- Unreal Tournament 2004 is a staple of mine. I played it as a younger kid in Middle school and throughout high school. I want everyone to play this game, BUT YOU CAN'T. It's a shame, but because this all time class is spectacular and will never be duplicated. In this video, I want be showing off the game in all it's glory, why it's amazing, why you want it, and how it survives the test of time.
KevPez is a gamer whose grown up. His relationship with gaming has changed drastically. He was unsure about his play habits and games of choice, but now it's embraced! Join KevPez as he goes through games from his past, some good, some not, but all important in some way.
Lots of comments and views in this video. Thanks to each and everyone of you! I’m new to making UA-cam videos so to see everybody here is shocking and kind of flattering. I’ve seen lots of comments about playing unreal tournament 99. I actually do have the game, I just haven’t put much time into it. I’m gonna give it a shot and maybe I’ll do a follow up video!
Here's an idea, stop with the misinformation. UT2004 is still available to play, and no one calls it a "boomer shooter". It's just a game that is still able to be played and is not new. I didn't watch your video in full and I definitely disliked it for the incorrect statements. Have a good day.
@ l’ll assume you stopped watching before I showed GOG and Steam not offering the games as well as a statement from Epic games? I also heavily hinted at archive.org having it, you would know if you watched the whole thing 😉
@@KevPez-IS Private servers, physical copies, cd key generators, various online stores, amazon, ebay. 0:14 "You can't" though I've just proven you can. You really wanna do this?
@@KevPez-IS But they right though. 20 seconds in, video is false. Title is false. I just saw it listed on an online store.
I mean from every source I can see, including Epic themselves, all the games are delisted. You can get some Unreal games from oldunreal and archive.org. They are not for sale on Steam, GOG, or Epic. Not from what I can see
Not allowed to buy - allowed to download👍👍👍
Encouraged to do so and advocate for games preservation. How people are supposed to learn about game design if not by seeing it evolving? Whatever big companies think, lootboxes are not the end of history.
@@MrTaekon That's the point, isn't it? If you could see what "old" game design was about, it would become rather obvious how badly things have turned out in the "AAA" world :D
The truth is, PCs were what changed gaming (not just _IBM_ PCs, of course). Arcades had the same awful incentives as modern lootbox-laden garbage (though they also had one thing that's largely missing from today's examples - free competition). Home computers were the thing that put the customer in control, for a time. It's not a coincidence that the more those big corporations push "you don't own this anymore", the worse the product (and customer treatment) gets. The moment Battlefield 3 wasn't selling to suit satisfaction, they shutdown all the Battlefield 2 servers... and you had no recourse. The endless "fight against piracy" gave the suits all the power they needed to screw everyone over (what does this remind us of, eh?).
Who buys games anymore😅😅😅😅😅
@@Mike-xw4gm Who owns games anymore 😅😅😅😅😅 forced online, service shut down, you only borrow them with a digital licence. But people are still buying Triple Ass games for 70+ bucks, *cough a digital rental licence for 70+ bucks. It's good to be an old fart, you know so many good old games, you don't need modern recycled dull BS games (ofc there are still some new gems coming out, yet, very rare compared to the sh1tload of "games", eh tech demos with a fassade of gameplay).
@@LuaanTi Underrated comment of the century lol. I agree with you. I basically almost exclusively play older games at this point. Older games are generally way better than modern ones. For the most part the only "modern" games I play are high-quality remakes or sequels to older titles (e.g. Resident Evil 2 remake). Even when modern games are "good" they can often just feel so generic and just... blah.
We were playing the golden age of video games without even knowing. Not gonna lie, as a kid i thought it would get better and better but it definitely did not.
I am thankful for having these games available while growing up. UT and other games from those times were absolutely fantastic and will never get old.
Awesome video and ty for sharing !
Thanks for watching and the kind words 🙏
It quickly became clear that "AAA" isn't where the future of fun or interesting gaming is. Who could have thought that putting money above everything could possible be a bad thing for your customers?
But hey, the indie and "AA" scene is live and kicking, and better than ever. Let's not forget that games like Doom _were_ the indies of their time. Corpos usually only manage to milk a good team they take over for a release or two :D
@ yup, we gotta support our indie devs!
mid 90s till mid 00s was a golden time for PC players, especially the FPS genre, IMO it all ended with XBOX360, microsoft took too much of the pc and made it lame console crap, that btw ruined epic as well.
