Risks and benefits of ultrasound

Ultrasound for pregnancy has been used for over 30 years, but is it safe? Our Midwives explore the complicated topic and discuss the risks and benefits of doing an ultrasound and which one they think provides the most benefit. In our practice we do offer limited ultrasounds in the office for early dating, twins, or confirm your baby’s position late in pregnancy. Anatomy scans are always referred out to a local sonographer. But, we can also use traditional tools that limit exposure such as a fetoscope and using our hands for estimating size, growth and position. All of these tools are limited in some way, unfortunately there is no risk free, crystal clear picture that we can use to rule out every complication. So, it’s important to discuss these risks and benefits with your provider so you can make the most informed choice possible for your pregnancy.
