Yeah if he’s not ready to give Amber informed consent on what she’s likely to deal with, he’s not ready to date. Way too many dudes got upset when the girlfriend had agency and got upset when her boyfriend non stop lied to her. It especially irked me when Mark “revealed” himself like it was a get out of jail free card and not a clear attempt to pawn responsibility off.
I work as a coach and a teacher so I always found Amber and her reactions to be both justified and realistic. I chalked up the hate to people having a personal bias oh knowing Mark and his side of the story, versus truly understanding how dramatic, irrational, and idiotic teenagers can be. Loved her character
A thing I feel like a lot of people either miss or purposely ignore is that even without the danger aspect, it is not unreasonable to want open and honest communication with your partner. Even if they have what they think is a good reason for continuing the lie, if you know that's what they're doing it will still hurt you. People seem to have the mindset that Mark did at the start. "If she just hears there's a good reason for it, then all her hurt feelings should just go away." That's not how people work, and it's unfair to expect a reaction like that from someone. Mark was a bad boyfriend, and even though the reason was justifiable, he was also lying about it, and continued to lie after being multiple chances to be honest. This is the kind of complicated situation that *needs* an honest conversation to end well. A big gesture that explains everything doesn't *fix* everything. It seems like a lot of people don't realize that, or at least aren't comfortable with it being in their stories. And I think that's a shame.
1000% agree. If I were trying to do a full response to the LS video essay, I would have gone pretty hard on the fact that he says "bitch you are stupid and unimportant" about Amber as though she's supposed to be totally fine with the lies. The lies were valid enough reason to be upset with his actions. The fact those lies are an active threat to her life just makes it so much worse.
I need you to know I agree with you and I have been tooting this particular horn since the first conversation I had about the show. It's just the same misogyny levelled against Skyler White in Breaking Bad. Women in stories have to act perfectly rationally and unemotionally to be at best ignored.
But don’t forget when you do have a woman acting perfectly rationally all of a sudden she becomes a “Girlboss” There is literally no winning once they’ve decided to be mad
@AdityaSingh-lp5rp I’ve done a bit of those in my comics vids. That’s fair! I’m sure there’s a way to edit clips to avoid copyright but in the future my goal is to have full talking head vids with clips interspersed. A tad more interesting than a solid image
It was better set in the second season, of course they are young and imature, and of course you have the right to be important to your partner and is almost impossible if he has to ponder between a date and saving the world, maybe thinking better the dialogs of the first season could have helped to make the point
I disagree only because Mark wasn't dating Amber for that long. I think it's insane to reveal your secret identity to someone when you've just started dating; you're basically giving them the ability to turn yours and your family's lives upside down by revealing your secret. They reason why people see Amber in the wrong is becasue she knew why Mark was being a bad boyfriend and instead of confronting him and talking about or just leaving him she expected him to put her first without considering the weight that mark was bareing. You say that she was in danger but that's what the secret identiy is for. That could have been anyone sitting in Ambers place season two and the only reason she was in danger was because the wrong person knew Marks identity. The young exuse can only go so far when excusing Ambers behavior. Everyone is upset because her knowing Mark was a hero the whole time or half the time makes her seem malicious or at the very least super selfish.
I made it clear that if we accept that premise that it’s insane to reveal your identity that soon, then you don’t get to date. That’s my point. You’re right he shouldn’t tell her his identity, so therefore he shouldn’t date her. Of course I understand why he did, because he’s young, but for some reason we let it slide for him but not her. What he does is infinitely worse because it actively endangers her life. Yes the wrong person knew his identity, but that’s something he can’t control, and therefore he can never know if she’s safe or not. If you have ever been lied to by a partner, you probably know it’s preferable for them to come clean rather than confront them directly, hence why she didn’t confront him over it. She could have done so in a better way, but that’s where immaturity comes in. She did an understandable thing in a sub-optimal way
I never got how the whole i didn't tell you to protect you thing works, like if i hated invincible and found out his identity, proceeding to capture his gf, if she told me, what are you taking about i don't date invincible, id still capture her. knowing doesn't change anything for the person being protected as they're in danger either way, like if she didn't know, would the thing with the other viltrumite in the restaurant have gone differently? It's okay to not want to share, but framing that as for her own good and not his seems patronizing
I completely disagree with the idea that he is wrong to keep his secret identity a secret....? It's not much of a secret identity if anyone you date for such a short period of time has access to that info. While yes, I can see the argument for simply not dating at all, I think that's a more mature decision to expect from a teenager. Being a superhero realistically equals zero civilian love life... realistically, how would someone who just got their powers understand that. I think Amber was just poorly written without the "twist" in mind. I think all of her complaints made more sense without her knowing, but clearly make no sense with her knowing.
I feel like you’re missing key things I said. Yes it’s a mature thing to ask of Mark-which is why I specifically point out that it’s understandable why he made the immature decision. His actions are understandable but they’re morally wrong all the same. And I have no idea how she doesn’t make sense with the twist in mind. All of her actions still work according to what I laid out.
@@edgierthanthou Thank you for responding. I think you ignore some pretty direct quotes from her to insist she is bothered by his secret keeping, which she does later admit... but before all that she very much states she is bothered by his lack of being there, and even in her emotional breakdown professes that she is bothered by his lack of being there. Which means she is DIRECTLY lying about what is bothering her to manipulate him into fessing up about being a hero. Which also means she went through the lengths of saying he abandoned her when the reality was that SHE KNEW he didnt. And did this through tears, keeping the face up the whole way. You dont reconcile with the fat that she is very specific and driect about her criticisms and ignore that to say she was actually criticizing him for the lying the whole time, which is contrary to her actual statements.
You are wrong on so many levels... 1) Mark had no reason to believe that dating him put her at risk in season 1 because almost all the superheros he knows is married and we never see their family attacked, and in his entire life as the son of a supe he and his mom have been safe. 2) Revealing his secret identity would potentially reveal his father's identity AND they had not been dating long enough to build that type of trust - additionally, superheroes are run through the CIA and that probably means they are all given the protocol to wait for marriage to reveal this type of information... 3) You cannot say Mark ignored the problem in episode 6 for selfish reasons without acknowledging that Amber caused the distraction by guilt tripping him for abandoning her in a fight when she knew he was the one who saved them...This was a poor writing decision to change a major plot point of the source material that fundamentally altered Amber's character for the worse (I'm the comics she didn't know until Mark told her).
@@cjwickliff 1) this is ridiculous. You don’t need textual examples of an obvious thing happening to know it can happen. If mark undercooked chicken and gave her some you wouldn’t say “how could he have known about foodborne illness when we never saw it in the show???” 2) yes which is why he shouldn’t date non-superheroes. I addressed this specifically. It’s actually insane to say someone should wait until marriage to reveal that. 3) I literally acknowledge specifically why she handled the situation imperfectly AND gave Mark a ton of leeway.
i have literally never seen any content about invincible outside of the actual show and ads and shit and i had no idea anyone disagreed with amber?? like shes just. a girl who wants to spend time with her boyfriend but hes a super hero and she gets that but shes feeling a little selfish anyway. which is . just . personhood?? like lmao i 1000% agree
It’s disappointing that the discourse is this bad. I would love to be able to have normal discussions about the characters without this stuff bogging them down
You're disingenuous and idiotic and that is why you have virtually no following. Enjoy delusion retard.
