lauradiy calling them out about not knowing the gouda line and how iconic it is was the morally correct thing to do.
We love her for this
"i think thats why the girls and the gays like this movie" YES. IT IS. this movie is a high camp experience.
As a trans adult now, this movie def had an impact on me and my gender journey, just seeing her play with gender awakened something in me. 10/10 this movie made me trans /j
SAME!! it was like this movie was a ~cis society approved~ way to safely explore my gender, especially at the time.
Looking back, being obsessed with this movie was an obvious projection of my identity and I just love my past self for that !!! Hahahah it was so obvious 🤣
THIS MOVIE MADE ME TRANS
This movie belongs to the trans mascs
this movie, Stick It, and Miss Congeniality = I'm trans
nooooo he did not play soccer, he got kicked out of other schools so that’s why he’s in boarding school. Viola tried out and made the team.
Yeah he was very clearly just pushed onto the field without understanding what was going on and he was clearly confused
The fact that Eunice and how beautifully cringy she is didn’t come up is mildly infuriating. She was unnecessary to the movie but absolutely one of my favorite parts
That actress is the best part of every movie she's in
I'm with Kelsey, Channing Tatum's face 100% has military vibes. We love him, we applaud him, but she speaks facts
+1
I think Zach’s seventh grade story of dressing up as a girl and people not realizing it was him, is definitely 1/4 of the Try Guys origin story.
one of my absolute favorite quarantine memories was waking up one morning and coming out to the living room to find my parents fully engrossed in this movie. at first I think they were watching it to make fun or because they thought it wasn’t as great as it is, but by the time I got out there they were halfway through and dying laughing at every joke. it was fun to be an expert on a movie my parents had never seen (for once) and anticipating all their reactions to my favorite moments. plus my dad usually never finds teen movies from my generation at all worthwhile but he genuinely loved this one. it was a great morning.
this is an adorable and wholesome story, thank you for sharing it because it made me smile.
That sounds adorable!
Awwww
As a college student I have met many many many men like the one in the film.
And I think they showed not all men are like that. They show Channing Tatum was not like them.
And the guy that liked Eunice wasn't like that, he was just too embarrassed and a follower at the begining
This and Bend it Like Beckman were essential as a soccer girlie in high school 😅 speaking of which, y’all should do an episode on Bend it Like Beckham.
YES to Bend It Like Beckham!
Yesssss
YASSSS! Do Bend It Like Beckham!
YESSSS
My bi little soccer heart is filly dedicated to these films
Yessssss
as a Trans guy who watched this movie a lot as a kid i can confirm that it was kinda like watching mulan, this was an interesting experience. i loved those movies because i wanted to be like mulan and viola to get to do "man" things and here i am finally knowing why i wanted to be like them, also i wanted to see viola get the girl at the end...any way, dont know if any other trans kid had a similar experience to mine.
Everyone should watch it again with the DVD commentary. Equally as good as the movie itself! Seriously.
Thank you! I will!
I was going to write the same thing. One of my favorite movie commentaries ever!!!
To answer your question about why Sebastian went to the other school (Illyria if my memory serves), he got expelled from his previous school (Cornwall I think) for ditching class for doing things related to his music. If you recall the reason why Sebastian left in the first place is his band went to do a small tour in London.
He was definitely not a soccer player.
I feel like a big chunk of the movie was missed by all 3 of you guys because of the confusion over Sebastian coming back from London lol. Sebastian was sent to Illyria because he kept getting kicked out of schools. When he got back from London, he was kissed by Olivia and he went back to his room. He was still asleep when the players came to tell him that he needed to get to the field. So yeah he was confused but he was also half asleep so he just went with it lol
Love this episode! One of my fav movies! To answer some of the pod questions you asked about movie plot:
1. Yes they are in high school. Viola and Sebastian are twins aka same grade.
They are rival private rich kid schools.
2. Sebastian got kicked out of Cornwall for ditching/doing bad in school so his parents enrolled him at Illyria.(Viola goes to Cornwall, but it’s spring break which is why she’s not in school. Sebastian was never into sports he was into music so him and Viola were already known for having “gender norm” swapped identities with their parents)
Thank you for clarifying the Sebastian/Cornwall scenario I was yelling at my screen lmao
24:13 Channing Stockard Tatum…😂🤣😂
Stockard Channing is the actress who played Rizzo in Grease 😂🤣😂
let’s be real Duke Orsino was the sexual awakening for many of us, and the extra layer of being named after a Shakespeare character?? We love a man with layers
They are all named after Shakespearean characters as it is a modern adaptation of twelfth night
@@Strawb_Goblin ya
Everyone says mean girls is the best comedy but I find she is the men way more funny. And I feel like it’s so underrated
Also,
Most quotable movie ever.
