In 1964 my high school band played at the Tipperillo pavilion at the NY World's Fair. My BFF and I visited the Vatican Pavillion and saw both "David" and "The Pieta" in person. The Peta was brought from Italy to NY for the fair. It was an unforgettable experience. A guard saw our interest and let us go to an upstairs viewing area where we could look as long as we wished rather than moving with the crowd. My friend passed a few years ago. Before she died she recalled this memory to her sister who later told me how seeing the statue had touched her life. Amazing moment for two 14 year old girls, an experience of a lifetime. I understand your love for it. May God bless your stitching of it.

Oh my goodness I was speechless seeing Santa of the Forest completely finished!!❤️ It is amazing and I believe your children will all be proud to have this one hanging in their home someday. That being said, the other huge Santa patterns you showed that you want to stitch would also be great heirlooms. You had so much good information for getting out stains if an accident occurred while we stitch a project and I thank you for sharing everything you went through and tips to help us. They have been a source of much learning for me as I am fairly new to cross stitch and now have a few pieces that I would like to finish myself. Thank you for all of the time and trouble to make your videos, they are greatly appreciated. Also, I do totally understand the scrutiny you must endure when posting your videos and I wish people were more prone to posting praise when warranted and otherwise keeping their comments to themselves. Thank you for the video. One thing on dye lots if you have 2 different shades and are using 2 to cross stitch with take one thread from the old dye lots and one from the new dye lot and it will mix so well you won't notice the color change. If you stich on linen, it is a tough thread. You need to watch a video on how it is made. I recommend on natural colored fabric to always wash the finished piece. The owner of the Needle Point Joint shop recommended that I use dawn dish soap to wash the piece, and i have never had bleeding, but then i don't use fancy floss. When you wash a piece, it fullers the thread so the close the weave. I used to weave and you always wash the cloth before you finish the piece because a loom pulls the threads so tight that to finish you wash to relax the fiber so you will have the way it will shrink when done. Good quilters usually wash the fabric before starting the quilt to get the sizing out so you also learn if it will blead.

I have had great success soaking in Oxyclean for the 6 hour recommendation. I have some very old cross stitch done by my grandmother or my aunt. The were yellowed, had rust stains on them, etc. They came clean!!! I don't know what the stuff is composed of but it sure did work for me. My daughter has used it too and is also impressed with it. So glad you were able to rescue your piece.

The last epic Santa that you couldn't remember the name...Santa's Wish List. I have a Better Homes & Gardens kit on 27 count evenweave for it. I recently picked cross stitch back up after a decades long hiatus and this is my epic Santa that I really need to finish. I'm about 3/4 of the way, maybe a little more. At any rate it was what immediately came to mind when you started talking about your next Santa, and then there it was! I'm going back and forth on whether I want to jump in to finish that next, or finish the center panel of the Marbek Nativity. The two small panels of that are done, and a good chunk of the center panel, but no starts at all on the two midsized panels. Sigh...that will take ages. But I digress. Your Santa is beautiful! And get some RetroClean! I've used it on some old tobacco stained pieces and it really does work wonders.
Santa of the Forest is going to be stunning in the frame and mats you chose. Beautiful finish and looking forward to seeing your progress on Santa's List. Retro clean I use it all the time on my quilts. Even had an Antique quilt used it on. Stains gone. Glad your Santa is okay. Glad to know another way to clean.

Wel, what can I say the power of thought is great. I was just thinking about you this morning saying " oh i haven't seen her in a bit" followed by "if she shows the Jesus face and says she will stitch it for a third time I am going to have to jump on the bandwagon" So i guess the moral of this story is I need to buy a lottery ticket . What an amazing masterpiece !!! And to do one for each of your children … what a beautiful legacy to leave them. Re: Flying. I’m not crazy about it myself and turn into a white knuckle flier (even curl up into a ball of whimpering jelly) when there is bad or extended turbulence. But when my son and his family were stationed overseas for 3 years, I had to go or not see my grandblessings while they were still young. Soooo … I mustered the courage and did it. I was anxious at first, but learned that international flights are so much more comfortable than domestic. I even dozed a bit and before I knew it, we were landing. The moral of this story is … if you want to see the statue in person … go for it. (PS-I explained my situational anxiety to my doctor and she did give me some meds to have on hand. However, I didn’t take them and not only did I do just fine, I actually enjoyed the flight.)

