Only The Strong - Lyrics
When I'm locked in my room
I just want to scream
And I know what they mean
(One more day of eating and sleeping)
Speak to me, speak to me
I'm not spoken for, I'm ready to talk
Look at me, look at me
I've been broken up and shaken down
Speak to me, speak to me
I'm at the edge of myself I'm dying to talk
Look at me, won't you look at me
Back once more at the point of no return
When I'm locked in my room
I just want to scream
And I know what they mean
Only the strong
#MidnightOil #OnlyTheStrong #10to1
I remember seeing this footage on Beatbox around 1985. Hirst's drumming inspired me to take up the drums and i never looked back. What a band. And they could do this song after song, show after show, year after year and decade upon decade.
Saw them on the spit in 85 playing their red sails tour. Best gig I've ever been to and the reason I play drums.
He (Mr Hirst) did the drumming for the beatbox intro
I remember as a teen this video came on a late-night music video show here in the US. I was absolutely blown away and it changed my look at music forever. Thanks gents!
😊😮❤
midnight oil are on another level to any other band on the face of this planet, this is music with passion and purpose and my god it hits you hard every time
listen and feel and grow to this music because it honestly can help make us all a little more caring and understanding.
also the greatest live band I have ever seen, never felt closer or more connected to a band while they preformed than I have watching midnight oil, it hit me in a primal place and produced some of the greatest love and joy I have ever experienced.
I hope their music continues to find the right people at the right time for the rest of time.
Wow... you've perfectly described my experience seeing the Oils as well. Yes, hits you in some primal way. I experienced total euphoria (drug-free) when seeing them live. They're one of those "sum of the parts" bands -- Hirst's drums/vox, Garrett's vox/persona, Moginie's/Rotsey's guitars, Gifford's/Hillman's bass... it all amounted to this incredible force of nature.
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Totally agree , the best band in the world
Love this comment 💯 agree punk rock af!!
Well said ,I totally agree
Nothing beats the Oils in concert.
Couldn't agree with you all more... I've been lucky enough to have seen the Mighty OILS 50+ times (1980-2022)... and it's a Spiritual Experience each time...Best Band in the World... HANDS DOWN❤
I was 13, my mates told me to tune into JJJ and listen to a live concert of Midnight Oil (On the Water concert). It was past my bedtime so I listened with headphones - my intro to the Oils & JJJ - lost in aural bliss. I had never heard anything like it. It was love at first listen. Then I got the video of the concert and was mesmerized by Peter Garrett's dancing - it was the perfect expression of his vocals and the bands sound; synesthesia. Nothing like it before or since. The energy of Rob Hirst was infectious and the tone in his arms inspired me to hit the gym. I got educated about the other side to America (the non Disney side). And this song - Only The Strong - was always the last song I played on my Walkman before I hit the oval to play a game of junior footy. The passion in the song pumped me up and I felt like I could take on the world. There are many things that blow me away about the band but number one is the fact that they sound as good today as they did nearly 50 years ago. I didn't get to see them live until '87. And i heard all the stories about this show they did at Kooyong years earlier - I would love to have been old enough to see them then, 10-1 is still one of my favourites!
Yer awesome bro, I love that "take me back factor". We were so fortunate to have a great band like this to grow up to. Cheers from Oz
That Kooyong concert was spectacular
Goat Island - I was there. Won tickets on JJJ, hitch hiked from Qld Sunshine Coast and made it just as the ferry was about to leave. Best night ever. Mognine gave me a beer (he was carrying 5), after the gig. Chilliest dudes - happy to talk to everyone and sign shit. The dude dancing on stage to I don't wanna be the one was my house mate Stachel. Mad bugger.... man we pulled some roots after that gig was aired on TV. Famous in Coolum we were Lol
@@craigwilliams2405 that makes you royalty! and rewarded for it too...lucky bugger
"When I'm locked in my room
I just want to scream
And I know what they mean
Only the strong"
I'm at a loss of words to describe how much this band means to me❤️🎶It was 1983, this song on my mind as a ten year old looking out a bedroom window and wondering about life.
The oils also inspired you to express yourself. Well said, my friend.
The best part is they sound as good or even better now... and the energy, still the same!
I saw both the Ramones and Midnight OIl at festival hall in 1980. It rocked.
Festival hall ! Grew up in Altona. Oils along with ACDC were the first two bands I saw live.
Holy cxxp man, I just went back and remembered where goosebumps came from. Back once more at the point of no return!!!! Rip me a new one. Love peace and oilness.
Another great Australian band. Cannot be ignored.
i wish we could live it all again
Have I accidentally clicked on 1.5 speed ? ;-) What amazing energy !!
My introduction to this was through their live album 'Scream In Blue'.
Live albums can be so hit and miss but boy oh boy did they hit with that one. 💥
If there's a better live album, I have not found it.
I was 13 back then and had never heard of the Oils. I'm glad I made up for that.
I watched Peter Garrett climb the rafters at Selina's Coogee Bay Hotel, while the band played Wedding Cake Island, strong, fit bastard in 1986 was Pete the freak. Classic times . Support Aussie live at Selina's once again . Rack off DJs and techno music , please. The Oils live at the Enmore, promoting the species EP my favourite gig of all time , sweaty stuff back in my youth
This is music! The Oils forever!
