See what I like about these videos is if you have anxiety like others and myself, his videos are perfect. He is talking without over doing it, nice and calm and everything in his videos is not gonna overload your sensors. Everything he is doing is very calming like going down a river in a small boat.
I'm so proud. Our boy is growing up. Resisted the urge to overfill. *sniffle* I need a hug. - This is a great review of what seems to be a very complete 24 hour pack. Thanks Kiwi.
I really love how you celebrate new experiences, and that you are sharing that joy with your daughter. It actually reminds me a lot of the relationship I had with my own father as a child. He was in the army and he was absent a lot, but he always told us stories about the strange new foods he tried in other countries. It made me eager to try them, too, and I think that's a great way to get to know an unfamiliar culture. Or at least a first step in the right direction, lol. Thank you!
This one looks probably the most filling out of all the ones I've seen on your channel. Also that bar you had is called Halva, its made from ground sunflower seeds and sugar. Its pretty popular in Russia and countries bordering it.
+BIkaloss Sunflower seeds and peanuts, those are two most popular variants of halva. Sometimes it might have some chocolate bits inside. Halva is a beast.
+BIkaloss im pretty sure Halva is from ground sesame, and i think it originates from turkey and greece? but maybe in Russia they make it from Sunflower seed, never had russian Halva. ( Im from poland)
+BIkaloss Yeah, it's quite popular in Eastern Europe, as well as in Asia or Arabic countries. Btw, I'm from Poland and we do make halve from sunflower. Originally the sunflower halve came from Ukraine or Russia, I believe. Mallariasart, you just have to search better, cause there's a lot of differrent types of halve and they're all delicious. :D
Yay!! Love your reviews awesome job as always. The Boss adorable ! Love how she has no fear in trying new foods.Until next review Have a Good Day! :) :)
This is just the best, the Boss is so adorable what a wholesome child and parent relationship and how lucky to be able to enjoy such an amazing experience together. I love that he encourages her view on each item, she’s growing up just fine and dad is definitely doing a great job.
Awesome video Commonwealth citizen! I am a Canadian and I love your videos, however I must say the European and "foreign" entrees are what intrigue me te most, it is so interesting to see what is consumed and "popular" as entrees across the globe, through your videos! (and Gundog's and gschultz9 videos!) Cheers
+eksiarvamus I don't know what halva or spears are. Always willing to learn, if someone wants to teach me. Looks like the halva is almost wafer-ish? It looks like the only thing I'd be able to compare it to. But, I really have no idea.
+bellaxfatal Halva is a dense flour and nut confection found in the Balkans, Middle East, Asia..everywhere basically. The ingredients vary from country to country. Some even have carrots, others sesame seeds and honey. For Jewish Holidays one form of halva is available in the kosher section in most. grocery stores . Sprats are small fish. Often they are smoked whole and canned. Similar to sardines.
This mre looks like it's very good. The 3 meals are substantial & I like extra touch of the delicious "mystery" bar something that is uncommon unlike other countries will add to their mres.
That rum flavored thing: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halva. There are so many variations,m although we Soviets had only two: sunflower seed and peanut. And coffee is not instant, it is freshly ground, that's how many like it in Latvia and apparently also in Estonia: use ground coffee the same way as instant powder is used, but, of course, result is different.
Seems like you didn't notice that the white sticker with contents was in both Estonian and English :D Halva is basically mashed sunflower seeds or peanuts into a bar, it has lots of sugar and protein. Basically around 24 grams of protein per 50 grams of halva.
2:56 last line: mint bag with the flu WHAT? From what I could tell from what's on the sticker, it seems this has a lot of foodstuffs in it, especially that it's a 24-hour ration. Looks pretty good for a full day's worth of rations Keep up the good videos KiwiDude!
For some reason the halva reminds me of something like wafer? It's the only thing I could compare it to in my head. I don't even like rum or alcohol flavored things, but that looks and sounds really yummy! Great review, as usual! Can't wait to watch the rest of this pack. Keep 'em coming, I'll keep watching! (And, of course, the boss is prettier every time we see her!)
