This show was filmed for the famous German TV series Rockpalast at MIDEM in Cannes on 29th January 1986. Pete Townshend’s Deep End were touring in support of Townshend’s solo concept album “White City: A Novel”. Several of the musicians that appeared on the album were featured in the line-up of the Deep End including Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour on lead guitar. The set list has tracks from the “White City” album, other Pete Townshend solo tracks, Who classics, David Gilmour’s song “Blue Light” and a couple of surprises. Pete Townshend and the band deliver an outstanding performance that showcases him as a solo artist as distinct from his work with The Who.

We all know Pete, David and Simon are geniuses but let's hear it for all the other players and singers. They're all killing it, the amount of talent accumulated on that one stage is insane.
Well said...
Yes.
Very well said. Cheers
no one said otherwise...?

All I did was praise the other musicians. I never said people criticised them. But most comments tend to focus on David, Pete and Simon.
Killer drumming, Gilmour on guitar, cool-ass horns, great backing vocals and percussion - how much better could a live show be???
@@BobLeton No..drummer Bill Barry of R.E.M. Robert at 67.
Holy sheet who ever is who what a line up for Pete
I love this song it reminds me of how much people really want from you.
@@bobmalack481 Simon Phillips
you left out pino.
One of the best cassette tapes I ever bought. Yes, I'm that old.
Yes got mine from Tower Records in London. Then sought it out on CD many years later.
Pete's best era of songwriting. He's in his prime here with an amazing all star band
Simon Phillips is drumming perfection.
This performance is a master class.
On this, yes. I didn’t care for him in The Who context though.
YES! As long as he stay away from Toto material. Saw him with Oldfield in '84. He was AMAZING!!
Yes yes yes
@@glengamble526 I know....I heard he was sorry he let you down there. Took him ages to get over it
The dream team! backing vocals, tousend, gilmour, simon, percussionists, metals...ufff....
Townshend's clearly one of THE greats of his time.
At the end even Gilmore turns around and he's like Simon you are a beast; I am in utter awe!
Townsend saved some of his best late songs for himself which is why we got Face dances & it's hard.
This literally almost sounds like it's studio recorded. How wonderful.
Literally almost
One of the BEST drummers !
If he keeps playing like that hes gonna do the keith moon hehe
yeah man
@@MrJeffschuler Speaking of which, he's really the only drummer who toured with The Who came close to Keith's power and ferocity! What a master!
THE best in my opinion!!!!
@@Marcus_C51 No love for Zak Starkey? Although I do agree that Simon is brilliant and one of the all time greats in general.
I was 14 when I once entered my favourite record store on a Saturday afternoon in 1985 and this song just was playing..... I was immediately captured by the great guitar playing and the powerful, immersing drumming, not yet knowing that two of my favourite musicians were playing there, Dave Gilmour and Simon Phillips, but I bought the record instantly!
Bough tthis on cassete at age 15 from a record store as well. My cousin had told me that this song was fantastic and BOY, was he right.
So fantastic Gilmour is back on road/stage soon enough.❤
Simon Phillips in BEAST MODE and putting on an absolute drumming clinic.
Simon is a beast!!! Love this version, and everything Pete does (of course).
Pete is very underrated as a solo artist.
The Paranoid Blues Man aye truth - most of his solo stuff is really amaze and unique 😍
For Sure He Certainly is!! What a song and what support he had!! Just Brilliant👍👍👍
He is amazing!
Certainly one of the Top best , most important Composers of our era . Glad U chose Life over Death, Mr Townshend . It was a close Call , real Fans and Supporters know that . Bless U All , ,
✌️ n 💕
He obviously wasn’t underrated at the time this concert was recorded. After all, David Gilmour was in Pete Townshend’s band and producers/promoters were willing to finance the recording of these shows, and many thousands of his fans were paying to see these shows…
A great drummer killing it on one of the hardest drum parts you will ever play. This song brings me to tears every time.
The best Pete Townshend solo song. Absolutely as good as anything The Who did, but obviously in a different setting.
Pretty much every song off of White City was killer. I remember running out and buying it in the winter of '85 (maybe '86???), going back to my apartment and listening to the album over and over again. I agree, Steve. Every bit as good as the best of The Who's stuff, maybe other than Quadrophenia, which is as close to perfection as anything gets in my unimportant opinion.
SiPhi is absolutely mesmerizing!
The tension just kept building, with no release until the final cymbal from Phillips. Absolutely extraordinary!! Thank you.
No! Drummer is Bill Berry of R.E.M.
@@bobmalack481 Bill Berry would admit of Simon Phillip's abilities and vast influence...what's your point?
@@tfr2602 Whudya mean "what's my point?" The drummer looks like Bill Berry whether it's him or not. E-gawds man, is that so hard to understand?!
Simon Phillips... and absolute drumming GOD!!!!
Good God...Simon Phillips, ladies and gentlemen....Mr. Simon Phillips!
Awesome song by Pete, amazing Gilmour guitar plus incredible drumming by Simon Phillips = musical bliss! LOVE THIS
Simon steals the show
Long live Pete Townshend
Can I comment yet again how much I love this song?
Still remember when this came out, one of a small handful of albums I bought at the record store the day it was released. Definitely buying the new box set.
Which?
Which what?
What boxed set are you talking about? A new Pete one?
Well now that you ask I'm not sure, I thought there was a new release of White City but not seeing it now...
Pete, David Gilmore, David Sanborn, Simon Phillips, nice!
No David Sanborn here...
Every thing on that stage came straight out of Pete's mind Amazing
Watching all the videos from this show. I'm just blown away...
