  • Cristina Deutekom, despite her somewhat strange (but rather amusing) mannerisms and slight pitch problems offers an effective Norma, with stunning tops (listen to that high D at the end!) and more vocal color than usual. Troyanos is, as always a luscious sounding and sensitive Adalgisa. Recorded live at the San Francisco Opera House 31 October, 1973

I saw Deutekom in person three times: one a concert, the second time singing I PURITANI in Hartford, CT opposite Pierre Duval, third time singing I VESPRI SICILIANI at the Met. She had NO pitch problems. What you are hearing are the unbelievable overtones of that voice. A Philips recording engineer once said that she was the hardest singer he ever recorded; he had to set bafflers up around her to keep the voice from bouncing off the walls and ceiling. In person you heard it all, and she was both on pitch and immensely thrilling (despite her portly frame and lack of acting ability).

the way she sings "Vanne, si, mi lascia indegno!" is just so so wonderful. her voice is so well coordinated, you don't even know when she switches to chest voice until way later, and both registers sound powerful and projected. but above all, i can hear the emotion. she truly sounds angry and assertive, and she delivers it with so much power. i have yet to hear anyone do it better than her.

One could say anything about Deutekom except that she had pitch problems. It is in fact obvious in all her (in-famous) glottal coloratura in how distinctly precise her pitch was and throughout her very well developed registers.
I have never heard her even shake on a high note, up to her Retirement concert and even later on in the masterclass videos.
She was perfectly appoggiata with an iron diaphragm.

Who'd have thought Deutekom the ideal Norma!?! No doubt Troyanos owned the role of Adalgisa ... Tremendous!

Unforgettable voice in the role of Norma.
Amazing duet with Tatiana Troyanos another opera mezzo with her timbre and phrasing when singing their roles.

When one is so generous with aplomb, power, stamina and pure voice as Deutekom, why would you point out something as trivial as "pitch problems" in one or two notes during a live performance? If they wouldn't have been there, it would have been perfect. And nothing is more boring than perfection. I'll take excitement over perfection on any given day.

I saw Deutekom as Norma at the Lyric in Chicago. Rather like Callas, the acoustics of the house softened the somewhat distinctive glottal technique that she used at times in the fioratura. I say this having heard Callas once in her final tour but also having heard recordings in the acoustic of a theater when attending the play "Master Class". In that case as well the theater acoustic changed what is often described as flaws in the voice or strangeness of the technique.
