It's always a pleasant sight seeing an iron giant return to steam once more

These locomotives brought back to life are incredible. It brings a nostalgic thought of when I was young and my Grandfather told me about these beautiful machines and how he wanted to build a model train display with me and to have these locomotives running all around the layout. We never got the chance together, but I'm slowly getting to where I can.

The first time I met 4449 was in Dunsmuir, CA in 1975, I was 9 then and it was the first time I saw a live steam engine. I was alone on my bicycle just staring at an amazing beast. The crew saw me and motioned me to come over and they showed me everything then put me in line to see the exhibits, it was like going to Mars, all the things I studied in school were in front of me.

sad that none of them RUN ON THEIR OWN POWER they always have a Amtrak or a metrolink or a diesel of any kind pushing them that's in the middle of the consist

Actually the units behind the steam locomotives are back up units like if needed for sand, brakes, and if the steam locomotive starts having worse problems.

dude those diesels are used to provide electricity for coaches and to help the locomotive when it suffers from a failure or requires help
