  • The Pro Formula Mazda is one of the best bang for your buck race cars available today! It is affordable and user-friendly, plus being an open-wheel racer means it has incredible power to weight ratio making for an incredible track car. The Pro Mazda is a spec series car, meaning all the cars have to be identical performance in the series making for incredibly competitive racing. It is powered by a sealed 250 hp fuel-injected Renesis developed 1.3L Mazda 13B Mazda Wankel “rotary” engine (similar to the one in the Mazda RX-8) and mated to a Hewland six-speed sequential trans. Because the engines are sealed, they cannot be modified as they having them sealed makes it easy to detect cheating. Many race cars need a lot of upkeep and maintenance, however on this Mazda the engine and gearbox are extremely reliable, durable and require minimum maintenance. Because the Pro Mazda is a spec car in the Road to Indy series, and in the interest of creating close racing and limiting cost, the rules state that no modifications are allowed unless the rules expressly permit it. At one time even replacing the mirrors on the car was prohibited! The only adjustments allowed are wing angles, spring rates and suspension set-up, but everything else on the car is sealed to make for an even playing field. The Road to Indy series is one of the best platforms to help propel the career of any aspiring racer, and the Pro Mazda cars are very popular as part of IndyCar's Road-to-Indy ladder system. Competing in a field of 40 or more open-wheel cars at a race is quite common. Even if you do not have pro driver aspirations, and just want to race as a hobby, SCCA, NASA and VARA all have classes for open wheel cars, so there are no lack of options for thrilling track days in this spectacular car!

    What an awesome little race car. My first car was a 1973 Mazda Rx4 13b that I Bridgeported. Love rotary’s. Love your explanation to all you show us. Great stuff. Thank you.

    Love the video, learnt so much about the Mazda formula. We have a similar looking Toyota open wheeler here in New Zealand that has been the stepping stone for a few kiwi drivers. Thanks again👍🏾

    Car will start fine using onboard battery. Car will also start with the main switch OFF when the PU is plugged in. PU is used to help keep onboard battery level up since these run a total loss electrical system.

    I blew my RX8 R3 exhaust flange after header and that amount of loud is really concerning.

      Cause that's the fastest n/a rotary engine, and technically the renesis have the best power/reliability (they are reliable, the issue was dealers ship that put synthetic oil in them)

    You can get 10 cars exactly the same there always 1 or 2 thats speical and far better than the rest

    Rotary engines are somewhat fascinating. They are more like a turbine than a piston engine. The bad thing about them is they are notorious for both burning and leaking oil by the barrel. It's kind of funny but many early RX-7 owners carried a case of oil with them because the engines burned it that badly.

      the rotary engine is designed to burn oil, it literally has an oil injection system that forces oil into the intake. Thats how some the internals are lubed just like a 2 cycle engine. I will smoke, and it will consume oil for this reason.