And our Indie CONTENT CREATORS! The old guard has gotten too big and too phat. 🤑
What I love of old UT is it's simplicity and how "open" it is, for a closed-source game. You don't need an account anywhere, you don't need a season pass, you don't need to buy anything else other than the game (back when it was actually on stores), you just start the game, go online, join the first server you find that is populated and doesn't have a high ping, and join the carnage. I used to play DM and CTF for the most part. DM basically like hunting. You frag what you can, you get fragged, and you're instantly up and running again in the blink of an eye, no respawn timers, no last man standing, no loadouts, no nothing. Just run around, pick up what you can find, and frag all you can. It was the simplest thing and it was fun.
I actually went through my storage unit last night to look for something and I stumbled on a CD of UT classic, so I’m gonna install it maybe on Sunday
Zoomers forgot what real gaming is, we ned to remind them
@@gendalfgray7889 Yes please put your games in the thrift to remind me itd be such a lesson >:)
bro, every PC game used to be like this.
The reason they are not like this anymore? Consoles.
@@LucasCunhaRocha that’s a fair point.
Rocket League's origin actually started on Unreal Tournament 2004 by the way. The developer was working on a mode for the game and was testing out vehicles. When someone just put a ball in the arena though, they had an "A-HA" moment. They then went on to make Super Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars, and then Rocket League.
That’s true, but I didn’t wanna mention it and feel like I’m ripping off LGR more then I already am lol
Some of the Rocket League game files are still named with what they were in UT2004's version of the source code.
@@Thalanox oh really? That’s awesome
Finnaly someone knows this!! And also i remmeber playing on UT99 on foot and using impact hammers to push the ball and was really cool ... you had powerups to run super fast and many stuff i don't remmeber but was really cool...
No ... Psyonix made "VehicleMod" in UT 2003 because they felt that it was lacking vehilces. They later were hired to make the ONSLAUGHT game mode in UT 2004. Eventually that lead to "Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars" and THEN they made Rocket League ... and so greedy that they sold their souls on it.
UT2004 is years of my childhood, what a classic
100% agreed. I’ve been getting lots of comments about UT 99 being even better, so I might stream it soon and give it a shot.
UT99 is great and the boomer UT of choice, what with it being closer to quake, but man, there's just something about 04 that does it for me. Glad I still have a steam copy and a cd copy from the before times
@@daeamiralis Quake 3 Arena was friggin' rad. The prequel to UT2004, lol.
UT2004 was a decentralized multiplayer single player game, all inclusive. Epic just doesn’t want this to compete with its newer offerings. Sad.
Very well spoken
"If they play the old gold, they won't buy the new SLOP!" -Tim Sweeny
Multiplayer was decentralized back in the day
It's not that modern game development can't be as good as the old was, it DOESN'T WANT to. It wants to exploit the players, and monetise everything as much as possible.
My favorite shooter of all time. Especially with the vehicle frags and anti-grav maps.
I hate antigrav maps, you are sitting duck while dangling in the air
@ I was extremely good at the antigravity maps with one-shot-kill. Some of the maps had good hidden ceiling crevices for sniping. Honestly though, transporter kills were the funnest part of UT2K3/2K4. None of these new games really give you that same transporter puck shooter experience from what I’ve experienced.
Great to see some love for UT04. My heart lies with UT99, my first love. Onslaught, the vechiles, and that fkin space map... UT04 is the better game.
also FK epic.
I also love 99, but I played 2004 first so it has my heart
Absolutely
i enjoyed 99 WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more than ut2004. but i think 2004 aged more gracefully. 99 was balanced to play with 200 ping and now that everyone has like no ping, every freaking weapon is completely broken and imbalanced. but i think the best game in the series is unreal championship 2. a goddamn shame it's never seen a re-release on pc. seriously, if you can, give this game a whirl. to me it's better than 2004 in almost every way.
@@GraveUypo absolutely would love to see UC2 be re-released
This is why digital stores will not preserve games.
Correct. Thank goodness for archive.org so these games can be downloaded for now.
Holy shit, this game isn't just a game, it's a fucking divine creation! It's like God himself took a break from chilling in heaven to craft this masterpiece. Every pixel feels like a prayer, every level a testament to divine genius. If you haven't played it yet, you're missing out on what might be the closest thing to experiencing the touch of the Almighty. Praise be to the developers, for they have shown us the light!
And you say this before seeing custom maps. I wonder what'll you then.
