For me, between these two it would be the RAV4 Prime XSE all the way. I'd have to do some serious number crunching to decide if the roughly $7000 difference over the Hybrid XSE would make sense, but it's my pick of the comparison here. If cost were no object, it would be a no brainer! The fact that the Prius Prime (in fact several in the Prius line...) don't even have a space saver spare, but a "tire repair kit" is a show stopper. When I bought my previous car (which I just replaced with a Camry Hybrid LE!), my choice came down to Toyota Solara, Honda Accord, and Nissan Maxima... one huge factor that helped tip the decision to the Toyota was that it was the only one of the three that had a real spare tire. The other two had the space saver. The impact of how that plays out in real world situations make the space saver an option I can live with, the lack of even that gets a car scratched off my list.

There's always one or two of those folks. You're video's are awesome Jeff. I wish I'd of saw your video's before I bought the 2021 CRV EXL. I am still thinking of seeing what my Toyota dealer will give me towards a RAV4 Prime. Hmm? Keep up the good work sir.
Great stuff Jeff. I have both in family (base Prius Prime and Rav4Prime SE) and they all serve different purpose. Prius is the office car for 1 person (set route, know how much electricity and gas is needed, not hauling more people or things), where as Rav4 is our anytime/anywhere car. With discount and federal tax credit Prius Prime is a crazy deal (especially with rising gas/electricity prices); Rav4 not as good $/mile but it's really the beset hybrid (space/performance/AWD) Toyota has right now.

You've said that Prius Prime has federal tax credit? is that still going on right now in 2024. What about RAV4 Prime, is there any federal tax credit? Please advise. Thanks in advance.
No more credit unfortunately. We purchased the Prius Prime right before COVID lockdown, and Rav4Prime right after lockdown, so benefited both times. Right now if you lease then buy (and get Toyota's lease cash which I think is $6500 for Rav4 Prime) it's still better than just getting a hybrid.@@akgh2010
Great video. I just have one question. I’m going back and forth between these two vehicles. Still learning about the electric vehicles. With the 25 miles electric mode in Prius and 42 in the rav4, does that mean every time you get into a charged Prius or Rav 4 your first 25 or 42 miles driven respectively will be purely electric and then the hybrid will kick in?
it's up to you how you want to drive it. You can use all the battery then it will drive like a normal hybrid (gas engine at higher speeds), or you can actually control the vehicle by toggling it in and out of battery mode (battery at lower speeds, gas at higher). They're completely different models, of different design generations, with different form factors, filling different needs. Folks know how much space they need/want, how much all-electric range they can regularly use, and how much power/fuel economy will make them happy. I'd love a RAV4 Prime, but I could get by very well with a Prius Prime, and will probably by a used one for less than half the price of a new R4 P - used P.P.s are some of the best deals on reliable, gas efficient vehicles in existence. (Just check to make sure the previous owner kept the battery ventilation filters clean - the biggest factor influencing battery health.)
They are both great cars / suv's. Would love either. If pressed I would take the Prius. Love the efficiency of the Prius. I have the 2012 Prius Plugin (predecessor to the Prime). Over 73K I am averaging 92 MPG. I take lots of short trips that is how I achieve that MPG. Only routine maintenance has been done on it. Thank you for the go through and both these vehicles. I’m currently going to downsize from three vehicles to one. I have a VW convertible beetle 2003. 2016 Honda Civic and a 2016 Chrysler town and country. I’m 72 and looking to downsize my house and my car fleet. I would like to look at the new Toyota Corolla sport utility hybrid. I’m looking to go hybrid and I feel most comfortable with toyota Social they’ve been making them for a long time.
Had a gen 2 Prius, now have the R4P. So far I love it. It's better in every way, except storage compartments. I also no longer hit my head on the hatch, because it's taller.
From the look, the acceleration speed, the gas mileage, the length, the screen (LE model), the price, the higher up speedometer, All but the ground clearance is better in the Prius than in the rav4 in my opinion
Rav4 Prime for me. We tow a small travel trailer in summer - well under the Rav4 Prime tow capacity - and when we're not towing, the electric only range will handle most local trips for us year round.
