The fact that they managed to make the most boring half of the book SO GOOD makes me extremely excited for the next one because it's when it really gets interesting! (I have to disagree with Kelsey about Zendaya: I love that they didn't try to doll her up. She lives in a desert, she's dirty and her hair is messy and it would make no sense for her to be wearing makeup. She's still gorgeous, I think it's important to see that too)
The visions and use of Chani in them is great plus she's the one giving the beginning narrative of Arrakis and the baron. In the next half she is way more important and the right hand of Paul. And I hope we see more of her if Dennis does a director's edition, and I will gladly watch it if he does.
I don’t understand how people didn’t understand this movie, I’ve never read the books myself but it was so easy to follow??? They spell it out for you. They managed to set up a world without showing too much or too little. It was so good.
Agreed it was so easy to understand. I already give it 10/10 before reading the book. And after reading the book then watching it again it become even better
Yeah +1. The story itself is super simple; not a lot actually happens in the movie. They get assigned a planet, they get betrayed, boy and mom escape to the desert people and win their trust. It’s simpler plot wise than every Star Wars movie (maybe because it’s half a book). Where the movie does throw a ton at you is worldbuilding stuff in the background. People say a lot of made up words. But you can ignore all that and follow the story pretty easily. Reminded me of Mad Max Fury Road. Pretty simple story, but tons of background worldbuilding.
Dune was everything I had imagined when I read the book and I was in awe. My first statement was “That could have been a 2 hour movie without the slow-mo scenes but so worth it.” Also, the way they explain how Paul looks in the book is literally how Timothee looks. Almost girlish is how the describe him I think lol
I read the book as a kid and I need to reread it before the next movie. The pacing is so good and Dennis vision is great. And I still see nods to earlier art and definitely some Geiger that was part of Jodorosky's project.
Garrick is literally me! Trying to actually have an educated comprehensive conversation with proper pronunciation and facts on Dune but also attempting to be respectful of the spazzes while they have their yelling moments. Respect, Garrick. Respect. This movie (and book) is so good. Watch it. Read it. Do it.
I watched Dune on my tiny laptop and I was on the verge of tears when the credits rolled bc of the pain of not getting to experience it on the biggest screen possible the first time. Thank god cinemas will reopen this Nov in my country, i'm making it a mission to rewatch Dune in all its glory on imax.
For those wondering about the lack of computer technology in the Dune Universe: Essentially the plot of Terminator has already happened. AI enslaved humanity and we eventually rose up and destroyed them all. That's why we don't use it.
The Butlerian Jihad happened, a war against advanced technology. All “Thinking Machines” are banned. No computers, AI, robots, androids, cell phones, etc.
I’m a Dune book reader since the 1980s. I’m not the only one who will point out that while it has a hero’s journey arc on the surface, it pokes holes and questions that narrative as much as follows ir. This movie is already doing it if you pay attention. Paul is. being set up as Messiah-like figure by forces that have been at work for centuries. He’a also the product of a eugenics program. The Kwisatz Haderach is a terrifying possibility.
Y'all's enthusiasm in the first 10 minutes has convinced me to go see this movie, so I will be coming back to this episode the second I leave the theater on Saturday
I absolutely agree with Kelsey in how it felt surprisingly not overwhelming to be immersed in this unfamiliar universe so quickly! I went into watching it with little to no context and was initially worried that the lore would be inaccessible for a newbie, but it was handled really well and now I feel excited to watch the next ones and dive further into this world!
Love that Zach says Dune is dense with lore when anyone that’s read the books knows the movie is surface level. They did a great job introducing non-book-reading viewers without being overwhelming or cheesy with the inner monologues like in the books
As a Dune fan, this was painful to listen to! THANK GOD Garrick was there to tell Kelsey that Dune is not a hero's journey based on Harry Potter! lol PS love y'all
Chani (Zendaya’s character) doesn’t come into the storyline officially of the book until Book Two (the second part of the first book, which has three parts total). However, her character is extremely crucial to Paul’s overall journey. So yeah, Zendaya is not in as much as the general public would have liked, but it follows the original story, and she plays an important role going forward. Additionally, she did provide the entire monologue in the beginning.
I feel like I still didn’t get much from her character even after she was introduced. She was still a strong badass character, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t feel any real substance from her or her relationship with Paul. To me it was very Romeo-and-Juliet level love where there was an attachment without showing the relationship built behind it. It’s been a while since I read it though so I could be misremembering it, but that was the general feeling I had 🙂
@@very_tiny_birb They literally just met 10 min. before the movie ended. How can they fulfill your request to show a back story about them? The "relationship" is going to be built starting from NOW. Chani does not have a "real" part until later in the book. She was just in Paul's "visions" for most of the first part of the book. The same part that this movie covered.
@@donny1960 sorry, I did not clarify that I have read the book and am talking about her book character. We see Chani very briefly, have a few encounters with her and then fast forward when they have a child together. I know the book is not a romance, but there is so much foreshadowing with her in his dreams that it felt very rushed to have them immediately madly in love. Granted, he is 15, so it’s not too far-fetched
I listen to this podcast all the time and I am so glad they decided to take about about a Denis Villeneuve movie. He makes me feel really proud of being Quebecoise (french canadian). If you feel like seeing another side of this director (and don't mind subtitles or dub), I recommend "Incendies" (2010) a great adaptation of a really good theatre play by Wajdi Mwawad (Liban). Hope a lot of people goes to see dune i theaters so we get a part II!
Gosh, I saw "Incendies" at a festival when it came out and I still think about it from time to time. Sadly whenever I mentioned it to people nobody knows it. 😭
How the hell aren't you guys bigger?! The chemistry you three have is amazing. I had to turn off this episode to avoid spoilers cause y'all got me excited to see it! Also super happy to hear the shout out to Jodorowsky and his work.
The SyFy Channel miniseries in the 90's was actually pretty good. But of course the special effects were terrible. Children of Dune was pretty good as well; and it had a young, gorgeous James McAvoy running around shirtless throughout the whole series.
You should release a cut of only Garrick and Bowie. 🥰🥰🥰🥰 With music, no Kelsey annoyingly yelling all the time, and people would meditate on that! This is what we need. PS: Honestly, Kelsey, you don’t make a better point by getting loud and obnoxious.
I was so sad when the movie ended. And Hans Zimmer did an AMAZING job with the score (not surprising, but it was a huuuuge part of the experience on IMAX)!!!!
Now I want to drop everything I'm doing and spend the next five days looping Dune (alsoKelseypleasestopcomparingdunetoharrypotterfortheloveofshaihuludthisispainful)
Dunkin Idaho is the most important character in the whole series of dune he is thousands of years old by the sandworm book and is still known as the sex God to women
Didn't read the books but I think Zach is trippin, if you're intelligent and familiar with Sci-fi, it's not too much to grasp. A lot of things can be deferred with context clues and repetition throughout.
Minor nitpick but the only reason the leto and Jessica weren't married is because he wanted it to look like the other houses had a chance to marry their daughters off to him. So it was purely political. A choice which he feels bad about in the end I think.
43 minutes into this and all I have to say is this. I adore Dune. I've watched every movie and mini series and read every book. Garrick is the shit and on point with every comment. Thank. You. Garrick. Ps. Please read the books!!!
I love the new version of Dune and saw it on HBOmax and saw it in the theater yesterday and it was beautiful both times but it was so much more on the big screen.
I'm very familiar with the original Dune, as well as the novels - and adore them! - but have yet to see this one. I'm looking forward to it now, though!