Love a big band sound. Give it to me Pete!
This album is perfection, probably as consistent as any Who album. Simon Philips is an absolute beast.
David Gilmour, Simon Phillips and Pete on one stage --- hillarious
Fantastic group of musicians
*Simon Philips has entered 16th-note kick groove*
Group energy +1000
Simon Phillips dynamic drumming drives this track to another place
Superb musicianship.
Best concert I never saw. I like Pete's music from this time more than anything after Who By Numbers.
WOW!!!! Spot on. Everyone was just in the pocket.🤘🤘🤘
I used to have the audio on cassette tape, recorded off the radio when it was broadcast throughout Europe and simultaneously on the TV :-)
Never gets old. The best.
Watched this live when first broadcast and it floored me.
Just came across this: I. Had. No. Idea. This is wild, moving and great energy! WOW!
💕 Love the 80’s Pete.
...And keep blood between brothers... So deep..,
What an Intro! One of the best in Rock History! Pure Energy!
Drum God Simon Phillips on a first edition TAMA Artstar Cordia double-bass monster setup!!! Oh Yeah!!!
I tried to buy that kit from his London studio when he went to LA to join Toto...
Back then, they cost $2,600 for a Simon set up at Sam Ash.
He did a drum clinic at a German music store that same year, and they were selling the Artstar afterwards that he'd used for it; I had a bit of a play on it and noticed he'd sawn off this hi-hat rod, too! :-))
Unbelievable! One of the BEST of all time!
Recuerdo cuando salió a la venta este disco "White City" me voló la cabeza! Y hasta el de hoy suena super fresco y actual. GROSOOOO Pete!
Simon is a "Fucking Monster" on this song! Like a freight train going downhill!
The moment at 5:38 when Gilmore is looking back at Si-Phi....
Agree. Simon is just destroying his kit. Drumming perfection.
@Cole Locke
:
Oh yeah. And not as obvious, but PT did the same thing at 05:27.
When Simon cuts loose . . . yikes!
There are moments like that in the live Toto dvds. Steve Lukather Leland Sklar, Nate West looking in awe at Si-Phi. 2013 I Can't Stop loving You, live...
Of course, Gilmour has played with Nick Mason for years...
@@sergioiacino4825 - I was thinking the same thing! :-))
Happy Birthday Pete!!!
Wow. WOW.
I remember that band. It was huge. What was it 16 - 17 peice band? That had to cost big bucks to take that on the road back then.
WOW !
Pete is a great musician, songwriter and performer..
a truly talented creative artist and his other solo
shows of what was called, psycho derilict is a great
performance of an album with very good songs thru
the entire show
Hell yeah! This song is the best!
Deep End was the super-est of supergroups, with the possible exception of Paul McCartney's Rockestra. (But at least Deep End got to play more than two songs.)
2023 ..Yep , Love It ..
This is great. Thanks so much!
This video doesn’t cut to Simon’s incredible drumming like the original. Go find it. Best drum parts in all of rock music history.
Fabulous everything!
Now I understand why that fast echo on the guitar sound so much like the song Run off of Pink Floyd The Wall The Genius of David Gilmour on his fender Stratocaster
Its a delay....
Simon with the elite drum performance.
Gilmour!
This is one of the greatest things ever recorded. Holy fuck.
Awesome... some guitar...love it!
About three and half minutes in, a lacklustre (pffft, still brilliant) Simon Phillips suddenly took of and took this song into the stratosphere!!!!
White City album is a truly phenomenal piece of work. Typical video direction spending minimal to no time focusing on the drums and bass, which is where the most interesting musical part of this song is happening.
That's amazing
That's not just a TOETAPPER, IT'S A FOOTSTOMPER🦶
Great Song my Favorite from the Album and David's Masterful Playing.... Also love the Sunburst Charvel Guitar he's using on this which he recently Auctioned.... One Volume One Humbucker, Distortion, Delay and David ::)
Just brilliant.
Holy fuck this is so full on.
Talent!
the best thats all
Incroyable
🎩
Give blood, Brothers! 👍👍👍
Genial ❤❤
Very good
How cool 😎
This performans was on the top in my culture.
d@mn , the Whole band is on 🔥 Fire
Such a shame this band couldn't do more than the couple of shows they did. Though several of these artists wound up as part of the backing band on the Who's '89 reunion tour. Must have cost a fortune to put together.
Yes! Must have a cost a penny!
Loving this in 2021!! Happy Valentine's day!❤
That intro kicked my ass.
Chucho Merchan on bass playing Pino's line 👌🏼
Killing it
what are the time delays or repeat time for the 2 delays used. He uses them in triplets to offset each other
Music!
I have to admit my ignorance - who is this ridiculously great drummer, Simon Phillips? Why don't I know this guy?
Jodi linscot on percussion if I’m not mistaken
hello Mr. Floyd nice to meet you do you know who the other guy is I ask a stupid question sorry
holy f-cking drummer. Petes vocal was amazing!
Simmon Phillips took the beat and made it his bitch in this song.
Real music....genius musicians.....if you've ever seen them live, you'll have a spiritual experience
ONLY 29K VIEWSSSSSSSSSSS???????????????/
Fantastic performance, especially Gilmour - but his outfit and hair, good Lord! ;-)
😇GVB ❤🙏
.....thanks Pete.
I see som song in their brtish idolish !!!
And that wasn't their closing song ?
Let's talk about Simon Phillips being a bass players dream!
Some very fine guitar from Stephen Fry... (Behhhh!) ;-)