+Kiwi Dude yes, they are! Also, if I could make an observation; I believe the issue that you (along with gundog and gschultz) have with the fill lines on some of these rations you need to rehydrate, is that you guys tend to open the bottoms of the bags first before pouring in the water, which increases the interior volume of the bag and causes you to add way too much water to the product, and I believe you have to pour the water in first before you open the bottom of the bag.
So what, exactly, was in the expedition breakfast. I know it was a lot like oatmeal, or something like that, but what else? BTW, congrats to you, Kiwi, for doing a splendid job on not over-filling the bag, it came in :D . I'd have added just a splash or two of water, myself, to the the mix, but that's just personal preference. I thought the Swiss Army chocolate was a bit of a laugh. It made me wonder if it was multi-purpose/use, or something ;) . I'm also happy you lucked out on not getting bad chocolate, this time. Two successes in one video! You're on a roll, man ;) ! Thus far, what improvements I'd suggest to the ration would be: internal fill-lines for the breakfast, as well as a mid-way tear notch (on either side) of the package. This would make eating it easier, by reducing how much you would have to stick your arm into the bag (with the additional benefit of not risking dirtying your uniform). Clear, concise, step-by-step instructions on how best to use the pouch (in order to get best results) would also be beneficial. I would also suggest ditching the cans, and going with either retort pouch hydrated meals (similar to the MRE), or freeze-dried meals, in similar packaging. This will make the ration lighter, and more compact. Finally, chemical ration heaters, or good quality, might also be a good idea.
Hello Kiwi-Dude and Crystal. Nice to see video from you again. I think it's great they are including real ground coffee in the flo thru bags now in combat rations, Folgers makes them here in the US and they are much better than instant coffee. I would suggest steeping the coffee by itself though then add you creamer and sugar. The mystery desert bar reminds me of middle eastern confection called HALVA ( pronounced Halava ) And, by the way, you ate all three of your deserts all in one go haha. What will you be having now with lunch and dinner? " You don't get yer pudding until you eat yer meat " Did you know No East Too Far has relocated to Australia to study for a year? I am not sure if you ever have a chance to travel there but it would be fun to see the two of you collaborate on a video. Thanks for another great video.
+Bill23799 We also seem to gravitate towards the sweets first :-) That Halva though - wow! I didn't know NETF had moved to Aussie. I did wonder why he'd been quiet on the video front though. Cheers.
I know it's hush hush and you can't talk about it. I figure this is the first step in the MRE reviewers consortium to get together to build that secret survival bunker in Antarctica.. I know when the apocalypse comes i won't make it but it warms my heart to know you and Gundog and gschultz and no east too far and alduin and your families will survive. Try to remake the world into a better place.
+Rocky Raab Thanks Rocky. Good to hear from you. Part 2 just uploaded. Unfortunately, the Boss couldn't be with me for these parts, but we've already filmed the next video and it should be up within the next few days.
I am surprised you recognised the austrian product by Felix - the Gulaschsuppe. Our most sacred national holiday (similar to July 4th for the U.S) is coming up on oct.26th. I am proud to be austrian..
in mystery silver wrap:(I think) Halva is any of various dense, sweet confections served across the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, the Caucasus, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Balkans, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Malta and the Jewish diaspora. Identical sweets exist in other countries, such as China, though these are not generally referred to as "halva".
I'm hungry right now :( That breakfast looked delicious. The Boss makes me want to have children of my own, she's so cute, but then I get reminded of how things roll with my nephews...sigh~
That rum flavored bar is called Halva . Ièm sure you can find it in some stores ( of different receipe and origin). I think they originally come from Israel.
Heating kit is standalone Swedish army's methanol burner all soldiers get issued. It's part of a mess kit. We have bunch of those from Swedes as army surplus. Except for that can of chicken meat, I haven't seen anything else there in Estonian grocery stores. Buckwheat thing seems to be produced for army in particular. Can even has camouflage pattern on it. "Halvaa" is grounded nuts in sugar syrup or something along the lines. Insane amount of calories but not everybody likes it. 19:27 that stuff needs to be mixed with boiling water. Eating it as is - disappointing experience.
The rum-raisin bar in the package is called Halvaa and its made of peanut or some seed paste. Try to google halva or halvaa, its originally from turkey. Lots of calories and keeps you going :)
