I used your boiling water method a few years ago, when starting all of my plants from seed for the first time. Covered with foil until cool, started seeds, and never had any problems. You're an excellent garden mentor. Thank you.

Now I’m in my 3rd year gardening and absolutely add boiling water to Seed starting mix. Those buggers can make life hell. Also add cinnamon over the soil surface before seeds germinate. It makes a big difference, especially if you are growing in a damp basement! ✌🏽

I boiled the biggest pot of water in my house and added 1 coco coir brick and it created the nicest seed starting medium. Just gonna fertilize after 10-12 days and maybe pot them up as they get true leaves and then into the garden February 1st zone 10a!

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I would love to purchase some of your seeds however Customs here in Australia are very strict and nobody is allowed to import any live plants 🌱 including seeds! Disappointing in one way, but not worth the risk to our unique environment here. 🐨🦘🦜🌴
My grampa use to do this over open fire in a metal bucket. He just reused his garden soil but they didn't have a lot of money and he recycled whenever he could. He said this sterilized the soil for the seeds. So I absolutely loved seeing this video you posted. Thank you!

I have used your boiling method for the last 3 years and have definitely noticed an improvement in germination. It is 100% worth the effort. Hadn't thought about the bucket you are using but will be adding that to my seed starting tools for sure. I didn't know that so many of the seeds I start needed cold stratification. That was great new information. Your efforts to educate are always appreciated and a blessing to me.

Great video Gary, thanks. Explains why my Spearmint was a let down last season. Would you recommend stratification for other herbs such as Basil, Majoram, Cilantro or Fenugreek? And what about Lettuce? Keep up the great work, you are truly inspiring to a wealth of us gardeners.

Very informative. I had rosemary seeds fail to germinate this year; maybe stratification was the problem. Didn't wait 12 weeks either. I still have half the seed pack; will put those in the fridge. I definitely use the boiling water method for seed starting mix. Zero issues. Stratification: I did this with English lavender and butterfly milkweed. Milkweed germinated like crazy. The lavender was a complete bust. But I didn't give it all that long before my patience waned. : ) This year, trying again with Munstead which is more cold hardy for my zone.
Lavender is so tough even with stratification. That is why I also over seed it. Munstead is what I grow solely now, Fabric pots are on sale for Black Friday. Keyword search 'Black Friday' at my shop. I use the boiling water and also stick them in the microwave, both of which I learned from you. May be overkill (pun intended) but it works. I do it in small batches, mix well, and use it as soon as it's cool enough to handle. I have NEVER had an issue with fungus gnats using this method. I stratified rosemary and lavender 2 yrs ago with great success. I got around to them late last year, so the lavender I threw in the ground did not come up... maybe they will this next spring. 🤔

So far so good: Grabbed three LED 4 ft lamps, a heavy duty shelf, seeds, containers, bucket of hot water treated seed starter. Growing lettuce in one and oregano, basil, etc in the other tray. In just 3 days all sprouted except for the rosemary. I’m waiting for the tops to crust over just a bit more before watering. It’s been about 10 days since we first planted them. Is it ok to water them yet? LOVE YOUR INSTRUCTIONS!!!!

It will. It is good stuff. So I take a bunch of the Promix stuff and store it in a container with a lid and hydrate it with cool water. I let it sit several weeks. Any fungus gnats should hatch and die. I put some of that back into my starting mix that is sterile. Ill be doing a video on it. Thank you for very important information, since I have many problems germinating any seed here in subtropical Qld, Australia. I constantly get fungus gnats, even inside, covering them up with plastic or a dome, or using yellow sticky traps. Also, I heard on UA-cam by other growers that dry stratification will not work. There seems to be controversy between wet and dry 😮 Which is correct?
Interesting on the dry vs wet. I dont know enough to have an opinion. Seeds hold moisture to survive so they are not bone dry to start. I'll have to look into it more. I use a clean 5gal bucket with a nice lid. The water I boil has aged a few days to reduce the city chlorine and I let it boil for a few minutes. One last tip and you have to be careful, I add a kitchen towel to the boiling water and retrieve it with kitchen tongs to drap over the boiling hot soil for several hours. The hot towel keeps the soil so hot you don't want to touch it for at least one hour. I have a question you might possibly answer for me. Imported fruits and vegetables from other countries are irradiated upon arrival to insure quality control. Does that mean that the seeds cannot be grown into viable plants as well.
SO I don't know on the irradiated. I know people have trouble with sweet potatoes sprout that go through that process. Fabric pots are on sale for Black Friday. Is it OK to put the entire seed packet in the refrigerator if I don't plan on using all the seeds? Or should I only put the seeds I want in a ziplock bag inside the refrigerator?

Good reminder to do this. I just popped my Lupine seeds in the fridge. For your root pouches, do you offer them in 10 bag counts of the same size? say 10 of the 8 gallon size? When I looked a few weeks ago, looked more like 3 counts or a mix of 3 of one size and 3 of another.

