    I live in Costa Rica. If you are going to only go to tourist towns and partake in tourist activities then of course it's going to be expensive and feel like a tourist trap. This video is lacking so much of the magic of Costa Rica and hardly does it justice. I have never paid 30usd for breakfast at any soda this typical breakfast you have usually costs around 4 mil it 8 bucks at most sodas in Costa Rica or at least on the carribean side where I live.

      @ktara1033 you sound extremely bitter and this is a generalized statement. Why would you say flies in your coffee? you are not a nice person and extremely disrespectful to the people on this country. Please anyone e reading this do not listen to this negativity.

      I’ve traveled twice to Costa Rica and also never paid more than 6-7$ at a soda. That being, Monteverde is a tourism hotspot so I could see why prices were higher. In general, local restaurants are cheaper all over the country.

    What a beautiful country, my mood improved when I saw that big parrot!
    The first sloth seems to be looking at you, it’s so cute!
    That bowl of seafood Don is so tempting, and the cake looks delicious too!
    If I stand on the Crocodile Bridge and look down for a minute, my heart will beat rapidly and my feet will feel numb!
    I didn’t expect the fried chicken there to be so cheap, so I would probably eat it every day, haha!
    Hummingbirds are so cute, but they are bigger than I thought, wow!
    The Zip-line turns you into a superman, and the swing turns you into a giant. It feels so exciting!
    Costa Rica is really beautiful and it is a must-have on the list of tourist destinations. Of course, I hope their prices can be lower!
    You decided to stay a few more weeks, it has proved itself, thank you so much for sharing! Take care! Happy travels! 👍🥰🙏

    I just got back from CR a few days ago. It’s definitely changed from the last time I was there. It’s expensive for a Central American country. I use to want to live in CR but I changed my mind, too many ex pats now. It’s a very beautiful country and the people are very friendly. To me it doesn’t make sense to live here with its prices comparable to the US. It’s actually cheaper to live where I’m from in Texas. Food and fuel are cheaper in parts of the US than CR. The rental cars prices are ridiculous. But it’s worth it if you’ve never been! Pura Vida.

    • @courtneymicheline1962
      @courtneymicheline1962 4 місяці тому +5

      good yes stay in texas 🤣where they drill their own oil and can sell to you cheaper. rental car prices are ridiculous to anyone outside their national country...try renting a car at JFK airport as a non resident and see what you pay 🤣If you have the money to waste on a rental car then I always advise people to travel around the country on Sansa airlines vs drive the country because you can hit up many towns in less than 45 minutes flights from san jose and some hoppers go in between towns vs spending hours to cross the country and paying 900 a week for a rental for the same price you can take 8 flights around costa rica and be able to spend more time in each region. SMH at the texan who solely relies on autos for transportation. you dont have to rent a car here there are also less expensive easily accessible public transportation to anywhere in the country.

      I agree, its a great place to visit but to live you need remote income . You can live affordably in the central valley in certain areas, anywhere near the coast forget about it. I have done 2 - 2 week trips in the last 6 months, my girl friend is a Tica . If you stay long term or extended stay I way prefer the central valley. The weather in the central valley is insane year round weather and that is worth the price to me. Honestly there is no where in states I would choose over Costa Rica to live .No offense but Texas would not be nowhere near the quality of life of Costa Rica . You can live very well on $2000 on month and most decent places in world you need that income. If you compare that to Hawaii or Cali its not that expensive . I know what youre saying though ...

    I really enjoyed your video, most of the time I felt as if I was there with you; it was seamless. One of the most honest reviews about my country, Its 100% True, the prices are ridiculous. Most Ticos who have vacation don't even spend their time/money here, we go to Panama, Columbia, Peru, the U.S or even Europe. Red Taxis are expensive, they see you as an ATM. (Don't be fooled I would make effort to speak english too if I can charge you double lol) Travelers Tip: For those who don't have their own transportation, Uber, DiDi, or even inDrive function in most locations (I would say 70% of the country). Most (Not All) people who come from the U.S move to the northern part of Costa Rica so pretty much everything above Punta Arenas, and while Manuel Antonio is in the central part of the country the prices are pretty spot on if you decide to come here. If you travel to obviously see the beach, the mountains, or rain forest the prices are inflated in those areas but if you move at least 2-3 kms from that general area you'll find cheaper prices for food and basic necessities. (Ask for the chinos they're almost always cheaper). But aside from the prices the natural beauty is something that just can't be summarized. Waking up to the sound of the ocean in the morning, or the monkeys with a coffee in your hand when you look at the mountains is hard to put a price on. Happy Traveling, Pura Vida 🤙🏽

