I like to think one of the older ladies aladdin interacts with in the beginning patched his pants 😂
Aladdin is pretty charming, I bet he could charm his pants into patching. Just by winking and smiling! :)
I had the exact same thought!! I turned to my bf and said, “I bet it was that lady who says ‘still I think he’s rather tasty’”! 😂
I’m almost 30, and thinking about going back to school in an animation program.
Your videos have a lot of useful tips, and I find that you’re pretty straight to the point. Although - there’s so many tips! Hah :)
hi, i'm new for this and i wonder.. what does a character designer do? make and draw the character only? or do animation also?
@@youtubepremium-gv7wo This is super late...but character designers don't animate. They just design characters
So excited to see fellow artist videos! Even though I already work in game studio.
Game studio isn't too different. One I need to tell people who interested to work in our industry, you definitely need to be able to draw from very basic like anatomy, shadow, lights. Sometimes internship have style in their drawing, pretty, but can't really draw basic things. We wish for employee who has unique characteristics in their drawing but also able to follow other styles. Cause it will be hard to work with someone who can't follow other artists concept.
The last, don't be stubborn. We're working in team. There's no bad or better art or who's the better. Sometimes we need to create very simple design even though we can draw more "beautiful" but We created art together and that's matter.
I wish I can make my own videos it will be fun. Cause I love sharing. but I do have anxiety to stay on camera. lol

sincerely your portfolio videos are so helpful. thank you
Have you thought of making Mabel into a human character? That would be so fun! 😄
I've been loving your channel the past year Laura. Can you possibly do a traditional character design tutorial in the future possibly? :)
Whats crazy is I watched this when it was first uploaded, loved it took notes, the whole shebang. Now that I am actually putting my portfolio together and preparing for CTNX 2019, I'm watching this for like the 4th time lol.
Super nervous , anxious and excited all at once!

Hi! Thank you so much for the help with the video! Your videos are one of the main reasons I’m looking at going into character design, and your videos have been really inspiring for me.
So thank you! I wouldn’t be on the path I am now without you and your UA-cam channel! ☺️
AHHH I absolutely adore your channel!!
This is like a goldmine for artist! Thank you Laura!
Update: just watched it and I legit took notes. Your insight is very much appreciated.
I'm planning to attend ctnx this November. All I can think about is how to present my work
Character designer in the making!!

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I’ve kinda going at my portfolio a little blind but now I have a clear idea of what to do! 😭
Oooh this is exactly what I was looking for!! I have a revision of my portfolio in two weeks and I need a good character design portfolio, and now you upload this video!!! Lucky me!! 😙😙😙
Thank you so much for making stuff like this. I want to be a character designer for an animating company one day, but the teachers I’ve had have little to no experience with that. Thank you for giving a quick heads up of what animation companies expect!
The character design portfolio really inspire me a lot
Thanks to Laura price , my inspiration on character designing would be desperately sick 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Yeeeeeees, your videos are always helpfull !!!! Thanks for the tips :D

At last!!!! I have been waiting for this since you made your last portfolio video. A million thanks to you beautiful lady!!! ☺☺☺☺
Very useful! I feel like I've been listening to a lecture for 1,5 hours. Even made lots of notes :) Thank you!
this is definitely the best portfolio advice video i've seen so far, thank you so much! your advice is gold ^^
this isn't even my industry but i watch your videos out of pure joy and curiosity. lots of props and credits to animators and illustrators. i took classes for my degree and realized how little the amount of patience i had. i'll stick to cinematography and color grading but i will also watch these just 'cause :DD
Thank you for dispelling some of the mystique around what makes a proper portfolio.
Abu. I'm pretty sure Abu is the stitching maestro.
Anyway, thanks for uploading this. Honestly, hearing you say that painting isn't required made me so so so happy. It's my weakest point because I spend so much time drawing. I definitely want to improve, but trying to teach myself character design and make a portfolio while working three jobs...definitely finding myself prioritizing, and painting's just been put on the back burner big time lately. I love your videos, and you're so inspiring. I've been feeling like I didn't have a chance getting hired unless I was well-rounded and could do a fully rendered piece, but this kinda gave me a big boost. Thanks!
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you so much!
Loved your video!! I am a always inspired by you😁, thanks for inspiring me and many other upcoming artists!😊
Really helpful stuff! Gives me a couple ideas for my own portfolio
👏🏻 Thank u very very much! This is so helpful!🤩 You’re awesome!
I don't know how your channel made its way into my recommended because I typically watch, golf videos, and hockey highlights... but I'm really glad it did. Your videos are awesome, and thank you for making them!
We recently turned my live action TV show into an animated version of that same show, and the coolest part was watching the character designer create animated characters that (a) look like the actual real life actors, and (b) feel like they belong in our new animated world. I'm fascinated how character designers can adapt their personal style to fit the style of the project. Amazing talent.
Thank u for making this! I needed it! I also realize how much I have to learn!😱😱😱😱
This is great! So easy to understand 😍😍
Story is my favorite part of character design lol
Thank you so much for your advices! I love your videos ❤️