So fun fact here: Denis Villeneuve is a French Canadian director. He is from the province of Quebec. Most people know him for his most recent movies, however there’s a very important movie that he directed, which is Polytechnique. He directed a movie which is about the infamous “Montreal Massacre”, where some guy came into a school (Polytechnique), and shot 14 women. This event happened in December 1989, it’s an event that shook the whole province @ the time. I think that it would be really interesting for Guilty Pleasures to cover this movie, as most people do not know about this very tragic event (if you’re outside of Canada and know of this event, I’m surprised).
Okay I have a auditory processing disorder from a head injury from when I was a child. This means that it takes longer for me to understand what I’m hearing. I’m only a few milliseconds behind the average person, and usually if I don’t disclose this information it’s not super noticeable but it makes things like watching a fast-paced or complicated movie tricky. The subtitles were an absolutely necessity for me, I would have been lost without them but that’s very typical for my situation. The movie itself took maybe some extra rewinding on my part than usual but I did understand most of what was happening in real time. Which was exciting for me as a movie-goer that I could keep up without being spoon fed. I did go back when I was about 20 mins in & re-watch the entire beginning to make sure I understood everything, just bc they move quite quickly through a bulk of information. This def isn’t a movie I would make anyone watch with me, all the rewinding would anger a regular person. I loved the experience. Along with Garrick I too watched it again the next day.
I hear the issue with the whispering... i do... but I think the purpose is to emphasize the feeling envoked by the soundtrack and THE VOICE... honestly... the aggression of that wouldn't have been so felt without the softness of the rest of the movie...
About to have my second viewing on HBO Max WITH SUBTITLES because I'm sure I missed half the plot thanks to all the whispering after being deafened by the DUN DUN of the Dune soundtrack. Worth it. Desert planet of Canada. Loooooooool.
I disagree when people say "Don't watch it at Home, watch it on the Big Screen" ...cause i got an HD projector for 900$CAN and i'm watching on a 148 inch screen, AT HOME, in the basement-cinema with perfect darkness blinds and it's juste marvelous. Also the best way to play video games. Thank you, thank you and thank you!
This is the first and only movie I have seen since last autumn and I agree if you will see one movie in this pandemic this is the one. Also I am pregnant and I sat through the whole thing. That means a lot.
IDK where I read this but I remember reading something that perfectly summaries what paul atreides journey is all about, It said something to the tune of paul atreides journey is the opposite of luke skywalker; luke was born a nobody who build himself to be the hero and a royalty of the jedi, he became the myth and the legend; paul being born into power did the opposite he was born the one, the myth, the legend and moves to the desert planet, instead of luke wishing to get the fuck away from tatooine lol. They both become leaders and leaders but through different paths
So, Denis meant that the first Dune book is split into two films. He has said that the third and last film of his trilogy will be based on the second book.
My husband has been looking forward to Dune coming out for what seems like years: I knew nothing about the plot before this weeks podcast. Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Tremors (sand snakes)? I AM SO ON BOARD
You guys should watch the Sci-Fi Channel Mini-series from 2000 and its sequel Children on Dune starring baby James McCavoy. They're so low budget that they're awesome. But the performances are solid, and everyone attached was very committed.
I'm going to be real, I hate movie theaters and I can get a far superior experience just holding my tablet close to my face and wearing big headphones.
Haven't seen dune yet (it comes out December where I live) but I love the books. Yes they are all humans descendant from Earth. Biggest missed opportunity is that they didn't have Alexander or Billy or any of the Skarsgard brothers play actual brothers in Dune, nephews to Vladimir Harkonnen. Would have been so trippy. Or get one of them to play Feyd-Rautha, the beautiful brother next to Dave Bautista's Glossu Rabban. It's not too late right? 🥲 Feyd is Paul's foil in the books, why cut him? Or maybe a musician? Jodorowski wanted Mick Jagger to play him and Lynch got Sting. Maybe Harry styles or Becky's fave Shawn Mendes 😂
@@carolynmchugh5679 Hahahaha, exactly! Got to start somewhere 💃 Tbh my mind says Troye Sivan, but my heart wants Jason Derulo. I have seen none of the movies they've been in, but I'm ready to be surprised. 😁

