- In this video I show you how to install the Lumary smart RBGCW recessed canned lights. I will also give you my opinion on the lights.
These recessed can lights are about as easy to install as changing a light bulb. Lumary also has the same lights for a remodel or old construction. This video is for existing canned lights.
Features of this product include, Smart Control with your phone and voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Home. You can dim, change colors, sync to music and select many different pre-set scenes depending on your mood.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I will answer honestly and I’m sure I will find out more info about these lights, good and bad, the more that I use them.

***ONE YEAR UPDATE!***
Guys- honestly, don’t waste your money on these lights. I had 10 lights. Sent by Lumary. Before one year of having these installed 4 of them went out (all within 1 month of each other). They are way too expensive for less than a year of use. I’d look elsewhere. Hope this helps. Cool lights, too expensive for the short use I got out of them.
Thanks for the update. I installed the same Lumary retrofit lights and would add: When changing colors for Halloween, difficult to achieve a true purple, and orange is impossible. Lights are supposed to auto update via the internet, but some do and some don't, resulting in slightly different settings for each. And, if you turn off at the light switch, mine always "forget" every configuration, as the lights don't store anything locally in memory when power at the switch is cut, and they don't retrieve stored settings from the cloud when reconnected via wifi. I have to swing by with my mobile phone to reapply the settings. So many great things about these lights, but too many dealbreakers.
@@plasmatronic couldn’t agree more.
My lights work amazing, I think the lumary app is garbage
@@michaeltallarico403 mine worked great for about 9 months. Then they all slowly stopped working one by one. Hopefully yours last much longer. They’re cool lights just not great quality for the price IMO.
@@HomegrownHowTo I’ve had mine since 2020 and the only issue is the app
They do look like great lights. I upgraded, our two can lights to leds, but not like these. Will consider it . Excellent demonstration and review.
Thanks Memphis! Hope all is well!
Great video thanks dude. Help me set up and enjoy. Blessings to you and the fam. Continue to enjoy
Glad it was helpful
Thanks for the video. I got the recessed Lsd3a1 model, and im about to install 7 of them in a bookcase this week. Your review and lack of quality have me concerned now. Should I look elsewhere for different lights?
Honestly I would. But if you install yours hopefully they last you! Cool lights for sure.
Have you experienced any disconnects and if it happens, do the lights start to blink until you reconnect them to wifi/hub? I had some FEIT bulbs that always disconnected after a power outage and they would blink non-stop until I reset them. It was a major PITA, since it happened when I would be out of town and had to have friends come over to turn off the disco in my house.
They only time I’ve had them all disconnect is if the kids turn off and on the lights repetitively 3+ times- this causes them to blink. This sequence “resets” the lights.
A couple of times one light has disconnected from the group but it just goes a bright white color and does not flash. Only time I’ve had flashing if they get reset as described above.
@@HomegrownHowTo Thank you, good to know.
Thanks for the tip on how to create a group; I could not figure that out. Do you happen to know if you can offset the scene animation between multiple bulbs?
No problem. I’m not sure I know what you mean by offset between multiple bulbs.
@@HomegrownHowTo Sorry, I mean offset the animation (each bulb moving between a scene). Bulb A flashes between green and purple, and Bulb B flashes between green and purple, but the two are flashing in a sequence (A is on purple, while B is on green, etc.).
The only thing I can think to do is start Bulb A's flash sequence, and then start Bulb B slightly later, hoping to catch them at different points.
This does seem like something smart bulbs should be able to do, especially once they're grouped.
@@cmography gotcha makes sense now. Yeah they do only go in sequence together when grouped. As far as I know you cannot offset the light within a group. You could potentially creat a couple groups within a series of lights and just start them at different time to get the offset colors. I’ll try to play around with it and see I can get them to offset within a group but just by looking at the app real quick I don’t think you can.
@@HomegrownHowTo I appreciate the info. I do love the lights.
@@cmography they are pretty sweet! I have loved everything that I have gotten from Lumary.
Any other recommendations since these aren’t recommended?
You can check out Govee. I haven’t used them before but I’ve heard good things.
So I'm thinking about putting two of these in, one over the stove, and one over the sink! There are no lights there right now, meaning no recessed cans. Do I even need to have recessed cans to start with? Or can I just cut a circle (hole), cut the screw in base off and just hardwire these in, and pop these bad boys in? Thanks
These lights specifically need a can. But Lumary makes these exact same lights where you don’t need a can. Just cut the hole. Each light has its own junction box to wire it in. Then the light has some clips that hold on the sheet rock to keep them in place. 👍
@@HomegrownHowTo thanks so much, would you be able to send me, the link, much appreciated! 👍
@@dansloan4242 sure thing!
