The power of discourse, whether filled with positivity, emotion, angst or vitriole, nonetheless reflects the diversity of thought in society. So Thank You. I am only a recent student of China, having visited just once, and as a result, I know very little of it and its history -- that much is abundantly clear from this video. But I am Chinese, and extremely proud of my ancestry. My forefathers came to this country from Southern China many centuries ago. This, coupled with China's growing global importance and proximity to us in ASEAN, prompts the conversations I have and will continue to do so, with folks like Wei Hoong. China, like all other nations, is extremely complex and colourful, the sum total of many millions of kinds of people and backgrounds. Hence, all viewpoints, from all statures, matter. So I will continue to seek out people like Wei Hoong who have spent time there working and living, studying her past and present, and are willing to talk, so that everyone may hopefully benefit and learn. As for me -- apologies are in order. I should know more about my ancestral homeland. I vow to continue to study her and to better understand, through the power of conversation and the consumption of the abundance of media available, the many layers of complexity of this huge nation from which my forefathers emanated. I used to hold strong view against China due to media portrayal and ignorance. Ever since my first visit to China in 2018, I started to learn about her, everything including history. Like Wei Hong, I'm Chinese-ed and currently working in China. I'm also a Straits Chinese with ancestry dating back to Ko Chow (Gaozhou) and Palembang. I agree with Wei Hong that our biggest strength lies in our ability in being highly/fully conversant in Sinic, Nusantarian and Western civilisations. Not just the languages but also its knowledge systems and ways of life.
Keeping an open mind is important especially in this era, and you have demonstrated in this case, well done! Knowing what we don’t know and recognizing that is a big leap forward 👍👍👍
I don’t understand why he brought up Tibet, Xinjiang? Obviously either he never been to China those regions or his mindset already influenced by western media. Obviously he doesn’t believe what so many foreigners living in China or travelled those regions and debunked those accusations. As any overseas Chinese, hk protesters were violent and china military was not even involved unliked Americans and to think China was heavy handed towards hk is incorrect. Hk is still free to take care of its business.
As a host, it's your responsibility to learn more about China to be able to craft more nuanced and critical questions about China. Or to reveal such ignorance. At least you need to have a general ideas of different perspectives. Nevertheless, your guess is really awesome with his knowledge that decisively cut across Western propaganda and false narrative. Although you are starting to show doubt, you still give too much credit to western mainstream media. The US has a long history of inventing atrocities in “enemy states” so they can instigate regime change, coups and military intervention for “humanitarian reasons”. Recommend the book “Atrocity Fabrication and Its Consequences” by University of London scholar A B Abrams. The book has some great chapters on Xinjiang, Tibet, Tiananmen in addition to the well known WMDs in Iraq, chemical weapons in Syria etc.

Ha ha not sure if the host will have him back. I thought that the discussions were pretty shallow and one sided with poor examples like HK declining over the past 20 years or so. Not sure if this is factually correct. I thought HK declined was only in the last few years because of Covid , CCP National Security and US trade sanctions? Even if it were true HK was handed over to CCP in 1997 so whose fault was it for the decline??
My daughter was educated in Kuen Cheng. In her Form 2 she was given a ASEAN Scholarship but I told her not to take it as it will delay her higher education. She continued with her UEC did her medical degree in Calgary, her Residency in U of Manitoba and Fellowship in MD Anderson. She became a director of one of the medical corporations in Canada. Thus my suggestion was not wrong. The UEC is highly recognised overseas. Many of Malaysian Chinese students are in TsingHua University in China. Prof Loh is correct about this being a Malaysian advantage/ something only Malaysia has.
I am not sure that China is so ready to take in foreigners today to work in their local medical hospitals with 20% unemployed local graduates and have them rise up the ranks while working in China?
Tibet and XINJIANG are so beautiful and developed. The people there are so happy and their lives have improved by leaps and bounds. Go there and see for yourself brother. I had visited both.
Ya, before Tibet became part of China it was 90% a slave country. Today the GDP of Tibet is around US8K vs US1800 in India. Loh Wei Hong is not wrong about the military encirclement of China by US military bases that he alluded to in referring to the number of US military bases globally. 5. High Speed Rail - Not sure that delaying the implementation of HSR is a bad thing. Would not be too late if it can be implemented together with Thailand to complete the link from China to Singapore. At the very least, this would almost guarantee that there is sufficient passenger/cargo loads to recover its cost of construction and operation. Cannot agree more with Loh Wei Hoong's take that Asean's best strategy is to be neutral. Whether either of the 2 antagonists will continue to allow that remains to be seen.

