The Selby Market Cross is a post medieval replacement for the original one destroyed in the Civil War. There was a great battle in Selby with Sir Thomas Fairfax taking the town from a Royalist force but then having to retreat to Hull. You missed the great East window of the Abbey church, much larger than the one you thought was big. It is one of the few completely retained churches after the closure of the monasteries, usually most churches were demolished, or only part kept. Selby is unusual because all the other monks buildings were removed while the entire church remained. The George inn probably began as a guest house for visitors to the Abbey when it was still an Abbey.

The only good thing about all of Yorkshire is the nearest road out of the place.