Midnight Oil Redhead Beach Newcastle one of the best concerts I have ever been to,
One of the world's most underrated acts.
I wouldn't say Midnight Oil are an underrated Australian band, internationally. They are more of the well known ones, if not the only band people overseas see as an Australian band.
There is nothing underrated about Midnight Oil. One of the greatest rock bands of all time. Hands down. Peerless.
Underrated by who?
@@MilkoOfficialChannel People who don't rate them very highly or don't think much of them. Why do people have a problem with me calling Midnight Oil underrated. That's usually considered a compliment but some people are apparently taking objection. It's incredible.
Greatest Australian front man, right there.
Friggn amazing wat an era in oils live music
The one n only MIDNIGHT OIL
1982....I had 8 years old, say I missed it all!
This song got me through my child hood, 👌👍🇦🇺Thanks 2 u❤️🌺🙏
Universal love 4 the Oils!
Awesome.
My special forces 😍🥰
Off the charts, amazing
Oils at their best
There was a version of this that had a great backstage preamble that included Rob Hirst's nerves and energy.
It has been blocked.
This VEVO version, while appreciated, has unfortunately buried Jim Moginie's guitar sound in the live mix.
raunchy el ronk the Scream in Blue live cd version of Only the Strong is the best
2JJJ ABC recently released this backstage version you mention on UA-cam! You can now enjoy it again! 😁
Ha, Hirst is like, "Keep up, boys!"
still pulls me apaaaaart
THE WORLD NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SAY MIDNIGHT OIL!!! DONT EVER STOP MAKING MUSIC!!! PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW THAT WHAT PEOPLE ARE DOING IS WRONG!!! THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF EVIL PEOPLE, PEOPLE WHO DO EVIL THINGS, AND PEOPLE WHO SEE EVIL THINGS BEING DONE AND DONT TRY TO STOP IT. PLEASE NEVER STOP MAKING MUSIC!!!!
this concert was simulcast on fm mmm in 1982 and when we were there it was pinnacle
spoon surfer I think you'll find it was Double J. Kneeboarders rule. Yewww !
Just like Vincent can wait so can the oils! ❤️🙌🏼
Just ponder this line for one moment: 'back once more at the point of no return'.
Lenda !!!
very good drums time from Rob Hirst from 3.05 to 3.14 : )
When I said the Oils have a punk energy, it's what I mean !
In 2020 PG, hasn't lost any of it at 67yrs!!!!
Its called sprint music of thier creation
Australia's greatest punk band of all time!
@@tamarabell1265 hmmmm nah the saints first 100% radio birdman probably second - blow hard, Fat and pitchfork probably before Oils.
❤
Great band
Omg look at these fresh-faced babies
Holy smoke..!! ⚡
One of my favourite Midnight Oil songs, from my favourite Midnight Oil album. A pity the sync if off, but great performance.
So apropos for the times.
When they were young.+
Oh man where is the rest of this concert?! Rob Hirst is such a powerhouse.
try midnight oil live at the capitol....
Please play byron bay asap u r in Sydney come on while no lockdown!!
It's everybody's fault concert Newcastle 1 of alot of live oils I've seen grew up with red sails Nd 10 to 1 etc best
irado!!!
Come Back!!!!
RIP Bones Hillman
This whole concert, and another concert, called "oils on the water", are available on DVD in Australia. I think both concerts are on the same DVD. I will research and get back with the details.
My most played DVD
This is Oils at their fucking best
Aaaaaaaaahahahahaahhahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaahaau PURE ENERGY!!!!!!!!
Look kids.... music
Holy fucking shit
Noah Schryver What brought that on? 😊
delicioso!
Man! Get the sync straight. Also only 1 guitar is in the mix (you're missing half the song). Still the Oils plow you over with integrity, truth & intensity. That alone says enough for this fantastic music.
Yew
Where’s Moginies guitar? I have this on VHS and the mix was SO much better. This is a tradgedy. Whats going on? Also where is the dressing room scene? Thats when the track started.
They look like a coiled spring playing this song. Sound mix is a bit off but this uptempo version KILLS.
Bruzz!!!.
Better than the studio version but oils were best live.
At their peak in the eighties?
There's something seriously amiss with the sound here - very little of Jim's guitar or Pete's vocal. Compare to the DVD release from which it came and other clips from the same show here.
So the good quality recording of this has been blocked but they leave the one with shitty audio up... what a shame.
Jim's volume was way too low.
I really wish someone would go back and remix this. Most of Jim's guitar is way back in the mix and even Martins drops out towards the end.
Hellhunde64 its a bit weird
The srereo version is much better.
No hablo Ingles
Die Politik frisst alle auch den Sänger :-(
was hast du geraucht???
what I find interesting is the crowd are suburban kids getting into this political band _ they rocked as FK which helped
Loved this contact with humanity when I was studying in a cheap under stairs hideaway trying to finish my degree and dreaming of killing the neighbors dog.
Jim Moginie's guitar isnt in this live mix whatsoever

Not the original sound for this performance. The real one is SO much better.
There used to be a copy with the original audio mix on here but now it's gone. Really wish I had downloaded it.
This has been sped up, sadly. Even the audience looks twitchy

The Main Guitar is not in the Mix . Epic fail
Oils before they become woke and lost the plot
Yeah agreed ..absolute nutters now
This mix is a bit rubbish, missing one guitarist!