The vibe from ONS-Dria was one of a kind
oh boy, thats cool seeing this game over 15-20years! I used to play original unreal tournament and 2004 a TON back when i was like 10y old.
You are not allowed to buy it, but nothing stops you from plaing it. the GOG version of UT04 has no DRM check and if you dont plan to play onj official servers, if there are still some I dont know, as UT is best played with friends on LAN. You dont need the CDKey for anything other than installation (that will just add regKEY into registry). You can literally turn off "authentification" for your server so anyone with correct UT04 version can join in and the game will just ignore any generated CD keys that were used for installation.
Get the GOG version > install > Enjoy the UT04
Yep. I’ve been playing the Steam version, but somebody can always just download the game off archive.org, change your server in the INI and it’s back online. Thanks Duke 🫡
Crazy how such an old game that runs on such basic HW - is actually so fun. New games requiring expensive HW are bloated for no reason, while being less fun and full of problems. We are moving in the wrong direction.
And publishers removing these old games almost looks like they want us to forget how good the old things were, and how good they can be, so they can keep selling the new lazy products.
My friends and I played this for 2 years back in high-school. It was the only multiplayer shooter I ever felt the need to play, as Call of Duty and all the rest that came after felt slow, grey, and stale in comparison. RIP UT2004
At least there are still methods to acquire the game, and we’re still able to play it thankfully.
Since the game can’t be purchased, and it’s up to people to acquire it… It would be fun to get some people online and play some matches on fan servers
@@KevPez-IS Nanotech Studios hosts matches for UT GOTY every weekend, and DOSGamert hosts for UT2004 occasionally.
I used to make maps for this game... Now, I'm making my own game!
Oh man that’s awesome! Do you have any videos or anything to show?
There's nothing more iconic from my childhood than playing UT - Facing Worlds CTF mode and rushing to grab the Redeemer so I can hear "mmmmmmmmmmmonster kill kill killlll..." The golden age indeed.
The game also has a music player built in. Unreal Tournament 2004 is the greatest first person shooter of all-time. FPS games today don't hold a candle to it.
Happy to see UT2004 being appreciated and recognized as the GOAT
I’m glad to see others feel the same way I do!
Thank you UT, for flunking me in college
I can’t thank UT for that I failed for other reasons lol
My fav game! I took the part in its offline tournament when the game was freshly out. Thank you for mentioning the great music there! I still enjoy relistening to it!
Music is so underrated in games, I’m glad you also love it! And Thanks for watching!
I'm a hardcore fan of UT99, but UT2k4 was my brothers absolute favorite of the series so we always had a blast setting LAN matches up in our neighborhood. Thank goodness I still have my anthology CD set for the series.
I’m working on a new video about UT99, it’s awesome, I see why everyone loves it
This game was my childhood. I miss playing that those days. Thanks for you video❤
Thanks for watching!
I too Love UT2004. It's my Favorite PC Game
I got it for Christmas of 2004 and I’ve played it since..man I’m old.
Still having ut99, 2004 and ut3 on my PC and playing it sometimes offline. Never gets old and the Graphics are still fine, even over 20 years later (yes UT99 not but thats even older). It´s simple, its Fun, it´s awesome
99 looks fantastic for its time! UT3 also looks really good technically, it just needs more color to pop out. I know there’s a some mods for that
@KevPez-IS yeah for its time it was awesome, but with modern screens and high Resolution it looks a bit dated... Still a great game tho. UT3 need more Colour thats true its all so dark. 2004 is just perfect
I only had UT2003 but oh boy was that fun! Especially when I began to play on servers. There were those fantastic community made maps, a beer brewery, some urban areas, these maps where you are super tiny or just some totally weird maps. There was melee combat. I loved it so much!
I never played Ut2003 on PC, but I had Unreal Championship for Xbox which was a port of 2003, just simplified. Still lots of fun
Literally the game that got me into PC gaming properly. Downloaded the demo and played on that one available map for hours and hours. Fascinated at how high I could get the framerate. Great times.
If its the same demo I played, it was on Rankin
Thank you for remembering my favourite videogame series. Personally, I prefer UT99, the unyelding classic (try it out!) and UT3 (great feel and core gameplay, also MODS), but we played UT2004 about three or two years - me and my friends had matches every tuesday and sunday. We played so much awesome games for ten years - UT series, Halo Custom Edition, Quake 3 Arena, FlatOut 2, Assault Cube, Babo Violent, Battlefield series, Split/Second (which is delisted too). That was some of my most cherished moments, because it was fun.
