    We had one of these on a door that needed to be left open at a place I used to work. The one thing we noticed is that in order to work properly it had to be fastened on all 3 sides and stretched tight with just a slight overlap at the center. Once we mounted it that way it worked perfectly for the two years I was there. I think the reason why yours isn't working is you do not have it mounted in this fashion. We also used the tacks that came with it and threw the stupid Velcro strips in a drawer for some other project.

    I know someone with this on their backdoor and it works perfectly. I'm starting to think that maybe after an initial run, a lot of these items are downgraded in production standards to shittier, cheaper versions.

    • @EagleKai
      @EagleKai 10 років тому +13

      Looking at it, he didn't attach the sides to the frame, and the seam had some overlap. Still, this looks like a much shoddier version than the ones I've seen in the past (and the one I had seen before got horribly torn by a dog going through it at speed).

    • @Burneri
      @Burneri 10 років тому +4

      EagleKai not to mention the "fold" on left side panel going from top left corner towards bottom right corner... suggesting the panel on that side is placed on angle so that it naturally goes more to left making it even harder if not impossible to close without help´after its open.

    Well, Mike, you haven't set that up properly at all. The sides are supposed to be attached as well, and the top was a tad too spread apart.
    Regardless, the sticky pads were garbage, so even if it had gotten set up properly, it would probably end up falling down anyways.

      Nah, not everywhere. Say for example places with short summers, like in Scandinavia. When you'll only have something like a month's worth of screen door worthy weather any given year, those detachable nets are more likely to be worth the money than an entire extra door.

      And in places in the states, there are these really dumb things called "covenants" where in a nicer neighborhood, there's a literal ban on things that make a house look lower quality, and screen doors are usually the first thing on those ban lists.

    My family had one of these for our back door and for awhile it worked. But the thing is if you live in a place that gets quite windy like Arizona, like I do, it will fall apart after one or two wind, dust, or just monsoon storms. Plus it wouldn't stay together causing the flaps to bang around making an irritating noise. So...I WOULD NOT recommend it. It is a cheap piece of plastic mesh, Velcro, and magnet garbage.

    I have one of these and it doesn't close on it's own after you walk through it, you have to actually push the magnets together to close it. also theres a small space between the two halves that bugs can still fly through, and they can easily crawl under the bottom of it too...

  • @Ghost11010

    I had one of these for my balcony porch at my old place. The adhesive on the velcro was very weak and didn't stick. In the end we duck taped it the the door frame, which offered the most support. Even with that support all across the top and the bottom, the magnets proved to be just as weak as the adhesive on the velcro. We had to manually close it every time we went out, including the dog. Eventually we just threw it out. The duck tape, which was added for support, was the only strong and working thing about it all.

    I had these, they work for a short amount of time but then the sticky pads lose their adhesiveness and then the whole thing is useless, it would be really good if it could stay up properly. If you can get it cheaper I would recommend it and come up with a homemade solution to actually keep the stick parts attached to the doorframe.

  • @Ernoskij
    @Ernoskij 6 років тому

    It looks to me like there aren't whatever is holding the middle part stiff in the infomercial in Mike's version, the way it moves when it snaps back clearly indicates that there is something stiff in the center part, which would also ensure the magnets line up properly for catching each other. When it's jus thte mesh like it looks on Mike's there isn't really anything to guide the magnets back to each other

    I have one of these, just from a different brand from the look of it. It works perfectly every time and has never fallen off, even after a whole year of using it. I think it did require some setting up, maybe with screws, but that's better than those sticky pads from the version in the video.

  • @JosephJamesScott
    @JosephJamesScott 10 років тому

    I have a product that's similar on my front door that works fairly well, but you need to attach it properly to the door, and that includes the sides. I will attest that the sticky mesh doesn't work well at all though, especially in the hot summer months, but then if you're looking for a year round solution you're better bet is getting an actual screen door.
    I wouldn't say that it's a great product but I do think it's far better then your review suggests. Then again I got mine at a retail store and not from mail order. I would suggest that if you set it up properly the screen might get a passing review. You are spot on about the adhesive though.

    ive got one of these and it works fine, it came from lidl and cost about £4. the one I got online that cost more than that was crap and didn't work, its down to how strong the magnets are. I can vouch for the lidl's one, magnets are really strong. also, u have gotta stick it all the way around the frame, and it goes on the inside, rub down the door frame with alcohol before u put the Velcro on it and it won't come off again.

    Apparently the manufacturer matters. Mine came with a roll of velcro stripping used to line the doorframe in an upside-down U shape to hold the screen firmly in place on 3 sides, and the closure has magnets running the length of the seam, and seals itself silently. It's been 100% reliable at keeping yellowjackets out of the house and 99% reliable at stopping flies and mosquitoes (who will sometimes actually search the seam for an opening), as sometimes happens on the bottom due to the screen being a few inches longer than the frame. (protip: wipe the frame with isopropyl acohol and let dry before applying adhesive.)

      That and the openings between the magnets are large enough to let bugs in regardless. They manage to get in through small cracks, they can get in through 4-5inch openings...

    after doing these for a year you should do an awards ceremony kinda thing and give "awards" out for the worst products. Maybe come up with some kinda categories like worst foot product. Best advertisement lie worst cheese grater and overall worst product of the year.

    You only taped down the top part. also you should try and add some weights to the bottom edges of the net so they sorta clang together instead of wafting in the wind. Might have worked i dunno.

      I was thinking that it'd be attached at the top and bottom too... maybe even pulled somewhat tightly so it wanted to go together.

    when we had this it worked fine but the dog tore it up when we closed him outside. it came in a set of two so we put up the other one and were a bit more careful but the California sun somehow bleached the material and made it fall apart.

    we have the magic mesh and it works for us....after my fiancé struggled with it for an hour, nailing the mesh to the door frame.

    Maybe try a staple gun to secure it along the top and down the sides, those sticky tabs are truly useless. The downside to staples is that they will leave holes in your doorframe if you don't intend the mesh to be permanent.

    I've got one of these and it works fine. He hasn't attached it a the sides just at the top. Once taught it works properly

    My dad got this for me after the screen door broke. The mesh lining ran and constantly got caught in the door.Finally it decided to give up and fell down after a few days. This product is just as bad as this video shows.

    I own or own one of these they are amazing when you have pets and live out in the middle of nowhere in Michigan. However if it is very windy the sides open if you do not have at least one side completely pin down