Great video... Glad your finally evaluating the Prime... Hope you have time to do your famous RAV4 tutorial... Few things are different option on the RAV4. Plug it in and start it, it will ask you if you want room mode or not... Cheers!!!
I really want a Prius. Need to go test drive. I’m afraid it will be too low to get in as it if. Does anyone have experience with older persons getting in ad out?
If you are going on a long trip and you are out of electricity and the engine switches to gas, The Rav4 Prime gas engine can recharge the electricity to 80%. The problem is that most users need help figuring out where to activate that feature. Plus, I don't know of another PHEV that has that feature. That's a big selling point, but I don't understand why Toyota does not promote that feature.
I work in a bit of a niche industry and while I have good job security, the actual locations where I can work are very limited due to the unusual nature of the work. The building I was in was so old though that they eventually decided to build a whole new facility across town. When that happened I decided to just buy a house right near it since it was in a pretty nice area and I plan to continue working here all the way to retirement. On top of that I barely drive anywhere other than the essentials which are right nearby and visiting family. Planning on getting one of these and basically saying goodbye to the gas station lol. With both of these having over 40 mile range I should never have to use gas other than special occasion to leave town. Now that I think about it, the furthest place I drive to in the city is the zoo which is 22 miles away, so my zoo trips there and back will just barely touch the gas for a few miles 😃
What’s up Guys! I’m in a pickle.. Currently in a 02 Camry with 295k miles. Do I make the drive to see Jeff in North Carolina for a refresh or do I keep ol’ faithful for another 100k Miles?
@@skyb469 It's economics. Your vehicle has exhausted it's market resale value. So it wouldn't sell for much of anything, but it is also fully paid off (I hope). If you want a new car experience, sure, that's worth some money to have a new car with better sound, modern amenities, and unmatched safety features. If you're purely concerned about the savings of buy vs keep, in your case, it may be cheaper to keep what you got. If you do driving everyday as part of your job, however, the fuel savings might be significant. The best fuel economy on a Camry that model year was around 25 avg, 30 highway. Trippling your MPG in a Prius Prime, or doubling in a regular Prius would be huge savings in this case + modern tech.
I've owned both a Prius Prime and Rav4 Prime. The Prius Prime may look spacious in the hatch but so many times the opening isn't large enough to get things in and out. The raised battery back is an issue. I love my Rav4 Prime. Additionally, although the Prius gets better gas mileage the longer range of the Rav4 works better for me as I rarely have to use gas at all. The Prius wasn't enough for even a round trip outing to the grocery store.
I recently traded my 2015 Prius to a Chevy Bolt. Sadly I am on the buyback list. I was torn between the Prius and RAV4 Prime before watching your video. Looks like it’s the Prius Prime for me. I do not care for the large screen but will get the model that is available when I get my buyback check.
That rav4 is a lot of bang for the buck being only 7k more than the prius. A lot of people charge for free at their workpiece and 50 miles electric is enough for most commuters. The prius isn't a bad option either both are great in there own rights
I’ve had 3 4Runners and I have loved them especially for their towing purposes. Now that I have sold the RV it pulled I’m really thinking one of these two primes. I’m not sure which one yet- I guess it’s which one my local Toyota can get faster. My older two will be getting cars this year and next and I’m ready to downsize. I’ve had a Ford Focus electric and I really miss the plug in - these are the best of both worlds. I’m sure they will make a 4Runner sone to compete with the Wrangler E . I would rather get into one that’s been tried and tested. I’m super grateful you made this comparison although I totally can dig owning either of them.
Maybe it's just me but I really don't understand why people advertise how fast a car can go. Like you do know we live in a country of rules. I'm not racing when I'm going back and forth to work. I just want to get there and a reliable fuel efficient vehicle. I want a racing car I would join NASCAR
Hey Jeff! Could you do a family car comparison? Corolla SE vs Camry SE? In the market in the next few Months and would like to see how they compare. :)
I lover them both! But I prefer the R4P! It depends how your lifestyle is, if you only want economy fuel rang and don't want to plug every time, go for the Prius. But are you a person that wants to charge everytime when is possible, than the R4P is a no brainer!!!