Thanks for watching and sharing your memories!
i was there...
hanging on teamspeak with our clan till morning came, 1v1 cups on mIRC,clanbase matches,TAM,trial maps.watching pro matches on utv with shoutcast from winamp...
jeez im old.
The upsetting realization that Halo 2, Half Life 2, Doom 3, Ut2004, GTA San Andreas are all now over 20 years old. I feel the wrinkles forming as I type this.
I have very fond memories from my childhood on UT2004 (and UT2003 also). My father was a computer geek and often found himself in an internet café.
He had a friend there who provided him with a DVD that had both UT2003 and UT2004 demos on it.
Needless to say, I was totally hooked. Every Christmas I was begging him to buy a full game for me, until he broke and on Christmas 2007 I got UT2004 full game.
Great video!
I've been playing since I was a kid. I used to see my dad and my uncle play against each other (my uncle on my pc, and my dad on his) anytime my uncle would come over.
Being the nosy and curious kid I was, I eventually figured out the shortcuts to UT2003 and UT2004 on my pc and it sorta just took off from there.
The biggest factor for me though was Onslaught. At my babysitters we would play splitscreen halo on her Xbox and I was always amazed by the maps that had vehicles in them- it was a crazy concept back then for me. Imagine my surprise when I find out that UT2004 has cars n guns + none of the need to have any friends thanks to bots XD
So many years spent playing 2003 and 2004 and even still to this day when I drop by my parents place I'll take my XP laptop and play against my dad.
That’s an awesome story! Love to hear about everyone’s memories of the UT games.
ahh, the good days of UT2004, Red Faction and Command & Conquer Renegade
For me it was UT2004, Rainbow Six 3, Rise of Nations and Civ 4, good times
Still have my physical copy somewhere, and a digital copy on Steam. Best game ever.
Nice, great comment, awesome to see the MiASMA server at 05:28 (which has still a lot of players).
It was a blast when I was on there!
I played 10’s of hours playing ALONE on empty maps and it was a blast. I was imagining other players, still had no internet at that time. I was like 10y old and game was amazing with imagination xdxd
Man I’m glad I bought it from GOG when I did. It was one of my early purchases. Sad it is no more.
I can't believe it was delisted from GOG! It's a shame they took it away.
Hey if Epic doesn't want my money that's fine... won't stop me from playing it.
Your absolutely right. Unreal Tournament 2004 is ABSOLUTELY one of the best games ever made. I had an absolute blast when I recently played it for my review. All in all this was an awesome video and more people need to see it. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for the kind words!
Glad I still have my CD of 99 and 2004
I have the boxed copy of 04, only the jewel case for 99 but at least I have it in some form
2 days aho i talked about this game, now this video pops up. They are listening.
Anyway, i loved this game to bits and never ended up exploring all maps because there were that many. I hope epic has a change of heart
It appears I’ve invaded your thoughts. Seriously though thanks for watching!
Back in the day they killed UT4 for Fortnite, what makes you think they will have a change of heart? As much as I love Unreal I don't see a bright future for the franchise as long as it's under Epic, unless someone will be brave enough to buy it from this company that became the living definition of greed
I miss this game so much. As a kid I think I played the demo for like 2 years until I finally bought the game for $20 at Gamestop. I remember being blown away by how much more content was in the game. I think the monster killing mode was one of my faves.
Oh dude I COMPLETELY forgot about Invasion! I think I remember playing it on instagib and still not being able to finish it when I was little. 😂
I fucking miss arena shooters. My god, Unreal Tournament is one the best ones.
I enjoy some modern shooters too, but man nothing is better than waking up on the weekend to some UT. Well, I guess coffee works well also
Played this game as a kid, but forgot the name. Now i remember it all. Thank you for good memories.
Shame you aren't allowed to buy it anymore.
I’m glad to help! You can still get the game through other methods, I just wish you could still buy it
I played so much unreal 2k4 when I was younger. Great video.
Thank you 🙏
I had this game and played with 4 friends at the time.
We didnt know how good we had it, our little TNG clan.
My favorite game of all time, my dad got me a disc copy at half priced books years ago and I would play it endlessly
I used to absolutely be addicted to this game! Does anyone remember some of the MODS you could download? Helium gun that would make you float before your head exploded. Nuke launcher that you could ride. Fart gun.. so many weapons. Also downloaded the additional gore and Instagib mod too. Loved this game so much. Hours of fun.
