I'm a little surprised at how clean the impeller area was with how much gunk the sponges had in them-- very good design! Nice filter and great video, Daniel! 🙂👍
Haha... I find it quiet therapeutic servicing the aquarium equipment. Long as I don't do anything daft like kicking over a bucket or dropping a light in a tank. 😆
awesome video! Just bought and set up my fx2 for my turtle tank. LOVE that you reused the filter water as natural fertilizer. One word of caution for anyone out there (although this is common sense), be careful to spread only on non-edible plants! You might be able to get away with spreading on seedlings before they fruit, but you don't wanna be eating anything you spill filter water on. Especially leafy greens! they are recalled for e.coli from grocers all the time for this very reason
Great maintenance video Daniel! I must admit my betta choice 2000 i clean out once a month and thats on my african cichlid tank. The fx filters are just made to last and make keeping your aquariums cleaner for longer. Cant beat using fish tank water on your homegrown products. Thanks for sharing mate 😊
First FX I've had mate and gotta say I'm blown away so far. Yeah the corgettes have started shooting already. Definitely gonna keep them fed with the water change waste and filter gravy.
Fab video, really impressed with the fx2. Best purchase ever. Does really well on my L200 phantom tank. Hands down the best filter I've ever owned. Thanks for sharing your experience with us Daniel. Liked and shared to Facebook
Hi mate, just a little tip when putting the sponges back, a lot of people just push them back in but they need to be sitting proud of the basket so that they seal against the tray above, same with the top tray so that it seals against the lid. I usually push them in, straighten them up especially in the bottom corners of the tray through the square cutouts then pull the top of them back up so there not compressed into the basket, they will sit about a cm higher so they butt up against the tray above and also squash up against the second sponge next to it to seal it all off, any gaps around the sponges will allow bypass into the biological area, i run mine with filter wool in the top tray and the media sections are spotless when it comes to cleaning, all the best
Good tip mate. Thanks so much for sharing so everyone can benefit from that. I'm going to play with the media a wee bit and if I have enough to do a video about it I'll maybe do a follow up and give you a mention.
I love my fx2 but it's a shame that bottom tap/valve wasn't included that the fx4-6 has for ease of releasing the water out of the cannister without having to leak a bit of water everytime that lid is taken off when it's cleaning time!
I guess the bigger models are harder to lift when they're full but less so the smaller FX2 so figured the tap wasn't necessary for most people but I get some people would still struggle with the weight. I normally drop mine in the tub or tip it out a bit outside. You could always siphon some water out before moving it too. 👍
Dear Daniel: I can see how cleaning a canister filter, less often, might be preferable to using a hang-on-the-back (HOB) filter. I’ve never used a canister filter. I’ve used internal, box filters, but discontinued them, as they take up too much real estate. Sponge filters do the same, but tend to be less hassle. For me, HOB’s are ideal. I see that your tank looks a bit sparse, with regards to flora. I’d recommend fast-growing, tall plants like water wisteria and anacharis. If you can get them to grow, I’d also recommend jungle vallisneria (Vallisneria Gigantea). That one doesn’t do well in Ohio River water, which is what I have. Thank you for sharing your, terrific video on how to use this, fine product. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
Thanks for your suggestions E. J. It was much heavier planted until I changed the substrate out recently and bit a big thin out of the Crypts. I don't think the Sevs are going to let me get away with all plants I might have kept in there but the Wendtii is pretty tough as is the Java Fern so I'm just going to let them grow in again for now.
Dear Daniel: Yes, parrot cichlids (Amphilophus citrinellus x Paraneetroplus synspilus) are limiting the plants my, friend Charles can keep, in his 72-gallon, bow-front tank. I stick with fauna that don't harm plants, as I appreciate aquatic flora, very much. As hardy, tough plants fill in, your aquascape will look even better. It looks fantastic, thus far. Thank you for your, continued correspondence and assistance. Sincerely, Brinegar
