As a student of animation and a amateur animation historian, I just wanted to say a major thank you for taking time out of your life to give us all these tips and information. You clearly know your field and what it takes for newbies like me to get into. Again thank you for all that you do. Should our paths cross I would be honored to work on the same project with you. Thank you again.
@InHuman First & foremost they want to see that you are capable of animating anything. Be it objects like a bouncing ball or a character in motion. Also it is not about the length of your portfolio or demo reel. You can have 20 second one, so long as it only shows off your best work. Second don't have anything redundant. Don't just have like characters walking in place. Do one where it is a walk cycle then the next be maybe an expressive act. Third always be sure to leave your contact information. You would be surprised how many people forget this. And lastly be confident in your work. Don't downplay or criticize it. That's what the school's staff will do. Show that you made your work with pride, but not too much. Don't have an ego. I hope these tips help you. I have been struggling to find a job in the industry myself, but that doesn't mean you should feel down by my words. Remain vigilant & keep your spirits up. With enough dedication & patience you will get a job or get into a school or position in animation.
This is so helpful thank you! As an art student getting ready to start applying for animations companies setting up and figuring out my portfolio is a bit stressful. I’ll definitely be coming back to this and your previous video as reference to get my stuff ready!
Thank you for this Laura!!! Seriously! I've just applied for a MA in Illustration on a whim having never really done anything like it before and have got an interview in 6 weeks, so this advice was GREAT. Going to kick my illustration self into shape!! And hopefully not die!!!
This was great! I've been working on projects to put together an environment portfolio and keep getting frustrated because I don't have experience in that industry, so after a while running into a bunch of mistakes because of things I didn't know starts to get overwhelming. You basically addressed everything I've been stressing about today, and now I'm much more motivated to keep working at it, so I'm probably going to refer back to this the next time it starts getting stressful. Thanks so much for doing this vid and the others!
I wanna start building a viz dev portfolio but i am confused where to start from, what story to pick or develop. What kind of work should one include in their personal project?
Thank you for this! I recently applied to a handful of jobs and only got one response and they said they were going with someone who had a stronger portfolio and I was crushed! I've lost confidence to apply. You've given me some great steps to take, though! I'm definitely going to be working on more turnarounds! ❤️
The biggest mistakes I found was people using work that wasn’t theirs in the book. One person looking for work sent a portfolio to Warner Bros and it made it’s way to Gary Hartle and myself. The storyboard samples were all from our Producer Gary Hartle. Now I imagine the person thought they would get hired on at Warner Bros and no one would be the wiser. The other case of portfolio fraud was when the husband of a really good background painter that we used a lot, sent us some of her samples. I suppose they figured we would give work to him and his wife would do it. Very strange.
Thank you so much for this video! I've been struggling with my portfolio and what to put into it and this video couldn't have come at a more perfect time!
Thank you so much! I'm almost graduating this year. I only have 4 months to go and I have to study everything you said in this video. I'm a beginner at animating
I just want to say thank you for this video. I no longer have a portfolio for my drawing and painting. But I am a photographer and currently I’m putting together a portfolio for a wedding venue. Been having a hard time to figure out what images to choose. This video has some good advice
I love you for referencing my favorite show. And I drew my pic to the left on I think day 2 of inktober for tranquil. Love the creator's art! Thank you for the advice
AGREED. This is WAY more informative than anything I've heard from our teachers, or even representatives from studios. We had someone from pixar show up at our school and all he talked about was how *he* got recruited because he was noted for his talent. When it was finally time for him to give us advice, all he said was, "show everything, and keep emailing us, we'll eventually get back to you, even if we don't the first dozen times" I was so upset.
Well, applying to an art school or for the AP Studio exam has vastly different requirements. You have to show that you're exceptionally creative and have a wide ability range, as well as strong fundamental skills. Applying for a job is very specific, so tailoring your portfolio to the job description is a must
Thank you so much for your videos. They are so helpful. Would it be possible for you to do a video emphasising on Character design especially highlighting the different kinds of turnarounds ?
Oof this is really old, but I hope you follow your passions! If you want to go into animation, I wish you the best of luck as a fellow animation student! If not, that's also okay!
Hi Laura thank you for the advices! Do you think it's better to focus on a specific field while building the portfolio - for example choosing characters or invironments? instead of doing both... thanks!
Thank you for a great video! Could you clarify the difference between 'looking cohesive' and not just having one style? I come from a graphic design background and have a range from packaging to website illustrations and children's books. How can I create cohesion while showing off the different styles?
Hey Laura would you be willing to go through your portfolio and give us examples of how many spreads you do and how much text you include etc. Thanks so much!
I have difficulties keeping short stories concise, do you have any tips/advice for coming up with a short story explicitly for portfolio purposes? My college had us center around designing and animating characters but never expanding them beyond an assignment and this has definitely left me feeling adrift.
Thanks a lot hahahahaha.,..this was really specific and helpfuli think...i will get on it and organize my mess and work on my own things to have something to show..!! you rock!!
on the part of being cohesive, i was thinking about splitting the mwu portfolio by sections, one part for animation, another for character design, storyboard etc. is this a bad idea?
A little late commenting. But I figured I'd ask. What would be your advice for someone that didn't finish school? I was in school but I had a lot of personal issues and never finished my degree. I would love to go back, but after paying off that debt, I'm not sure if I want to or really NEED to go back into debt. I know with visual art careers, your portfolio is far more important than your education. Times have really changed with social media too. I ended up working in retail and worked up into management positions. I ended up quitting a few months ago to pursue art. I work a few freelance web and graphic design jobs now, which is way better for me. And now I'm working on a graphic novel project. I also want to release artbooks for it as well.. Do you think something like that might help me to eventually land a job working for a company doing this despite never finishing my degree? Thanks so much! :D
Bobbi Shaw having a degree isn’t necessary! the most important thing is a killer portfolio :) also you’re already working on a graphic novel which is awesome! you could take online art courses through CGMA or Schoolism (there’s more I just can’t think of them now) or if you’re in the LA area you could sign up for individual classes at Concept Design Academy. you can pick and choose your classes for what area you want to work in or areas you want to improve in! a lot of artists in the industry don’t have degrees but have taken online courses like these, and they help you build a nice portfolio! Hope this helps :)
Thanks so much! It's great to know that there are people in the industry working that don't have degrees but have taken courses. Things were a lot different in the early 2000's when I was in college, where going to the right school was everything and if you didn't go to the big name schools (like me wheeee~), you were out of luck. That's super inspiring and motivating to know!
I'm a high school student building my portfolio right now, and I'm wondering if it's okay if include fan art there ? I know you said that it isn't reccommended for job applications, but will universities be more lenient ? A lot of personal pieces that I want to include in my portfolio are fan art, but I want to be sure if that's okay. thanks for the video, it was super informative !!