Tons of mods, i love the modding community
My two favorite weapon mods will always be Chaos UT, and Ballistic Weapons.
Chaos, for adding an incredible 3rd person melee mode that even most modern games can't compete with. Plus the adorable little proxy bombs that taunt you as they chase you.
Ballistic Weapons for adding a massive arsenal of more realistic style guns, and entirely new mechanics to go along with them. It gives you everything from modern style ARs, DMRs, and shotguns, to sci-fi plasma rifles and railguns, and even a pair of magic staves. Plus a million customization options, so you could slow the game down to play more like CoD, or leave everything at the usual over the top UT maneuverability. Plus, Ballistic Weapons was made by Runestorm, who went on to create the Viscera Cleanup games.
And the best part is that, you can use the weapon replacer mutator to take any individual weapon from any of those mods, and stick it into the base game! Want to replace the standard Lightning Gun with the giant railgun from Ballistic Weapons? You can! Want to replace the Shield Gun with one of the swords from Chaos UT? You can do that too!
@@doomspud6302 I never tried the chaos mod but I’ll have to give that a go.
@@doomspud6302 ahh I loved them both. Did you ever play the included overhaul 'frag ops'? It was CS in the unreal engine and it was beautiful for gunplay. I would personally take ALL of these weapons, boot up a sonicrpg server and play with the added special class abilities/inventory/items in invasion mode. I will assume not many people remember the sonicrpg servers however :P
In UT99 I would use the MoreGore mutator so it would cause a single headshot to spawn multiple heads. Crashed my old pentium 3 rig lol.
I'm glad I own this game and can play it online again. It runs perfect on Linux :)
I’m hoping to turn my old PC into a Linux system, absolutely will have to have UT running!
@@KevPez-IS The only thing I couldn't fix was the no sound bug in linux. But everything worked perfectly and you can tweak some of the graphical settings. It's sad that Open GL was never used again.

This brings back some memories. Such a great game, My favorite was unreal championship 2: The Liandri Conflict
I've been replaying UC2 recently, it's great stuff. Might cover that soon actually. It's backwards compatible on Xbox Series X, runs great

Best Game from my childhood. This game was the predecessor to games like Overwatch ( one of their diverse modes ) and other unique shooters. Best shit
unreal tournament is legitimately the best multiplayer shooter i've ever experienced. Nothing has been better, nothing has surpassed it.
UT2004 is an all-time classic. We are looking to build on the legacy of these amazing games with Open Tournament! By gamers, and for gamers.
If that means an open source engine to run the games with, looks like we'll be needing it!
Cheers to that! First time I’m hearing about this, this is awesome!
@@OpenTournament this is a whole new game?
@KevPez-IS OT is an entirely new game developed from scratch in UE5. We're still in active development but the goal is to be able to recreate all the awesome things from UT, Quake, and some of these other seminal FPS games.
@@OpenTournament that’s awesome! I’m not a programmer, more of a video and audio guy but if you need help with some voice over stuff or videos, I’m down to help in some way
My UT2004 was modded with massive alot of weapons and crazy models AND mutations and a hell of alot of maps and goodies...
DAMN LOVED IT !!!...
UT 1 was also modded the same way... AWESOME AS WELL !!!....
OWN ALL ON STEAM !...
Its been a long time since I played a shooter. When it comes to shooters, I basically only binge classic games at this point. This is next on my radar. Already own it thankfully but god this series is underrated. My problem was Quake overshadowed UT for me, so this has been one of those gems that I played a little but never got to get "deep" into it as much as it deserved.
Arena shooters are like one of the most underrated game genres. I basically moved on from primarily playing shooting games (I binge one here and there), but bro, the experiences I've had in classic FPS games... these games are LEGENDARY. I didn't even grow up playing these kinds of games, I got into them longer after they were considered "irrelevant" (like I got hardcore into them when Call of Duty Black Ops 2 was what most people played). If you really appreciate interesting game design and you're not one of those "casual gamer" scrubs, you have to find a crowd and get deep into ONE of these games... whether its Quake, UT, ro something similar. Sadly because these games aren't as "big" anymore, younger people miss out on them. I was lucky that I was one of those "explorer"-type gamers where I'd deliberately play things outside of what was mainstream, otherwise I never would've encountered these gems
Exactly why I wish these games were still on steam. These games can still be acquired elsewhere through other methods, but if it’s on steam, it’s just easier to get.