Matches ? Those would go great in a... I don't know... Maybe a waterproof match holder that is by the computer stand ? LOL just messing with you Kiwi, great video as always... I get excited when I see a new video from you...
Kiwi Dude~ I understand completely.. I just mailed some books today that I was supposed to send a month ago... Im the worst sender also... LOL its all good buddy...
guarana is afruit from brazil amazonia and it has more cafen in it then coffe in brasil you can get it like a stick and you mixt it with water it has a sweet teast very good
You realize, of course, the Boss is the real star here ;) BTW, my Air National Guard unit has been to Estonia a couple times in recent years. Great place...
The breakfast porridge is actually best with hot water. It's my favourite item in the ration packs :) The coffee is crap and the new rations (from the generation the one in the video is from) contain too many sweets in my opinion...
does anybody know if kiwi rehydrated that stuff to the right consistency? presonally i prefer too thick rather than too thin because it intensifies rather than dilutes the flavor.
+oldfrend Hello, As it was listed as a Porridge I would have expected it to have boiling water added as that is basically cooked Muesli. And the consistency would have been correct. If it had been uncooked Muesli then it needed a little more water so you get the milk with it
+teammember99 Hello again, Last time I looked we the U.K are part of Europe. I have never heard of "Adventure food" as a Breakfast item, The nearest we have would be just the"Oats" cooked and call it Porridge. Some like it with Sugar, Some like it with Honey but it would be that sort of consistency. So like you, I would have expected Boiling not Cold Water. I presume the Expedition Breakfast is because of the other things in it?
I'm way late to tell you this but the mystery bar is a thing called Halva, it can be made with pistachio, almond, or sunflower seeds and sugar, its quite popular in eastern Europe (where its actually made from sunflower seeds) and certain parts of the middle east (where its either almond or pistachio) and i'm pretty sure this one got real rum in it, so hopefully the alcohol evaporated from it
+Kiwi Dude hello my name is gene and im a big fan of yours an i was wondering if you would be willing to send me a MRE 24hr ration to try im bush person what i mean by that is i live in the woods of washington state
There is English on the sticker... just spotted it ;) I always giggle when you say jobby... i'm Scottish and boy does that word have a different meaning here.
+Allen .Berge As a kid grandma used to serve up what she called gruel. It was more or less like that buckwheat porridge but with the grain being barley. So I think you are probably correct.
These stickers in the national language on packagings of foreign producers make mad. OK, not everybody knows English/ Russian (two most popular offending languages) and one must presume that everybody would like to know contents and nutritional facts, but these stickers are often glued on information like Best before date..... And they are not very well translated, but sometimes there are wrong stickers glued on .....
Wouldn't it be better for the troops if they carry their food in packets like how the us mre's are cause I thought tin cans would add more weight and they would want to carry light. I'm just thinking, lol.
See what I like about these videos is if you have anxiety like others and myself, his videos are perfect. +tasror (Hug) they don't stay young forever....
*hugs*
That mystery bar is an almond flour marzipan style bar. They are made by Kalev and the rum flavor it is the sweet liqueur Vana Tallinn.
+Daniel Murray (NomaLens) I think I'm addicted to them.
these kinds of bars of popular in spain, you can usually find them in the spanish sections of grocery stores.
Isn't it halva (chałwa)?
no its halva. i read it on the package on the side.
definitely Halvah...and yes its very addicting.
Oh my goodness gracious, me oh my! Brings back memories of my kids eating rations I brought back from the field.
I really love how you celebrate new experiences, and that you are sharing that joy with your daughter. It actually reminds me a lot of the relationship I had with my own father as a child. Instructions unclear, used oxygen absorber as seasoning packet. XD Thanks for the awesome vid Kiwi Dude!
that moment when someone dont know what halva is :D
+MrSupremist Yeah, dust with sugar basically. Or that's what it tastes like.
+Jacek Neumann I always traded my halva for someone's sprats ;)
+eksiarvamus I don't know what halva or spears are. Always willing to learn, if someone wants to teach me. Looks like the halva is almost wafer-ish? It looks like the only thing I'd be able to compare it to. But, I really have no idea.

