@@GFS695 at 270k miles the first battery finally wore out. It began consuming a bit of oil around 225k miles. I replaced battery with a refurbished unit for about $1K and it lasted to around 325k miles. At that time my daughter was driving it and the shocks were pretty well worn out as well as the interior was showing significant wear. By this point it was consuming about a quart of oil every 1k miles. I decided to help her buy something newer with lower miles. Probably with a fresh battery and some suspension work it could have gone to 500k miles as long as you monitored the oil level very closely.

Although this generation is showing its age I actually think that’s a plus for 2022. They’ve been able to master this generation and I would advise people to buy a car at the end of its generation versus the beginning. You’re likely to get a much better car, one that is more reliable despite the fact that it may not have some features that other cars may have.

I actually love how the prius looks because I don't look at it with that sporty mentality of dominating the road. I look at the prius with the mentality that it's in perfect harmony with the environment. It almost feels like it glides through the road as if instead of traversing forward, it were not really moving at all because of how connected it is with the road and the world outside the cabin. It is the definition of feeling genuine peace when driving a car. The prius carries the soul of a true electric vehicle even though it is a hybrid. Forget about being one with the car, or making it all about you. This car shows you how to reconnect with the world, to step outside your notions and socially constructed ideas about the world and reconnect with nature. Most people are not sensitive enough to understand any of what I just said. The soul of this car is truly far ahead of its time. This is the car of the distant future, a future when humanity has stopped its obsession with agressive insensitive exhilarating driving and has begun to understand the meaning of joy, the meaning of actually enjoying the scenery that is all around us. I'm really not trying to be poetic. I honestly wanted to return the cat 3 days after I bought it because it did not make me feel like an encapsulated king, but rather a citizen of this beautiful world we always zoom by without ever truly paying attention.

@@danmarjenka6361 In my 17 Prime, to have the mpg drop to 42mpg, I've got to be driving 84mph or I've got to be camping/sleeping overnight in it a few days in a row without plugging in. Even the most terrible winter conditions don't drop me to 42mpg. At times, I've "driven it like a sports car" and very few cars can keep up with it on twisty mountain roads. Actually, pretty much nothing can run with it on mountains with big descents and many hairpin switchbacks, after you put good tires on it, pump them up, and aren't afraid to be continuously either at full throttle or regenerative braking. Cars which are "much faster" end up with their brakes smoking if they try to not let you past. Typically, I'd catch up to a car, they'd speed up, and I'd just keep pressure on them going into every corner until I smelled or literally saw smoke from their brakes, then I'd pass them by being able to brake later than them in the next corner, finally using hard friction braking rather than mostly regen. Obviously it's not the fastest car on straight roads, but it's surprisingly good at beating people off the line, basically going 0-30 before you're even across the intersection.

This review is about AWD-e model. An interesting fact about this model about the muffler's shape, color and position. It is positioned lower (so low in fact that there is very little value in the heat shield above it) and painted dark. I owned 2021 Prius AWD-e myself and just recently (after 2 years!) noticed that when looked at friend's Prius Prime of the same year. The Prime's muffler was shiny, sat higher: very close to the aluminium heat shield at the car's bottom. The hole area was then tightly covered with plastic to improve aerodynamics and protect from the dirt. It did feel like Toyota's engineers had to come up with some hacks to allow the exhaust pilpe get under the rear differential to a point that everything does not look as sleek. This muffler's position and the cover-less design were likely responsible for the lower fuel efficiency and lower bottom clearance in the back of the car. Other ideas?

We've always liked how they look...especially the new Generation! It's, also, very easy to completely remove the center console for cleaning...makes it look brand-new!! My dislikes: 1) Unable to replace headlights...you have to replace entire LED assembly ($500-800) so hoping those LED's have a long-lifespan. 2) The tires that came with it when new (NanoEnergy). In our 2017, she only had just under 24,000 miles and the treads were very low and we had a flat. Thankful for the doughnut spare in the 2017 and since the 2021 AWD didn't come with one, I bought one for it. (And a better jack.) 3) That ridiculous fastener/clip that covers the HV Filter. It looks like it unscrews but that's a lie...I end up destroying the stupid things and have to search through my two boxes of various clips to replace it. 4) The UFO speaker in the front! The 2017 doesn't have it but our 2021 does....she is wrapped up in a few layers of pipe insulation to muffle her. The new Rav4 hybrids I hear seem to be even louder!!!