I never got any notification for your video, go figure, like you said if you only have to clean it 6 x a year it's not that bad, I always clean my filter foam with the hose outside with a jet spray, gets all the crud right out of it, I don't worry about killing off any of the bacteria that is on the foam because I use a lot of filter media in my canisters, looks like a nice filter and not too bad to clean.
Yeah a few people have said they didn't get a notification. Not sure what's going on with that but not too bothered either. Folk will find the video if they're interested in it I guess. Thanks for sharing your way of doing it. Bet the jet blasts the waste right out of it. Could do a video on that yourself if you haven't already hey.
I noticed how fluval shifted their pricing to incorporate this filter making them all dearer but great content as always i know i dont always comment but i do watch all your vids ,,,
@AQUAGUYUK haha.. better get yourself to Specsavers mate. Heard they're doing hearing impairment aids too nowadays. Can clear up both those things you said in one. 😉💙
@@DanielKeepingFish Oh on that note i have the fx 4 and just ordered the upgrade kit from Richard at filter pro so will be good to see how that goes i should really get it up and running as i should be getting a new tank soon oh and the spray bar kit
It’s not as good as this mind, I’m liking the narration/ voiceover idea, Daniel I might try that instead of 5 takes picking the best one Then trying to dealing with sound level matching Once again great work 👍
@AQUARIUM DELIRIUM haha.. I have to do voice overs because there is way too much going on here. I have to wait until everyone is in bed to do the audio otherwise it will be a rabble.
The FX range of filters are fantastic, I’m already running the FX6 and 4, plus a number of 07’s and have a FX 2 on order, my only question is why don’t you rinse the baskets off? But a great video as usual 👍
Ah yeah I should have mentioned those you're right. I don't often rinse them off to be honest. I don't find they get gunned up much and I'm sure there's a nice bit of bacteria build up on them so I only really rinse the media and put it back together. I don't rinse out the canister either, just give it a wee swish and tip out what's there. They are great canisters hey. Definitely one of if not the best in my opinion.
Just wondering, how often do you do water changes and what percentage do you change? Great video all your info will be very helpful when i do my 1st clean on mine.
So I generally go for 30% once a week but it's all relative hey. Things like how heavily stocked and planted we are, how heavy we feed, etc will all have an impact on how much maintenance we do but I don't think we can go far wrong with 20 or 30% weekly and either ramping it up or dialing it back to find the sweet spot that works.
I ended up cutting the lid. I made a video about it. I'll put the link at the bottom of this comment but just in case that doesn't work, it was about six or seven videos back. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/uDUqwR74p-0/v-deo.htmlsi=ZWAGbYXcR0xJhTcA
How does this compare to your Oase? I have a 300L community tank with moderate planting and can’t decide between FX2 and Biomaster 600. Your help would be so very much appreciated
Honestly I like them both. I'd say they will both get you great results. I prefer the Fluval for a few reasons like it's more powerful. It feel solid, less brittle than the Biomaster and I like the hose connections and lid locking system. Only thing the Biomaster has over the Fluval is the pre-filter chamber which I have to say is pretty useful but if I were buying either tomorrow it would be the Fluval. Just my opinion but hope it helps.
***When restarting the canister make sure it's at least two thirds full with tank water. I missed that from the video***
Hope you dont mind i linked this video with a card
Great informative video yet again Daniel 💯
Thank you very much bud.

Thanks Tara. Yeah I was surprised by that too. Thought there was going to be loads of fish waste goo in there to pull out.
Even something as mundane as a filter clean out, you make interesting. Well done mate!!!
Cleaning out a canister filter... mundane.. whaaa...?
Haha.. thanks man.
i must be abit crazy as i found this relaxing 😂

Thanks very much Alison. Gotta agree with you there. The FX 2 does appear to be one of the very best, certainly the best I've used so far.
@@DanielKeepingFish yea bit of a price tag but well worth it in my opinion
@Alison Nicholson sure, you get what you pay for I reckon.

Nope. Filter cleaning videos rock! I quite enjoy cleaning them out too. Perhaps you shouldn't trust my judgement then haha..

It’s always a problem with water spilling with canisters 🙏✌️🇨🇦
I have the fx2 but ive put the bio media rings in loosely. What size media bags are you using for your fx2