"You like cheese?"
Zach's genders-wapping costume story is EXACTLY the same as Jeff's story in Community about being forced to dress like a girl for Halloween and being mortified that they didn't realize he was a boy, only to later be relieved that people thought he was pretty lmao
YES FINALLY!! This movie is so nostalgic! Would also love to see you all cover Never Been Kissed and how problematic yet iconic is it.
YES I love Never Been Kissed even though there are definitely so many questionable scenes in it.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I’ve rewatched it so many times, I can quote the entire movie. It’s now a party trick I do for my friends. It’s honestly so iconic and I’m glad it is still getting the recognition it deserves after almost 2 decades
Magic Mike hits different when he’s got a tampon up his nose
Finally the episode I have been waiting for!! She’s the Man is a comfort movie.
i watched mila tequila's amanda bynes series on youtube so insightful on her life. unfortunately this movie specifically played a role in her spiraling as it caused her alot of gender dysphoria. one of her biggest movies had her dressed as a man for like 80% of the time and her image was very girl next door. meanwhile her contemporaries were seen as beautiful it girls of the 2000s. it really messed with her head. hoping she's getting the help she needs! this movie meant so much to many people including myself
'my favourite's gouda' is in fact a cultural turning point
To be fair Cornwall (Viola's initial school) cut the soccer team not just because. It was cut because not enough students signed up meaning there wasn't enough girls to form a team. Also I think Sebastian going to play soccer was him kinda waking up all delirious (and probs jetlagged) and stumbling to the field cause Olivia mentioned it and then was trying to find her (cause he says "Soccer game that's what that girl was talking about) and then because everyone thought he was Viola Sebastian they just got him prepped and shoved him out there and it all happened so fast and he just didn't have time to ask what was going on and why he was there and was just rolling with it. At least that's kinda how I saw it.
I honestly am in the camp of Channing Tatum looks like a thumb thumb from spy kids with a great body
Watching this made me realize how insane it is that you guys haven’t don’t Easy A yet 😂
Stockard Channing is a famous actress. She played Rizzo in Grease and Aunt Frances in Practical Magic, amongst many other roles. Probably why those names sounded right together. Love her.
I was not outwardly bi when this movie came out but being into Viola in both forms....ya that helped solidify things for me. I knew it was homophobic, but I loved it? Idk how. 💙
"My favorites gouda". . . Is the #1 line
Lol Stockard Channing is a different actress, which is probably why Stockard seemed familiar.
YES! Came to the comments for this. I'm glad I'm not the only one who knew why it sounded so right! Haha 😁
A LEGEND TOO! I wonder if Zach knowingly dropped her name in there or if it was just a subconscious thing but I am glad we all caught it right away 😂
ok zach has the best jackets, STUNNING.
You didn’t bring up the fact that this movie is the reason for many of Amanda Bynes mental health problems. She felt that when she was Sebastian she looked too realistic or something like that
" do you wanna know the rules of the orgy or not? ". Lol
for some reason I just remembered motocrossed which is a dcom that follows the same basic plot of a girl taking her twin brother's place CAN YOU GUYS WATCH THAT
That movie was so much better. I think I disliked she's the man even more because I loved motocross and expected it to be more like that.
@@milesmoss8839 I think they did a better job with casting as far as looks go too because the twins looked more alike and were both actually great at the sport
As someone in the transmasc community, this movie and “Just One of the Guys” 1985, Disney’s “Motorcross” 2001, “Mulan”-obviously, and I’m know there were others I can’t remember, where so influential for me. My style of humor was very similar to OG Amanda Bynes so having her play this gender bending role was huge! Obviously there are problems with it bc of the era it was created but when there was basically no positive representation anywhere, we turned to farcical adaptation for entertainment.
Wish you could have gotten a trans guest for this one just bc it would have been a great opportunity to celebrate trans joy for your listeners/viewers/fans.
I say “i got a lot on my knowledge” way more than i should. I got the DVD for this movie when I was like 8 or so and I still show people it bc it’s so good.
