Even if I've done this a hundred times it's always good to mentally go through it especially on a particular model of vehicle. That way there's no surprises when I break out the tools and try to get the job done.
Thanks for this video! I bought a 2010 Focus a few weeks back and have started getting a misfire. My guy has told me there's nothing sexier than a woman covered in grease doing her own car maintenance, lol... so your video is my first tutorial. Very easy to follow and I love the music at the start... it makes me want to GET OUT THERE and GET 'ER DONE! :)
Good video thanks, i don't have a compressor so i bought a can of compressed air for computers to get rid of the debris. Still had the error code P0302. Which indicated a misfire. Turned out to be one of the coil packs which I replaced easily. Also I worried I did not gap the new plugs but it ran fine.
@mejhon6592 i would personally just replace the coils and make sure to use either OEM, Bosch or Hitachi. They tend to go bad once you remove them and you won't even know it half the time outside of poor performance and really bad MPG. My mechanic changed my harmonic balancer not too long ago and put the same coils back in. Car didnt run right and only got 11mpg. With a better scan tool i was able to see the small misfires and fixed with Bosch coils. Now I'm back up to 25mpg or so(transit connect van). So yah, just with the amount of hot and cool cycles, the coils don't do well once theyre removed. It's another story if you're changing your plugs every 30k or so. But at 100k, save yourself the frustration.
That you for such a quick respond, I forgot to mention that before it seem like it had a very small misfire but after I gap them to 51 it got a lot worse
i understand blowing off the top where all the dirt is but i dont agree with using the air to blow inside of the coil/plug when the plug is out. Id rather use a vac bag to suck all the crap out of it instead of it falling inside the cylinder.
+richardsimons2 pressure is higher in the cylinder than outside of the hole how is the debris going to get inside? So much debri comes out of the cylinder and threads you will never get it that clean with a vac
Perhaps remind people to hold extension perfectly vertical, then turn backwards until they feel the threads 'click' and know that the threads have met properly, then turn clockwise to tighten, by hand.
Oh yah, happens all the time on these engines but thankfully its a pretty easy fix. However do NOT use anything but an OEM gasket for this particular engine. All the other options tend to fail rather quickly if not immediately after. I highly recommend rockauto if you want OEM or similar parts for fairly cheap.
Thanks for the vid. Used it as reference to take a look at the CHT sensor position. Put my car in for a service and the idiot who did the spark plugs must have knocked the plug. Had my radiator fan running straight away from a cold engine start!
just changed the valve covers gasket thanks to your tutorial. However I'm still getting oil on the spark plug electrode part and not the top part? Any ideas what could be wrong? (same car)
@FordTechMakuloco may I know sir what's possible cause of my ford focus it's turned into speed limit mode and started to jerk while I'm driving !?.. thanks
I have modified my 2007 2 Ltr Duratec engine with re-enforcing the bottom end, fitting Raceline cams and throttle bodies increasing the output to around 205bhp. My question is do you recommend that I use the standard plugs as identified in the video or something else. The original plugs are still in the car and when i checked them yesterday there is not much left of the centre electrode and the gap was 130 thou so thought it was time for a change and that there maybe is an alternative plug. The engine is fitted to a Lotus 7 replica.
I don't recommend removing the electrical connectors unless you absolutely have to. I did this on the first one and when I went back to clip it on it wasn't clicking in. So I lifted on the tab and it broke off. Probably because it's made of plastic and the engine heat has made it brittle.
I change my Motorcraft 104 copper core spark plugs (gapped @ .055) annually, including the COPs. Four plugs and new COPs costs me under $40 from eBay or Amazon
Well done video. I would have skipped blowing air into the cylinder after the plug was out. Seems like if there was debris it could blow it into the combustion chamber.
+Matt Rankin no the air wand is inserted into the cylinder then turned on introducing positive pressure with the easiest exit being the spark plug hole going out of the hole not in.
To prevent cross threading I have always gone backwards slowly and with little pressure when I hear the click that's the two in threads dropping into place and I go forward slowly you should feel the threads bite as soon as you go forward. I have done this many times to prevent cross threading especially with something as delicate as aluminum threads.
Thanks for the video; have some questions: 1. What is the socket size for the plugs ? 5/8 or 13/16 ? 2. After the plugs are extracted, you sent compressed air to clean the threads; wouldn't it cause any tiny debris to fall back to the engine and damage the engine ? 3. Those grease for threads and boots are really necessary ? Are all mechanics using them when plugs are changed ? 4. If I do the change myself; can I skip those application of grease ?
