’s why I think she wasn’t nominated this year for The Tragedy of Macbeth, and I think if she had been campaigned in supporting she probably would’ve gotten in.
Love the new intro 🤌🏻
Nomadland is one of the worst aging BP winners ever
My personal choices:
Picture: Promising Young Woman
Director: Thomas Vinterberg
Actor: Hopkins
Actress: Mulligan
Original screenplay: Promising
Adapted Screenplay: The Father
Supporting actor: Kaluuya
Supporting actress: Bakalova
Score: Soul
Song: Io Si
Cinematography: Mank
Costume: Emma
Production: Mank
Editing: The Father
Visual effects: Tenet
Sound: Sound of Metal
Animated Short: If anything happens
Animated feature: Soul
Documentary: The Mole Agent
Documentary Short: Love Song for Latasha
Live action Short: Letter Room
International: Another Round
Makeup: Ma Rainey's
Still feels too recent to really tell with best picture, but Sound of Metal seems to be aging the best and growing an audience the last year