Fun fact, first toyota hybrid that had efour drive was Estima since 2001 when first hybrid version of that car was introduced in Japan. But it is good to see that more models offer that enhanced hybrid 4 wheel drive.
It is really working great on slippery Road conditions. So far had no problems with driving off on snow with my estima.
It also had the exhaust heating of the coolant to warm up the engine faster and my car is from 2013. Was thinking that all hybrids from around that time have it too.
That headlights auto leveling system is mandatory in Europe for any car that has factory HID(xenon) lights equipped.

Thank you for the excellent tour! I always learn new things when I watch your videos. I have a 2018 Prius Prime Advanced which has most of the features you covered. After 3.5 years of owning the car, coming up on 45,000 miles, I can only say it's been exceptional! My total average mpg is 186.8. 95% of my driving is a 20 mile round trip to work. But we do travel in the car as well as make infrequent trips of several hundred miles. I could not be more pleased! If I were to have to replace it, I would either go for another Prime, the RAV 4 prime, or hold out until they have the good sense to make a plug-in, hybrid CHR!

Prius 4 - best car in the world. Still in 2022.
Own one since 2016, problemfree 101.000km since I bought the P4 as a new car. Will keep it for many more years because it is a low fuel consumption car, real average 3,5l/100km year in and out, spacy, roomy, comfortable, very good outlooks and really reliable. It is the hybrid of all hybrids, because it is build as a hybrid and not as a car with an afterwards somehow adepted hybrid system. A big difference.
Drove a Prius 3 for 6 years, the P4 is a much better car and a real improvement.

Great Prius review!!! I owned a Prius 2012 and now own the Prius Prime 2022. It's been a blessing to own now that gas is $5/gal and up. I can plug into a regular 120V outlet I can get 32 miles on a single charge (just enough for my work commute) and in gas mode, I average over 63MPG! It's much more pleasant to drive than my 2012 with a lot less road noise. I can now easily hear my podcasts while I drive whereas, with the older Prius, it was difficult to hear my stereo. It's not a power horse but it has more than enough power for my needs. I'm a very satisfied 2022 Prius Prime owner. Note: Out the door with taxes & license (with the $4500 rebate) I only paid $24K for my Prius.

I love my '19 awd-e LE Prius; my average fuel economy after 50,000 miles is 62 us mpg, and that's using winter tires for four months a year.
In the summer I've seen 88.6 mpg on the dash, which is about 86.8 in reality. It's the best car I've ever bought.
I commute through mountains in western Canada, and the awd-e system works very well to keep traction; it doesn't make it a rally car, nor was it meant to.

Got it March 2020 and it has 64,000 km on the dash, low maintenance at the dealer. I asked for everything single accessory available and looks super refined.

I really tried to wedge myself into it after banging my knees on dashboard and had to force my legs under steering wheel. The seat position was all the way back. The 2 things about my 2012 Prius V wagon better than my former 2012 Prius.. 1. I can see out of my rear window. 2. There is more space in the back to carry ... anything I want a long as it doesn't weigh too much. But, the rear wiper gets used a LOT more as the car pulls more road dust/water in that area. Just a tip. I just took my 2012 Prius V to the car wash. Make sure the hybrid battery charge level is not low! Right after switching to neutral and starting the wash the triangle of death displayed on the dash. The "P" symbol started flashing but I could not switch to park as I was going through a really long car wash with a car right behind me. I made it through the wash and shifted the vehicle into park turning off the vehicle then quickly started the vehicle and drove away before getting hit by the car behind me. The triangle of death was no longer on the dash. The Prius gas engine ran for quite a while recharging the battery, then after the battery was about 3/4 charged, started running normal again. I hope the hybrid battery was not damaged by this. I googled this and someone was actually rear ended by the car behind them in a car wash. Their Prius shut down in the carwash to protect the hybrid battery. Make sure the hybrid battery is sufficiently charged before you enter a carwash!