1) 5/8"2)No the cylinder and threads are cleaned at the same time with the compressed air creating a high pressure area nothing is falling into the cylinder.3)Anti Seize can be skipped the new plugs are plated but will still gall coming out next time.4)Dielectric grease is a must.
This is probably the best video on how to change spark plugs on a Focus, period! When i changed mine today on a 2011 Focus, i noticed plugs 2 and 3 were a little bit rusty on the hex part where you torque them. Also, i could see some liquid inside these 2 cylinders with a flashlight. It was on top of these 2 pistons that i could see the liquid and on the threads of the spark plug. The other two cylinders and spark plugs (1and4) were fine, normal wear. The liquid looked like a mix of windshield washer fluid and coolant mostly. I am considering a head gasket failure or a cracked head... Otherwise this car starts and drives fine. If the valve cover was faulty, could it create this kind of mess? I am puzzled with this one. Thank you!
2.0 Duratec’s consume coolant regularly. Still in 2023 hasn’t been updated with the 2.0 Ecoboost. Just keep the reservoir topped off with good coolant.
A friend has a 2010 Transit connect with this same engine as this focus,,Today he tried to replace the plugs the first one broke in the head ,,,Lots of rust in the hole,,,can an ease out get the shell out of the hole or will the head need to be pulled and sent to a machine shop?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions,,,Best Regards
Yet another Awesome video !!! I especially like the way you give extra attention to cleaning out the wells with compressed air. Question !!! One of my cop retaining bolt spins and won't come out, any suggestions !!!
Is this the same procedure and part numbers for a '02 Focus with the DOHC Zetek engine? The valley on ours doesn't look as deep as the one you're working on in the video.
Hi, nice video. Question....mi focus uses saprk plugs with platinium tips but the last "mechanic" i took it to replaced them with regular ones, do you think this could damage or afect the engine in some way, should i replace them again with the original ones? Thanks!!
Great video. My 2006 focus is running very rough. Will changing plugs clear any of that up? Is there something else that could be the problem? Also, why didn't you change the coils as well? When do they need to be replaced?
On my 09 focus. I started it up and it blew the boot seal off the CHT SENSOR and is very loud now. Did a plug blow out cold like that or valve cover gasket? Or blown motor. Oil on dipstick looks good ,antifreeze is a little low but looks clean. What do you think? Thanks for any help
hey so im looking to get rid of my DRL lights on my 2009 ford focus but i am not aware where my fuse or relay is located, any suggestions? i live in California and dont need them
vK ProdigY uuuggghhhh were both on the same page, I own a 09 focus and also and I don't want the DRL ( for reasons of my own) I don't need another person preaching to me about the importance of DRL. But im looking for answers online and apparently there is this pcm that only the ford dealership can turn on or off through there IDS tool. Reason why our focus have DRL and other focus 08-11 don't have them is because some were built in Canada and there is a law that cars built in Canada must have DRL. The rest were built in Mexico. This is awesome! I nearly freaked when i saw there was oil around my sparkplugs on top of my engine! but i'll just change em. Hay i'm having another issue: -bout a year ago: my 2008 ford focus overheated, had no coolant, the heater stopped working until i replaced a bunch of hoses, one of the hoses that lead to the radiator literally fell off when i touched it. -present day: heater blows hot as hell!! and i can see a leak dripping onto the pavement, now creating a small puddle. It's coolant. My coolant runs out every two or three days after being filled completely. My car does not run hot. It has 120k on it. I can't find a leaky hose anywhere, but can see some of my hoses are wet. Can smell antifreeze upon opening my hood. Sometimes it seems to have trouble switching gears. The mph will go up, while the rpm stays at zero, and then bumps back up where it should be. While this goes on, it has a momentary stall, drives shaky, and the check engine light comes on. thoughts?
Yes get the check engine light codes read at auto zone, and get the cooling system pressure tested, or clean off engine compartment with a hose let dry and run engine at idle to hot and pressurized and look for the leaks very close.
FordTechMakuloco Thank you! Someone suggested the pressure testing, and now i have a second opinion(: only thing is the check engine light goes off after my car has it's little episode... will it still read it? (they probably arent very expensive, those valve cover gasket things...?)
Just got some Bosch platinums for an '07 2.0 (8108), and in tiny print it says don't gap or use antiseize. They don't seem to have a coating either. FWIW
antiseize from any other company is the same thing, just branded differently. Permatex works as well. You don't HAVE to use Ford/Motorcraft service products for everything.
