Cover of David Gilmour's guitar parts for the Pete Townshend song Give Blood, from his 1985 Album White City. I learned this when I was a teenager back in the late 1980s, but recently I decided to revisit it and get it as accurate as possible - or reasonably close. It's simple to play, but because it is intertwined with the delay repeats, some guitarists find it difficult to determine what David is actually playing. Simon Phillips did a good lesson of his drum parts here:
• The Iconic Drumming Be...
Below is TAB for the repeating intro pattern that David goes back to several times in the song. He quickly presses and releases each fret, stacatto-like. He also slightly palm mutes the strings.

Below is the muted picking pattern David plays through the verse sections. He lightly picks and heavily palm mutes this. I found it easier to play by just touching the strings with my fret hand, but not actually pressing the frets, other than that last note.

Gilmour is #1 in my books.
Nice! Excellent playing and instruction. Such a great song. Simon Phillips’ playing is sublime as is Gilmour’s guitar work.
Super interesting, thanks for this! I've always been wondering what the guitar part looks like. Now I have an idea. Cool!
Really great job, Kit, thank you so much! I like your voicings too- very melodic...
Brilliant.
BRAVO
Ok Dude, that’s awesome!! Subscribed!
Bravo
Wow! So glad I found you! Your website is 10/10. Thank you for your wealth of knowledge and passion!
Glad you enjoy it!
Think you nailed it! Sounds 👍
amazing. Why dont you do Impulse response of your fane cresendo wem cab, for the posternity ? i can help
That's not a real WEM cab behind me in the video. It's a Hi-Tone Eclipse cab, loaded with Hi-Tone Crescendo A speakers and Celestion G12T75 speakers.
dont you have a real crescendo A speaker that your compare your Hi-tone to it ?
Hey Kit, you started using the E906 again? 😊
I don't think I ever stopped using them. I usually blend an SM57 and e906.
@@kitraestudio Ah I though you once stated that on the Gilmour forum. Anyway, great combination! I usually pair my E906 with a condenser. Have you tried that before?
@@gertjeeeh I stopped using the e906 alone, but I think I did switch to the MD-421 + SM57 for my Hi-Tone cab for a few years. I use all three on that cab now.
I have tried just about every type of mic combo at some point, but I never really found a condenser mic I liked. Dynamics are just so easy to use that I have stayed with them.
@@kitraestudio interesting. I might grab myself a SM57 too then. Curious as to what results that will yield for me. Thanks! And of course great job on this video man. Your content (YT, website, forums) has been so helpful for many years. Really appreciate all the effort you put in to that! Honestly, very valuable.
What distortion and what settings are you using?
Boss SD-1. Settings are shown at 7:50 in the video
Those fat fingers of Gilmour.
Fantastic insight- I’ve been stumped on this one for years. David is such tasty player and your no slouch either. Fine work sir! Thx
Glad to help!
Nails it.
Great playing! Great video! Thank you so much!
And probably at the time this was all improved!
I think Gilmour had already written this song prior to giving it to Townshend's during his White City sessions. It was one of the unfinished songs Gilmour wrote it for his 1984 solo album. Townshend just put lyrics to it.
Nice job. I tried for years, never got it right in delay settings.
Великолепно! Просто супер!
Hey thanks. Love this song.

Amazing sound and lesson! Keep ‘‘em coming! What guitar is that by the way? 😀
Fender 57 AVRI Strat with EMG-SA pickups. Similar to the guitar David was using for this song at the time.
