  • Thank you to everyone for your support and kind words on this project! I never would've thought that it was going to be this cheap and easy of a fix. This truck has been a joy to work on every step of the way. No matter what area of the truck I'm wrenching on; it seems that all it takes is a little general maintenance to get this tuck up and running in tip top shape! Thanks for watching

    This also fixed my truck I was in same situation as you until I watched this I had just replaced the filter filled with atf and it was doing same thing so I went in the garage scratching my head watching videos, truck had been sitting for 3-4 hours with atf in it then I watched this and I wondered, so I went out to the truck fired it up and sure enough no more stalling ! Crazy what a little bit of Bruce Jenner fluid can fix🤣

    I had an old 6.9 IDI that had the same stalling issue. Unfortunately the solution was a new injection pump. It was just plumb worn out. Ran way smoother and stopped stalling once I threw a marine IP in. (Which was the cheapest thing I could find)
    Never solved my hard starting issues though. I think the motor was getting low on compression because it was pumping lots of unburnt fuel out the exhaust when cranking. It would require 3 or 4 cycles of the glow plugs to cold start even when it was summer! It would also struggle to go uphill unloaded unless you dropped the manual trans down to 3rd gear. She was definitely tired.
    Bought the truck for $1000, put $3000 into it. Sold it for $500. I love IDI's :)

    Just to share my experience, my newly purchased 1994 IDI turbo truck has been giving fuel filter alarms, thinking it was clogged I changed it (second filter since buying the truck 3 weeks ago). I continued to get intermittent indications, so I began running less fuel in my tanks in preparation for possibly having to drop my tanks. The issue got worse, by a lot! Today it died coming down a hill, off throttle, at 2100 rpm. After pulling over I tried to burp the filter head, nothing but air. Disconnected the fuel shutoff, and jumped the starter while burping it. Still no fuel. I got under it and discovered the returns from the fuel tank selection valve were capped. When the tow truck arrived we pulled it to level ground after adding fuel and trying to burp with only minor fuel coming from the filter head. We pulled it to level ground and we’re able to then get good fuel flow. I will be taking it in Monday to check the fuel senders to see if the basket strainers have fallen off, and repairing the returns.

    That extra piece on the one injector line is a timing adapter. I am half way through your video, so not sure if you end up doing this. But seems like your metering rod is sticking, so when you let off the throttle the truck dies. To fix it you fill the fuel filter with automatic transmission fluid, or diesel kleen. Start the truck for a minute, shut it off. Let it sit for the night, next day start it up and run it like you stole it. Should lube up the internals of injection pump and break that metering rod loose.

    WOW that was awesome. I have a 94 7.3 IDI and all of a sudden (after running well for years) starts just fine and idols, but I can drive it a bock or two, and all of a sudden it starts crapping out then stalls. I crank and crank and finally, it comes back to life but then may stall after a block or two. I replaced the lift pump and filter but don't know where to go from here. I did notice then changing the filter though it was only half full. Should it be to the top when removing it? If so what is happening? any suggestions? It's the first diesel I've ever had so am stumped.