Actually, the host is really a reflection of the bananas in Malaysia(Including me). My UEC friends studied the history of China, I only got to know more about it after visiting China. I was wondering where were all the old temples and historical sites. Then I went down the youtube rabbit hole to learn about the cultural revolution, and the beef between the Kuomintang and Communist party. All these are not covered in your local Malaysian history textbooks. Moreover, if you don't speak Mandarin, you're sorta opt out of the general discussions amongst the mainlanders. Your perspective will be skewed towards the West. It's not entirely your fault.
The key factor is China's excellent government. Especially after Mr XJP became leader. He went after corruption and poverty so hard, no country or leader in the world ever could emulate. Not even LKY. So give credit accordingly due to the CPC. No matter how hard working you are, if your top govt officials are makan rasuah everyday for 50-60 years, your success will be very limited.

I’m impressed with this conversation. Let me add an opinion about the population issue. It’s the preoccupation of living well without any responsibility and anxiety of maintaining a family. New opportunities to travel and vacation are the first priority of the new generation.
Actually studies have shown that the key contributor to declining births or replacement ratio is firstly migration to cities which drives up costs of living in cities. Also if these migrants had remained farmers without the option of living and working in factories in cities then they will be producing like rabbit# because they will need more hands to work the land to increase production

As a 4th gen Hakka-Indonesian, I can’t be happier to find out that 阿叔 Loh is also a fellow Hakka. His depiction of our ancestral hometown, Meizhou is accurate too. I last visited it on mid 2008 and my ancestral home did already come with a toilet inside. Sadly, it has to be demolished to make way for highway construction in 2012-2013. Guess what.. the compensation amount is rather huge that it’s enough for my 大伯 (Dad’s older brother) to purchase an apartment unit in Shenzhen 😊. His story pretty much matches what I’ve seen happened to my relatives back there. Some sidenote though, he didn’t fully describe how awfully poor Meizhou looks in late 70s. My late grandparents and parents were directly witnessing the sorry state of their relatives there during that period. Eating rice is seen as luxury that it’s best to eat it as a congee (bubur). My grandpa had to remit money back to support his Mom there. Modern electronics like fridge / tv had to be purchased in HK and transported there. That’s how dire it was! But hey.. time has changed. Meizhou now has its own high speed train service. Its public toilets will readily humiliate any toilets in typical Indonesian / Malaysian kampungs 😂.

Hi there , I am a Malaysian living in Hong Kong for almost 15 years. During the social unrest 2019, I witness the whole drama with my kids. I am also Chinese educated in a Chinese school in Malaysia, growing up with western ideas and values. I would like to make some comments on this channel, your guest Loh Wei Hoong and the host. Mr. Loh is very really very insightful , experienced to share his experience. We had similar Chinese experiences when we lived in Shanghai and Shenzen before moved to Hong Kong. Hong Kong issue is a complicated eco-social issue, the main stream media made it as if it is an ideology challenge to Hong Kong free democratic practise. It is not as simple as being commented by the host. I disagreed with the host to label Mr. Loh as Pro-China. Mr. Loh was just describing the changes of China over the years and the growth he witnessed. Hope that the host be careful with his comments. I strongly suggest the host prepare his homework before present his questions to the host, even his comments. Example of Nepal is an independent country, not China province, Xinjiang and Tibet are autonomous regions. He lacks understanding and misconception of Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and world affairs knowledge to make comments. Not against any personal attack but rather hoping the host do his homework, he has a lot to read up, understand the geo politics before conduct any such type of talks. When we learn through conversation like this, it is not to put down others, but rather to respect and learn. One last point I would like to say is that the host likes to mention"You do have children in China", to me is more like a grammatically phrase to ask such question. The more polite way should be " Your children grow up in China" . You did not mention HK was crawling with Western agents doing what they themselves know. They took advantage of the social-economic problems in Hong Kong. Those who stirrup trouble in HK and had to run away to the West are regretting it. Most of them carry adapt or of marketable value, except in HK. They can only speak Cantonese. Even Uni grads their English is not easy to understand.
1) I don't agree with Mr Loh that Russia's intention was to conquer Ukraine in 2022. He is wrong. Russia only wanted Ukn to be a neutral country. Even now Putin does not which to destroy Ukn because he still wishes to have Ukn as a stable neighbor, but a NEUTRAL one (not joining NATO). 2) Wrong to say China is too weak to take over Taiwan militarily. Beijing could easily flatten Taiwan with its huge, modern weapons and the USA can't do anything about it. The current leaders of Asean countries (except Philippines) are very clear that they have to stay together and do not choose sides. So far, even when the government changes, they still stick together. However, US has too much influence on Philippines. Right now there is a concern about Thailand's new government. The seems to be an invisible hand in the background.
When Mr. Khoo started the context about China "miracle" economic performance, this prompts to ask this question: What will Malaysia be like if it is ran by the Malaysian Chinese Politicians? Will Malaysian economic performance be in par with Singapore and also less impressive when compared to China's economic? Malaysia is not only hindered by racial economic issues but also by Islamic religious extremism, just like the countries in the Middle East, parts of Africa and also Xinjiang. Fortunately for Xinjiang, China did an excellent job of getting rid of the extremism there through re-education, vocational training and job placements... as a result Xinjiang's economy grew and people prospered. Hope Malaysia gets rid of its racialist policies and religious extremism.