No incentive in Canada for RAV4 prime. No timeline for delivery....$5k federal rebate for ON makes it $45k inclusive all taxes....almost $19k higher than US
Depend on your life style, I prefer Prius prime, RAV 4 is not deserve over $50K, the price of RAV4 prime in Japan is very reasonable but in US, it’s ridiculous just for 300HP, you have a many options if small SUV price will be around $50K
@@pambritz3166 XSE fully loaded. After the $7500 tax rebate, the SE is $33-34K. That sounds reasonable to me. I can spend $50k but not on a Toyota. Lexus? Sure if it's a plug in with a tax credit
42 Miles EV range made it possible to drive 4,400 miles and one tank of gasoline after 6 months. Prius Prime 25 miles of EV range is not going to cover the average daily commute. You will use more gasoline vs the Rav 4 Prime
That sounds logical, however how do you explain the $600 vs $800 yearly estimated gasoline cost for the Prius vs RAV4 in the video? For me personally, i work from home and 25 miles is more than adequate for any errands/ local trips with stop and go traffic in EV mode.
Don’t forget that there is a sizable difference in price between these two vehicles - Prius prime limited - out the door is about $34k, rav4 with same options is over $50k - two difference vehicles, two difference costs eh?
Prius Prime:. It does it all. It can last up to 20 years if properly maintained. No tickets for speeding. If gas goes up to ten dollars, I will be the only person on the road.
Note to all My prime is great but i make sure to use up the gas within 1 to 3 months never keep the gas in the tank any longer. It will ruin engine. I run mine almost all electric but one day a week or so i ll run the gas engine, when i put gas in I only put in one half gallon. Using for city commuting, if pandemic clears and road trip planned then i ll fill it good luck and god bless to all
If I need a tank I would buy the Rav 4! It's so aerodynamic, it reminds me of a brick! Oh, can't get one right now.......they were RECALLED! Sorry, I do like sedans.
I love the RAV4 Prime in the terms of power and huge boot, but right now I am actually considering swapping my Corolla HB 2019 for Prius Prime 2021 (more space for kids in the back). Luckily for me, I can go for maxed out Prius and not have that unergonomic 11" touchscreen. We get 8" with !buttons! around here :D You can't believe how happy I am that that big screen is not available in Europe.
How can U compare a sedan against an SUV lol! SUV Fast big but running cost are much higher 😎nearly twice as much to buy 🤣🤣🤣meanwhile the prime is 25-35! ev range need to know how to drive sorry much more affordable running costs are nothing like 15 inch tyre🤣 and even in hybrid mode is more efficent than the regular hybrid
Ha ha thank you for your comment and for watching. I’m certainly not trying to say one is better than the other. I am giving people a comparison between two popular choices in the Toyota Prime market right now. Lol yes I understand there are differences. Big differences.
I would describe the rear seat leg room in the Rav4 as very average. With the driver seat in my normal position I have about 2 inches of knee space in the rear. The Rav4 Prime dives alarmingly under heavy brakes and definitely does not like sudden lane changes (feels very unhappy). Road feedback is close to zero. Toyota really needs to do work tuning the Rav4 Prime's suspension. It would help if they had magnetic struts but at the very least they need stiffer springs. The option packages are (typical for Toyota) quite absurd and clearly thought up by a moron. What I wanted was power front seats (both) with memory for the driver. Why would you sell a power seat WITHOUT memory? Does Toyota imagine that all vehicles with power seats are only driven by single persons? So every single time my wife gets into the car, she has to go through several minutes of adjusting the seats. Of course we could've opted for a fully equipped XSE, but spending an extra $5K+ to get the ONE feature we wanted? Doh! So we opted for the Rav4 Prime SE and paid a (modest) $5K mark-up. I have to say the mark up left a very bad taste in my mouth. It was worse in southern California where they wanted a $10K markup AND you had to buy a ton of add-ons I didn't want. Toyota, don't expect ANY brand loyalty from me in the future. You had the choice to stop dealers scalping buyers and you failed. I also had to fly to California to buy one because a year after the car was introduced I still can't buy one in Arizona. At any price. The Prime SE, even with all packages (which I have) doesn't get seat memory. Or indeed passenger side power seat. Or indeed A/C zone control for the rear seats. I still have to put up with a stupid moon roof I will never use. In fact I'll probably delete it asap because in the South West features like moon roofs and panoramic roofs are beyond useless. Toyota should understand this. I intend to make extensive use of my roof rack so I really don't want an expensive chunk of glass in a vulnerable location under the rack. Nor do I wish to be fried like a bug under a magnifying glass. There are also some basic features missing too. For example, the window control panel next to the driver is not illuminated, so at night you have to grope around for the buttons. The interior lights are dim and the lights in the cargo area are non-existent. What