    • @ydocproductions5593
      @ydocproductions5593  Рік тому +1

      I’m glad the video was helpful to you Johnny. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what could be wrong but the fuel filter should be completely full to the top. Usually if the fuel filter is that low it’s an indicator that the lift pump is too weak and can’t keep up with the trucks fuel demand. However if you’ve already replaced it I would take a serious look into air intrusion. What could be happening is air is leaking into the fuel lines causing the fuel to flow back to the tank instead of getting a steady stream to the lift pump which in turn gives you less fuel into your fuel filter then causing your truck to stall. I don’t know how mechanically inclined you are but below are some things you can replace/test on your truck to pinpoint what could be wrong:
      1. Make sure all your injector return lines are not cracked or leaking fuel.
      2. Also check the fuel hoses coming off your lift pump for any obvious cracks
      3. Another thing that could potentially be wrong is the pickup tube inside the fuel tank itself could be broken and not allowing fuel to run to the lift pump effectively. (However I would only look into it as a last resort).
      4. Check to see if the check valve coming off the top of the injection pump is working properly as well as all the solenoids too. (Be sure to put the top cover back on the right way)
      5. Another in depth test you can do is to take the hose that feeds fuel from the fuel tank to the lift pump and block it off. Get a fuel hose from the auto parts store, stick one end to the lift pump like normal, and the other end into a canister of fresh diesel fuel. Next take the return line coming off the engine and stick it into a empty bucket to see how much fuel would potentially be put back into the tank.
      I hope all of those suggestions made sense and are helpful to you. The good news is that you picked a really simple diesel engine as your first diesel truck. There’s not a whole lot that can go wrong with these engines.
      Also below is a diesel parts and service company that has their own UA-cam channel called Diesel Care and Performance located in Tennessee. You can watch their videos as well as call their helpline. Mr. Billy Williams who has been a diesel tech for decades helped me personally with my truck and I highly recommend you give him a call if you need more help. I’ll link their channel down below. @@ydocproductions5593 My Friend, I am putting you in my automotive HERO files. Not because I have had a chance to attempt your repair suggestions yet but because you are so kind to take the time to list the possibilities that might be causing my problem. Who else would do that? I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate it. I bout this truck a couple of years ago but have had relatively little chance to use it because I thought it was worth restoring. The engine ran like a top and it had a new transmission installed just before I bought it. The interior was much better than average for a truck this old. However it needed a lot of attention on the outside, and I didn't realize that under that bed liner was a rotted bed. So I replaced the bed had all of any dents or scrapes repaired new bright work grill bumpers and lights and finally an awesome paint job in that original green/bluish color The truck looks like new, but since all this was done now she has had this running for a while and deciding to stall out problem which has made me unable to depend on driving it anywhere. I have never been any more than a shade tree mechanic at best and have never ever worked on a diesel. It almost stopped me from buying the.. truck because it was like being in a foreign country when you didn't know the language or culture. I know you guys say what a basic engine this is and it probably is but I have had to depend on youtube to learn anything at all since mechanics in my area won't work in it. They want cars that have a plug-in electronic diagnostic readout to solve the problem then slam a new part on and charge 200 dollars just for the diagnostics. They would have to think and try like you do...and did with your truck. This little 7.3 turbo ran like a dream before this. So thank you so much. I sure wish I knew about the fuel tank possibility before I put the new bed back on it. But it is what it is. Thank you again so much. @@ydocproductions5593 Yes thank you. It is not even close to recognizable from what it used to look like.
      Doing one of these is like painting one room of the house, then it makes the next room look bad then the hallway then the kitchen. It's an addiction that keeps you throwing money at a project.
      My neighbors were sure glad to see the transformation LOL. If it hadn't run so well when I test-drove it I never would have bought it.
      When the bodywork was started on the bed, I said we don't need this plastic liner, so removed it only to find a total disaster of rust from moisture trapped under the liner Just imagine there was already hundreds of work done on the outside. It was so bad I had to replace the bed of the truck. Finding one was like searching for a needle in a hey stack. I was happy to see (once the bed was removed) the frame was almost perfect. No rust at all.
      Most long beds were used for work and were damaged like crazy. The only ones were hundreds of miles away but none of those had duel tank openings. I had to buy the best one I could find and then have my body man create the front fule door opening. He did an unbelievable job. Perfection in my estimation. As you can see these projects can bore a hole in your wallet fast. On the other hand, I don't feel so bad when I see the asking prices for a nice one of these trucks.
      When you suggested I might have to access the fuel tanks, I thought OMG why didn't I go in there and replace everything when the bed was off? Damn, how stupid of me. I didn't because the truck was running perfectly at the time. So if it leads to that I might have to pull the bed off again? I hope not. But that's a possibility.

