Glorious 70s highlights! Immortal Mel Allen, amazing!

Growing up in the 80s, I loved baseball, TWIB and Mel’s commentary. It was the best of times to watch baseball in the 80s. Now I can venture back and catch-up on 70s baseball highlights too. RIP Mell Allen.

My brother and I always looked forward to watching TWIB. This was way before even ESPN.

The reason baseball and football players make crazy money today is that the kids of the 70s who grew up watching are now mega rich. This show helped solidify our life long fandom. Not a better time than the 70s to be a kid

Could you imagine Dennis Eckersley being 22 years old? Hard to imagine.

    Players were fundamentally better then.

The young Fred Lynn could do everything...run, hit for average and power, and he was a fantastic center fielder...too bad he ran into too many walls (and they weren't as padded as they are today)...

In those days, Fred Lynn seemed the more likely Hall of Famer than Jim Rice, if you had to choose between the two. I remember that catch well; I was living in Calgary then and it was an NBC Game of the Week in some places, and was shown in Canada on Radio-Canada, with French voice-over. I was watching that and the other Game of the Week on NBC, changing channels manually between batters in those pre-VCR days.

Fred definitely could've had a longer career if he hadn't sacrificed his health crashing into those walls. I tip my hat to his fearless playing style.

The footage of the game between the Mets and the Expos was from June 1, 1977; it was shown on Radio-Canada. That was the game where Dave Kingman hit a ball so high that it hit the rim of lights just below the roof of Olympic Stadium, resulting in a lengthy discussion with the umpires. There didn't seem to be a ground rule covering it, and it was eventually ruled a foul ball; I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned as one of the oddities of the week. Of course, Kingman and Tom Seaver were both traded two weeks later in the "Midnight Massacre."

No internet with instant score updates, not even ESPN when they actually covered sports with the days highlights. This was our only chance to see the great plays (and the not so great ones) of the week with Mel Allen, Saturdays during the summer!

This what baseball needs a program promoting the gane, zero politics,. Quality information, bloopers, make it enjoyable.

Joe Torre is in "A False Spring." That was a great book.

The Indians road uniforms were classic! They should have brought back the red jersey as an alternate.

NOTHING BETTER THAN GROWING UP W/TWIB.
NO ESPN, NO CABLE AT ALL & EVERYTHING WAS REGIONAL FOR THE MOST PART.

I am on a pursuit to find footage of every Phillies game ever broadcast on tv. Clips like this are invaluable on my journey. Thank you. If anyone reading this has a channel or trove of Phillies footage please let me know