@@KevPez-IS Thankfully with older and defunct games, people always find a way. The gaming community is way more powerful and technologically adept than they used to be. Nowadays no game "stays dead" unless the people give up on them. You heard of lawbreakers, that hero shooter that Cliffy B made that didn't sell well and got permanently shut down? People are even reviving that and I find it crazy because that was a case where it definitely seemed like there was no hope
It's funny because we live in an era where corporations are "shutting down" games more than ever but fans are always becoming more powerful and thus the games are becoming easier and more available to play. The only thing that really has to be done is introduce people to these games so people are still getting into them and playing them... which is also much easier today because of how bad AAA games have become. I think eventually we'll see some small community revivals of "dead games" like these, which is what I'm looking forward to
Some of the older students at school booked out the computer rooms for a charity day event that the school did every year and they had unreal 2004 as one of the options to play. They put it in the school files so it was on every PC in the computer room but it was also all across the school and they left it on there, so every PC in our school had Unreal Tournament to play, the 2004 version and the 2000 version I think. Lots of fun was had with that and lots of arguing about who got to fly the raptors first
Amazing stuff one of the best videos I've seen in a long time
I felt like starting with complete madness was a good calm way to begin.
Just a quick note that steam will honor any pre existing keys, if you found a site selling them, that's how I got my copy when I realized it was no longer being sold.
I'm still mad they never finished Unreal Tournament 4. It was my favorite arena shooter even though it was never finished.
Kinda just wanna give a shoutout to Necto Ulin here, he has remade every Unreal Tournament 99/03/04 song and gotten lots of attention and comments from the original composers even, and I feel a lot of UT vets dont know he even exists.
The music is very good ! Unstoppable ! ( voice acting is amazing ) and AI is very good ! ( zan in 1st game is the best fps AI in game history ).
UT2k4 at its prime was some of the best gaming moments I've ever had.
Games like UT04 are a testament to how important it is to allow private server hosting and provide good modding tools to the community.
Imagine where we'd be if teams like id or EPIC sat back and said "nah, you don't NEED more than a basic level editor" or people like Valve just refused to provide an SDK for any of their games.
Imagine you woke up tomorrow and found out you couldn't play something like counterstrike 1.6 anymore because valve just didn't want to support it anymore.
That's what it's gonna be for a lot of people playing more recent titles 10 years from now, probably not even that long.
this video is going to get 100k !!!!!
I’m very happy with 6.3, this is wild !
As a guy who makes mods for Doom 3, Call of Duty, and Halo, these are the games I grew up with. I was born in the early 2000's, so I wasn't familiar with Quake or Unreal Tournament until my adult years now. I have to say that I'm not a fan of some things about boomer shooters and their multiplayer design, but I respect that these games are the predecessors of the games I play now. They paved the way for future games with their technological advancedments and gameplay ideas. I'm still aspiring to make my own game one day.
You’ll get there one day! One of my goals is to become a better songwriter, and write music for a video
Game
Man such a classic. Shame 3 wasn't quite as good but these games will always hold a special place in my hesrt
I was also playing 3 recently. I think the gameplay is fantastic, but the colors are so washed out and drab. Big thing for me is the music and overall sound design. It didn’t have the excitement or lunch that 2004 does
@@KevPez-IS i think the color scheme is fine, it kind of matches up with many other games, a washed out grayscale and less saturated colors. Game looks fantastic for its time, you could probably claim it was released as late as 2018. It was just "not the same vibe" for me to enjoy it as much i think
@@Fearstrike10500 Yeah thats a good way to put it. I did play it earlier today and I wasn't bothered by how it looks at all. The music bugs me. It's fine but its just..there. The grunts and taunts aren't as fun either
UT3's main problem is that it was unfinished. The publisher, Midway, was going bankrupt from a long line of terrible business decisions at the time. So they forced Epic to shove UT3 out the door too early, so they could hopefully get some sort of profit from something before the company completely died.
The PC version suffered the most, because its basically just a quick and dirty port of the console versions. That's why the menu has so many missing features compared to the previous games, and barely even registers mouse inputs properly. They did fix things up a little bit about a year later, when the released the "Black" version of the game. But the game is still full of problems.
You can tell they had much bigger plans for most of the game's systems. Like how there are so many more voice lines relating to various gameplay objectives and things than in previous games. But most of the character voice packs use the same set of default sound clips from a different voice actor for those extra lines. That's why, if you have Necris bot on your team, you'll hear the default Iron Guard voice when they spot an enemy. Its obvious they wanted to record more voice lines for each character, but didn't have the time. So now its stuck unfinished, forever.