This situation happened with me as I’m a beginner plant grower. I started planting and growing strawberry seeds and bell pepper seeds this year July After a month or month in a half the fungus gnats came. Which they were very annoying. Mostly likely Im learning now that is was probably came from the soil that i didn’t not pre clean, and it was contaminated with eggs Im assuming. Currently i don’t have the fungus gnat issue anymore and i don’t see any at all so i think there gone. It has been 65 days as of Today September 8th. My two strawberry plant still have not germinated yet. Is there still hope for them? Are they a lost cause now? Did the fungus gnats kill them? Or do i need to keep being patient and wait for them to germinate? I also want to mention i take pretty good care of them I give them sunlight through my windows indoors, and a water them when needed I also transferred them into bigger pots instead of their seating pots that were smaller before. If anyone can give me helpful information about this, I would appreciate it but I think that I need to keep being patient and there’s still hope for them to grow. I also was thinking of buying a plant fertilizer to help with the soil.
Not sure. But an oil spray should work. Hi Gary. With your help, 'overly' successful starting seeds last year for 1st time using these methods. Question: my house plants often have a few fungus gnats. Use the cider vinegar in little dishes routinely, spray surface soil w/ dilute H2O2... just can't seem to get rid of entirely nor isolate which plant is the culprit. Any other ideas? Was not an issue in basement where I started about 100 plants from seed. PS Made own seed starting mix from peat moss & vermiculite. Wasn't it you I learned that from? Why recommending to purchase it now? In past years, I really liked your mindset of gardening on a budget. Have you changed your philosophy? :(
I put 1 inch of play sand on my house plants That seals the soil and kills off the life cycle of fungus gnats. I do both on making and buying starting mix just because people have different needs and interests. I probably will be doing a make your own video but some people just want to buy it. If your plant can tolerate it, mixing hydrogen peroxide in with your plants water will help. The hydrogen peroxide both kills the eggs, and removes the fungus from the plant roots (the thing that the gnats are feeding on) Again, only if your plant can handle it. You will have to test it out. I've cured and kept away both fungus gnats and whiteflies by using hydrogen peroxide every time I water.
@@TheCausalParadox Just gave the seedlings a peroxide/water drenching. I used 1 to 3 ratio. I am trying to start perennials from seed for the first time. I would like to have decent sized plants by spring. Hoping I am not starting them too soon. 😒
Thank you! I tried baking the seed starting mix, but it became very challenging. I was trying to start seeds as well as grow leafy veggies indoors, and the gnats kept driving me crazy! I also have issues with seedlings dying off, they grow, look good, then just die! Added: I was hoping spinach would be on the stratification list, I can’t get them to germinate. Could it be living in Florida?

It would. Ill talk more about it in future videos. For seed starting indoors, in a house, in a small space, I personally recommend 100% sterile for no fungus gnats. You can add in some Pro-MIx after, and let the microbes spread if you want and I will talking about that. When potting up, I don't use boiling water. Or if I had a large growing space in a tunnel, I would not use boiling water. Anyway, the microbes can be part of the plants life later. Fabric pots are on sale for Black Friday. I am living in zone 5 B where we have frost +++, a lot of snow , etc. Can I do the half time of stratification in refrigerator and the other half in the freeze?? When in fridge, you let the seeds in the envelope??

That is to not kill off the added microbes if you using a pro-mix that has that. That is fine. I am just not concerned about that for the seed starting. As I am in the house. That is a different world. In In a large greenhouse, I would not use boiling water.
HI Gary, are there any seeds that get damaged if they are cold stratified? Also, couldn't the seeds just be planted in the cold and be stratified in the ground?
I don't think so. But seeds that stay cold and wet can get moldy and get fungus and arent viable. So I would over plant if you really wanted to do it that way. I hate to say this, but I used ProMix seed starting mix last year. All my flats, etc were brand new. Most things germinated and did well. However, my tomato seed starts came up twisted and gnarly. It looked like herbicide damage to me. I know that Tomatoes are the canaries in the coal mine for herbicides. I’ve been wondering if the ProMix was lightly contaminated. Anyone else have this happen? I’m going organic this time!

There's a mite you can order to kill off fungus nats if they find you anyway. Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Hypoaspis miles) are predatory mites that are currently used as biological control agent to control fungus gnats that are one of the most eonomically important insect pests of home and greenhouse grown potted plants.

Your videos are really helpful, even though I am an experienced gardener in a completely different zone with different planting dates (FL) Thank you.
It does help rosemary in my experience

I definitely use the boiling water method for seed starting mix. Zero issues. Stratification: I did this with English lavender and butterfly milkweed. Milkweed germinated like crazy. The lavender was a complete bust. But I didn't give it all that long before my patience waned. : ) This year, trying again with Munstead which is more cold hardy for my zone.
Lavender is so tough even with stratification. That is why I also over seed it. Munstead is what I grow solely now,

There is no overkill when it comes to fungus gnats.

The PRO-MIX seed starting has Mycorrhizae. Will the boiling water kill the Mycorrhizae?
Good information in the video 👍
It will. It is good stuff. So I take a bunch of the Promix stuff and store it in a container with a lid and hydrate it with cool water. I let it sit several weeks. Any fungus gnats should hatch and die. I put some of that back into my starting mix that is sterile. Ill be doing a video on it. But bottom line is a sterile mix is all that is needed for transplants.

Never would have occurred to me about the boiling water, but makes total sense. I'm going to try it this year! For the seeds, could we not just plant them outdoors and let them naturally stratify? In the pacific northwest and already threw down some poppy and echinacea seeds...

I am assuming this would work for white flies as well? Any ideas on best way to kill off white flies indoors? Thanks Gary!
Not sure. But an oil spray should work. Its tough with seed starts

The hydrogen peroxide both kills the eggs, and removes the fungus from the plant roots (the thing that the gnats are feeding on)
Again, only if your plant can handle it.
You could try stratifying it but I have had issues with spinach germinating when warm

I see the PROMIX brand in the background. It says WITH MYCO on the bag. Does the boiling water kill the mycorrhiza?

Gary, Promix states not to add boiling water to treat their mix. Please advise.

Good to know . Thank. Ill look them up. Wonder why thy don't inoculate seed starting mix with them.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Yeah. I've wondered that myself. Likely because it might cost 10 cents more.
If you buy some, you can innoculate any standing potting soil you have sitting around in storage with just a pinch.