Gosh what a huge dilemma for ASEAN. The most recent example is Sri Lanka. In fairness, the IMF started the ball rolling. Cny was a great unmatched understudy. They are far more artful in the implosion of countries of course with the help of the Rajapaksa and other long time government officials. The West aided the war mongering and death of estimates of 120,000 innocent civilians along with many others participating in the bombing and devastation of northern Sri Lanka's Tamil Eelam. It led the path for cny to lend money and rebuild at a horrendous cost as we know, now. It led to the loss of Hambantota to foreign hands to become India's nightmare in the Indian Ocean. Now, Maldives is attempting a similar implosion. India was the only country that took a humanitarian approach to Sri Lanka when she imploded with a civil war, most recently. The difficulty for ASEAN is that the path to money and development is not benign. It is full of potholes, land and sea mines ready to implode any country in short order. CNY IS NOT OFFERING FREE MONEY AND DEVELOPMENT USING THEIR LABOUR FORCE WITH NO ATTACHMENTS MUCH LIKE THE TURKISH ICE CREAM MAN. THERE IS A PRICE TO PAY FOR REACHING FOR EASY MONEY. THE SUBTLE LOSS OF SOVEREIGNTY IS LOOMING ALL OVER ASEAN. The early emigres of the motherland have been very industrious indeed but they seem to have forgotten why they were immigrants to ASEAN. Certainly, the blending with Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and now Laos and Cambodia is amazing, remaining ethnically Chinese with some mixing but retaining proudly their origins, in spite of their early expulsions. In Malaysia, the different ethnic groups have been maintained as separate, holding their individual identities although young Malaysians see past the religious separations by politicians and mingle. Of course, the British Empire did no one any favours in China, ASEAN or India! So, the struggle has been hard and incredulously, how all of Asia has managed remarkable success, progress with her combined sheer determination as peoples of un-phased resourcefulness and survival. AND NOW, WE ARE TRULY AT A CROSSROADS. WE WANT CONTINUED SUCCESS BUT AT WHAT COST? IS THERE ANOTHER HEGEMON LOOMING? LIVE AND LET LIVE IS NOT A CNY IDEAL. Obviously, you did not understand what the lecturer is saying. He said that the housing situation was in a dire condition. The economy has been faltering. This led to a lot of unhappiness and anger. Yes, the protest started due to some laws being introduced in HK. What the lecturer and some people are alluding to is that the protests were manipulated by the US and western agencies. Some people said it is common that the US manipulated genuine grievances on some social issues into protests against the government. Nury Vittachi, a well known journalist wrote a book on the protests called "The other side of The Story : A Secret War in Hong Kong". In the book, he detailed how the protests were manipulated and funded by US agencies like the NED. For you to say that an economic issue can easily be solved by just crossing the border to work in Shenzhen is an indication of a simple-minded person who doesn't know about reality. If the HK issue is so simple, why doesn't all Malaysians cross over to Singapore to work? Then, there won't be any complaint about the falling ringgit with its weak purchasing power.