+FordTechMakuloco As much as I would like to do this myself. I don't have all the tools you have. I don't have a long ext. You said you have a 2 footer. How much does it typically cost to have a mechanic do this job if you buy the 4 spark plugs for it? thank you!
You could do the job for under 40 dollars and 15 minutes of your time, that's if you use non oem plugs. You can get a pack of plugs for 16 dollars or you can get the oem for around 30 dollars. Amazon sells an extender with the correct size 5/8 spark plug socket for 16 dollars, plus don't forget your gap tool for $1.50 or less.
thanks for the helpful vid. first time trying it anything to watchout for? when you measure the plug gap it's ok to have the gapping tool touch the center electrode?
+Okaythen001 Yes you can have it touching the electrode. Only thing to watch out for is be very clean about it and once you pull the coils first thing check the plug wells for oil if dry continue if wet replace the valve cover gasket.
Great video! Looking forward to more Focus related ones Recently changed the plugs for my 2010 with 75K, I did notice one plug feels a bit "sticky" while threading in, will that cause problem later on? I used the "old school" method to start the thread, a piece of 3/8 hose grab the boot end of spark plug, and threaded in by hand. I did torqued them to spec. Didn't use anti-seize though
As long as it threads in and tightens down you should be ok. I noticed the anti seize from the factory still on the threads in the head can make them a bit hard to turn by hand.
FordTechMakuloco Thanks for the reply! I just went back to check the workshop manual, Ford did call for dielectric grease on the end of boots, but did not mention putting anti-seize on thread. I know anti-seize will make my life much easier the next time when changing the spark plugs, but always wondering how effective will it be. Any insights from your experience?
Anti seize on the threads of spark plugs going into and cylinder head is a good idea but especially on aluminum heads because of galvanic corrosion. The new spark plugs are supposedly coated with a nickel alloy composition which makes anti seize not totally necessary but who is to say which ones are or aren't? So I just put a light coat on as a force of habit and then I will never have a problem.
Factory gaping is .053 on stock you can gap up to .060 w/ stock coils. I run .058 on my own ford focus. I decided on that gap after doing some research on forums.
thanks for this video. it helped. however i have a quick question. my car is a 07 ford focus and it vibrates alot when it runs n when i press the gas pedal and accelarate it vibrares even more. can u tell me what is wrong. also it just comes and goes.
+Diego Meneses check the engine mounts first. lot of reasons it could be vibrating, if this is happening during acceleration mgiht be a fuel issue or could be a tire that wasnt tightened correctly. or an axle. could be a million things does the vibration stop when at a stop light or parked?
As long as they are the correct ones and torqued down correct you shouldn't have any issues pretty cut and dry. Is it very evidenty there is a tick now and it was quiet before? Also how does it run now.
hey my mechanic says none of his spark plug tools are fitting the stock spark plugs in there.... he says its something between 13 and 14 inch and from what he describes its like a triangle at the bottom.....says only ford would have this tool. Any opinions please? he also mentioned that this happened with another lady who had a toyota matrix i called ford and they are saying they do not have such special tools at all? im left out in the open! thanks (my car is Ford focus 2009 se auto)
Where is head temperature sensor? Ford Focus 2010 2nd generation North American SE. The problem arose when I had a leak in the heat radiator, I put some special matter into the coolant liquid, the leak disappeared. I wonder could this stuff make an effect on the sensor? Will it help if I purge the system?
Hi I have a 2007 focus 131k. I'm getting around 18mpg so I decided to check the spark plugs. It has autolite db platinum with gaps of .40. So I gap them to .51, now the car seem to be misfiring. No check engine light Any tips? Also if I replace them to motorcraft would I get better mpgs
Absolute first thing to do is replace them with motorcraft and set at .051", rest KAM and relearn and recheck. How To Clear your PCM'S Memory on Fords After Repairs

Buy new coils and replace them whilst you replace your spark plugs
@@windows7620 so when you change the spark plugs yoe always need to put new coils too? Or we can clean the coils when we put them back?

thanks for the helpful vid. first time trying it anything to watchout for? when you measure the plug gap it's ok to have the gapping tool touch the center electrode?
+Okaythen001 Yes you can have it touching the electrode. Only thing to watch out for is be very clean about it and once you pull the coils first thing check the plug wells for oil if dry continue if wet replace the valve cover gasket.
Hi there, what it should be the gap for a Ford Focus SE 2013, I got Denso Iridium tt plugs and they came pregap at .040 Thanks
Specificied everything except for the spark plug socket size .. other than that good video
5/8" like usual nothing special.
