A happy coming together of interpretation by the conductor, articulation by the players, and great engineering.
Splendid performances. Mozart + Klemperer = unequaled excellence.
Both Klemperer and Bruno Walter were students of Gustav Mahler, and all of Mahler's pupils had a way with Mozart. The recordings of Klemperer and Walter should prove that Mahler was a fine teacher, as well as a great composer. OBSCURE FACTOID: Otto Klemperer was the father of actor Werner Klemperer of HOGAN'S HEROES fame. Walter and Klemperer were refugees from the Nazis, and we got some of Europe's best people because of Nazi persecution.
The great Otto Klemperer.Immortal great recordings.
Klemperer reportedly called himself immoralist, contrasting himself to Bruno Walter, whom he referred to as a moralist. In many Klemperer performances, I can hear why Klemperer thought of himself that way, but these are such warm, graceful performances. There's nothing of the a moralist about them. Yet I wouldn't say that they're romantic or especially emotional performances. If anything, as in many Klemperer performances, I find myself unusually aware of the inner structure of each movement, of how individual phrases build on one another. Yet nothing sounds clinical or dry here.
All of these performances are splendid, and several are well-nigh awe-inspiring. Otto Klemperer, a true Master, generates tremendous excitement not from fast tempi, but from guiding meticulous and precise performances in ways that bring out the innate tensions in the music in full clarity. The orchestral playing is not only taut and exact, but extraordinarily beautiful as well.
Thank you for your comment, we share your opinion: Klemperer is not a ‘romantic' interpreter.
I've heard lots of Klemperer. Even his Tschaikovsky is not so romantic. But he pulls off fine performances.
I've always suspected that Klemperer misspoke when he called himself an "immoralist" in contrast to Bruno Walter. I think he meant "amoralist"--someone who didn't try to draw a moral out of a piece of music rather than someone who reveled in the immoral in music.
also my opinion@@kennethduckworth8100
I return to these recordings again and again. They are a legendary moment in recording history ... the remarkable partnership between Klemperer, the Philharmonia, Walter Legge and EMI is now remastered with superb fidelity and uploaded by CMRR. The project and collaboration resulting in these recordings over the span of nearly a decade, unequivocally brought Mozart to the fore, long before the composer became the household name he has now become; long before the fashion of period performance. Klemperer easily holds his own with Bruno Walter, not only because of his superb understanding of the structure of the music and its evocation with talented musicians, but because of the imaginative scope of this project at the time. Thank you for this grand upload.
Walter Legge deserves the name 'artistic director of the century'. Thank you Michael for your comment :-)
Otto Klemperer's interpretive merit can certainly hardly be underestimated. However, to claim that Mozart only became internationally known as a result of this reveals a relatively capital gap in memory between 1791 and, let's say, 1956. If we restrict the statement to a specific orchestral part of his work, one could perhaps be more comfortable with it.
There is no such thing as the hit or miss with Mozart's symphonies
All is splendid, great.
You'd be surprised to discover the high number of conductors who have butchered Mozart's symphonies and made them sound horribly. Klemperer was not, of course, one of them.

A wonderful treasure trove of these iconic symphonic masterpieces! Thanks for uploading. ❤️🎼🎵🎶👏🇮🇪☘️

Thanks, oh thanks for these. I have some of them on old LPs. But it's nice having them here, where I can listen and not have to change records every 20 minutes. Great readings!
Que dire d'autre que "DIVIN" ? MERCI pour ces heures merveilleuses. 💖💐🙋
Immense thanks for sharing this treasure trove of Mozart masterpieces and Klemperer 's artistry. PS: Thanks, everyone, for the insightful comments.
Mozart's🎶✨✨⭐💞🎶🎶 Magical Music will Still be played for a thousand Years ,✨✨🎶💞
Excellent performance and good audio, really enjoying this. The period performances of Mozart sound thin. Imagine if Mozart had access to todays orchestras he’d want it this way. After all, he wrote for the opera, which is expansive and grand. All the great works of Mozart are operatic - the symphonies, the piano concertos - and the cantabile melodies are strengthened by the larger orchestra.

Ciclo de sinfonias de Mozart gravada de forma magistral .. Obrigado "Classical Music/Reference Recording" !
Thank you. It's gorgeous.
Absolument génial et merci 😊
Magnifique !
quelle version , New York, Columbia ?
sounds great.
Let´s speak about tempi and transparence, I like his moderate tempi, every note gets its time
what it needs to develope sound, even slower than Karl Böhm, but full of spirit.
@Luigi Raimondo Pomo : Yes , I agree, I remember the well - balanced tempi of Böhm., so easy found in the miiddle like in a dream , and his minuets were really classical minuets in 3/4 and not a waltz ....

Klemperer is Greatness .. oh and Mozart too ... lol.
Superb! Thank you! Do you have the actual recording dates if each symphony? If so, please post. 📯
Symphonies No.
25 : Muti VPO ( ou Harnoncourt, Celibidache )
29 : Fricsay VSO ( ou Muti VPO )
33 : Carlos Kleiber BPO ou Mravinsky
34 : Frans Bruggen
lets have peace everywhere - we all deserve a good & safe life. 🇰🇼☮🌎🌍🌏
Es Muss Sein...!
Klemperer...^^
Thank you!
Excellent upload as always :). One question though: why is this called a "Century's recording" instead of "Reference?" Though I enjoy Klemperer's Mozart, I would think that Bruno Walter's would more deserving of the former designation.
hi Nikhil Bajaj, Thank you for your interest, you will find some answers in the presentation video :
ua-cam.com/video/giE0dyLD1jc/v-deo.html
so this is colonel Klink's father conducting, yes?
Which symphony is playing now?
No 25 -1er movement is really fast 😱
You should listen the 1948 amsterdam recording.Probably the fastest ever.
Yes, it is! It is Allegro con brio, but still in 4/4. Klemperer treats it as being in 2/2, alla breve
Great recording however, the tempo seems a bit too fast. Still good, though.
Steven Som Fast seems like a unlikely description of most of Klemperer’s work, especially late performances such as the St. Matthew. To me these sound just right.
@@peterheiman8621 Yes, I never thought that something like that - too fast - could be said for any Otto's interpretations. Just listen to his Mahler's second. Still, I like it as well.
Would you dare to compare Mozarts and Beethovens symphonies? So would you say they are equal or not...these people who say that you can't compare art don't have to give their opinion xD. Would be interesting.
Both Mozart and Beethoven were standing on the shoulders of Bach, having been guided there by Haydn.
@@angusspencer627 That's totally right. But that doesn't mean that Bach has to be greater...
@@wlrlel Indeed, as the foundations of a cathedral are not better than its vaults.
@@angusspencer627 Can be. But don't have to. But I see...you understand something from music
@@angusspencer627
I suggest you bin the ‘Symphonies for Idiots’ book and actually listen to the music; Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven are unique individual voices who made their own distinctive contribution to the symphonic repertoire.
Any attempt to compare these three composers is as pointless as comparing red, blue, and yellow.