was Toyota thinking? Fortunately there are after-market kits to fix this problem, but on a car that that cost (including tax) over $50K?????? Really? And don't get me started on the glacially slow rear door lift. So to fuel economy. This is where the Rav4 Prime is standout. I'm getting better than the sticker both in hybrid and electric mode. Indeed my combined rating (which includes long distance driving) is 44.6mpg. I can get up to 46 miles on pure electric too (around town) dropping to 38 miles at freeway speeds. This is best in class. Acceleration is fun. Especially when it comes to overtaking. I recently drove into the mountains, climbing from 1,000 feet to almost 8,000 feet. Some protracted, steep climbs, overtaking 18 wheelers, lane hogs and RV's. The power management is excellent - the system conserves electric charge so you can boost past slower traffic on the climb. On only one occasion did I find the power dropped off the edge of a cliff, and even so the overtake power was back less than a minute later. In hind sight I think that long climbs might be a good reason to put the Rav4 in charge/hold mode so you have some reserves before starting the climb. Otherwise, though, the Rav4 acquitted itself brilliantly - battery management is well thought out. Gizmos. The lane hold is a useless feature -especially at night where I find the Rav4 often drifts over lines. Daytime is much better but when lines diverge (such as off-ramps at freeway exits) the lane-hold mode gets confused. I doubt I will ever use this feature again and my wife agrees. The adaptive cruise control, on the other hand, is excellent - no complaints whatsoever. Blind spot monitoring? Needs to be more obvious. I find the orange warning light is near useless in the daytime but works adequately at night. Needs to be beefed up. That said, it does work, and after some time with the Rav4, checking for the warning becomes second nature. So I'm okay with this feature overall. I wanted a trail hitch (and electrics). The quote from the supplying Toyota dealer was $1800. This is beyond absurd. I bought the OEM trail hitch for $260 and a recommended electric package online for less than $200. Then fitted it myself in an afternoon. It's an excellent class 2 hitch which (from a strength perspective) is rated at 3,500lbs. However the Rav4 Prime can only pull 2,500lbs. That's okay for me but unremarkable given the weight of the vehicle. By comparison my old V6 Isuzu Rodeo can pull 4,500lbs. The OEM hitch is really good. You have to cut a hole in the bumper plastic (edge trim is included with the OEM hitch) but I like that it doesn't stick out and the height is decent. I do like the entertainment system. Really no complaints aside from screen resolution. Everything looks a bit fuzzy, all the time. Needs a much sharper (higher resolution) screen. But it gets the job done and accommodates my wife's iPhone and my Android Moto G7 phone quite adequately. Sound system is good but unremarkable. Visibility all round is excellent. The blind spot monitoring is useful but due to good visibility it's hardly necessary. I would say forward visibility is best in class (we drove many other comparable vehicles). A/C system could be, should be, better. At $50K I expect center console vents in the rear as standard, but for that you'll need the XSE version I believe. For Arizona this is a really stupid omission. If rear seat comfort is important, you will need a fully equipped XSE. Fortunately our kids are long gone but it's disappointing and Toyota need to rethink this feature for the American market. The equivalent Hyundai Tucson Hybrid comes MUCH better equipped in almost every category. So am I please I bought the Rav4 Prime SE? Overall, yes. I wanted the combination of economy and performance and I wasn't disappointed. But the Rav4 Prime in terms of features and road holding is very ordinary. It does need better tires but that's not going to fix the fundamental handling issues. Features, and feature packages, are horrible. Toyota should take a lesson from the Hyundai (Tucson) which is much better thought out. To be honest if I were buying a pure hybrid I would've bought Hyundai Tucson over Rav4 XLE Premium. The Tucson has more power, better features, superior warranty, and looks better. That said, I wasn't too keen on the added complexity of the Tucson's turbo while the eCVT in the Rav4 (uses planetary gear system) is best in class and likely to prove more robust in the long term. I was also very uninspired by choice of color. In the South West the selection is spectacularly limited. I would've preferred Blue Flame (not possible) but even the Blueprint and Supersonic Red colors are next to unavailable here. Yet every time I see a test review, it's in one of those two colors. That's because they look good! My only choice was white - which in Arizona is a very practical color since I don't burn my hand on the paint work in summer! Still, it doesn't excite me. Toyota's paint colors are uninspired. I had to settle for Super White. Believe, there's nothing super about it. As a personal observation, Toyota needs to refresh the design, rethink the packages on the Rav4 Prime and seriously work on the suspension/handling. LED lighting should be standard on any PHEV. And don't get me started on brand loyalty - I've been a loyal Toyota customer since 1985 but that boat has sailed.
