Mental Canvas has somehow flown under my radar for a while. It's a really interesting storyboarding and animation app. It available on Windows as well. It makes it really easy to sketch out a scene in 3d and them move the camera through it.

Price is a killer. This looks like something Procreate could add as a patch considering they were ambitious enough to add 3D model painting.

    •  2 роки тому +13

They already have some very basic animation feats, so you're right. They could add it just fine. Or create an animation-oriented Procreate as independent app.

    A few thoughts:
-Calling this an “animation” app feels… (I hate this word, because I don’t think the intent is/was malicious) “disingenuous.” My reasoning being that the primary feature isn’t so much that you can move things, but that you can separate them from each other. Someone mentioned it being “parallax” and I think that fits it a lot more.
-I can see how this slipped under your radar. It’s very hard to describe outside of video, and ridiculously overpriced for something that, for the average iPad user is a novelty at best.
-Following the above, I can’t see what I would use this for professionally beyond the novelty of being parallax. At least, not based on what’s currently shown in the video (i.e. how good are the native drawing tools, can you draw a full 3D scene vs parallax, can you export a workfile, etc) Maybe if the idea goes viral, sure, but it doesn’t solve any particular consumption problem a regular illustration, or 3D modeling/sculpting app doesn’t already.
-Also, that price. Maybe viable for professional usage as an artist tool, not so much for something that appears to be a novelty app. Which makes me feel like I’m missing something from the video, as to how it would be used commercially or professionally.
Also, going to echo a few of the others, and express a little disappointment in promoting an NFT sponsor. Right now, there are more downsides (nonconsensual art theft, inability to safeguard actual art purchases, environmental effects, scarcity for computer hardware due to buyout by crypto) than upsides, so it’s a little disappointing to see an ad for them here.

This comment really hit the nail on the head 👍 Also most of the animations I see come out of this remind me of stuff you can do with apps like CapCut where it tries to separate foreground and background, then do a parallax rotation - it's not as precise, but the whole process is pretty much automatic. So there's an easier way to do even the gimmicky part 😜
(And as someone who works in IT, NFTs were a product of a Hackathon that even the creators thought was a fluke but grifters turned into the next big hype. It's pretty much just a scam at this point, I advise folks not get involved in any way - when the crash inevitable comes people will be all tio happy to pin everyone on the wall of shame 😱)

Long story short, the ipad is becoming a super dope compact device for professional animation studio in your backpack

Imposing a limit on how many interactive web scenes you can do AFTER people pay for it seems like a level of greed I would never support, and as other people have mentioned there is much more reasonable software that does what this does.

Hi Brad, sorry for bothering you on a Saturday morning but I was looking for an advice from you. I'm planning to purchase a tablet that I'll be using mainly for product design sketching and watching movies / tv shows on Netflix. I won't be using any other feature of the device, nor I'll be interested in other specs such as performance, audio quality, battery and so on.
Accordingly to my limited but very specific usage I had in mind to purchase the new 2021 iPad 9th gen, but the Apple Pencil 1 is a bit of a let down to me... not only due to its worse responsiveness but also when it comes to charging and portability.
What should I do in your opinion?
I was really tempted by the new iPad Mini... but I'm scared it might be a bit too small for drawing.
My budget is limited and I'm also considering other non-Apple brands.
    I appreciate your work!

I believe the Air has more Ram (if considering buying the recent model, as if not, the comparison would become too complex) and better processor. So, that'd be important if your canvases are very big in pixel dimensions (ie, large print projects) or with tons of layers. Other than that, I believe both would do well. IMO the issue is size. If you don't mind that there's less software (and generally worse) available for art in Android (but Sketchbook, Infinite Painter, Medibang and Artflow provide all you need, IMO), a Samsung Tab S7 FE costs just a bit more than Air or iPad 9th, and it's 12,4 inches, instead of 10 inches of the iPad 9. IMO it's important for art making. That said, I believe the default color calibration of an iPad _might_ be more accurate than the S7 FE or Plus. And it's important as no tablet (that I know of) can be color calibrated like PC and Mac monitors can, so, you are stuck with what they can do by default (one of the reasons why an artist is better of with a desktop system). I mean, the laminated or no laminated is imo a smaller issue than the screen size. Laminated will mean that you see the tip of the pen EXACTLY on the pixels that you are painting, but I believe with an iPad 9+Pencil 1 you would not notice it much. More noticeable could be the line lag, as I think is kind of worse in a regular iPad than in an iPad Pro (a new one). Knowing very well the commissions world, in your shoes I perhaps would stick to making them on a PC, but if it's gotta be portable, a good laptop + XP-Pen Deco Pro Medium (130$) tablet can do perhaps a more flexible service; and it all fits in a bag. Or an iPad pro (I know, 1200$ or so...), or at least a Samsung S7 FE (the S7+ costs as much as an iPad pro, while the latter has a ton more software available).