I stitched Forget Me Not by Hello from Liz Mathew’s. After I’d finished, Diet Coke was spilled in my carrier with my stitching which was not in a project bag. I didn’t know it for several days. It was dry when I found it. Stitched on white Aida with DMC. I stitched this for a sweet aunt in memory of her sister. I HAD to wash it. Never washed cross stitch before. No way does it compare to your Epic Santa, but it was dear to me. Seems like I tried most everything you did. It all came out! Such a relief! Gave it to my aunt with the story to tell. One more thing, your next Epic Santa project choice is my favorite. Love that Santa. My second choice was The Spirit of Christmas. I loved your video. Keep them coming. ❤
I absolutely loved your discussion today. I began to stitch in late 1976 and took some classes from Erica Wilson…she recommended washing the needlework because even our hands have oil that transfer to the threads and fabric. When I came back to stitching after decades of not picking up anything 😳wow, 2020 was a learning curve and wow, what is available now is so beautiful. All this to say Dawn, soak, white vinegar, rinse still is my washing method. I always keep nubbins to test if the thread will run first ( wet and lay on paper towel. Love you so much!

I wash every one of my pieces after sewing. I do it in cold water with vinegar. I have never had any problems with dyed fabric or hand dyed floss. I don’t like framing anything without all the oils from handling during stitching removed . So that it will not yellow over time. I’m so happy for you and your big finish and being Grandma for the first time . Bless you!

Hi Vonna! Santa of the Forest is a masterpiece and so gorgeous. He needs to be up on the wall all year long. You use the exact same things that I have always used to wash all my cross stitch projects. Mine are always such a long-term project because I have so many WIPs. The only other thing I do is if I know I have hand-dyed fibers, I add a Color Catcher. If something is really dirty, I soak mine for 3-4 hours with the Color Catcher, Dawn, and Oxi-Clean in tap cold water. I then rinse well, gently squeeze the water out, lay it between towels, squeeze it again, and iron while still damp on the reverse side of the stitching. You are correct about the steam causing the hand-dyed threads to run and have had the issue but was lucky enough to not have the project ruined by it. I love the mats and frame that you chose, looking forward to the fully framed reveal. Congrats on the new addition coming soon to the family. I love being a grandma enough that I moved from Michigan to Texas to be an active grandma and not a video grandma. I have Walter (named after my deceased at a young age dad) about 56 hours a week and love that I am getting to have a hand in his upbringing. He is such a caring and compassionate little 3-year-old. You will end up changing your schedule once your little one is here to be the most involved you can be. Great job by your hubby for your Christmas gifts. I was going to say that you need to stitch Santa's List since you have 3 copies of the pattern, which to me means that it is very important to you, before you even said it. Thank you for the video. One thing on dye lots if you have 2 different shades and are using 2 to cross stitch with take one thread from the old dye lots and one from the new dye lot and it will mix so well you won't notice the color change. If you stich on linen, it is a tough thread. You need to watch a video on how it is made. I recommend on natural colored fabric to always wash the finished piece. The owner of the Needle Point Joint shop recommended that I use dawn dish soap to wash the piece, and i have never had bleeding, but then i don't use fancy floss. When you wash a piece, it fullers the thread so the close the weave. I used to weave and you always wash the cloth before you finish the piece because a loom pulls the threads so tight that to finish you wash to relax the fiber so you will have the way it will shrink when done. Good quilters usually wash the fabric before starting the quilt to get the sizing out so you also learn if it will blead.

I have threads from the 80s still in great shape and match up to today's colors, I do not leave them in lighted rooms, they are in a cabinet.

I have had great success soaking in Oxyclean for the 6 hour recommendation. I have some very old cross stitch done by my grandmother or my aunt. The were yellowed, had rust stains on them, etc. They came clean!!! I don't know what the stuff is composed of but it sure did work for me. My daughter has used it too and is also impressed with it. So glad you were able to rescue your piece.

The last epic Santa that you couldn't remember the name...Santa's Wish List. I have a Better Homes & Gardens kit on 27 count evenweave for it. I recently picked cross stitch back up after a decades long hiatus and this is my epic Santa that I really need to finish. I'm about 3/4 of the way, maybe a little more. At any rate it was what immediately came to mind when you started talking about your next Santa, and then there it was! I'm going back and forth on whether I want to jump in to finish that next, or finish the center panel of the Marbek Nativity. The two small panels of that are done, and a good chunk of the center panel, but no starts at all on the two midsized panels. Sigh...that will take ages. But I digress. Your Santa is beautiful! And get some RetroClean! I've used it on some old tobacco stained pieces and it really does work wonders.

