He was the reigning Wotan of the Solti era at Covent Garden, Hans Hotter's first pupil in the role (Donald McIntyre only led the second cast). Ward also sang Wotan at San Franciso, Buenos Aires, Mexico City (three cycles in two weeks) , and elsewhere, and many other roles at Bayreuth, the Met, Frankfurt, the Edinburgh Festival and too many more to list. Born In Scotland, he stood well over two meters tall and was well suited to the Dutchman, having been a sea captain himself.