My criticism about NFTs is the hidden costs that can result in the inflated price. I think when it comes to artist choosing to be apart of that space they will need either a user base or a platform that offers cheaper fees so they can have a bigger take away. This information is unfortunately not made clear and can leave the artist out of pocket

@@3polygons the idea behind them is pretty bad.
Imagine un ironically saying the following:
" please do not right click my nft I paid $700 for it. You do not have permission to copy and paste it."
Just think about that lol. And lets say you have the original, a genuine one. What will you do with it? Constantly remind yourself and others that its real. Shod we sit through the Verification process regularly?
Are you going to put it on a wall? If its printed out for that, why pay a bunch of money for a digital copy of it?

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons 2 роки тому +1

@@KyngD469 The right click thing happens already to any digital art sell on internet. I don't know if you are familiar with it (like Colbow, I am an artist) but physical art is only a portion (some would say that small in comparison) of the art sold today. I don't speak now of expensive art galleries with world famous artists: those will sell anyway and in any media, no matter what. But tons of mid range (and smaller indies) artists are selling their art in digital way before the first NFT was produced. They sell both in the personal website and in stock art/photography places. It is the exact same thing than an NFT ! At least in regards of security and theft. Watermarks can be removed digitally, and art can be trace or recreated, with extreme ease. Indeed, a design can be copied, even if slightly (but there are strong legal issues with that, too). This exists since day one in digital art/audio, etc sells. And yet there's a huge business around digital artwork. First, the percentage of people buying is enough to maintain the business. Second, you cannot do a set of things WITHOUT a proper license of the artwork, be it as a digital written license, or in the case of NFTs, the NFT itself is the contract, so to speak.
The analysis of the right click does leave out all the business side considerations about it. Of course fans can grab by right click a Goku artwork piece from Dragon Ball, as a JPG, but because such fan does not have the copyright of it, no commercial usage rights allowed (try to print a t-shirt with it and sell it, or sell anything), he/she might (if not is because the company doesn't need it/the kid has no traffic) get a cease and desist letter from Toei Animation (or whoever currently owns the rights of such image and character), and the fan will remove it, or the hosting company will remove such website. When it's a company infringing in this way, there might be quite worse implications (besides being a PR disaster). And... this is not different with NFTs. So, art is as protected as it was before. There are indeed more chances of your picture on the wall to be stolen.
So, the warning of the artist ("please, blah blah...") is not "just" a hope of good will on your side. It is indeed a warning (some artists don't know any of these basics things, but most do. That some won't care if you are just a fan, that's another thing, but I wouldn't take the chance). That artist can take a collection of legal actions against any theft, and some of them include fines from authorities, and etc. Even more, can stop any illegal use of her/his artwork at any given moment. I can assure you any hosting will promptly execute an account ban even to paying customers (ie, the fan paying for a hosting), as it is in the TOS of any hosting, social platform (which will cancel such account in an instant) and any place on internet.
To your question about the art being an original. Indeed, a NFT is about the most secure way to be sure that it is indeed an original from the author. It does not need any constant confirmation. It is stronger than a physical signature. Actually, it does not only serve for artwork, it is (and will be) being used for many other types of contracts.
The last question is very easy to answer. Digital art exists since a very long while, before any block chain was invented. Digital art has many uses (indeed, currently more than printed art, in our technified society, and more relevant, as is more eco-friendly), specially in the legal aspects of it, which are the ones where the business needs (be it games, films, art for business in many different applications, etc). Indeed, the shipping and storage of physical art is WAY more expensive, and worse, causes (trucks, planes, storage facilities, etc) a huge carbon footprint, compared to digital art. Printing is way less environmentally friendly than having the art as digital. You might only be thinking about having an oil or watercolor picture to hang in a wall, but there are tons of more usages of graphic and art pieces than that. Again, specially by businesses, publications, games/film industry, graphic design companies and a large etc. All these need rights to use the artwork. It is irrelevant that it is provided through a NFT contract or a regular (paper/digital) one. In legal (and so, money related) matters, both are totally safe for the artist and the buyer.
I am NOT in favor of current Ethereum (ETH) NFTs. As are *POW* based, and so, provoking a energy usage (kind of indirectly though, so, that is debated) much larger than needed, while *POS* based crypto coins are very frugal in energy usage. According to several studios, it is smaller (an NFT using POS) in the total energy use, compared to mail by plane or truck a printed art illustration/picture across the country. So, you can right now produce NFTs using such block chains, and not ETH (until it reaches 2.0, as it will become POS, if that ever happens), by doing it in Hic Et Nunc, SignArt, Kalamint or any of those which use Tezos, Cardano or etc POS based coins. And so to get your income in a much more environmentally friendly way. But the worries about copyright should be the same than in any of the pre-NFTs market, so, it's not a valid argument.