As usual, love your videos, especially on Priuses. I bought my first in 2008 (2nd generation) and then traded in for a third generation in 2010; convinced my wife to get one in 2011, which we still have but passed to one of the kids. Then I got another one 2017 but my wife balked at the exterior appearance so she bought a 2016 Prius C. What I noticed is that the Prius C got a lot less mileage than the regular Prius and its engine seems to labor. I was looking at a RAV4 hybrid in 2019 but found out that there's huge class action lawsuit against Toyota because of complaints that owners are not getting the mileage as advertised, not even close. One thing I would definitely complain about the Prius starting with the third generation is the driver side headlight. It's a simple task of removing the light bulb (regular or high beam) when I need to change it but it's a pain in the rear to get my hand into the tiny space to unscrew the light bulb and I don't have huge hands. The passenger side is so much easier as there is ample of space.

Very refreshing to get a solid technical perspective from a person who spends much of their time actually working on these cars. Pleased to see the rigid frame member hopefully denying thieves the CC. The highlights you present are so practical and well thought out…they are incredibly knowledgeable and solidly affirm Toyota’s reputation for quality and longevity. Agree with you as to visibility, particularly if you are over 6’. May I also suggest you might consider adding to your very done walk through, by adding a bit more detail on all the dashboard tech that is a bit bewildering at first. I’m still getting used to the rear fire mirror placement and limited visibility. Having just purchased a new 2022 LE after a (six month wait), my goal was to buy the best in class vehicle that will reliably provide the best mpg and be as reliable and long lasting as my 2000 Land Cruiser - but a whole lot less thirsty! Prius are not ugly cars. If anything, many newer cars have the similar shape of the Prius now. They're not that slow either. If you want a fast car then buy a fast car. 0 to 60 in 9 seconds is NOT bad at all. Many non hybrids can't do that. I've looked at everyone of your reviews on Prius and many of them are more negative than positive and millions of Prius owners may disagree that they don't like the looks or speed vs the few that do. Those that hate Prius will never buy one anyway. Just saying. My 2nd gen Prius has over 200k mi with normal maintenance. Many cars don't make it to 150k.

If you nerd out on tech info, the Prius gives you a lot of information. Driving it from Cleveland to Pittsburgh the Prius averaged 75 mpg! None of my motorcycles are even close to that efficient. I also liked how far it can go in EV mode! Overall a great gas saver, and like you said, a pretty nice place to be. It also drives/rides well for what it is! Much better than I had expected. I'm a car/truck guy but, I'm a guy who likes to keep his money in his pocket first! My friends at work used to call it my "vagina"..lol I don't care what they call it. It has been one of the best, most reliable cars I have ever owned and there will always be one I'm my garage. That car would get me to work in snowstorms , when guys would be stuck on the side of the road in their trucks! I cant brag enough about my "vagina" The 2023 even looks sporty!
    Thanks for the great review!

Thanks for this review. Most other reviewers I've seen don't dive into the inside of the car and compares it with other generations.

Hi All, I live in Vancouver BC. Since the day the first Prius came out, they have been used as Taxi`s. The world laughed. Most of our cabs were LTD Crown Vic's and/or old Chryslers'.
Almost every cab is a Prius now, gas being here $2.00 a liter, what a blessing. The reliability
is uncanny. It does not matter or you "Like" it or not, it does its job better than any other Hybrid and/or EV . Guess who`s laughing now. Yellow cab alone do have over 150 Prius Taxis. I am risking now to be picked up by men in white coats, but I like the design!
Thanks Mr Car But, great clip.

Am I the only one who likes the rear body line? And when I say I like it, I'm saying I like it for night driving. It is structured in the perfect spot to block all the obnoxiously bright led headlamps from new pickup trucks, suvs and vans. Personally, it helps me see better at night.

Great review. Gas has been getting a bit out of hand with my C63 AMG and Durango RT so just place a deposit on this exact same car this AM before finding this vid. Love the emphasis on technology and purpose as I travel about 750 miles per week, it is good to hear they are comfortable as well.