Who wins this battle: Prius Prime or RAV4 Prime? Which one is the best value for the money? Would love your feedback! Jeff
I just bought the Prius prime.
My Prime averages 30miles on a charge, in warm weather. If you drive 70mph or faster on freeway, you won't do as well.

Once a quarter just don’t charge it, run the gas out, and refill with only 5-10 bucks to keep it fresh
the Prius is the only car that you have to worry about the gas in the tank getting old 🤣
All I want is better/the best gas mileage.😂So it’s the Prius Prime for me.
For the WIN!!!

I would like to look at the new Toyota Corolla sport utility hybrid. I’m looking to go hybrid and I feel most comfortable with toyota Social they’ve been making them for a long time.
Love the reservoir cap closure mid presentation !
i hope they redesign Prius Prime so that the battery doesn't take up cargo space
on the original Prius Plug in that area is flat. Once they increased the size of the battery, looks like they had nowhere else to put it.
Had a gen 2 Prius, now have the R4P. So far I love it. It's better in every way, except storage compartments. I also no longer hit my head on the hatch, because it's taller.
Hey Jeff! Keep em coming! I’d like to see a video of your test drive of this RAV4 Prime.
I want a video on how to BUY a RAV4 Prime!! I’ve had my name on a list since October!
You can fold down the rear headrests on the Prius prime to greatly improve visibility.
I thought it was pull-out head rest??
i like the Prius interior better, but the car is too low. They should bring back the Prius V.
From the look, the acceleration speed, the gas mileage, the length, the screen (LE model), the price, the higher up speedometer, All but the ground clearance is better in the Prius than in the rav4 in my opinion
You *could* have used those planes flying overhead to demonstrate how quiet the cabins are on each vehicle. 😉
Better yet, compare the cabin noise of a plane to both vehicles
Please
Can anyone tell the difference between EV Auto ,EVHV in Prius prime 2022?
The Prius Prime looks dated. The RAV4 Prime is very attractive and sits up high.
The Prius Prime *_is_* dated. It's due for an update!
Rav4 Prime for me. We tow a small travel trailer in summer - well under the Rav4 Prime tow capacity - and when we're not towing, the electric only range will handle most local trips for us year round.
Jeff when are you going to have these to sell in Raleigh? My dealer in Wilmington can't even tell me what quarter he might have one!
Great video... Glad your finally evaluating the Prime... Hope you have time to do your famous RAV4 tutorial... Few things are different option on the RAV4. Plug it in and start it, it will ask you if you want room mode or not... Cheers!!!
"Plug It In...Plug It In..."
Dang I should have used that!!
@@Toyotajeff there's always next time!
I really want a Prius. Need to go test drive. I’m afraid it will be too low to get in as it if. Does anyone have experience with older persons getting in ad out?
We need a video tutorial “hybrid for dummies”. We are purchasing a 21 sienna and need to know the different drive modes!
Hi Ashley we are all dummies haha!! I’ll make a video showing how to use each mode for you :)
very good review!!!!!!! thank you!
I just love the Toyota Prius prime and Toyota RAV4 hybrid prime ....I will love to own one of each
If you are going on a long trip and you are out of electricity and the engine switches to gas, The Rav4 Prime gas engine can recharge the electricity to 80%. The problem is that most users need help figuring out where to activate that feature. Plus, I don't know of another PHEV that has that feature. That's a big selling point, but I don't understand why Toyota does not promote that feature.