Ok, I’m glad someone else said this cause I was like 👀👀 at the beginning of the ep. 😂😂
Bowie like I have to have eyes on dad at all times but I dont wanna move when someone is loving on me.

I felt like it was Star Wars meets Game of Thrones. Never read the books or watched the old one, but totally enjoyed it!
Both of which wouldn’t have come about without Dune. Dune book came out in like 1965.
Lol heros journey
Zendaya’s character will be much more involved in the next movies
Here for My Bwoys praising Gem Tim & Pride of Gypsies ❤️❤️❤️
Thirsting moment was so fun! Haha! Justice for Dave Bautista!!!!

The Score: IM GAY COOKIE DOUGH

The "spice" of the planet is cocaine. It's a planet of cocaine and two groups of people can't share.
I don't remember anything from the movie because that spider thing with hands will forever give me nightmares.
Also just realized it’s called DUNE because it’s on a desert planet and to be honest I’m a little upset. Don’t know why just am lol
Dune is one of the names of the planet.
Why are you upset about that?
Shawn Mendes as feyd rautha?? No… he’s not even an actor
@@carolynmchugh5679 Hahahaha, exactly! Got to start somewhere 💃
Tbh my mind says Troye Sivan, but my heart wants Jason Derulo. I have seen none of the movies they've been in, but I'm ready to be surprised. 😁
Dune was sexy aesthetically.
Is my bar too low that when I found out that Jonathan reads I was like …. that’s hot
I’m 35 minutes in, and I just noticed the dog.
