  • This is the last video in this series on moving from Petrobond to green sand. I found a low-cost, easy solution to making green sand and I'm happy to share.
    To paraphrase Senator Palpatine, "my journey towards the green side is now complete!"

    Great to see you finally put up a new video. If I wasn’t so lazy and busy all the time I’d def make the green sand but for me, petrobond just saves a lot of time 🤷🏻‍♂️great video my friend 👍🏻

    Awesome, a new video! Keep them coming Perry. Personally I really like Petrobond. The mess is the biggest negative but it is manageable. The smell has become somewhat nostalgic as it reminds me of many hours of fun projects. My wife, however would disagree. As for the price, there's a website selling it for $155 shipped for 105 lbs which seems very fair. This is just my two cents. I found this video very informative, thank you.

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  4 роки тому +1

      Well, for a rich young man such as yourself, I suppose that price isn't an issue 😄 It would cost me $20 for 100lbs. Of course I had to drive down ant get the sand.
      My wife absolutely hated the smell and smoke that would fill our garage, even with the doors open. 😄
      I still have that bag you sent me. I promise I'll do something with it at some point, really I will.

      @@swdweeb thats right except in cosmetics they sell it as a magical healing ultra special clay which must be made out of the skin sheddings of the goddess of beauty herself because it is. So. Goddam. Expensive.
      The reason why it's so cheap in tractor supply stores is because it's used as a complements to feed livestock and not obly do they need a ton of it they also need it to be cheap, and selling it in huge bags helps with the price as well. so it's probably the cheapest source of bentonite

    Thank you, Perry, for pointing this series out to me. I am still using Petrobond, for now... It cost too much for me. $180 CDN$ for 30 lbs. Every time I make up a flask, I lose a cup of sand on the floor, up to my nose, and in my ears. It is far from cost-effective in my mind... I have tried to make some green sand, but it is too wet. I will dry it out a bit and see if I can do better next round. Thank you for the information and motivation... Living the dream in Atlantic Canada... Be well...

      Ken, that's pretty incredible, over twice what you can purchase it for down here. I used to treat it as a precious resource as well, cleaning the floor beforehand so I could pick it up afterwards. Crazy.
      Good luck with the green sand, especially if you can make it.

    To pulverize the tidy cat litter (Bentonite) use a blender but, fill it just over (1/2") the blades and let run. It will push it like a liquid up the sides and down the center to blades. If you over fill it will just stagnate in blender and posibly burn out blender motor. About a minute and you have powder bentonite. I did this on 17 pounds of litter before I let the blender rest because it will get warm. Thanks SWDWEEB for the video. I made 5 gal bucket of Homedepot play sand (50Mesh) and Tidy Cat litter (50Mesh).
    works great !

    I have about 4 5 gal buckets of petrobond that I got from my boss. He bought it in a molding bench at a school auction. He never really used it so he gave me the sand. This was atleast 15 years ago. I always had a little trouble with the sand falling apart while molding. I just got back into casting and the sand defintely was even worse than before. I know you are supposed to add non detergent oil but I didnt have any so I used some chainsaw bar and chain oil. It seemed to work pretty well. Now my sand holds together much better

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  Рік тому

      You might do a search on the use of isopropyl alcohol in addition to the oil. I read something somewhere that it helped activate the binder or something. I never added it to my petrobond just the non-detergent oil. The non-detergent oil was hard to find where I live, only one auto-parts store seemed to have have it and even then it was "let me go dig around out back and see if I can find it". The sand got blacker and blacker over time. Never stopped smoking or stinking though 😂😂

    When working with dry bentonite or silica sand wear a face mask. You don't want to inhale the dust.
    When I first had an interest in casting I tried kitty litter and it did work but it was a lot of work grinding it into a powder. Later I tried to get proper foundry bentonite. I went to a local foundry with a box of donuts. I then asked if I could get some bentonite. They said they din't have a container to put it in. I said, no problem, and went to the car and came back with a 5 gallon plastic pail. Ten minutes later I was driving away with a pail of bentonite that only cost me a box of donuts.
    The foundry worker who got the bentonite put on a face mask respirator before he went to get the bentonite. Safety first.

    I have seen recipes for green sand that include a small amount of sea coal (very fine bituminous coal; added to form a gas film between the metal & sand) and wood flour (improves water absorption). But the source also said those additives weren't as necessary for lower temperature metals such as aluminum.
    I imagine there are some tweaks to the recipe that could make a difference, but unless you decide to try making some ridiculously detailed patterns, it may not be worth the effort to find that "perfect" greensand. Your castings are great, and it's always a thrill to see the improvements you make.

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  4 роки тому

      Yeah, I know @Luckygen1001 uses coal dust in his sand to improve its qualities.
      I don't think @olfoundryman uses any additives in his sand, It seems to come right out of the ground with what he needs (short of some sifting I believe)

If I mix it with less water it will be much more difficult to carve out channels for the metal to flow... I'm still in the experimental phase :) Great video again!

