- Life in a rural Bulgarian village where you can escape to a simpler place and time. Our Bulgarian village is situated in the Rose Valley in central Bulgaria . Life here is slow and small farming and self sufficiency are a way of life.
Our Bulgarian village is a typical village for the region, being largely agricultural. It is a small village with just a few streets and a village square. There are natural wells on some of the street corners where the mountain spring water can be collected.
An important aspect of village life is the "small farming" that takes place here. Many of the villagers own their own goats, chickens, pigs and horses. Each morning the shepherd enters the village at around five and collects the goats to take them up to pasture. The evenings see them trotting home again - each once separating independently from the herd as they reach their individual homes.
Many of the villagers also keep rabbits and chickens to eat, and for the chicken eggs. Each morning is punctuated with the call of the cockerels and other farm animals. The village is alive all day with the sound of cuckoos, woodpeckers and other native birds, until dusk when they are replaced by the twilight serenade of the farm dogs and the Jaba of the pond frogs and crickets.
Millenniums of wine growing in the region have produced a perfect natural yeast for wine making. Nearly every house has its own grape vines and a still for Rakia - a by product of the grape pressing process.
The village is always a lively place in summer time, people greeting each other in the daytime streets and music wafting through the warm evenings.
Our village is secluded - we have no actual post box, and are still largely hidden from the outside world, which is just how we like it.

I move over in March.. its been 5yrs in the making for me and my partner. I cannot wait to be in our rural village. And yes, I have no desire for little england but do want to spend time with our amazing bulgarian neighbours x
Congratulations! It took us nine years to finally come over here for good! And yes, it’s an “must“ to integrate with the locals - we complain in England when people who move over don’t do this 😊 whereabouts are you moving to?💜
@Escape to a Simpler Place and Time we have a place about 40 mins from veliko tarnovo...called gorna lipnitsa. Partner has gone ahead, I'm finishing packing up here in UK and finishing work.
@@adeleleah3918 that sounds amazing! VT is a lovely area - we almost moved there ourselves, but it’s quite a distance from the airport. Good luck with your new life. Are you able to take early retirement or do you have jobs over here? We were able to take early retirement because it’s cheaper to live here - but we also have a small holiday business with Airbnb. The garden also keeps us busy and I do my blog to keep my mind active! 😃Xx
@Escape to a Simpler Place and Time im taking my NHS pension..it will be small but enough to live frugally. I'd like to say I won't work again but I might do something Internet based if I need .
@@adeleleah3918 I’m sure you’ll be absolutely fine! We survived on too small private pensions for the first few years. Now my husband gets his state pension also. It helps to have some savings in case of an emergency, but other than that we’ve managed

@techteam3111 unfortunately, some people here are very prejudicial. We live in a predominantly Roma

@@Escapetoasimplerplaceandtime thanks for the information. No, not yet, but I bought a place up north in a village called Oresh 5280, near to Svishtov. Close to the Romanian border. It needs a lot of work. Looking at your place made me wonder if I paid too much for mine 🤔😥

@@Escapetoasimplerplaceandtime yes they definitely tried it on with me, including even raising the price by 2k levs, even though the land turned out to be half of the size advertised..
@@VWApachey that sounds about right! We had some friends they were very interested in a house in the next village, and as soon as they realise they were English, they double the price! It’s so silly because there’s so many houses for sale. And yes, you always need to look at the documentation because the land size is dependent upon the skitzer 😊