What about the Avalon?
price (and availability) is a huge difference between these two. there's a gazillion Prius Primes on dealer lots.
Dose 2021 Prius offer any kind of Sunroof ?
Does toyota sell a 240v charger?
What’s up Guys! I’m in a pickle.. Currently in a 02 Camry with 295k miles. Do I make the drive to see Jeff in North Carolina for a refresh or do I keep ol’ faithful for another 100k Miles?
It that’s your only car I might start looking for a new car, your decision though!
How many miles you at now?
315k trouble free!
Thank you - good info
Do they have Apple car play
The typical sedan that they may ask a celebrity to test drive before a premiere award begins.
That rav4 is a lot of bang for the buck being only 7k more than the prius. A lot of people charge for free at their workpiece and 50 miles electric is enough for most commuters. The prius isn't a bad option either both are great in there own rights
Huh? PP xle is 31k. R4P is 50k. That's $19k.
I’m super grateful you made this comparison although I totally can dig owning either of them.
hope toyota makes camry prime and corolla prime
I can clearly see that the new iPad-like display is too high and blocks the center console.
Maybe it's just me but I really don't understand why people advertise how fast a car can go. Like you do know we live in a country of rules. I'm not racing when I'm going back and forth to work. I just want to get there and a reliable fuel efficient vehicle. I want a racing car I would join NASCAR
do the back seats come out of either?
with a socket wrench! 😉 actually don't quote me on that
The next Prius Prime needs to be like the RAV4 P equivalent. The battery power output is there, but the engineers/accountants didn't bother with it
Very interesting :)
Hey Jeff! Could you do a family car comparison? Corolla SE vs Camry SE? In the market in the next few
Months and would like to see how they compare. :)
ARE THERE ANY RAV 4 PRIRE AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME,?
No
You sold me on the prime ‼️‼️🇨🇦🇨🇦
15:32 story of my life
I lover them both!
$50,000?! OMG. Prius Prime Limited for me.
Depends. For someone like me who stays right around town including work I could go on electric all the time.
Jeff, Toyota loaned you this RAV4 Prime for a week and a half, I guess being Akio Toyoda's cousin really pays off.
Haha With all the promotion I have done I should be related
@@Toyotajeff Follow my advice and you'll be sitting at the Board table in Toyota City on day soon ;-)
Get a better noise canceling mic for the wind.
Note to all My prime is great but i make sure to use up the gas within 1 to 3 months never keep the gas in the tank any longer. It will ruin engine. I run mine almost all electric but one day a week or so i ll run the gas engine, when i put gas in I only put in one half gallon. Using for city commuting, if pandemic clears and road trip planned then i ll fill it good luck and god bless to all
When you put the back seats down, they are not flat on the RAV4 prime!
Carbo space in Prius prime very small . Cargo space is not flat it .
Am I the only one who thaught my stomach is making weird noises at 0:45 ?
thought you were going to plug them into each other in the beginning 😂
If I need a tank I would buy the Rav 4! It's so aerodynamic, it reminds me of a brick! Oh, can't get one right now.......they were RECALLED!
Sorry, I do like sedans.
I'd pick a Chinese Plug-in hybrid:
Huawei Seres SF5
Lol, it's only $35 000, but it has 540 horsepower.
Who needs prius or RAV anymore O_o
I love the RAV4 Prime in the terms of power and huge boot, but right now I am actually considering swapping my Corolla HB 2019 for Prius Prime 2021 (more space for kids in the back).
Luckily for me, I can go for maxed out Prius and not have that unergonomic 11" touchscreen. We get 8" with !buttons! around here :D You can't believe how happy I am that that big screen is not available in Europe.
Why is he comparing these two vehicles completely different vehicles and purposes?
9.55" so prius has better gas mileage",thats all i need to know😋
That Prius color is so lame! I rather get the red or the blue one! 👍
I came for the prius-prime review… I may leave with the Rav-prime :)
RAV4 prime
I hope you decide to stick around my channel and follow along with future videos. Have a great week!
Question: which car is a cat or a dog person?
My thoughts:
Prius: cat person
Rav4: dog person (me, me, me)
I would describe the rear seat leg room in the Rav4 as very average.
Great comments. This helped me a lot. Many thanks