I am only a recent student of China, having visited just once, and as a result, I know very little of it and its history -- that much is abundantly clear from this video.
But I am Chinese, and extremely proud of my ancestry. My forefathers came to this country from Southern China many centuries ago. This, coupled with China's growing global importance and proximity to us in ASEAN, prompts the conversations I have and will continue to do so, with folks like Wei Hoong.
China, like all other nations, is extremely complex and colourful, the sum total of many millions of kinds of people and backgrounds. Hence, all viewpoints, from all statures, matter.
So I will continue to seek out people like Wei Hoong who have spent time there working and living, studying her past and present, and are willing to talk, so that everyone may hopefully benefit and learn.
As for me -- apologies are in order. I should know more about my ancestral homeland. I vow to continue to study her and to better understand, through the power of conversation and the consumption of the abundance of media available, the many layers of complexity of this huge nation from which my forefathers emanated.

I used to hold strong view against China due to media portrayal and ignorance. Ever since my first visit to China in 2018, I started to learn about her, everything including history. Like Wei Hong, I'm Chinese-ed and currently working in China. I'm also a Straits Chinese with ancestry dating back to Ko Chow (Gaozhou) and Palembang.
I agree with Wei Hong that our biggest strength lies in our ability in being highly/fully conversant in Sinic, Nusantarian and Western civilisations. Not just the languages but also its knowledge systems and ways of life.
Keeping an open mind is important especially in this era, and you have demonstrated in this case, well done! Knowing what we don’t know and recognizing that is a big leap forward 👍👍👍
I don’t understand why he brought up Tibet, Xinjiang? Obviously either he never been to China those regions or his mindset already influenced by western media. Obviously he doesn’t believe what so many foreigners living in China or travelled those regions and debunked those accusations. As any overseas Chinese, hk protesters were violent and china military was not even involved unliked Americans and to think China was heavy handed towards hk is incorrect. Hk is still free to take care of its business.

Although you are starting to show doubt, you still give too much credit to western mainstream media. The US has a long history of inventing atrocities in “enemy states” so they can instigate regime change, coups and military intervention for “humanitarian reasons”. Recommend the book “Atrocity Fabrication and Its Consequences” by University of London scholar A B Abrams. The book has some great chapters on Xinjiang, Tibet, Tiananmen in addition to the well known WMDs in Iraq, chemical weapons in Syria etc.

Not sure if this is factually correct. I thought HK declined was only in the last few years because of Covid , CCP National Security and US trade sanctions? My daughter was educated in Kuen Cheng. In her Form 2 she was given a ASEAN Scholarship but I told her not to take it as it will delay her higher education. She continued with her UEC did her medical degree in Calgary, her Residency in U of Manitoba and Fellowship in MD Anderson. She became a director of one of the medical corporations in Canada. Thus my suggestion was not wrong. The UEC is highly recognised overseas. Many of Malaysian Chinese students are in TsingHua University in China. Prof Loh is correct about this being a Malaysian advantage/ something only Malaysia has.

4. China is historically not a geographically expansionist country other than on its own borders and currently relies on soft power to expand its influence. Loh Wei Hong is not wrong about the military encirclement of China by US military bases that he alluded to in referring to the number of US military bases globally.
5. High Speed Rail - Not sure that delaying the implementation of HSR is a bad thing. Would not be too late if it can be implemented together with Thailand to complete the link from China to Singapore. At the very least, this would almost guarantee that there is sufficient passenger/cargo loads to recover its cost of construction and operation.

Actually, the host is really a reflection of the bananas in Malaysia(Including me). My UEC friends studied the history of China, I only got to know more about it after visiting China. I was wondering where were all the old temples and historical sites. Then I went down the youtube rabbit hole to learn about the cultural revolution, and the beef between the Kuomintang and Communist party. All these are not covered in your local Malaysian history textbooks. Moreover, if you don't speak Mandarin, you're sorta opt out of the general discussions amongst the mainlanders. Your perspective will be skewed towards the West. It's not entirely your fault.