And they could have revived the legacy of the series with UT4. But their greed for Fortnite's infinite profits killed that possibility so hard that it also tried to kill every other Unreal game as well.
i still have this game on my steam library also i have a physical copy of this game (it includes 6 cd btw) and i never played multiplayer on this game. i have more than 300 hours but i only played against bots and even if you play against bots the game is really fun and soundtrack is just awesome.
i didn't even know you can't get it via legal ways anymore, its sad new generations cannot experience this masterpiece.
Oldunreal.com and archive.org have most of the games I believe. It’s just a shame they arent easily available on Steam or GOG.
UT2004 is so good, it ruined every multiplayer shooter that I've played since. Even the newer games I do enjoy, like Titanfall or Overwatch, will always exist under the shadow of Unreal Tournament. The guns aren't as cool, the maps aren't as fun, the balance is terrible, the music is boring or nonexistent, and most of the game is locked behind pointless grinding and paywalls. And its all because of two nasty little words: live service.
The entire reason Unreal Tournament can't be killed, no matter how hard Epic tries, is because it was never "live" in the first place. Combine that with the unending love it still gets from the community, and it has become immortal. And I can't think of a more deserving game to be immortal. Because it is the epitome of gaming in an era where quality, and customer satisfaction, were all that mattered. Unlike now, when bigger profits and investor satisfaction is the only priority.
Well spoken, I’m glad to see other people feel the way I do
My first game on PC, and i still play On-line (ty community for master-server)
Yup. I still play UT 2004 from time to time. Btw. Balistic weapons are great to use.
2K4 had some fantastic ideas... but UT99 actually still holds up better; the simpler visual style has aged better, the UI aged better too for that matter (the 2K4 UI was ugly even at the time, let's be honest - and I say this as a massive fan), the difference in character scaling relative to the environment means that UT99 feels faster, more sharp and responsive, the weapon balance was tighter, the weapon designs and sound effects were more on point... in fact in general, the audio feedback and general soundscape was much clearer and more distinctive...
Oh, and the 600+ DM maps I currently have in my UT99 install (after careful selection, mind you) proves that the mapping scene for UT99 was far stronger, partly owing to the fact that the focus on level flow and raw geometry instead of cluttered prefab usage meant that it was easier to get into mapping for UT99.
Added bonus - UT99 has better fan support to this day, and while Epic removed it from every store, you can easily acquire it and patch it up for modern systems.
Oh, additional added bonus - the original UT is compatible with original Unreal 1 content, to the extent that you can literally load up Unreal 1 maps in UT99 and all the Unreal 1 enemies are supported, and all the weapons are replaced. This also meant that you could easily port any fan-made content for Unreal 1 to UT99.
My first UT game was2004 so my bias for 2004 is huge, but I really want to give more time to 99
For me, UT2004 is the best entry in the series. Every Unreal game is great though. Except Unreal 2 The Awakening.
I used to play UT2004 on a really cheap Acer laptop. It just barely ran half the time, fluctuating between 50fps and 15fps lol it even struggled with Quake 2. Admittedly though that little monster had a good crack at running pretty much everything without overheating.
I have an old desktop with an AMD Athlon processor, and a 9200 SE graphics card lol. It wasn’t great, but it was enough for unreal.
@KevPez-IS good times, I think UT will make a comeback like it's brand new after the Fortnite crowd want something different but similar and more gritty.
Pentium 3, GeForce 2 gts
Love this man
I did not notice you couldnt buy anymore until I saw this video. The heck!? xD Im glad I bought them long ago out of nostalgia in a steam sale, because if not I would be extremly pissed about this.
They won't let you buy it anymore because it's SO good, we as gamers would demand higher standards in our modern videogames again. "If they keep playing the old gold, they won't buy the new slop!" 😩
One thing I don't hear talked about enough is that this game literally provided you with content that taught you how to make mods for it. It wanted you to make your own shit for this game, that is something that is just about unheard of now
Wow, i actually have it with all the fancy books and cardboard case. So much disks though to download through. So much mods i saved on the cds 💿 Thanks for the nostalgia trip. 👨🚀 ☕️
I glad I was able to help stir some memories for you!
I have 3 copies of this game 😂
Original multi-CD, then once I saw the DVD version released, bought it. Then a few years ago, bought the UT bundle on Steam.