It’s “I’ve got a lifetime of knowledge”
The OG Guilty Pleasures Trio is back! Thank you for bringing a smile on our faces ♥️
This is one of my all time faves! My sister & I never stopped quoting this movie. Plus, it was the world's intro to Channing Tatum.
Sebastian did not get into the school due to soccer he was kicked out of yet another school and was then enrolled by his parents in this boarding school.
'Sydney White' is another Amanda Bynes film that is definitely worth reviewing for the podcast!
If you LOVE amanda bynes you guys HAVE TO watch What a girl wants! One of my all time childhood favorites !!
As a trans man who grew up watching this movie ! YESSSSS THIS MOVIE IS EVERYTHING
As an Amanda, when you guys were giving props to Amanda, I took that for myself. Lol thank you
When I was a child my mom bought me Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul and it MADE ME CRY FOR WEEKS I HATED IT
I still don't understand why they're confused about Sebastian not being good at soccer. He doesn't play soccer. I wouldn't be surprised if he's never played soccer. He's a musician, that's his thing, Viola plays soccer, that's hers. She attends a boarding school as her brother, who has never even been to this boarding school. She chose to try out for the soccer team, pretending to be her brother, so that she can then be on the boys team. You can tell when Sebastian is told to play, he's really confused as to why and how he even got put on the team.
Her brother was never into soccer. He was going to the boarding school for some other reason. Towards the beginning, Viola is trying out for the soccer team; Sebastian wasn't on the team, until Viola tried out as Sebastian
This is one of my all time favorite movie. Definitely watched over 30 times. That said I'm angry this is one of the only modern teen Shakespeare movie not to get a tv series (i.e. clueless and 10 things I hate about you) and I see it easily do so. Olivia and Duke questioning their sexualities after finding out is a good 3-5 episode arc alone not to mention Viola dealing with the legality of her actions and any gender dysphoria that could come from pretending to be her brother for so long
I squealed when I saw what movie you guys are covering YESSS
I literally rewatch this movie at least twice a year. Most recently like last month 😆. This is the Guilty Pleasures I needed
Edit: excuse me Violet?! It was Viola 😬😆😆
EDIT: Kelsey saying that Channing Tatum was goofy looking had me like “what?! That man is so attractive, 100% genuinely attractive” and then she follows it with “doesn’t he look like an MMA fighter” and everything clicked 😆 yeah that’s my type 😆😆
Straight up nostalgia, I haven't thought of this movie in years. You guys gotta do The fifth element, talk about an unfair rotten tomatoes score.
I have seen this movie/the commentary with this movie an obnoxious amount of times and one of my fave fun facts is that when Channing Tatum did that fancy flip to throw the ball in it actually only went like 3 feet 😂😂😂😂
I’m a 27 y/o transmasc nonbinary person and oh my fuck I watched this movie when it came out and it honestly did so much for me in regards to realizing gender expression - I have been worried about rewatching it since I haven’t since I came out almost a decade ago but ya’ll really got me hyped to rewatch it thank you so much 💖✨
LOVE Amanda Bynes!! I am really glad she seems to be in such a good place now after everything she's gone through.
Love you guys!!! Thank you for making my Mondays so much more fulfulling with your movie podcasts!
This movie is forever be one of my favorite movies, so many iconic moments
The David Cross headmaster thing makes me think of Bob Saget playing Danny Tanner in Full House. I had no idea Bob Saget's stand up was like that.
Not me wanting to ask the deli counter if they like Gouda whenever I see it at the store 😂
One of my all time favorite movies. I had it on DVD and memorized the title screens. I used to watch it everyday after school. Love the cast, love the story, and love the homage to Shakespeare. Also, all the character names are from Shakespeare as well. So good!
I LOVE Amanda and she's past my kid years. She's been my girl since What a girl wants. I've watched all her movies but this one holds a special place in my heart because of the goofiness of her character. Love it!
This is my all time guilty pleasure!!! YAYY!
The confidence of Kelsey doing several different man accents and manspreading after criticizing Amanda Bynes for doing the same thing 🤣
The soccer scene made sense since it was meant to be a dream and nothing ever makes sense in dreams. The weird shots, sudden changes and coloring were eeriely accurate.
this is one of the most quotable movies ever lmao
i've watched she's the man so many times that i can recite the characters' lines as i watch it😂 and i quote this movie too and use their lines as responses in daily conversations. hahaha this movie will always be a classic fav of mine
Hi there! 28 y/o pansexual polyamorous trans man here! I’ve only been out as trans for 6 months, and looking back at my childhood, I was hyper fascinated with movies like these. I remember watching this and taking notes on how she was “a man” and trying to do the same things 🤣 I ended up being hyper feminine for most of my life in order to try to be who I thought society wanted me to be. I’m now embracing who I am, and Zach, you emanate the kinda soft boy vibes I aspire to have! Thanks for thinking of the trans community when covering this movie.