      I simply bought a quart of Mercon transmission fluid and fully filled up the fuel filter. I let the truck run for about 5 minutes or so to let the transmission fluid fully work though out the pump. Then I let it sit overnight. The detergents and additives in the transmission fluid loosened up the junk keeping the metering valve from moving freely and has worked fantastic ever since. I never drained the transmission fluid out of the fuel filter, I just left it until the truck started running on diesel again. I also put some Stanadyne fuel additive in the fuel tanks to help as well. Hope that answers your question👍

    I have a problem with my F250 IDI keeps stalling out. I have a 1987 F250 6.9. The engine keep stalling out on me for some reason. Starts up great in the cold and runs. When I drive it down the road out of a sudden it starts to stall out sometimes it gets up and goes again and sometimes it just completely dies. And also I'm noticing it kind of revs little high for a second then goes back down when I'm driving down the road don't know if that's part of the same problem or something different. What do you think it could possibly be. I just put a brand new fuel pump, sending unit, fuel filter and a new german-made shut off solenoid.

      @ydocproductions5593  6 місяців тому +1

      Sounds like your on the right track. Definitely sounds fuel related. Those injection pumps are pretty stout, so it being bad probably isn’t the case (did you notice any glittery metallic flake in the injection pump when you replaced the fuel shutoff solenoid?) If you already replaced the fuel pump as well you could be dealing with air intrusion of some sort. As you probably know the fuel return lines are notorious for going bad on these engines.
      Lastly the most probable cause it could be is the metering valve inside your injection pump could be “sticking” not allowing the fuel you need under load. Whether it’s the issue or not I’d highly recommend putting some atf and fuel treatment in the fuel filter and run it through your injection pump (a couple times perhaps ). Usually I’m against those “snake oil” treatments, but it worked for me and fixed my truck.
      I hope that helps. If you need to talk to someone directly I’d highly recommend talking to Billy Williams over at Diesel Care and Performance located in Tennessee. He’s one of those old school mechanics who knows these IDI diesels like the back of his hand. Good luck with your truck and I hope it’s an easy fix!👍

      The previous owner did put brand new tanks so not sure what the old ones look like but everything I took apart so far looks spotless clean inside. The biggest thing is it's not something I can tell it's fixed right away until I'm down the road. The engine runs great starts easy and everything but just all of a sudden the thing just wants to die miles down the road. You don't think it's no sensor or something like oil pressure anything like that?

    • @ydocproductions5593
      @ydocproductions5593  6 місяців тому +1

      @@ruffrupp5453 It’s possible it’s a bad sensor but these are such dinosaurs that it’s more than likely a condition where it’s not keeping up with fuel supply (in your case while it’s under a load). It’s a long shot but is it possible that the fuel pickup tube could be faulty/cracked, or old cracked fuel lines running along the frame allowing air intrusion and causing diesel to draining back to the tank?
      If you have time to experiment you could run an auxiliary fuel tank with a 5 gallon fuel tank somehow attached to the vehicle. Just run the feed line off the mechanical fuel pump and stick it inside the fuel can and see if your problem persists. It would be a good idea to run the return line in the same can as well to see how well your return system is working too. Simply process of elimination

      @@ydocproductions5593 ok thanks. I think I'll try the running hydraulic fluid instead of ATF in the fuel filter first that doesn't work I might try a auxiliary tank. Going to try hydraulic fluid instead of ATF because I don't have any ATF on hand and have brand new hydraulic fluid. I might thin it down a little bit with diesel fuel to water it down a little bit.

      The truck is a 1988, and yes I filled the fuel filter all the way with atf (I believe the fuel filter can hold 17oz total). I let that run through the injection pump for roughly 5 min. That way the additives and detergents can fully move throughout the pump. I let that sit overnight and it worked great for me👍. Hope that answers your question. Good luck