Retro clean I use it all the time on my quilts. Even had an Antique quilt used it on. Stains gone. Glad your Santa is okay. Glad to know another way to clean.

Re: Flying. I’m not crazy about it myself and turn into a white knuckle flier (even curl up into a ball of whimpering jelly) when there is bad or extended turbulence. But when my son and his family were stationed overseas for 3 years, I had to go or not see my grandblessings while they were still young. Soooo … I mustered the courage and did it. I was anxious at first, but learned that international flights are so much more comfortable than domestic. I even dozed a bit and before I knew it, we were landing. The moral of this story is … if you want to see the statue in person … go for it. (PS-I explained my situational anxiety to my doctor and she did give me some meds to have on hand. However, I didn’t take them and not only did I do just fine, I actually enjoyed the flight.)

I was so thrilled to see your finished Santa of the Forest he’s beautiful. We have the same taste in Santas! I have been holding onto a copy of Treasures in Needlework from 1992 with Santa’s List. I always thought hmmm some day I’ll do that! Maybe seeing yours will inspire me. I regretted not buying the Mirabilia Santa’s Magic and now it’s OOP but I should buy the other Winter White Santa while it’s still available. Santa of the Forest is beautiful. I had a similar story. I stitched Forget Me Not by Hello from Liz Mathew’s. After I’d finished, Diet Coke was spilled in my carrier with my stitching which was not in a project bag. I didn’t know it for several days. It was dry when I found it. Stitched on white Aida with DMC. I stitched this for a sweet aunt in memory of her sister. I HAD to wash it. Never washed cross stitch before. No way does it compare to your Epic Santa, but it was dear to me. Seems like I tried most everything you did. It all came out! Such a relief! Gave it to my aunt with the story to tell.
One more thing, your next Epic Santa project choice is my favorite. Love that Santa. My second choice was The Spirit of Christmas.

I absolutely loved your discussion today. I began to stitch in late 1976 and took some classes from Erica Wilson…she recommended washing the needlework because even our hands have oil that transfer to the threads and fabric. When I came back to stitching after decades of not picking up anything 😳wow, 2020 was a learning curve and wow, what is available now is so beautiful. All this to say Dawn, soak, white vinegar, rinse still is my washing method. I always keep nubbins to test if the thread will run first ( wet and lay on paper towel. Love you so much!

Is there any thing more wonderful then being a step in mom while your daughter is away,, blessings to you.
I wash every one of my pieces after sewing. I do it in cold water with vinegar. I have never had any problems with dyed fabric or hand dyed floss. I don’t like framing anything without all the oils from handling during stitching removed . So that it will not yellow over time. I’m so happy for you and your big finish and being Grandma for the first time . Bless you!

Hi Vonna! Santa of the Forest is a masterpiece and so gorgeous. He needs to be up on the wall all year long. You use the exact same things that I have always used to wash all my cross stitch projects. Mine are always such a long-term project because I have so many WIPs. The only other thing I do is if I know I have hand-dyed fibers, I add a Color Catcher. If something is really dirty, I soak mine for 3-4 hours with the Color Catcher, Dawn, and Oxi-Clean in tap cold water. I then rinse well, gently squeeze the water out, lay it between towels, squeeze it again, and iron while still damp on the reverse side of the stitching. You are correct about the steam causing the hand-dyed threads to run and have had the issue but was lucky enough to not have the project ruined by it. I love the mats and frame that you chose, looking forward to the fully framed reveal. Congrats on the new addition coming soon to the family. I love being a grandma enough that I moved from Michigan to Texas to be an active grandma and not a video grandma. I have Walter (named after my deceased at a young age dad) about 56 hours a week and love that I am getting to have a hand in his upbringing. He is such a caring and compassionate little 3-year-old. You will end up changing your schedule once your little one is here to be the most involved you can be. Great job by your hubby for your Christmas gifts. I was going to say that you need to stitch Santa's List since you have 3 copies of the pattern, which to me means that it is very important to you, before you even said it.