bellaxfatal Well, foreign foods are common in Europe, foods often don't have "borders". However not spears, but sprats. Google it.
The mystery bar is called Halva, quite popular in the Balkans. It also goes great with their white brined cheese.
Had to pause the video and take a breather when i heard 'cereal' and 'fill line' ;P
I'm staying tuned for part 2! That bar is very interesting...
Halva
Love to see a new upload!

Keep up the good videos KiwiDude!
+Nathan. Hello, You have to remember these are Army ration packs. We use a lot more Calories every day than the average bear BooBoo
+Nathan. yes...they add flu to the food so instead of just being soldiers we are mobile, smart-bioweapons :D
awesome video!! would love to try some of these international ration packs someday

these are really cool I want one soooo bad +love your vids
my favourite part of the video is when the boss eats LOL
The rum bar was a rum flavored halva, a sesame based confection
+leo Araujo Delicious!

+Chris Angelastro Cheers!
lol, the oxygen absorber sachet had Dutch on it "niet eetbaar" meaning "not eatable".
A very hearty meal for some really bad winters. ( like here in Canada)
Loved the scary music. : )
+PREPFORIT The next video goes out to you Canadians :-) An IMP in the next few days.
looks like kiwi couldn't control himself and had to have his desserts for breakfast!
+TheHumpjbear Subconsciously, I think. We've done it before too!

Cheers! Greetings from New Zealand.
Nice Video, this Swiss Army Chocolate looks good.Yumm! ;-)
before you looked at the small brown packs with the candy i was guessing they were fruit grains like in the nz and aussie rations.
i had the coffee tea bag idea years ago.
should have done something with it.
Hello Kiwi-Dude and Crystal. Nice to see video from you again.
I think it's great they are including real ground coffee in the flo thru bags now in combat rations,
Folgers makes them here in the US and they are much better than instant coffee. I would suggest
steeping the coffee by itself though then add you creamer and sugar.
The mystery desert bar reminds me of middle eastern confection called HALVA ( pronounced Halava )
And, by the way, you ate all three of your deserts all in one go haha.
What will you be having now with lunch and dinner?
" You don't get yer pudding until you eat yer meat "
Did you know No East Too Far has relocated to Australia to study for a year? I am not sure if you ever have
a chance to travel there but it would be fun to see the two of you collaborate on a video.
Thanks for another great video.
+Bill23799 We also seem to gravitate towards the sweets first :-) That Halva though - wow! I didn't know NETF had moved to Aussie. I did wonder why he'd been quiet on the video front though. Cheers.

It's been too long between Boss fixes. But now my addiction is fed. For now. Standing by for the upcoming parts of what promises to be a great ration.
+Rocky Raab Thanks Rocky. Good to hear from you. Part 2 just uploaded. Unfortunately, the Boss couldn't be with me for these parts, but we've already filmed the next video and it should be up within the next few days.

Next time you have mylar covered packs, try putting them on the outer edges of the frame so lighting bounces off frame not directly into the lens.
I wish you still made videos man. I hope all is well, I'm re watching some mre videos during the great covid19 pandemic.
in mystery silver wrap:(I think)
Halva is any of various dense, sweet confections served across the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, the Caucasus, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Balkans, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Malta and the Jewish diaspora. Identical sweets exist in other countries, such as China, though these are not generally referred to as "halva".
I'm hungry right now :( That breakfast looked delicious. The Boss makes me want to have children of my own, she's so cute, but then I get reminded of how things roll with my nephews...sigh~
+micoromico Lol.. she can have her 'moments' too sometimes ;-)
+Kiwi Dude is that why the vids been becoming monthly? Hahahaha. Must get her on a good day
That rum flavored bar is called Halva . Ièm sure you can find it in some stores ( of different receipe and origin). I think they originally come from Israel.
The mystery bar is Halva. It's a compressed almond paste sort of thing.
The interior of that rum bar looks very similar to the interior of a Butterfinger if you're familiar with that, albeit a little... flakier.
+Dragosteel I'm not familiar with Butterfingers, but wow - that Halva was delicious!
That stuff is called Halva. it's a middle eastern deseret bar basically. it's rum flavor as you said.