I understand you are very busy but I was wondering if there's a way I can have you look at my portfolio and give me advice. I really admire your success.
So i have this problem, i can draw as a pro but only in paper, is that a problem? I mean i can learn ti do ir with software but i don't know if i should do it or apply from now, also wich software should i use?
hi, I didn't go to art school or even apply! usually art school websites have a list online of what each one wants included in a portfolio application though!
A lot of good advice, thanks. I just recently put together a portfolio[a non digital one] but idk if it's good enough to show studios. By any chance do you give crits?
Thank you for sharing the info! And what is the Art of book thing you talked about? I've heard it in some other videos, but I don't really get what it is, is it just an artbook or is it a website?
Hey Lulu! I've always wanted to be a Storyboard artist within the animation industry (even when I like many things involved around it). But it's difficult for me to know where to start, and besides storyboards/animatics, would comics also be important for it? Any tips? I already want to thank you in advance. :)

@InHuman Glad I could help. Be sure to check out other experts' advice. Keep on learning.
@InHuman That all depends on what kind of animation job you are going for. It is a traditional 2D than go with that. If it is like 3D than go digital.
Excellent tips, especially with "do not add what you hate drawing".
This is so helpful thank you! As an art student getting ready to start applying for animations companies setting up and figuring out my portfolio is a bit stressful. I’ll definitely be coming back to this and your previous video as reference to get my stuff ready!
so glad it's helpful! thank you for watching! 💗
I can't even draw but I like listening to you :D
haha! aw thanks!
Lol same.
Thank you soo much Laura! I am a beginner artist, and knowing these things now rather than later is going to benefit me in so many ways.
So helpful, especially about the 8 point turn around for asymmetrical characters
I have 5 years until I even graduate but I really want to start doing some of these things to practice
Do it!!!
You’re my role model! I literally watch your videos during every break I get in class. I hope I can follow your steps when I graduate💕
Thank you for this Laura!!! Seriously! I've just applied for a MA in Illustration on a whim having never really done anything like it before and have got an interview in 6 weeks, so this advice was GREAT. Going to kick my illustration self into shape!! And hopefully not die!!!
I had to watch this again and make notes of everything you said :') You rounded it up and explained it so clearly!! I'm so grateful!!

I wanna start building a viz dev portfolio but i am confused where to start from, what story to pick or develop. What kind of work should one include in their personal project?
Thank you I need to know the dos and donts for a good portfolio.
Hi Laura. Thanks for your advice. While I may not be a wonderful drawer, I am more of a 3D animator, but your advice is still very helpful.
Thanks

I would be really interested to watch a video on how you personally set up your Blogger Portfolio. Like settings, layout, maintenance, etc

@@filastyle84 Well, most people *don't* talk to people, even the most common advice needs to be told.
I'm planning on moving to California to pursue a character design career. Your videos are giving me great advice!

Laura thanks for being so generous with your knowledge. 🌸

Thank you Laura Price for the advice on portfolios and how to set them up. Plus may I add that you are very beautiful.