It was Abu. He patched Aladdin's pants. I saw it on the internet somewhere, I swear.
This video was amazingly helpful!! Thank you!!!🙌🏽💯
I really love these videos
They are so so helpful to us little people considering going into the field when we are older. Honestly the professional inner workings of the industry is so shrouded in mystery to me.
Do you think you could do more like this? Like do an animation or storyboarding one? I know it’s not what you specialize in so maybe you could do a colab with some Industry friends to see what their takes are?
Absolutely! everything is so helpful for me.
Actually, I already have a lot of portfolios. but I know I have to make more other works to match with the animation studio.
I'll do my best to meet with you in the studio after a few years. keep it up!
This could not have come at a better time! I only just found out that Graphic Design (which I study) is not what I want to pursue. I also just realized that what I constantly do in my spare time (for as long as I can remember) is a serious option for the future! I have researched character design, but I am Dutch and had never heard of it before here. I could not find (large) animation studios in the Netherlands and I am not sure what to do next. Your video is packed with incredibly useful tips that give me hope! Thank you so so much!! Any tips on how to proceed now are welcome! ;)
Thanks! That was awesome
wow thankssss Laura, didnt know rendered version of character is not needed for a character design portfolio!!
love this help and the dog
Thank you share this wonderful informations to us. I try to arrange my internships' portfolio in next year. This info are a lot of meaning for me.
This was sooooooo helpful! ❤❤❤
These are seriously so helpful! Would you be able to do a tutorial or be able to give some advice on how to draw glasses? I always find when I try to on my characters that it always looks flat. Any suggestion is welcome!
I want to apply to an animation institution and this is extremely helpful! Thank you! It's actually nerve wrecking because I'm finally going after something I want to do. But I gotta nail this portfolio so yeah, gotta get over the nerves.
Hello Laura! Do you think you could ever do a video where you critique some subscribers art? Thank you so much for making these super helpful videos and have a nice day! :^)

Could you do some videos about drawing basics for people if you have time? I am just getting back into drawing people and would love to see how you go about designing a character and drawing people because I really enjoy your style. I was looking on your channel and didn’t see any. Thanks.
Thank thank you !!! It was helpful !!
Future merch: "Who patched Aladdins pants?"

I’ve redesign the same character 8 times, I’m valid, oof turn arounds ahhhhhhhhhhhh‼️ I’m a causal but making a portfolio would be a huge accomplishment. I understood everything surprisingly, your a great specialist in many areas

Thank you for this Video Laura! I was really needing this kind of advise right now....! (BUT now I can't sleep thinking who patched Alladin's pants)
Invaluable advice c':
thank you for the video :)
I always thought I had to be very good at painting, now I'm reliefs, cuz I'm not good at painting but love creating characters
I suddenly feel overwhelmed because of all the things i need to work on involving my art and ability to tell a story XD but this video was a great help thanks sm :3
Thanks for doing this, you mentioned story been king, do you mean the characters themselves showing story (like alladins pants patch!?)
Visual examples would be nice :)
What tips do you have for a digital portfolio format?
I love youuuu 😍😍😍
Thanks Laura...
Do you have any advice on the types of Sketches & WIP images to include in a portfolio application? I know what to include for my finished pieces & anatomy studies, but I'm not sure what type of sketches studios are generally looking for.
Hi Lulu! Thank you so much for creating another informative portfolio video. I have a question. Since you said that a character design portfolio should be made as its own seperate thing, does creature design also fall under character design? What if...as one of personal projects within my portfolio, I had an idea for like an RPG type of story which featured monster designs in addition to the characters and I wanted to feature designs for the monsters or creatures. Is that also part of character design or is creature design part of vis dev or its own seperate portfolio?
I need to be sleeping but I can’t miss a iconic Laura Price video
Something I struggle with is trying to figure out if I should have one Character Design portfolio showing that I can design both TV and Feature style characters or should I have two different portfolios? I always ever think it.
Hey Laura!
I have a silly question, what if the characters you created are based on your real life friends? I sort of made a little world based on them and their little rivalry on video games. Like kingdoms battling each other for the glory of the crown. How would you present that to a recruiter?
Thank You.
My favorite advice is always tell a story
When making a portfolio, can I put both my digital and paper sketches into it?
Super but I request you to make video tutorial about how to use your brush and digital painting enviroment
hi! check out my digital painting tutorial and background painting tutorial!
Story is King? But I thought that Weasley was our King!
Couldn’t resist :)
Is it ok to use expression reference when preparing a character expression sheet for your portfolio or should you draw your characters expressions from memory. Thank you
Laura you look like a Disney's Princess
Hey Laura, great tips. I was wondering, how many pages should be reserved per character? I was thinking two, one page for showing the design proces and one page for the acting and maybe also including a turnaround. Is that a good way to go? That way you can show a lot without overcrowding the pages, but it also doesn't take up too much space in your portfolio? Or do you suggest a different approach in presenting one's designs?
First I’d like to thank you for creating these videos that answer so many questions we all have. I have a new question for you that I don’t think you’ve covered, what must an animators appearance be. At a studio like Disney, can animators have piercings and tattoos? Do they have to be covered up?
