Both Klemperer and Bruno Walter were students of Gustav Mahler, and all of Mahler's pupils had a way with Mozart. The recordings of Klemperer and Walter should prove that Mahler was a fine teacher, as well as a great composer. OBSCURE FACTOID: Otto Klemperer was the father of actor Werner Klemperer of HOGAN'S HEROES fame. Walter and Klemperer were refugees from the Nazis, and we got some of Europe's best people because of Nazi persecution.

The great Otto Klemperer.Immortal great recordings.

  • @raid1966

Klemperer reportedly called himself immoralist, contrasting himself to Bruno Walter, whom he referred to as a moralist. In many Klemperer performances, I can hear why Klemperer thought of himself that way, but these are such warm, graceful performances. There's nothing of the a moralist about them. Yet I wouldn't say that they're romantic or especially emotional performances. If anything, as in many Klemperer performances, I find myself unusually aware of the inner structure of each movement, of how individual phrases build on one another. Yet nothing sounds clinical or dry here.
All of these performances are splendid, and several are well-nigh awe-inspiring. Otto Klemperer, a true Master, generates tremendous excitement not from fast tempi, but from guiding meticulous and precise performances in ways that bring out the innate tensions in the music in full clarity. The orchestral playing is not only taut and exact, but extraordinarily beautiful as well.

I've always suspected that Klemperer misspoke when he called himself an "immoralist" in contrast to Bruno Walter. I think he meant "amoralist"--someone who didn't try to draw a moral out of a piece of music rather than someone who reveled in the immoral in music.

I return to these recordings again and again. They are a legendary moment in recording history ... the remarkable partnership between Klemperer, the Philharmonia, Walter Legge and EMI is now remastered with superb fidelity and uploaded by CMRR. The project and collaboration resulting in these recordings over the span of nearly a decade, unequivocally brought Mozart to the fore, long before the composer became the household name he has now become; long before the fashion of period performance. Klemperer easily holds his own with Bruno Walter, not only because of his superb understanding of the structure of the music and its evocation with talented musicians, but because of the imaginative scope of this project at the time. Thank you for this grand upload.

Otto Klemperer's interpretive merit can certainly hardly be underestimated. However, to claim that Mozart only became internationally known as a result of this reveals a relatively capital gap in memory between 1791 and, let's say, 1956. If we restrict the statement to a specific orchestral part of his work, one could perhaps be more comfortable with it.

Excellent performance and good audio, really enjoying this. The period performances of Mozart sound thin. Imagine if Mozart had access to todays orchestras he’d want it this way. After all, he wrote for the opera, which is expansive and grand. All the great works of Mozart are operatic - the symphonies, the piano concertos - and the cantabile melodies are strengthened by the larger orchestra.

Magnifique !

    Symphonies No.
    25 : Muti VPO ( ou Harnoncourt, Celibidache )
    29 : Fricsay VSO ( ou Muti VPO )
33 : Carlos Kleiber BPO ou Mravinsky
    34 : Frans Bruggen

    • @classicalmusicreference
      @classicalmusicreference  4 роки тому +1

Would you dare to compare Mozarts and Beethovens symphonies? So would you say they are equal or not...these people who say that you can't compare art don't have to give their opinion xD. Would be interesting.

Both Mozart and Beethoven were standing on the shoulders of Bach, having been guided there by Haydn.

I suggest you bin the ‘Symphonies for Idiots’ book and actually listen to the music; Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven are unique individual voices who made their own distinctive contribution to the symphonic repertoire.
Any attempt to compare these three composers is as pointless as comparing red, blue, and yellow.

Origins of music unevidenced. Except it is gift to humanity from God the Creator. Music continues in heaven. Discontinues in hell.
Jesus Christ died and resurrected for remissions of everybody's pre-existing sins to save from eternal hell. Penalty of sin already paid by Jesus Christ on The Cross. Accept HIM. Be saved from eternal hell. Enter heaven. Enjoy heavenly music. For free.