      Yes, it is the brand that my wife developed. I love it.
      I was shocked at how much traffic there was the day that I recorded that drive. It's normally not anywhere near that busy.
      Our whole state is under a "stay-home" order. I haven't heard if the latest call from the president to go until April 30 is in effect here now as well. I assume it is or will be very soon.
      I think most people would be surprised (well those that haven't used green sand) at how dry my sand is. The only time I've seen problems in my surface was when I mixed it too wet and I think the steam deformed the surface. I have yet to see my sand cause any sort of porosity.

    I tried making my own greensand, starting with playsand, which was WAY to coarse. I got some sieves like you, but the time and effort was a LOT. Grinding up cat litter (they don't all use bentonite clay, BTW) took HOURS and made a huge mess. For all the time and effort the castings were mediocre. I'll stick with Petrobond. Yeah, it costs almost as much to ship it as the price for the Petrobond itself, but when compared to the 10 or so days trying to make greensand, it's well worth, in my opinion!! Time is money, right?

      @swdweeb  2 роки тому

      If I didn't have access to the sand and bentonite that I use, I'm not sure I'd make it either. I spent several hundred dollars getting muller made so that I can make it without a lot of effort on my part. I sell it but most of the cost to the buyer is in covering the shipping. I don't actually make all that much on the sand itself. www.plmfoundries.com/product-page/green-sand

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  Рік тому

      Don't know about plaster powder. Would it harden after the water was applied? I've also been told, but have not tried it, that plaster reacts with things like aluminum and releases gas into the mold. Again, I've only been told this.
      I've also been told that sand-blasting sand is not good sand for molds. I think it has to do with the shape of the sand granules. I've never tried to make it with sand-blasting media so I don't know.

      I've heard that calcium (shells) may have adverse affects on the casting but I don't have any experience with it. You can always try given that the cost is so low. You're going to have to have some sort of binder, pure sand won't have the green strength you need for your mold to hold together. I've been told that ceramics supply houses are a source for bentonite as well. You can buy it in small/expensive quantities on places like Amazon as well.

    Great video. Can you say generally how much use you get from a batch of green sand? Suppose you had a 25 lb batch of green sand. How many times can you reuse it making your flag casting, for example? I ask because after about fifteen pours reusing the same green sand on a project roughly the same size as yours, I'm starting to see small gas bubbles (from steam?) on the casting, and I wonder if I have burned out the clay and lost permeability in this batch. Thank you.

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Fred, I think you're spot on with clay burnout. As the clay burns out you probably need to use more water as a binder.
      I haven't really kept track of how many pours I do before refreshing the clay. It depends on so much, how big the pattern is, how hot the metal is (aluminum versus bronze). I basically add a little when I start to notice the sand is getting weaker. I don't add a ton of clay either.
      I typically mull about 35-50 lbs of sand at a time. I rarely use it all but I might as well do it all rather than guessing if I'll have enough. That said, I probably add about 1/3 - 1/2 cup to that much sand. If I were to guess we're pretty close on 15 pours, maybe a little less for me (10ish??)
      Given you make your own greensand, you probably don't need this, but I do sell small quantities of bentonite www.plmfoundries.com/product-page/bentonite-refresh if you need it.

    I followed the Bob Puhakka videos to John Campbell and I come to the conclusion that metal should be basically slowly(but not too slowly) injected from the bottom of the casting moulds. Do you think theres a way to do that at home?

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  4 роки тому

      Yes I do. ua-cam.com/video/hpwxnNlKP14/v-deo.html and any of my bell videos show what can be done in the home foundry.
      In terms of filling slowly, it is really about keeping the sprue, runner and gates full and not sucking air into them or causing causing turbulence by metal splashing about in the mold. If I can find it, I have a video in which I look at a video from Andrew Martin to show what can happen.

      @@swdweeb I think your system is the best way of doing what Campbell says to do while still pouring. But in one video I saw of him at castcon he said that metal shouldnt be poured because it is damn hard to stop turbulence. I'm just wondering out loud, but I'm curious if theres a way to have a feeder on the bottom of a cast and push the metal in from the actual bottom of the mould rather then the side. I imagine it would be hard as hell in a home setting, but from what bob puhakka and Campbell says, professional foundries dont even do that level of sophistication. I dont want to make it sound like I'm critiquing you at all. Seems like your the only one ive come across that even goes to the extent of counter gravity. I'm wanting to get in to casting very much. Your videos are awesome.

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you. Yes I have but its didn't work. I bought one at a hardware store and it never registered the moisture content of the sand, took it back. In my opinion, our hands are the best measure of moisture. I can tell instantly if my sand is too dry or too wet.
      Of course calibrating my brain to making my sand dryer is a constant struggle. I always think it should be moister than it needs to be. 😃

      I go by dry enough to not stick to your hand when you squeeze a handful tightly. And wet enough to give it some strength. The best way to learn how wet you want it is to cast over and over with it. You soon learn. Mull it (stir, shovel over, etc,) then let it sit for several hours and mull it again. It will change when it sits. Moisture content is not super critical over a reasonable range.
      Nice job, , glad you're back. Wish I were.

      I tried to reply last night but it obviously didn't stick. I agree with what both Carl and Andy said before me. My sand is likely drier than you would expect. I do the clump test and as Andy said, you don't want it sticking to your hands, that's too wet. It is a matter of trial and error to get what is strong and not too wet. The more you play with it the better your touch will be able to tell you if it's right.