I always liked UT more than Quake, but they both have their place.
I do have a craving for some Quake III Arena right now
@KevPez-IS 🚀🚀🚀
I had to double take on seeing the thumbnail, I had no idea they delisted UT2004 and 99! What even happened to Epic, talk about a fall from grace. I don't like Valve, but at least they remember where they came from and treat their legacy titles with respect (so they should).
At least Half Life is still available for purchase!
Open source, crowd-funded fps/engine that can never be taken away
Played this recently on my xp machine. Still goes hard
I played the hell out of this from a Game Informers Demo Disc on a the family compaq computer... was so fun.
these type of videos makes me happy, UT franchise deserves more attention! Unfortunate the servers available is filled with bloatware or has non-vanilla mods.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. The few online matches I played on fan servers were a blast personally, but definitely non-vanilla for sure.
I was thinking of buying this just to play the original killing floor mod on it. Can't anymore
Well you can always to go Archive.org, UT2004 is up there. Can’t buy it, but someone put it up for preservation
Every one in the arena shall be equal
Removing the master server was just stupid. They didn't need to do that. The bandwitdh required for that list of servers is probaly like 2 mb a day. CPU ramwise you could run on a pentium II. There really isn't a reason for them to remove it.
Exactly! I’m sure all the cash they get from Fortnite and Tencent could cover the costs of a Windows XP desktop sitting in a broom closet lol
UT2k4 was my first proper love. Went pro in 1v1, had a blast of a time. My start in eSports.
Much respect! I never got that good at the game, but always had a blast
My favorite Unreal game for the Nostalgic factor is still the original Unreal Tournament. Facing Worlds is the epitome of a CTF map.
thanks for putting light on one of the greatest fps of all time. UT99 and UT2K4 will sadly most likely be forgotten to time, at least you and some othrs are trying to stop that
I appreciate the kind words. My goal is to show off the game to people that maybe haven't seen the games before. Thankfully, UT99 is available on oldunreal.com. 2K4 is on archive.org.
Man, I still log on to play VCTF! I still have the box and the multiple discs it came with. You won't find anything like it nowadays. The best $49.99 I've spent on a game, INSANE value.
Exactly! Theres so much content and it never gets stale
Unreal doesn't even care about UT anymore, but tbh I forget the could make a good game now tbh
Yeah, the series is dead in terms of being relevant for sales. I just adore the games, I hope others are willing to try them
@@KevPez-IS It's a shame, but I guess the game will live on despite it's delisting by Epic
@ Im doing my part to make it go on!
GOATed. The demo alone with just rankin was better than most AAA shooter games today lol
That demo blew my mind, I played fit for months until Christmas
@KevPez-IS same, I remember I got it from Best Buy when I preordered the game and loaned it to all my friends to install because I don't think it required the disk afterwards.
Core memories thanks to this game, great video!
@ I appreciate the kind words!
I was just talking about this game. I sold my copies again. I just cant play mouse and keyboard anymore with out hand cramps. I enjoy the xbox controller. but man the nostalgia. I was always a Quake Kid but I sunk hours into UT2004
I haven’t tried it, but I wonder how this would work on a steam deck?
I got a new PC in 2003 when I was 13 and I bought UT2003 for it. Had lots of fun against bots as we didn't have a broadband internet yet. I'm a bit sad that I have totally missed UT2k4 online, it would have definitely been a game for my taste
Peak era of multiplayer shooter, where only skill decided!
nothing beats the shock rifle combo
red orchestra and killing floor both came from unreal tournament 2004. still have my discs and GOG installers. played it recently it is still FUN. absolute kino game in every way, OST is amazing too.
Fantastic stuff
Been playing it since it came out, so nope, I haven't missed it. :)
I spent a ton of time on UT and UT 2004;still have the discs too!
im so happy I have this on steam and gog
Glad to hear it! Oldunreal.com has UT99, as well as Unreal 1/2.
Nothing like UT2004 Invasion RPG, amazing stuff, shame it is basically dead these days. I'll never forget Unreal Insanity, Rosebum and Death Warrant. Also met a player called Anubis which is fitting, because this guy was a god in his server, everyone would watch when this man decided to unleash 50 redeemers in a row, the man could survive a Titan rock to the face.
Man, Invasion RPG's were absolute chaos in terms of the rulesets, weapons, and creature mods they had, and i loved every single second of it.
Hell even idling on DM-Flux2 with Sentinel Turrets under the map was fun.