The trick is to know time of year or time of day to go places. Being a local I can do things midweek and during low season. We went in April to Quepos and the Osa Peninsula. The first was gorgeous but definitely touristy, the second stunning (but no nice beaches), quiet, and little populated. We loved much about the country, but all 4 of us got horrible food poisoning and lost about 4 of our 9 days, even though we were trying to be soooooo careful (bottled water, no ice, packaged and fried foods, etc). The culprit? The ketchup bottle on the table at one lunch place. So yeah - stick to individually packaged condiments and enjoy the wonderful scenery and the lovely people. And yes, the food costs, even at the locals grocery store, were comparable with the prices in midsized cities in the US

    Well covered you guys :)
    I strongly suggest you visit El Salvador as an option.
    The high prices in Costa Rica are the result of the country being very popular for a while. El Salvador on the other hand, offers quite similar natural wonders for a fraction of the price even considering the national currency is the USD.
    You will also experience a more genuine experience with the locals since they are still genuine and don't see a dollar sign on your forehead as it happens often in Costa Rica.

    I was just there in January and yes, it's more expensive than anywhere else in Central America. However, for most people if you do some research ahead of time you'll understand this is going to be the case before you get there. We rented a car, which was expensive, but you see the entire country. To control costs we got Airbnb's with kitchens so we ate breakfast and most of our dinners at the "house" while eating out for lunch. We stayed for 11 days and it wasn't cheap but it wasn't out of control. Overall I thought it was worth it and I don't regret going.

    Welcome to this little piece of land that every Tico is in love with and sickly in love with. I hope you enjoy your stay with us. There is something that is very important that you must understand, Central America is not a homogeneous area, each country has its own peculiarities and although there are differences between El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua, they are united by many customs and their way of being and living, but this is not applicable to Costa Rica; If we Costa Ricans (Ticos) appreciate something, it is that our concept of life is essentially the search for the greatest possible happiness for our children, the approach we have given to our environment, our lives, our values and aspirations are not like the that our Central American brothers share among themselves; In this way we are not better or worse than them, just different, very different; It is important at this point to refer to the fact that Costa Rica has the highest Human Development Index in Latin America, it is the most solid democracy in the Contimente and our standard of living cannot at all be compared to that of our neighbors, with the sole exception of our dear brothers from Panama, from whom we differ greatly in many aspects, but whom we love dearly; So you expect our country to be what it is and that you have discovered a little of how much Costa Rica offers and also hope that it is cheap? That's not logical. Costa Rica is more than a country for tourists; Our country is the desire for development, social well-being, education, health and a very good standard of living that we wish for our children; Here we think that Costa Rica or Tiquicia, as we affectionately call our country, we do not inherit it from our parents, but rather we borrow it from our children and we will return it to them but improved, happier, fairer, more developed and better. So I share this great truth of our culture with all affection: "no Tico considers himself Central American", because we share nothing more than the language, the religion and one or another tradition, (in fact before Central America became independent from Spain Costa Rica was the poorest, most forgotten and unimportant Province in the entire region; that is why if we have achieved something over the years it is to look less and less like our neighbors, create a very well defined identity and have a very clear horizon. Only with quality education and a lot of work will we achieve the standard of living we aspire to, not for ourselves but for those who come after us and those we prepare for the future. Come back whenever you want, here people of good faith and happy people like you are always welcome and highly appreciated. Pura Vida!🇨🇷🕊🇺🇸

    Hi, I like your video a lot! What a nice couple.
    When you come to CR you have 2 options, #1 you can be a regular tourist and go to the regular touristic destinations and pay prices for tourists but you will see little costaricans in these places.
    #2 You guys could ask costaricans, what places you can get cheap and good food, what areas are nice and free of charge, etc. And have a much better value for your money and pay fair prices.
    But painting with a wide brush the entire country as super expensive is very ignorant. Saying that prices are too high for Costa Rica, comparing CR to Europe or US is wrong. Why the comparison?
    I can get lunch anywhere in CR for 5 to 7 usd and I do not think you can do the same anywhere in Europe or US. I can rent a nice house for about 500 usd per month in CR. I do not think US or UE have the same prices as CR but by you saying that just because is CR the prices are too high is in fact putting the country down.
    I prefer to pay 20 USD for lunch in Monteverde CR vs lunch in Paris for example (plus we got better food).
    In the video you mentioned that costaricans speak good English, so why don’t you ask someone where to go and have lunch? Ask for a place where locals go eat, ask for places where locals go visit (free) and stop complaining for prices.