Here are their canless options:
lumarysmart.com/collections/smart-canless-recessed-lighting
Can you change the color of the individual lights after you have grouped them together?
You can. Yes.
Can Alexa change the colors on demand or do you have to use the app?
Yes you can with Alexa. The only thing you cant do with the Alexa is turn on the music sync function- that has to be done through the app.
What do the blades go into, I have the tension springs as well but cat seem to get the plates to seat?
Are you using the canned or canless version of these lights? The canned version (seen here) has the metal wings, when you push the light into the can those wings basically grip onto the can.
If you use the canless version (can also be called remodel lights) there is a spring loaded clip that will hold the light into the opening by hanging on to the sheetrock. You cannot use the canless version of these to replace an already existing canned recessed light. Hope that helps
@@HomegrownHowTo thanks, the version I purchased has 3 blades, I think I have twisted them in enough to hold.
I have canned lights it’s new construction
@@ddent22 good work! They should hold in the can pretty well. 👍
@@HomegrownHowTo seems like the just scrape along the can, I turned counter clockwise until it seated against the ceiling
Hi, have you figured out how to use lumary lights with a motion sensor?
I have not. Sorry.
With these lights do you need a light switch or keep constant power?
We still use our switches often. Works great either way. I’m sure you would need a switch based off of your city codes, but it would work without one, as long as you have a smart device.
@@HomegrownHowTo got it thank you👍
@@justanrcchannel5677 No problem!
5 months later are they still good?
Yeah they are awesome!
Can the lights change with the beat of music?
They do yes! Pretty awesome feature!
Is the wifi chip in the disc
Yes, I believe so.
Have they gone off line yet? Mine go off linecor un responsive too much.
Yeah they have a few times. Not often though. Are your lights connected to the 2.4GHz internet? If it’s connected to the 5Ghz they can do this more frequently
I have a different product from them, and anytime i lose wifi or dont turn the light on for a certain amount of time it starts blinking to reconnect. Do they only work if connected to wifi?
Good question. The only time I’ve had mine blink (reset) is if you turn off and on the light switch multiple times. The kids do this occasionally and they’ll reset and blink. Rarely one light from the group will disconnect from the Wi-Fi for a few minutes. But overall I’m happy with these.
But when a light disconnects from the Wi-Fi it just turns a bright white, and does not blink
It shouldn't .The problem is you need a mega good wifi router . Preferably like an Asus RT-AX82U AX5400 PROTOCOL.I have about 30-35 peripherals and none drop connection. What I am trying to say is you get what you pay for so therefore you do need to spend some decent money on a router possibly at least 150-200$
It's still a problem with a great wifi router sitting just below the lights. Meanwhile, the Lumary app reports superb wifi connection from each light. I have dozens of wifi devices, including lights, switches, etc, and the Lumary retrofit lights are the only devices failing.
How many of these lights did you purchase? I'm thinking about the RBGAI lights because of the back light feature. It looks like a mixed bag on performance
Works with regular switches?
Yeah they power off and on with regular switches as well.
@@HomegrownHowTo Do you have these on dimmer switches by chance? Or just regular toggle switch?
@@juliomayen2220 I just have regular on off toggle settings
they dont work with dimmer switches @@juliomayen2220
They replied me only to use regular switches as dimmer switches will interfere the performance. I will try that option as well. If you are planning on buying, highly recommend not to waste money.
Question can more then one person
What’s the question?
These lights are just waste of money. Just bought four. They do not work
Yeah mine went out after about 11 months of use. They advertised about 20+ years. I don’t recommend them for the price.
@HomegrownHowTo so not worth the spend then? I was close to pulling the trigger on the RGBAI ones. I liked the backlight feature. Comercial Electric makes a recessed downright with RGB no backlight they sell at Home Depot. Would ypu recommend that direction?
@@jasonmcbride1087 no I wouldn’t recommend them. They’re cool lights but just not reliable for the price. The company did replace 2 of the lights for me at no charge but I emailed them again about a week later when more lights went out and they said they’d replace the others if I gave them a 5* written review on Amazon. Shady. 6 of 10 lights went out within a year of instal. I’m sure the other 4 were not far behind.
Why are these a thousand dollars? LIFX looks just as good and not anywhere near as expensive….