Ahah, the boss is the best reviewer out there. Yummae !
16:00 "It smells familiar but unfamiliar" "I like the smell" It's weed
+Garlicvideos Gt we wish it was weed :D
The chocolate bar is always the go to for barter. Amazing what you can trade it for.....
Good to seeya back on, Go Wallabies, hoping for an ANZAC world cup!
+grumpy150 I'm the worst sender ever, aren't I? I'll set a calendar reminder for this weekend :-)
Kiwi Dude~ I understand completely.. I just mailed some books today that I was supposed to send a month ago... Im the worst sender also... LOL its all good buddy...
traditionally, halva is made from sesame seeds. Enjoyed the vid very much, thank you! :-)
I'd love to try one of these. I have other rations or cash for trade....
guarana is afruit from brazil amazonia and it has more cafen in it then coffe in brasil you can get it like a stick and you mixt it with water it has a sweet teast very good
4:31 and it has the Swedish AB Felix logo on it too.
Really Welcome sight Kiwi I just got sick and vomited 3 times D:
looks almost like a cookie dough, the rum thing, looks nice
It's not divided just between breakfast vs lunch/dinner videos but also good vs bad :D
Love the videos keep up the good work and say hi to the Boss for me
Ahhh the Halva....one of my favorite desserts. So fatening though :P
+Velvet Way Yep - unfortunately, it tasted far too good to be healthy :-(
This is a ration i would like to get my hands on
You realize, of course, the Boss is the real star here ;) BTW, my Air National Guard unit has been to Estonia a couple times in recent years. Great place...
Yes an Estonian MRE.
Any Estonians here?
i do have a question, Did you spend time lugging around the Steyr AUG or the L1A1 in the defense force or are you just an enthusiast?
The breakfast porridge is actually best with hot water. It's my favourite item in the ration packs :) The coffee is crap and the new rations (from the generation the one in the video is from) contain too many sweets in my opinion...
+Mark Rand (Mark545) Ajateenistus ja reservõppekogunemine.
The consistency of that Rum bar looks like a Flake Bar
does anybody know if kiwi rehydrated that stuff to the right consistency? presonally i prefer too thick rather than too thin because it intensifies rather than dilutes the flavor.
+oldfrend Hello, As it was listed as a Porridge I would have expected it to have boiling water added as that is basically cooked Muesli. And the consistency would have been correct. If it had been uncooked Muesli then it needed a little more water so you get the milk with it
Expedition Breakfast is commercially known in Europe, it's a Dutch manufacturer of freeze-dried food 'Adventure Food', always add hot water :)
+teammember99 Hello again, Last time I looked we the U.K are part of Europe. I have never heard of "Adventure food" as a Breakfast item, The nearest we have would be just the"Oats" cooked and call it Porridge. I presume the Expedition Breakfast is because of the other things in it?
I love halva, would love to try the one with rum in
It was so good!
good stuff
I'm way late to tell you this but the mystery bar is a thing called Halva, it can be made with pistachio, almond, or sunflower seeds and sugar, its quite popular in eastern Europe (where its actually made from sunflower seeds) and certain parts of the middle east (where its either almond or pistachio) and i'm pretty sure this one got real rum in it, so hopefully the alcohol evaporated from it
+OlEgSaS32 Thanks. It was delicious!
Fill Line..... DUH DUH DUHHHHHHHH....Love it!!!

Kiwi Dude who got you this? I'm half Estonian and I really want to acquire an Estonian military ration.
Buckwheat porridge. I believe it's called gruel in Dickens novels.
+Allen .Berge As a kid grandma used to serve up what she called gruel. It was more or less like that buckwheat porridge but with the grain being barley. So I think you are probably correct.
The bar totally looks like the mantecol from argentina, you should try that
+Yesi Yeims I'll keep an eye out for it.
Despite the E ingredients, nice package.
that moment when i watch this video i must say estonian military mre just be like a american mre.
This thing you like so much and dont know how its called, it is "halva" ;)
Wouldn't it be better for the troops if they carry their food in packets like how the us mre's are cause I thought tin cans would add more weight and they would want to carry light. I'm just thinking, lol.
+GreenTeaNinja 23 used to be so, but the tin cans off the market give better result for the buck / taste scale I guess
+miku1723 okay, thanks.
i think that the mistery things is halvah
where do you get the food please tell me