Chicken Soup for the Soul had ALL THE DRAMA. I definitely remember the drain story.
I remember seeing this in the theaters with my sisters and we were DYING, we thought it was so funny. I wonder if I would still laugh as hard if I were to watch it today.
garrick gotta get his cheese info straight cause gouda is so good
It is my favorite - especially smoked gouda BUT I have to credit this movie for making me try it in the first place just because of that line 😅
i really wish they talked more about the actual movie.
Zack I'm obsessed with your jacket. It's giving me cozy aloha
I love this movie and I am glad it not just my Guilty pleasure lol 😆
Lmao Zach was thinking about Stockard Channing when he said his middle name.
As a trans adult. Yeah this movie gave me gender envy and I was just like I wish I could do that. I want to be a boy. And then didn't question myself again for 10 years. I didn't connect the dots for a while
Now this is an episode im excited to watch!!
Everyone looks amazing in this episode
the sapphic stuff that happened in this movie was my high school awakening. i watched this movie 7 times in theaters and i loved it sooo much. it's problematic but i still love it.
I can’t tell you how many times I reference this movie because I really feel it some of her experiences at times in the most insane way lol this movie is a big part of my identity for sure
stockard channing played rizzo in grease!
She's an amazing actress and has played a lot of excellent roles as well. I highly suggest watching more of her films if you haven't.
Rizzo is the only good character in Grease. That's my hot take of the day. lol
My college just reinstated their mens soccer team after it was cut in the 90s 😂😂😂
Okay, now it is time for you guys to do What A Girl Wants!!
y'all need to give Channing the props he deserves, do 21 & 22 jump street
YES! My favorite movie. Im so excited to listen later today.
Yes let's get more questions from the audience about movies. Because yall be glossing over stuff I want more in depth about
I made my husband watch this with me on Saturday when I saw this was the upcoming movie ❤️❤️
Kelsey is right about Channing Tatums face, like I realised he do be looking goofy
Just looked it up, Channing Tatum’s middle name is Matthew! 😂
No Sebastian went to the boy's boarding school because he got kicked out of the one he and Viola went to together. And he skipped town and went on his music show tour in the UK while Viola pretended to be him at the school.
'This is Shakespearean' Of course it is! This is literally Twelfth Night, it even has a character named Viola who cross dresses. This movie is based off of the play, this is like 10 things I hate about you.
YAS! Finally this gem of a film!
I was so hyped for this episode and I'm weirdly disappointed by the plot points y'all got wrong since you just watched the movie. Also the character's name is Viola, not Violet.
Okay so feel free to correct me but I remember that the brother got kicked out of his old school so he's supposed to start that boarding school. His sister, Viola, was dating the boys soccer captain at her school when her girls team was cut and she made the comment that she should be able to join the boys team. The boys team laughed at her and she asked her bf to back her up ("you told me I was better than half your team") and he didn't so she broke up with him. She finds out her brother is going to ditch his first weeks of school and they have a team that will go against the boys team of her school so she tries to join to prove she's just as good of a player as the boys.
This is one of my all time favorite movies, I've seen it so many times! I even watched it with the Actor Commentary on, which was weird because people's personalities were not what I thought they'd be 🤔
ZACH USING THE WORD SAPIOSEXUAL JUST MADE MY ENTIRE WEEK. Not sure if he knows what it means though 😅
every Monday I watch whatever movie y'all tell me to watch and then come watch the podcast but with this movie I got 15 minutes in and went "well I know exactly where this is going" and then came back and finished the podcast. Needless to say I was correct in my guess of exactly where the movie was going
Lol Channing Stockard Tatum sounded right because Stockard Channing played Rizzo in Grease😂
“Is it religious? Is it like veggie tales?” 😂😂😂
Whenever I see or eat gouda I think about She's the Man. Iconic
Hahahaha Channing Stockard Tatum. I am pretty sure I have made a Stockard Channing Tatum joke before. It sounds right because Stockard Channing is an amazing actress (Rizzo in Grease, Mrs. Bartlett in the West Wing)