Actually studies have shown that the key contributor to declining births or replacement ratio is firstly migration to cities which drives up costs of living in cities. Also if these migrants had remained farmers without the option of living and working in factories in cities then they will be producing like rabbit# because they will need more hands to work the land to increase production

As a 4th gen Hakka-Indonesian, I can’t be happier to find out that 阿叔 Loh is also a fellow Hakka.
His depiction of our ancestral hometown, Meizhou is accurate too. I last visited it on mid 2008 and my ancestral home did already come with a toilet inside. Sadly, it has to be demolished to make way for highway construction in 2012-2013. Guess what.. the compensation amount is rather huge that it’s enough for my 大伯 (Dad’s older brother) to purchase an apartment unit in Shenzhen 😊.
His story pretty much matches what I’ve seen happened to my relatives back there.
Some sidenote though, he didn’t fully describe how awfully poor Meizhou looks in late 70s.
My late grandparents and parents were directly witnessing the sorry state of their relatives there during that period. Eating rice is seen as luxury that it’s best to eat it as a congee (bubur). My grandpa had to remit money back to support his Mom there. Modern electronics like fridge / tv had to be purchased in HK and transported there. That’s how dire it was!
But hey.. time has changed. Meizhou now has its own high speed train service. Its public toilets will readily humiliate any toilets in typical Indonesian / Malaysian kampungs 😂.

Hi there , I am a Malaysian living in Hong Kong for almost 15 years. During the social unrest 2019, I witness the whole drama with my kids. I am also Chinese educated in a Chinese school in Malaysia, growing up with western ideas and values. I would like to make some comments on this channel, your guest Loh Wei Hoong and the host. Mr. Loh is very really very insightful , experienced to share his experience. We had similar Chinese experiences when we lived in Shanghai and Shenzen before moved to Hong Kong. Hong Kong issue is a complicated eco-social issue, the main stream media made it as if it is an ideology challenge to Hong Kong free democratic practise. It is not as simple as being commented by the host. I disagreed with the host to label Mr. Loh as Pro-China. Mr. Loh was just describing the changes of China over the years and the growth he witnessed. Hope that the host be careful with his comments. I strongly suggest the host prepare his homework before present his questions to the host, even his comments. Example of Nepal is an independent country, not China province, Xinjiang and Tibet are autonomous regions. He lacks understanding and misconception of Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and world affairs knowledge to make comments. Not against any personal attack but rather hoping the host do his homework, he has a lot to read up, understand the geo politics before conduct any such type of talks. When we learn through conversation like this, it is not to put down others, but rather to respect and learn. One last point I would like to say is that the host likes to mention"You do have children in China", to me is more like a grammatically phrase to ask such question. The more polite way should be " Your children grow up in China" . Just like my experience, my kids are born in Malaysia, grow up in China and Hong Kong (which Hong Kong is part of China!), they are not made in China so it is NOT "I have children in China" ! You did not mention HK was crawling with Western agents doing what they themselves know. They took advantage of the social-economic problems in Hong Kong. Those who stirrup trouble in HK and had to run away to the West are regretting it. Most of them carry adapt or of marketable value, except in HK. They can only speak Cantonese. 1) I don't agree with Mr Loh that Russia's intention was to conquer Ukraine in 2022. He is wrong. Russia only wanted Ukn to be a neutral country. Even now Putin does not which to destroy Ukn because he still wishes to have Ukn as a stable neighbor, but a NEUTRAL one (not joining NATO).
2) Wrong to say China is too weak to take over Taiwan militarily. Beijing could easily flatten Taiwan with its huge, modern weapons and the USA can't do anything about it. So far, even when the government changes, they still stick together. However, US has too much influence on Philippines. Right now there is a concern about Thailand's new government. I have no idea what are you talking about. Qing is the previous Chinese Government before ROC. And PRC defeated ROC and gained the right to Rule China. This is how legitimacy of a country measured, except the newly founded countries from Colonial Rule after WW II.
So quoting Qing Dynasty's ruling areas is the Direct evidence for the Legitimacy of ROC's claim, hence the PRC's claim.

Obviously, you did not understand what the lecturer is saying. He said that the housing situation was in a dire condition. The economy has been faltering. This led to a lot of unhappiness and anger. Yes, the protest started due to some laws being introduced in HK. What the lecturer and some people are alluding to is that the protests were manipulated by the US and western agencies. Some people said it is common that the US manipulated genuine grievances on some social issues into protests against the government. Nury Vittachi, a well known journalist wrote a book on the protests called "The other side of The Story : A Secret War in Hong Kong". In the book, he detailed how the protests were manipulated and funded by US agencies like the NED.
For you to say that an economic issue can easily be solved by just crossing the border to work in Shenzhen is an indication of a simple-minded person who doesn't know about reality. If the HK issue is so simple, why doesn't all Malaysians cross over to Singapore to work? Then, there won't be any complaint about the falling ringgit with its weak purchasing power.