    • @NaickKim
      @NaickKim  4 місяці тому

      You can actually have a good lunch for 7 USD in a lot of places in the US and Europe. We've even had 2 and 3 course menu's for less 10 USD in Paris in the past. Granted, this was a few years ago, so probably it's more.
      It's good that some local back spots have more affordable prices, we've seen those places too sometimes, but they aren't really available in towns like Monteverde and Manuel Antonio as far as we know. When we're in Monteverde, we're looking to eat in Monteverde, not in some small town 3 hours drive away.
      Prices of tours also feel pretty inflated and are definitely a lot higher than in Europe and the US.
      I don't see it as complaining, it's good to get the facts straight when it comes to prices. In general we really love Costa Rica and would recommend people coming here.

    • @jbbenabar5468
      @jbbenabar5468 4 місяці тому

      Wow you obviously didn’t get my point. I am from CR and I know anyone can get those prices anywhere. And tours are not mandatory. The country is safe enough so you can go anywhere at any time and enjoy places for free with out guidance. There are things that you have to pay for but that is common sense, right? I mean if you are getting overcharged just don’t pay for it.
      I don’t care if you can get a dinner in Spain for 3 usd dude, the point is that NO ONE is making you pay for those prices and if you are not welling to experience local food and or ask local people for these places then why complaining?
      I am aware that CR is not cheap, there are thing like buying a car that are crazy expensive, but saying that the entire country is expensive is very ignorant. Is like me going to New York come back home and complaining about how expensive is USA! LOL just crazy.@@NaickKim

Everything is behind a fence. So to visit a waterfall you have to pay 10 to 20 usd each. That is what makes live expensive. You can do your own night walk searching for frogs and fire flies. We liked canoeing in the small rivers of Tortuguero most. We spotted more animals near the (jungle) hotels we booked than waking through the parks. We almost bumped our heads against a slot hanging upside down above a busy path to a crowdy beach! You are not allowed to feed the animals but some guides do and they monkeys will eat bananas out of your hand. In Corcovado you will see Tapirs and Giant manta rays when snorkling. You need to pay the high tour prices to avoid missing the best spots.

      When there are 30 people around obviously pointing at a sloth in Manuel Antonio, of course you are allowed to look at it too :) I agree that there is a lot of 'gatekeeping' in Costa Rica. Any waterfall worth seeing will require an entrance fee, which is not the case in other countries. On the other hand, like you say, the monkeys are e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e in Costa Rica, even outside national parks etc, so it's very easy to spot cool stuff!

    "and of course locals aren't paying these prices" Of course we are, where in the menu did you see a local and tourist price? It's the same for everyone. CR has the highest salaries in all Latin America, you can't expect to pay cheap prices as the other countries just like you won't pay in the US or Europe. If you know a country isn't in your budget why bother going there in the first place?

    Costa Rica is expensive because it's like an extension of the usa, many Americans retire there.

      We still wonder how the locals are able to afford basic things. Supermarkets are more expensive than in the US here for a lot of things, while wages are a lot lower.

      If you wanna buy fruit and veggies, locals go to Las Ferias Del Mayoreo , Ferias del Agricultor or Mercados, also go to the Butcher stores for meat, go to Sodas for local food experiences, and avoid tourist places. For example, tourists will pay for Hot springs, and we go to free places like Tucancito, or Chollin in Arenal. You can explore free spots for landscapes sightseen. I can give you the best tips and recommend the best places. Like if you go to Guanacaste, you can spend a day in Tamarindo, Playa Conchal, bahía del pirata, and park your van in Playa Flamingo, which is fancy but free and really safe @@NaickKim

      Hey here in Alberta, 🇨🇦 we just experienced a Polar Vortex last weekend with temperatures below -40. In comparison Costa Rica looks good at any price.