Great thank you very much
The spark plugs of an American focus 2009 have to be calibrated
How is that? Until what measure
Awesome video. Will apply to our 2008 Fusion 2.3l. What should the gap be for this car? Will foot pounds be the same on install of plugs?
Frank Frost It is very similar. Yours is .049"- .053" spark plug gap and plug torque is 106 in lbs
Great video! Looking forward to more Focus related ones
Recently changed the plugs for my 2010 with 75K, I did notice one plug feels a bit "sticky" while threading in, will that cause problem later on?
FordTechMakuloco It's always good to know. Another awesome lesson learnt. thank you.
Will this video work for a 2010 Ford Focus SE? If so what are the gap specifications?
Yes same engine and spec for 2010 is 1.25-1.35 mm (0.049-0.053 in)
Quality vid.
excellent vids.
what's the list of tools you use ?????
thanks for the video
What’s wrong if you pull the plug out and you do see oil??
Is the 2008-2011 focus generally a reliable car?
Great video. What size of socket for the spark plugs I must have missed that?
They use the regular size of 5/8"
thank you so much. but what does it mean if there is any coolant or oil on the coil?? mine had some
you needed a new valve cover gasket
Brian can you tell me the spark plug torque spec for the 03 focus 2.3L ?
108in lbs
till me more about the coil pack and how do you know when to change one
Good video what is the spark plug calibration
Factory gaping is .053 on stock you can gap up to .060 w/ stock coils. I run .058 on my own ford focus. I decided on that gap after doing some research on forums.
Will this method work with a 2003 Ford Focus se model? I would probably just need the right set of spark plugs ..?
TheKynderoo Yes very similar.
thanks for this video. it helped. however i have a quick question. my car is a 07 ford focus and it vibrates alot when it runs n when i press the gas pedal and accelarate it vibrares even more. can u tell me what is wrong. also it just comes and goes.
+Diego Meneses check the engine mounts first. lot of reasons it could be vibrating, if this is happening during acceleration mgiht be a fuel issue or could be a tire that wasnt tightened correctly. or an axle. could be a million things does the vibration stop when at a stop light or parked?
Thanks man.
That that connection next to the spsrk plug
Hi, I replace the spark plugs today for the oems and now there is a small tick. Did I do something wrong?
As long as they are the correct ones and torqued down correct you shouldn't have any issues pretty cut and dry. Is it very evidenty there is a tick now and it was quiet before? Also how does it run now.
is that the same 2.0 that's in the Mazda 3
same
is the 2.3l any different than this procedure?
that is the 2.3l engine
Mazda Protege 2006 aria starts making sparks
I can't afford the tuneup needed for my 2011 Ford Focus so this video is gonna have to walk me thru. Is everything with exception of plugs the same ?
tjamison36 Yup they carried that engine through with no changes very simple repair.
FordTechMakuloco I did everything you did but my car hasn’t had spark plug changes in 8 years.the car won start after putting new spark plugs
I always change my spark plugs when the engine is cold🙋♂️
what plugs are used for a 2005 ford focus zx4 ?
hey my mechanic says none of his spark plug tools are fitting the stock spark plugs in there.... he says its something between 13 and 14 inch and from what he describes its like a triangle at the bottom.....says only ford would have this tool. Any opinions please? he also mentioned that this happened with another lady who had a toyota matrix
i called ford and they are saying they do not have such special tools at all?
im left out in the open!
thanks
(my car is Ford focus 2009 se auto)
TUMBABS No special tools at all for these a regular 5/8" spark plug you must have some funky aftermarket plugs in there.
Thank you understood and already reversed the
Hi I have a 2007 focus 131k.
I'm getting around 18mpg so I decided to check the spark plugs.
It has autolite db platinum with gaps of .40. So I gap them to .51, now the car seem to be misfiring. No check engine light
Any tips? Also if I replace them to motorcraft would I get better mpgs
Absolute first thing to do is replace them with motorcraft and set at .051", rest KAM and relearn and recheck. How To Clear your PCM'S Memory on Fords After Repairs
Thanks
What is the part number on this ignition Coil?
Do you not need to change the coil boots along with spark plugs? If not, when should you change them?
No need
@@FordTechMakuloco Thanks for replying. Just found out two of my four ignition coils are 3/4's filled with oil. Trying to make sure I order all the things needed before fixing the problem.
Do I need to purchase spark plug wires and is there a video to install those also ?
tjamison36 There is no wires on this engine. If you have the older zetec engines the Ford wire sets come pre installed together so they just push in.
What size is the bolt remover on the exterior
